Honestly how can this place stay in business. Side salad was TINY the fries were cold the fish was dry and the Cole slaw had a funny taste like glue or alcohol, just weird taste. The overall quality of the food and accuracy of filling an order has gone from bad to worse. My last visit , to pick up an order to go was the final straw. A turkey dinner missing the cranberry sauce and gravy with stuffing hit so hard in the microwave , it was not edible. My chicken wrap was a soggy mess served with fries grossly overcooked (microwaved) and broken into pieces. This was not the first time we had results like this but it is certainly the last. We will never go back..As a side note, I started working at the Providence location as a dishwasher when I was in high school. Benny and Jimmy were basically running the place and it was the pride in the quality that was most impressive. I order through DoorDash: $15 for one pint of chili is outrageous, especially under the banner of "homemade," when it really tasted like something that came out of a bag you drop in a boiling pan to heat and serve; it tasted just as processed as what comes from Wendy's for half the price. Also, the owners of Chelo's really should secretly order from DoorDash for a quality check, because the food arrived as if they didn't care and just threw it in boxes. The packaging had no appeal. Here's a good hint: order from Applebee's and Chili's and take notes on how they pack their food for delivery for some ideas. Food, even humble food, deserves a gesture of care. I was in this part of the State and got a little hungry... I remembered that I had some Chelo's rewards point in my account so I went to this Chelo's for lunch. I sat at the bar since I was by myself. Up until 3pm, you can get some really good deals for lunch. I opted for the burger with curly fries. It was only $7.99. I asked for the burger medium and the curly fries well done....both came perfectly made. The beef patty was juice and well seasoned...the fries were very crispy and crunchy... the way I like them. The bun was nicely toasted and buttered...very fresh.... I had a really good filling lunch and after using my rewards points, my total out of pocket expense was $0.10...I gave the bartender $2 as a 20+% tip and I was a happy customer. read more

I've been going to Smithfield Chelo's every since they first opened. The last 3 times I have noticed a down grade in the kitchens cooking of the meals. Tonight I had chix parm. The pasta was actually dried out. The chix parm was black on the outside and dry inside. It's time for me to say sorry but I will not be returning. My go to restaurant is now the Atwood Grille where I have never had a poorly prepared and cooked meal. read more

Wife and I decided to sit at the bar. Plenty of room as we got in before the noon rush. And then the regulars came in. We were greeted by the bar tender right away, and service went downhill after that. Our order was served after what I thought was a long time and the regulars received there orders before us, not just 2 lunches, but 6. Wife had clam cakes without clams, and salty clam chowder. She doesn't use salt so I could excuse that. My roasted chicken wrap was delicious, onion rings were blah, small portion, and over cooked. A few dead french fries from the fryer were mixed in. Onion rings were an upcharge. Place does a brisk business and there is plenty of parking. My wife had a reasonably priced pina colada which was tasty, but light on the alcohol. Will we go back? Probably, but not our first choice. Chelos used to be my go to place for the steak sandwich and fish and chips since the 60's, so, like other restaurants over the year, food just isn't as good. Have gone to Chelo's a bunch of times and feel like the quality has consistently gone downhill while the prices have gone up. We typically go for burgers and apps and lately the burgers have been poorly made. We started with clamcakes and a quesadilla and the quesadilla was actually not too bad. The clamcakes were disappointing: extremely salty and spongy, not too crispy on the outside. They have been much better in the past. Last night we got burgers and they were blackened on the bottom and tasted of charcoal. Dry, grey, overcooked patties that may be previously frozen. The lettuce was wilted, white thinly shredded iceberg lettuce rather than romaine or butter lettuce. Had a mountain of raw onion. Served with fries that seem comparable to the frozen food section. It's obvious that Chelo's is cutting cost which simultaneously cuts quality. This burger was 100% not worth $14.99. The Chelo's menu features many items which have no published prices. Chelo's now charges $2.99 for a fountain drink. The drink had an extremely off taste, like something was wrong with the machine or the soda machine may had been dirty. $2.99 is absolutely insane for a soda. I got a side of cole slaw and it had no taste. It was served in the tiniest dish, about 3 bites, and again no published price on the menu yet was charged $3.59 for the tiniest, blandest cole slaw. We got a cup of chowder to go and it was also an extremely small serving for a whopping $6.49. Crazy! Overall a meal for 2 was $85 including tax and tip. read more

