I love the original Chengdu Gormet near Squirrel hill and have been a few times, I decided to try this location recently and it was just as good. While I felt like the original location was slightly better with the overall flavors, this place was pretty darn good. Service was friendly and decent too. The menu is PACKED with many authentic items, so much to choose from, but be sure to use the Chinese menu, not the American menu. The meats in our food choices were tender and fresh... same with the veggies. The flavors were very nice and spice level was low when I asked for "regular" level of spicy, so if I came back, I'd ask for a little more heat. We enjoyed most everything was got - The Dan Dan Noodles were basic, tho flavored nicely, they were like an "Asian spaghetti" so they weren't as good as they should have been. The cucumbers were boring, they definitely needed to have smashed garlic sauce and hot peppers added to the flavor from the kitchen, not just me adding heat at the table. The cumin beef was so tender and tasty! But needed more spice. The scallion pancakes were the best I've had yet! Their garlic sauce that came with the scallion pancakes was so incredibly tasty and those pancakes were flakey and done so nicely! For wok'd greenbeans, the only option was to get their stringbeans and pork and ask for no meat, but add spice - this worked PERFECTLY and they wok'd them right! Overall, it was a very nice visit and despite my opinion on the lack of depth of flavor and heat, this place would definitely satisfy most - So Go, give them a try!! read more

The restaurant is very big and has a lot of seating, so there is always room for you to dine and not really have a wait. It's also very well lit. The menu is very extensive and has both American and authentic Chinese food. The portions are very large and you get a lot of food for the price you way. The price is also very reasonable. The food also comes out very quickly. The food was very good and very fresh. Just be warned that their cucumber salad is just cucumbers (there's no rice vinegar, sesame oil, or soy sauce), this was a let down. But the scallion pancakes and string beans were very good. The service though was a little frustrating. It took a while for a waiter to come to our table. We also had a couple of different waiters because we weren't understood and had to do a lot of pointing at the menu. Aside from that, I'm really happy that this restaurant is on McKnight! read more

Good overall experience. This is the North Hills location associated with the original restaurant in Squirrel Hill. The food is generally good, but they tend to overreach on menu breadth in an effort to appeal to a North Hills audience. The menu includes sushi and dim sum, but the restaurant really isn't optimized for filling those niches. They are really just checkboxes that seem to be demanded by the area. In terms of my overall dine-in experience, it seems that there are two different menus available. There is a traditional Chinese menu and more of an Americanized menu. The distinction between the two isn't made particularly clear in the menus themselves. You just need to know that it's important to understand which menu you're looking at. Having ordered from the traditional Chinese menu, the food was generally good. The service was friendly and helpful. The space was extensive, with plenty of room between tables. The beer options were somewhat underwhelming, but that's also not the restaurant's specialty. I will say that the Sam Adams bottle was on the verge of expiration, and the beer was somewhat oxidized, but I'm also sensitive to that particular flaw. The Yuengling was much more fresh, but it was still a Yuengling. All told, this was a good experience, but that experience depends on knowing which menu to order from and which beer is likely to be more fresh. It's James Beard nominated chef Wei Zhu's second location in the North Hills with both traditional Chinese and American style Chinese menus - we went with dishes from the traditional menu. We ordered a variety of items to share family style and wow, what a top tier dinner! My personal favorites were the tender braised pork belly, the crispy and spicy chongqing chicken, and the green peppercorn whole fish filet that had a wonderful kick to it and adorable presentation. The inside is spacious with big tables with lazy Susan's that's perfect for groups. They have a couple of smaller private rooms. The service was so fast and they gave great recommendations! We usually only ever get take out nowadays, but I was so surprised at how large the inside was! Definitely a great place to bring a lot of family/kids. This location is as good as the original location in squirrel hill. I've only ever ordered off of the traditional Chinese menu and my go-to will always be the sichuan chili oil dumplings!! I stopped by here this past Friday night with my wife. This was about my 20th or so visit to Chengdu Gourmet 2 and I'm honestly surprised that I haven't reviewed it before now. The reason we come here so often is that I find it to be the most authentic Chinese restaurant I've come across in Pittsburgh. Each visit has been takeout and it's almost always on a Friday night. This location is on McKnight Road in the former Oriental Market building. There's a large bar area when you walk in, which is where I always pick up our order, and beyond that is a spacious dining area. We always place our orders online through their website, which redirects to ChowNow. The pickup timing has always been accurate and our food is ready and waiting when we arrive. On this particular