No frills diner dishing out classic breakfast and lunch to a working class clientele. Solid food, service a little slow when things get busy. But, if you're looking for standard American fare, the Chelan Cafe is one of the better places around to get it. read more

Just had dinner here with my Fiance. Me: Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes, green beans and a roll.... Fiance: Cod and Fries. I liked mine alot but I kept wanting to have it with white gravy instead of brown.. still ate almost all of it though. Fiance loved his fish. Left there complaining how FULL he was. LOL. I saw a pretty sweet looking cake on the cake plate on the counter and was tempted to get a slice... didnt though, cause we had no room for dessert. Oh, and A+ for the waitress... she reminded me of my grandma and made me feel like we were family. Met a couple of old friends here for lunch on Friday. My only complaint is that if you don't know the area, it is hard to find!. The waitress was a no-nonsense type. The service was quick, the food served hot. I had the Turkey & Swiss Dip, with grilled onions. The soft roll was stuffed with meat and cheese, and the au jus was not too salty. I had a cup of the homemade navy bean soup, it was excellent. The breakfast menu looked awesome, I will have to try it another time. read more

All of my coworkers go here all the time, so it was inevitable. I love the nautical decor that feels...comfortable. Sometimes you want a restaurant that serves good food and isn't trying to be something its not. I had a grilled cheese sandwich (wheat toast) with the wild rice chicken soup - served with a bag of potato chips - for a cool $5.49. Thats less than fast food is costing these days! What can you really expect from a diner? Well, I would at least expect courteous staff, clean dishes, and food that tastes decent. I got some decent food, but the rest was really lacking. My girlfriend had lipstick on her cup that was easily wiped off so I guess they're just lazy at cleaning dishes. We had to send our hashbrowns back because they were undercooked and a soggy mess. They didn't even reheat the bacon and sausage that were on the plate, so when we got it back it was just lightly crispier hashbrown with cold bacon and sausage. Not appetizing. The staff didn't really give a shit. I could hear them talking about how pissed they were that apparently the griddle they use for the hashbrowns isn't working properly. I think in those scenarios, where their equipment can't cook the food properly, it shouldn't be served. But hey, that's just me. read more

Stopped in here on a Saturday morning around 10 and was seated right away. I was surprised they were so fast considering the parking lot was packed. Pretty cool inside, I really like the retro Seattle memorabilia they have hanging on the walls. The food was pretty good and the service was fast and friendly. This place is happening! My boyfriend and I decided, 30 minutes before the Seahawks game, to watch the game here! SO MUCH FUN. The Seahawks crowd is incredible. They cheered, yelled, booed, cried, it was amazing. They offered all the patrons free slow cooked chicken tacos! So much yums. They have a normal selection of nationwide beers as well as a few local beers on tap. Only cider option is Angry Orchard. Full bar. Rainier TALL boys :) We enjoyed a delicious brunch at this place, very much greasy spoon and delicious. The eggs benny were so delicious. The hollandaise sauce was very flavorful! The Chelan breakfast sandwich was also delicious. The sausage patty on it was just so flavorful! Mmm! The prices are typical west seattle pricing (moderate 11-20/person). I love this joint. I live right down the street so we are quite the regulars. The waitresses are wonderful, they knew us by the second time we went in. Which means she always puts a cup of coffee on the table for me :) My boyfriend like to say its like having your mom cooking breakfast for you. The foods not bad either, exactly what you expect for a diner...greasy and filling. I suggest the BBIT (best breakfast in town) It consists of all the best things about breakfast all fried up together and served with very buttered toast! And for lunch i suggest the Ruben, Its great and even served with real horseradish none of that fake mayo horseradish! read more

A local breakfast spot that pulls in big crowds on weekends but is often fairly light on weekdays. Lots of regulars who know they can get a cup of coffee, eggs, meat, and toast for a fair price. I really want to like the Chelan Cafe. I like the idea of it; an old, comfortable, familiar place to grab breakfast that you know will be delicious. Unfortunately, after trying breakfast on three separate occasions - I'm done forcing myself to find something to like. I've always ordered things that I consider to be standard breakfast fare and I'm just always disappointed. The eggs definitely appear to be some of liquid egg, which wouldn't be a big deal if the other ingredients in the omlettes made you not notice that fact. Instead, they just come out as a clump of greasy food on a plate. The pancakes I've seen on dining companions plates look to be on par with what anyone with a box of pancake mix can turn out. The coffee is just below OK - drinkable, but with so much good coffee available, why would you? The two stars are for the fact that yes, the portions are big if you just want piles of food to shove in your face and prefer somewhere local instead of Denny's and the fact that they open early (but then again, so do Easy Street and Luna Park...). read more

