Located in the heart of international district, this is one of my fav spots for malatong! It's a pay by the weight, which is nice for days when I'm too full for an AYCE hot pot. Absolutely unacceptable experience. I placed my order at 12:19 PM and didn't receive my food until over an hour later. This is a build your own takeout malatang restaurant, so I expected a reasonable wait--but not one that took up my entire hour lunch break and then some. What made the experience even more frustrating was the complete lack of communication. The cashier never apologized, never warned anyone that the kitchen was running behind, and never offered a single update. About 40 minutes in, I finally asked for a status update and was simply told, "Almost." That was it. After my coworker received her order, the cashier looked at my other coworker and I and said our food was ready, but there was "no one in the back to pack it." We then had to sit there for another 10 minutes waiting for someone to put it in a bag. Meanwhile, we watched multiple customers who ordered after us receive their food before we did. After wasting over an hour of our lunch break, the food itself was incredibly disappointing. The ingredients were overcooked, the broth was bland, and it absolutely was not worth the wait. The service was disorganized, the communication was nonexistent, and the food didn't make up for any of it. I had high hopes for this place since it's one of the few to-go malatang spots nearby, but my experience was extremely disappointing. I came in during my lunch break, and there weren't many people ahead of me. Despite that, my order took over an hour to be ready. Even more frustrating, I watched multiple customers who arrived after us receive their food first. There didn't seem to be any organization or consistency in how orders were being prepared. For a business that's takeout only, order management should be one of the biggest priorities. They really need a better system for tracking and prioritizing in-store pickup orders versus online orders. Waiting over an hour for a simple takeout order during lunch is unacceptable, especially when others who came later are served first. Unless the ordering process improves, I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're on any kind of schedule. read more

Came in for a pickup order one day off Chowbus. Normally these apps give a lot of leeway but despite an 11:40 pickup they hadn't even started by the time I got there. On top of that, the person they were trying to help had been waiting for 10 minutes because they had some issue with their payment system and ultimately had to cancel their order. We finally received our order at 12:05, so 25 minutes after the expected time. I'm not sure how recently they opened if these are new restaurant opening pains or what, but it was surprisingly difficult to get food in a timely manner for what is presented as a quick option Food was fine, 3.5/5, pretty standard. Terrible service. Came for lunch with coworkers. Spent our whole lunch just waiting for the food. My order was submitted at 12:18pm and I didn't get it until 1:18pm. It wasn't even hot and we spent our whole lunch waiting for food. We never got an update while waiting. When we asked how much longer the response was I don't know. There were 6 people that came in after us that all got their food well before we did. No apologies for the long wait no nothing. Food was over cooked, I'm assuming because it just sat for so long. Yum!! Came on a Friday evening and there was no wait. The selection is pretty decent. Cleanliness was a little questionable but seems to have changed since I went. The broth here was super super tasty!! Perfect amount of mala, spices, and meaty flavors. I like how they give you a side of rice and the sweet bean dessert. Price is also reasonable. I have yet to try their sister restaurant next door. Pretty reasonable price for malatang in ID. The only con here is it is takeout only which may be inconvenient if you live farther away. This place was empty when I arrived, shortly after noon, BUT it was the Monday after Superbowl. It is a take-out only spot with a 1 lb. minimum. There were lots of fresh ingredients to choose from, and the cashier was kind enough to let me know I could top off my bowl that was shy 1 lb. I ordered #2 extra mild spicy broth and found it quite spicy (equiv. to 3 stars at a Thai restaurant). Overall, the flavor was good, but on the oily side. I like that they cut the napa leaf when they took it in the back to cook. Everything was packed nicely and the soup lid was sealed shut to prevent any risk of leaking. Bonus was that rice, dessert, utensils, and a fancy takeout bag were included. The bag made it easy for me to carry the 6 blocks back to the office and kept everything piping hot. Note that the utensil pack contained the teeniest of napkins. Since the soup was on the greasy side, you will need at least a couple of full-sized napkins as you will be continuously wiping splatter from your face, and the surrounding area while you eat. Small price to pay for a delicious lunch. read more