visit I went with the beef and small peppers while my wife ordered the honey walnut chicken to share with our kids. We also got shrimp spring rolls and the corn and egg drop soup. This was actually my first time trying the beef and small peppers as my usual go-to is the three pepper chicken. I've also had the diced chicken in Chongqing style, eggplant and chicken, Mapo tofu, Dan Dan noodles, and a few others over the years. The beef dish was excellent. The meat had a nice coating and was very tender, and the peppers delivered a solid kick. It was spicy enough to grab my attention without being overwhelming or making me immediately reach for a drink. It might even rival the three pepper chicken as my regular order going forward. The honey walnut chicken was a hit with the kids and is something they specifically ask for sometimes. My daughter inhaled the egg drop soup, and my wife enjoyed the shrimp spring rolls. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. As a matter of fact, we already have many times over. Disappointing, boring, bland This review is for a takeout order from Chengdu Gourmet 2. Online ordering process is fine. Order was filled promptly. We had one order of Chicken and Broccoli from the American Style Chinese Menu and one order of Three Pepper Diced Chicken from the Traditional Chinese Menu. Somehow these two dishes were the exact same chicken and brown sauce, with the only difference being in the type of vegetable. Both dishes were practically flavorless, with no spice or heat to speak of. We've enjoyed their food in the past but very disappointed this time. Chengdu 2 is just so good. I've visited this location three times and all of my visits have been wonderful and so tasty! You can be as adventurous or as reserved as you'd like when it comes to ordering, as they offer both a more American-style Chinese menu and a true Sichuan Chinese menu. I like a mix of both for my meal experiences! The service is quick and friendly, and their servers always provide suggestions and thoughts about spice level, what pairs well together, suggestions for any additional dishes, etc., which I always appreciate. The space is open and bright, perhaps not glamorous or super modern, but still very comfortable. Very accommodating to large parties with their lazy Susan tables! There is a sushi bar but we've yet to try sushi while at Chengdu - too many other options to try first! My husband has recently deemed this our "go-to Chinese spot" going forward, and I feel very lucky that we live so close to this Pittsburgh gem. After being told that Chengdu Gormet 2 (specifically 2 on McKnight) was some of the best Chinese food in the city, we absolutely had to try it. We went on a Monday around noon for lunch. The restaurant is spacious inside and it wasn't too busy. Its a comfortable space with comfortable seating. The lunch special prices were insane....ly good! I the orange chicken special for $10.95. The food came within 5 minutes of ordering. I was happily full after my meal! One of the best things about the orange chicken here (my favorite dish in general) was that the chicken was very juicy but wasn't oily! The sauce had a great consistency as well. Sometimes only Chengdu will scratch that Chinese food itch. Place was packed on a Saturday night and we were happy to see them doing so well. Our waiter was such a delight. The Happy Family was off the charts good as was the Amazing Green Beans and Eggplant. The Garlic chicken leaned toward the sweet side with a subtle rooster chili undertone. Tried out the Szechuan menu for the first time and it was sooo good!! The eggplant in garlic sauce might have looked as you would expect, but it tasted amazing and was super filling. Eggplant can really be hit or miss for me, and this was a hit that lasted me two full meals as well. I was also excited to try the cheese rangoons which were super crispy and satisfying. This Chinese restaurant has HUGE menus, and it appears (I am not Chinese) to serve many authentic foods. On a Saturday afternoon, my husband and I ate lunch at this restaurant. Right after we walked through the entrance, an employee smiled and said hello. Another employee immediately asked us if we wanted a table or booth. We chose a table, which was clean and comfortable but for some reason showed text and images about London and the Eiffel Tower. Our servers were very friendly and timely. My husband and I took several minutes to look through the many pages of the menus. We saw foods such as frog and pork intestine but also many other foods that appeal more to American tastebuds. Here are our reviews for our foods and beverage: Cheese rangoon - 5 stars - Several rangoons had a crispy exterior and a flavorful cheesy filling. Salmon avocado sushi roll - 4.5 stars - This sushi was fresh and tasted good. When Chengdu 2 first opened, my experience was not all that great. Food portions were small, service was awful, and several dishes were overcooked. Walked out quite disappointed and crossed them off my list. Fast forward to a few months later to today, I decided that maybe I should give them another try, hoping that all the initial knicks were worked out. Word has it, there was a change in the staffing that included the cooks. Wow, a complete surprise! We ordered the pork belly appetizer, spicy glass noodles, salt n pepper crabs, spicy beef tendons, flaming pans of frog legs and also lamb. Every single dish was on point and full of taste and just the right amount of spice. Portions were also sized appropriately as well. Guess what? The food was awful--seafood tasted old, dishes we ordered