Went to Chelo's ( Greenville ) for years and enjoyed their fire roasted chicken wrap and buffalo wings but in the past year they fell prey to boosting profits and lower quality, shrinkflated offerings. The fire roasted chicken wrap shrunk by 30% and after that they cheapened the remaining ingredients to remove flavor even at the same price. Will never go there again. I used to love Chelos and the food is still good, but not as great as it used to. 4 times I have had the same server and at this point I expect him to mess up the order(just do not go too often unless I am with someone that wants too). Today I was surprised by the smaller portion of chicken parm at 18.99 and just pasta (not the one I asked for) and 2 chicken patties, literally a tablespoon of sauce in the middle of the pasta. Commented to my friend how you used to get a salad with an entree. Thought about it when I got home and checked the menu, says choice of salad. I love Chelo's! It's not only nostalgia, the food is darn tasty! My favorites are the Grilled Tuna and Swiss, RI Clam Chowder and Clam Cakes. Also, save room for dessert. Chelo's has the best chocolate fudge cake. The strawberry shortcake is enormous, the carrot cake is so moist and the Willie Wonka Pie is legendary! Just went here for my birthday for the Wilkie Wonka and my bestie got the strawberry shortcake. The noise level is moderate. You can have a conversation without yelling. Service is usually very good. Ordered the tuna melt. First, you dpn't see "tuna melt" on the menu. It's listed as GTS - you're supposed to know this means grilled tuna and swiss!!! It looked good when I got it, but the tunafish was very cold. It's like they toasted the bread and cheese, then just added very cold tuna. Generally I've had good experiences here. The food is lower priced than let's say Gregg's and with good variety. I like the lower priced margaritas as well. Today however didn't start too well. When we came in we asked for a booth and I specifically asked for one of the larger booths. There are 3 normal sized adults in our party. We were brought to a small booth by a young blonde woman. I politely asked if we could sit in a larger booth and pointed towards the larger booths in the middle. I was told those are reserved for larger parties. Then I informed the hostess that there are parties of two and three in the larger booths. A member of our party asked her again if we could sit in a larger booth. We were given a flat no. So I left and talked to the manager and we were moved to a larger booth. I mean seriously, I don't need to haggle over a booth. What happened the customer is always right? As many already know, Chelo's is a staple in RI with numerous locations throughout our little state. Their food is always consistent as are their prices. From appetizers to desserts you can find something on the menu to satisfy everyone. Today was a quick visit while I was in my lunch break from work and I was craving their awesome white clam chowder. It's always creamy and loaded with clams, and seasoned very nicely. This particular location happened to be a slow time for them when I grabbed my order. My children do not drink fluoridated water and they take their Yeti's with water from home everywhere we go. I have never had a restaurant deny them entry with their water bottles until last night at Chelo's in Smithfield. The hostess was rude about it. Even after I told her it was just water, she still refused us. So we left and went to Chili's who had no problem allowing us in with their water. Chelo's food is mediocre at best anyway. Chelo's is a great go to spot to grab a quick bite if your in the mood for burgers or sandwiches. They have great stuffies but they're seasonal, lent and summertime mostly. Was very happy that even on a Sunday Chelo's was open late for takeout orders. It wouldn't have been a proper trip to RI without a Lobster Roll, and this one was pretty good. The lobster mix was a bit too salty for my liking, but it was still plump and savory. The buttery roll it was served on was the star of the show- perfect ratio of crispy to chewy. The side of sweet potato fries were good, although a bit overcooked. The clam chowder, they offer red (gluten free 'Manhattan' style,) or white ('New England' style) was very good but no better than anywhere else I've been, even nowhere near the ocean. I wasn't wowed by the clam cakes either- I guess I was just expecting more. They were basically just bigger, oilier hush puppies. I didn't detect any clam in them. Maybe they're like crab rangoons that don't really have crab in them?! I'll definitely eat here again next time I'm in RI. I want to try the scallops and shrimp, and I love that they're a locally owned chain. Happy to support that. read more

Recently, I stopped in to Chelo's with wife and Dad in tow for lunch. When visiting RI I stop in a few times, recalling the restaurant du jour of my youth in Cumberland. It is always pleasant, but this trip was extra special. Upon being seated, we were warmly greeted by a young lady named Patricia, or as her colleagues share, "Patty". Patty was warm, patient, ever-vigilant and amicable throughout our entire experience. To steal a term from our Italian friends, she could easily be anyone's favorite Nonna. I share this because we were received and served as if we were sitting in her kitchen and were they only people she was focused on. Yet, as we watched her check on other patrons, it was clear that her warmth and charm exuded upon them as well. The food was, as usual, terrific! Great portions, served up hot. Two of us had a seasonal dish called the "Moon Pasta". No pun intended, but by meal's end we were "over the moon" with it! A most interesting dish of pasta, braised beef, a sofrito, demi-glazed and then garnished with fresh shredded parmesan cheese. Is your mouth watering yet? We were amazed at how much braised beef was hidden under the pasta and herb topping, served with excellent presentation. Just wow! Nonna's kitchen, homemade grub, served with lots of love!