Standard diner fare. Breakfast seems to be a specialty here, for good reason. There is an extensive menu of very appealing items. We arrived here around 1 pm on a Saturday. Interestingly, the server offered us only breakfast menus, though both breakfast and lunch specials were listed on the chalkboard. Not a problem, as we were interested in the breakfast menu. Our food arrived in a reasonable time, and everything was great. The hash browns are especially noteworthy -- light and crispy, and flavorful. The restaurant is located near the low bridge from West Seattle to Harbor Island, and is in an area that is decidedly industrial. Most of the customers were male. I suspect that they were eating lunch on a workday. The building appears to have housed two separate businesses, before the wall was partially removed. The second area is spacious, allowing for tables to accommodate a fairly large group. Because of the building's apparent history, there are two separate areas of restrooms, which can be a bit confusing. Finding your desired route after leaving the parking lot can be a bit challenging, as the array of bridges and intersections can be disorienting. Pay attention to your departure route before entering the parking lot. Overall, a great place to eat diner food. Service and food were both great. We did not explore the Ebb Tide bar, which is part of the facility. read more

Old school diner. Like legitimately old school with a road trip cafe kind of vibe. There is a bar area with seating and another large seating area. Still bit of a wait, this place seems popular. They have breakfast staples, pancakes and waffles and hash browns. I got pancakes cause I had been craving them for a while. We are staying at an Airbnb nearby and came here for breakfast twice. It's a busy place! The portions are huge, the prices are fair and the service was very good. It's a truckers and local place. We like coming here for breakfast, it is a good please to go if you are looking for standard breakfast food. They have all the reliable favorites. I generally get the two egg breakfast. I really like the quality of the bacon here, most places don't seem to understand or execute extra crispy requests, but they really do here. I would consider myself a regular here at the Chelan. I work at terminal 5 on weekends and come here for lunch. They have really paired down the menu, which is understandable considering the times and conditions we are under. What kills me is the quality has taken a deep dive. What I loved about the Chelan was their homemade soup made daily. Over the last month or so it has been horrendous. Today (11/14), I ordered the beef barely soup right out of the gate. Now, consider, I have had it here several times and it has been fabulous. On this visit it had the consistency of overcooked oatmeal, was pasty, had no beef flavor to speak of, had no recognizable beef chunks or vegetables, and was unseasoned. Sad. I mentioned this to the waitress and was pretty much dismissed outright. She brought me the bill, the soup wasn't removed or even discounted and when I asked about removing it she replied "maybe". Which was surprising considering my history there. Word of advice, don't order the soup and better yet, don't eat there. Waste of time and money. There are many other local greasy spoons to try and they may be more appreciative of the business. It actually pains me to have to write this review as I am not really a reviewer. I normally would just rave about the good places to eat and not even mention the bad. This was just "that bad". read more

Good food, slow service, long waits for a table in this very very small restaurant. No reservations so if it's a weekend, be prepared for a long wait, and bring snacks and/or games for your kiddos. Not good for kids, it's just way too small for loud guests or big groups. read more

Love The Chelan ... but have only one comment/request: They need longer hours on the weekend. The 70-80,000 people that drain out of WS every day for work are HOME on the weekends and may want breakfast after 1pm for gosh sakes! Would love to go on the weekends, but am never able to make the 1 o'clock cut-off. They turn people away at that time. Why not put on an extra shift and stay open until 4pm? This place quickly became me favorite early morning breakfast place! I like to grab a 7am breakfast with my mom on Sundays when she gets off of work at the hospital - we meet here and love it! We tried IHOP - nope. We tried Denny's - yuck. Then I saw Chelan was open at 6am so we tried it and have kept going back!! The place is a bit of a laid back almost "dive" place with a bar with sailors and the like - the people are simple and relaxed and there have been a few police eating there every time I go... The food is great. The Hashbrowns done JUST like I like em! and the staff are ALWAYS sweet and friendly for so early in the morning! The price is inexpensive and the food is worth it - much better than plenty of alternatives we tried! read more

Typical diner food - a step up from Dennys, to be sure, but otherwise, nothing to be enthused about. As a neighborhood joint, it certainly serves its purpose, but it's not really a destination. The service is not very good, even taking in consideration how busy Sunday brunches are. I solved this problem by sitting at the bar and forcing eye contact (after I had grabbed a menu off of a nearby table) and putting in an order. The bar is certainly an interesting place to get some local flavor, featuring off-duty dock workers drinking rather heavily - if you've watched the 2nd season of the Wire, you know what I'm talking about. An example from the last time I was there: the gentleman next to me had racked up a $60 dollar tab before noon, and was complaining about needing to go into work in a few hours. The man just past him was asleep on the counter. Every touchdown resulted in the bar breaking out into cheers. I would come here to drink, but food is secondary. read more

Hair!!!! A big old white one thick enough to be a porcupine quill was on my English muffin. I thought I saw something on my muffin, but covered it in jelly. Nothing like pulling a hair out of your mouth after breakfast. Too thick to be human hair, hoping it was someone's pet's hair. BTW I am not going back. read more
