We were visiting from out of town because my wife grew up just outside of Pittsburgh. We hail from Los Angeles where there is a lot of really terrific Chinese food. To be candid I considered just leaving and not placing an order. However I lingered because I knew she was not going to be cooking our food... And more so I could see there was a good variety of bagged up orders waiting for pickup. I like a place that's busy. So my wife and daughters came in and selected a variety of dishes totaling some 70 some odd dollars. I'll say right now that we gave a decent tip which in the end drew a little bit of a very brief smile from the sour young lady. I don't know if I have pictures of everything but the three stars begrudgingly given are obviously purely granted for food quantity and taste alone. Zero Stars penalize the overall score for zero quality of service. I'm writing this review a couple weeks after our visit. Dismissively I wasn't going to leave this review at all since it's less than complimentary and I'm just not spiteful in nature. So in vague recollection I know we had a chicken curry... As a recent Pitt graduate, this restaurant is a staple to the community it serves. Don't expect anything too fancy from here. It's not the most attractive food like no one's flexing it on their Instagram. It's an American Chinese takeout restaurant that fills you up cheaply, quickly, and deliciously. For $7-$10, you get an entree that usually comes out in 5 minutes after you order. A lot of people I know and myself don't finish that food in one sitting, so that's a snack for later! My personal favorites are the Chicken Fried Rice, Beef Chow Fun, Chicken with Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, Hot Spicy Peppered Chicken, and the Sesame Chicken. For a snack, I like to get the fried dumplings. During my time at the University of Pittsburgh, I could always rely on this place for a comforting meal after a long day or a grueling exam. I ordered chicken and broccoli and asked for strings beans to be added in as well. The food literally came out PIPING hot in 2 minutes. The green beans/broccoli were fresh and still had a crunch while still being flavorful. The chicken was good. Not anemic like some other places I've been and had a good flavor and texture. The rice was also very good - slightly sticky and the perfect base for the chicken/veg/brown sauce. Atmosphere - 2 stars. I stopped during a busy lunch service where orders were flying out left and right every 2 minutes. The cashier was friendly enough and aced my order. The water/plastic utensils/napkins/etc are out for you to grab as you need. Let's face it - it's not a place to hang. There are pictures of the food and menu on the walls and I didn't get a particularly clean vibe. If I were able to give the rating with the caveat that I recommend ordering to go and you're not getting anything fancy, I'd give it 5 stars. I'm torn! It's made very fast, and most food is under $8, but if you go here for lunch (don't) there's several other places with the same pricing down Atwood St. which are just so much better quality, and so much more authentic. Our favorites are the general tso's, breaded boneless chicken cutlet with black bean sauce, and hot spicy pepper chicken. Both have a great portion of meat with flavorful sauces and tender meat. Most of their meat dishes are great. Their chow fun and their lo mein are average, and need a little bit of salt oomph from additional soy sauce. Avoid the fried rice - it isn't very good. Their portions are ginormous and they have great prices (between $6-9). One dish can easily be two meals for me. Service is always super quick and food is always hot and fresh. Based on the exterior of the building, you should not have super high expectations. A more "dive" style restaurant, this place is great for cheap Chinese food, conveniently located in a college environment. More authentic than other places, you can't beat the prices that range from $5 and up. They also offer more than 150 menu options. While they offer General Tso's chicken, egg rolls, and other Americanized dishes. I haven't tried them. I know people can be very reluctant to try new dishes but step outside of your comfort zone and for such a cheap price, what do you have to lose? For example, 辣子鸡 (salty pepper chicken), 三杯鸡 (3 cups basil chicken), 小炒肉 /小炒鸡 (seasoned beef or chicken). These dishes do not come in the styrofoam containers that most dishes will receive. They come in a plastic bowl with a clear top. If you go at peak hours, it can be very hard to find seating. But take a look around and see that the reason you can't find a seat is because of all the Chinese people eating there. That should indicate to you that the food is decent, even for them. One of my Chinese friends eats here almost every day. As others have said, look around what they are eating, and if it looks good, just ask what the dish is. This is my roommate from China's favorite Chinese restaurant in Oakland. He says they prepare the food like his mother did, but he also mentioned that he doesn't think his mother's cooking is that good. There is a rumor that Szechuan favors Asian students which seems to be true according to my roommate who was able to order meals after hours. Based on my experiences, the food quality and preparation time were on par with the other American style Chinese restaurants on the corner of Oakland Ave and Forbes.
