Ordered a patty melt which I've had there several times in the past. Delicious. I have avoided them for dietary reasons. So ordered one recently and got a small burger on a bun w cheese no fried onions. Server had no idea why it was not the usually patty melt. She was not ... seemingly interested in checking. I ate it. It is my fault for not carefully reading the new menu. Why change a basic and commonly known item like a patty melt into a bland burger? BTW there are similar ones on the new menu -- "crispy onion burger, and big paddy melt", latter with an odd description, neither of which is a patty melt of yore. Food ok. read more

We haven't been to the location for a couple of years but I always remember it being better, foodwise. The location is great and the place has that homey supper club feel that everyone enjoys. I was really eager to come back. I came with the wife and 7 year old boy/girl twins. The little guy wasn't very hungry but loves his French fries. It's sad to say but the fries came and looked perfect. Then, after sampling one, it was hard like a rock and hard to chew. The little guy ate a few and said they were too hard to chew . The little girl got the Leprechaun cheeseburger and she liked it. It was just the right size. My wife got the Little Paddy Melt and I got the regular size one. She seemed to like the melt but said it was "too greasy." I liked mine but agreed that it was good but felt really greasy afterwards. Another thing that was nothing like I remember was the onion loaf. This one was overcooked and didn't have much taste. We had to put extra salt on it to make it passable. (Didn't this used to have a dipping sauce similar to a salad dressing or something? We weren't sure.) Anyway, we were hoping the experience would be better. The little guys did like the old arcade room. Too bad the coin slot didn't work for Donkey Kong. $128 post tax pre tip, ouch! Wasn't expecting that bill to come in so high. The burgers are mediocre; nothing to write home about. Fries are bottomless, but also pretty plain. We did enjoy the appetizers we tried on that St. Patty's evening of baked potato skins and cheese curds. Salty (but not overly so), cheesy, and comforting. Kids' meal is very mini. Both my 8 yo and 6 yo commented how small the sliders were and inhaled it very quickly. The side of applesauce comes in one of those 1-sip taster cups, and the ice cream dessert comes in a little 2oz portion cup. A bit skimpy all around, esp for older kids. I will say the Moscow mule was very tasty and was reasonable priced at $12, if I recall correctly. Happy hour specials are available, but only if dining at the bar. Been coming to Hackney's for St. Patrick's Day for years, but this year the food felt noticeably skimpier. The fish and chips portion was smaller than usual, and the Reuben had a comically small amount of meat--though there were plenty of fries. The steamed broccoli had freezer burn and beyond being microwaved failed to have any flavor or treatment. Even the plastic containers of slaw disappointed....the Bloody Mary was watery. I've reviewed them before as they have really good burgers and the onion loaf is like nothing else anywhere. However, they have changed their menu, and they no longer offer the turkey burger. My wife wanted to go to Hackney's on Lake tonight as she doesn't eat enough protein and wanted their turkey burger. Even those many places offer turkey burgers, more often than not, they're not very good. Hackneys had a good one. And now they stopped offering it. My wife was then left with fish and chips or the grilled cheese. She got the grilled cheese. It's pretty good, but not what she wanted. The other thing is if you like your fries well done, they don't know how to do that, so be aware. And apparently the burgers don't come with pickle spears anymore. Our party of four celebrated St Patrick's Day tonight ahead of the masses at Hackney's on Lake. As usual we started with a large order of French fried onions, and three indulged in their Hackney burger and one had Fish & chips. All were highly satisfied. Food was top-notch & love all their cozy small rooms. Our server Shanon R. was the BEST, so pleasant and attentive, convincing that she truly enjoyed her job. We truly enjoyed our 3 1/2 hour dinner. Given the unruly competition amongst burger-centric places, the eponymous Hackneyburger no longer tops our list. Instead, we build our meals around the incomparable (although caloric) brick-on-a-plate by supplementing it with healthier options from the expansive menu. On this visit, I ordered half a crab salad (imitation crab, natch) sandwich on their famous dark rye bread with a cup of chicken noodle soup. My Missus ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with a side of boiled potatoes. We couldn't have been happier with our choices. We took half of the brick home to resurrect later in the air fryer. Menu prices remain surprisingly fair, and we always enjoy the friendly service. We prefer the timeworn ambience of this sprawling multi-room Glenview classic to the even more timeworn original on Harms Road. read more