were replaced without telling us, and they even served part of the meal on foam plates. It felt cheap and careless despite how much was paid. The owner was the worst part. Sweet and agreeable before the deposit, then rude and dismissive after. She denied simple requests we'd clearly discussed--like table placement and starting karaoke early--even though the restaurant was nearly empty. She even took photos of our decorations for her own promo while treating us terribly. The whole experience was frustrating and disrespectful. The bride was heartbroken. Save yourself the regret. We had been watching the space and were hoping it would open and it finally did. I was so happy when I drove by and saw the lights on and tables. We knew we had to go immediately to check it out. They did a great job renovating the old Oriental Market Space. You would never know it was previously a market and not a restaurant. It's a nice big open space with beautiful decor. It's bright and clean. Love the lanterns! The staff was really friendly and really tried to make you feel welcome, which was very nice. They brought you the giant menus and water. The menus were a bit confusing because there were multiple and they had so much in them. We struggled on what to order. We decided to go with things that we knew which were good and also tried some new things that looked interesting. I love pineapple fried rice so I decided to try theirs. I liked mine with chicken. My mom liked the shrimp and scallops in hers but not the calamari. My husband liked his spicy chicken because as he and my godson described it as a slow burn. Haha My godson liked his general Tso chicken. We all really liked the xiao bao or soup dumplings. They were really good apart from sticking to the paper which lost some of the soup. If you are not interested in spicy, go somewhere else, but I will tell you that this is the food I am craving. The food has lots of bold flavor, but never overwhelmingly spicy. There are 2 menus. I recommend you choose the Chinese menu. It's also in English, but it's going to have the best dishes that they offer. I also recommend that you go with a group. The portions are all large, but that's because you are meant to order for the whole table. The dining room is more spacious, and they have lots of tables with the lazy susan in the middle, so you can more easily share the dishes. Tables are well spaced. There were some items on the menu, for example Bubble Tea, which are not available, but hang on, they will be here soon. On our most recent visit, my niece wanted Orange and Sesame Chicken, the kitchen did an excellent job adding some sesame seeds to the orange chicken dish to accommodate her request. I still don't get the negative reviews. Let me break it down for folks. Yes, there are a three menus. And so yes it might appear overwhelming. But put simply one is basically for sushi. One is more American style Chinese (you know, the boring Americanized ones found at any run of the mill Chinese eatery). And one is the authentic Szechuan province style fare. The third menu is the one you want to order off of if you're looking for something authentic and delicious. This has become our mainstay for Chinese. I've taken many friends here, including out of town friends who, like me, grew up in east Asia. And it has NEVER disappointed. We are treated like family (though dining here regularly, admittedly, contributes to that). The new additions of fresh catch selections (and I mean fresh as in alive in the tanks) is amazing. See fresh pic in this review. Today's steamed catch was amazing. So now you know what to do. Yes the language barrier might be tough, but there's pictures for crying out loud. A kindergartener could order for you. And yes it's more expensive than run of the mill takeout. But you are getting something so much more. We ordered takeout noodle dishes...lo mein and ho fun wild noodles both with beef. These are normally a mj axing but this time we ordered through Grubhub....mistake. We've had bad Grubhub experiences prior but thought Asian was safe. Nope! All of our poor experiences are with a driver named Mohammad. I would suggest if you order and get him as delivery person to cancel. Our order this time was delivered 50 minutes past delivery time, which meant our food had probably been sitting for at least 30 minutes before our delivery time. The beef was tough and chewy and ho fun noodles were mushy. The lo mein noodles were oily like a reheat the next day. I believe it just sat too long. We were quite disappointed to spend $ 42 for the food which we ate little of and tossed in trash. Learned a tough lesson to not use Grubhub anymore and definitely recommend not tipping ($11) in advance which I do because we've been told by drivers they pick those orders first to guarantee getting a tip. Grubhub's response to this was to give me a $10 credit which I told them I would never use. The 3 star rating is to inform customers that Grubhub might ruin their meal and maybe let restaurant know what is happening. read more

Can the sequel be better than the original? Well if you are Chengdu Gourmet 2 then the answer is yes. I have been to the first Chengdu Gourmet in the Squirrel Hill area and this newer location is by all means better. For starters parking is easy and abundant. The restaurant is much larger, brighter and the air conditioner works amazingly. I want to say the menu seems larger (I could be wrong) but the choices just seem brighter. I love all their noodle dishes and their fried rice. I always get something spicy and a vegetable dish and have always been pleased.