We stopped in this long time local favorite for dinner during North Shore Restaurant Month. The offer was buy a sandwich and receive a free quarter loaf of fried onion rings. It had been a long time since I last ate at Hackney's on Lake and I left a bit disappointed. Nothing in Hackney's has changed over the years except the food and the family Thanksgiving pictures on the wall. It was a busy night so that might have impacted our experience. The onion loaf was greasy and kind of bland which is not what I recall from other times ordering it. I ordered a burger on dark rye. The burger was good but the bread fell apart as I was eating the burger making it messy to eat which I also don't recall. Next time I'll get a bun instead of the rye. My husband ordered a burger that seems to be their version of a Juicy Lucy burger. He said it was good but the cheese and bacon filling seemed to be replaced with cheese and bacon on top. The apple pie we had for dessert was good. If you are looking for a decent meal in the Glenview area give Hackney's a try. They haven't been around for decades for nothing. read more

My boyfriend's family makes an annual pilgrimage to this place in honor of their parents who loved going here when they were young. I can't believe I haven't written a review about Hackneys before. I've been coming here since I was a teenager. Most recently, I was here with a large group, having a dinner after a holiday performance in their downstairs private dining space. I've been there many times, both in the main restaurant and downstairs, and one thing I love about Hackneys is its absolute consistency - their onion loaf, Reuben sandwich, and Hackney Burger, the things that made them an institution in the first place, have not changed since the 1970s. Typically when we dine downstairs with a group, we are offered a limited menu. The options have shrunk some since pre-pandemic, but they still offer the burger, the Reuben, a chicken sandwich, and a chicken salad. I usually opt for either the burger or the Reuben, and this time I chose the Reuben. It was, as always, served on their delicious homemade rye bread, and with a very ample portion of tender corned beef. I'm not a big fan of their fries, because I prefer thinner, crispier fries, so I opted for all coleslaw (which equates to two little plastic tubs, instead of one). But my husband and other friends who like their fries loved that they served a big community plate of fries at each end of our long table. A couple of the guys sitting with us had never been there before, and wondered what those shoebox-shaped items were that were being delivered to a couple of the other tables. I explained about the onion loaf, and ordered a 1/4 loaf for us to enjoy. It was a late order, that I gave to our server as he was delivering our other food, but we had the loaf within about five minutes. Outstanding! And everybody thoroughly enjoyed it. My Manhattan, as always, was made perfectly. As with their food consistency, they also are consistent with their classic cocktails, and I appreciate that! After the rest of our group left, four of us sat downstairs and talked for probably another hour, and no one seemed to be bothered by this. We really appreciated that they let us hang out there while we solved all the problems of the world. When we came back upstairs, we noticed that the main bar was still open, so we decided to sit there and have one more drink, and continue our discussion. I don't think I've ever just sat at the bar at that Hackneys before, and it was a delight to meet and chat with their long-time bartender, Rich. As we were leaving, I hadn't noticed a staff member standing to one side until I was near the door and I heard him tell Rich that I was a regular customer, and to be sure to treat me well. That was when I looked and realized it was Hector, who has bartended for a few of our other events at the downstairs bar. I hadn't seen him since before the pandemic, and was really touched that he remembered me. That again reminded me what a welcoming place this is, with wonderful staff. Thanks, Hackneys, for always being a place where I am welcomed and valued, and also for your unwavering consistency. I grew up on the North Shore. I love going to Hackneys on Harmes to sit outside, have a nice burger. But that's great only at certain times of year. Last night we went to the lake street location, it was not good. Sorry. I know what to order, and this wasn't good. The onion block was good. Yum. The burgers were bad. Made me sad. I always get the special dark rye bread. It was dry, and broken up into pieces. Fell apart..from dryness! Bad. My daughters burger was similarly bad. I ordered my burger rare, like I always do...and it arrived with a cold center. Again, not good. I honestly have not had this problem at the other location. I think management really needs to look at the kitchen at this Lake Street location. Other reviewers seen to have similar issues. Love you Hackneys- do better! Go nearby to Harmes Woods. Came here for the legendary Onion loaf. OMG it did not disappoint. The full is a huge loaf almost the size of a loaf of bread. I don't know how they got the inside as crisp as the outside, but it was a wonderful side. It could be the entree. It served five of us with some to bring home. I also had the inside out hackney with bacon and cheese. But it wasn't inside out. The cheese and bacon are on top. The burger is a 1/2 pound Huge. It comes with fries and slaw. The slaw is amazing. The fires were crisp but after the onion loaf who needs more fried food. Service was attentive and always there for drink refills. I walked passed the bar which was a great setting. Terrible experience today! I've been going to Hackney's for over 40 years. We started with onion rings which were just left sitting at the bar. I believe it was the owner who finally brought them over. We ordered our burgers medium rare. They came out well done. There was no one to tell! Our server, Tara, never came back to check on us. Not once were we asked how our food was. At the end, we had to beg for the check. During the ordering process, Tara required us to shout at her while she entered our order at the cash register. Another server gave us our check. She said she'd let the manager know about our poor experience so he or she could talk to us but no manager ever came over. Goodbye, Hackney's! read more

Hackney's is a Glenview staple. Hackey's on Lake opened in 1955 and my family has been going since it's inception. This location is huge with tons of space for dining, a full bar and plenty of room for groups, as well. Most recently we hosted a lunch there of about 30 people and everything went incredibly. Our server was gem! Somehow he remembered every drink each person wanted, was on top of refills, stayed happy, positive and accommodating all while helping our group out. Now there are three classics you must get when you go to Hackney's. *French Fried Onions - This is shocking to first timers. It's a huge 'brick' of fried onions. I hate onions but something about the special way they do them, I absolutely love them. Not healthy in the slightest but they are the best! *The Hackneyburger - Served on dark rye, this is a unique classic patty burger. *The Reuben - again served on their special rye bread made in house, topped with corned beef, swiss, thousand island sauce and sauerkraut. Hackney's has never disappointed me so no doubt I'll be back since this is the place to go in Glenview. read more

I really love Hackney's on Lake! I've been eating here for decades and their food is always great! I mostly go with the Hackney Burger and they always serve it exactly as I order it. The fries are never limp or greasy, but hot and crisp. I wish I could buy a quart of their cole slaw to take home. Amazing stuff. The interior is well worn and I mean that in the best possible way!! Think very cozy. Lots of wood tones and the bar makes you think you are in the North Woods of Wisconsin. There no bright glaring overhead lights here but very tasteful sconces and lamps that create a warm glow. And the great German beers on tap also help add to that warm glow!! The place has been there forever. Time to hang it up. You walk in at 3:00 on a Sunday afternoon and the place is dark. No one to greet you at the door, just a hard to read sign at knee level directing to walk down the dark hallway and seat yourself in the room on the right. Throughout the meal the lights kept flickering and we were waiting for a power failure. It was quiet and it wasn't freezing cold, but the food was terrible. The signature onion loaf was overcooked, and required the Ginsu knife to cut. The 8 ounce signature burger, which we ordered MEDIUM WELL was red on the inside. The 4 ounce burger was slightly bigger than a slider, and noticeably smaller than the bun. The fries were also overcooked. As if this trifecta wasn't enough our server announced at 4:00 that her shift was over and she was leaving immediately and that some player to be named later would take over. After waiting patiently we literally had to flag someone down by waving our arms and begging her to bring the check and put us out of our misery. Also, instead of putting fries on my and my friends plates, the gave us a plate of "fries for the table", which was sort of annoying because then we both worried that we were eating more than our fair share. Think again before you book a group dinner. It was awful at an event recently. Although the servers were wonderful, the food and presention was terrible. First course was iceberg lettuce salad. Next, a block of onion rings. About 20 minutes later, some boneless, pale chicken floating in lemon juice. Very few people tasted it. About 20 min. later, some broccoli and noodles. Again, few takers. Next, a BIG bowl of more broccoli. By this time, the smell of it was quite unpleasant. All anyone wanted was a burger. We begged, we pleaded but no burgers. If you have never been here and you wish to set your expectation beforehand, I would suggest viewing it as an event space that offers food options and has a bar. Or put another way, view it as Chuck E. Cheese minus the fun. I have been here for all the above. As an event space, it is familiar to locals, conveniently close to home and gets the job done acceptably. As a bar, it always has people in it and is always challenging to order a beverage, not sure why that is. As a restaurant to eat, hot mess. I never come to Hackneys to eat. Every time I give it the benefit of the doubt for whatever reason (usually because of someone else) I am reminded yet again why I do not come here to dine. Packed into a small overcrowded dining space, small children crawling around the tables on the floor, other children bouncing up and down in their chairs, the parents of these same children seemingly unphased and showing no signs of leaving anytime soon. As for the food, I would honestly say that nothing on the menu here is beyond mediocre with one bizarre exception, the cheese curds. I do not care for cheese curds, but having tried Hackney's, I think they are better than most I have tried, which is not many. Everything else...honestly, you are going to pay north shore prices anyway, so why not eat some good food for the money. There is nothing worse than dropping a chunk of change on sad food. Your salad will be iceberg, your sautéed spinach will be a pathetic show of having been in the pan just long enough to get wrinkled from the heat, your chicken breast will be tiny, your avocado barely discernible, your medium rare burger medium, etc etc etc. What else is irksome about this location? The fact that they turned their old laundromat into a brewery, yet offer none of the beers from that brewery in the main restaurant. I'm sure there is a reason that I am unaware of, but honestly, I don't care, it seems like a no brainer.
