what kind of a delivery restaurant takes 2 hours to get food to a resident? lol. This one.

Really bad experience! Ordered two dishes - Chicken Low Mein and Cashew Chicken for dinner. The lo mein noodles were tough, and sauce rancid. The Cashew Chicken was under-cooked and had big chunks of hard, uncooked, cold raw carrots and baby corn. i returned both dishes after taking one bite but they insisted on charging me for one dish. DO NOT go to this place. The under-cooked chicken and rancid sauces may actually be dangerous for your health. I am reporting them to the Health authorities. read more

Had used them several times via Grubhub for delivery. Normally, decent food received about on time. Last time I ordered will be the last time from the restaurant. Ran an hour late on delivery and was missing several items. Working with Grubhub eventually got the bill adjusted but calling the restaurant it was clear they were overwhelmed. Sorry to see it a victim of it's own success but a few too many competitors to put up with the last late, incomplete, cold delivery. read more

I work at a software company, and I am the only person on my team who is not Chinese. So when we had a group lunch and a dozen of my coworkers took me here saying that they have really, really good Chinese food, I was excited. I love trying strange and interesting new dishes, and I love spicy food, so I was in heaven. (I was told) Authentic Szechuan food, a lot of it is very spicy but not all, the pigs' feet were the best I've ever had (little basis for comparison but they were very spicy and dang dong delicious!), and as the other reviews have said, order from the Chinese menu not the American-Chinese one. Whenever I am in the mood for Chinese this is my first choice. A few standouts for me - the stewed pigs feet, cold tripe appetizer with chili oil and garlic, and the sizzling lamb stir-fried with peppers, fragrant with cumin and served in a tiny wok over a sterno flame so it was still sizzling at the table. really nasty cooking. we ordered 1. fish and toufu, 2, spicy beef tripe 3. sauteed pig kidney. none of made right. neither tasting nor amount. we only have 6 pieces of fish, rest are toufu and very salty sauce. less than 10 piecea of beef tripe...thin like paper, rest are vegatable with salty sauce, the worst thing is pig kidney is still raw! with blood! and the price is extremly high for such nasty cooking! i will never go there again. read more

Worst Chinese Food I've ever had. I see a lot of old reviews that gave this place decent ratings so something must have changed with the new management/chef. My wife and I were in the neighborhood and decided to stop in thinking that you can't go wrong with Chinese food even if it's not the best. Boy, were we wrong about that. Forget about the ambiance, service, lack of fresh circulated air/AC and standing at the door for 5 minutes waiting to be seated. We can look passed these things since we're really there for the food. We ordered: spring rolls, Teriyaki Beef, Kung Pow Chicken and the Phoenix and Dragon and all of the dishes were barely edible. The Teriyaki beef didn't taste like Teriyaki and the meat on the skewers was so chewy and fatty that you could barely separate them, much less chew or swallow. The shrimp was the only thing I believe was real and it was chewy and difficult to stomach. It was covered in a think pasty batter that didn't appear to be cooked correctly and had no flavor. In short, nothing tasted right. I think they used fillers and fake meat for the most part and when they did use real meat, it had to have been the worst cut. We will not be returning. The worst food. We went there after a movie & it was not my first time here. I had been before on a crowded Satruday night & ordered from the Chinese Menu & at that time I thought it was fine so I went back. This time I ordered from the American menu 'cos I had a friend with me. The food was just not good. It was fresh no doubt & the place is clean- but it totally lacked taste. Why would 3 King Pao- chicken, beef & shrimp be full of carrots- & no trace of water chestnuts as descibed. & skimped on the shrimp. No tase whatsoever. The shrimp noodles too were not good, & 1 more dish was the shrimp with vegetables which was so so. When I asked the waitress why my dish was filled with carrots & not a trace of water chestnuts- she said the menu was oudated- really??? The whole dinner was below standard. Well I gotta say, haven't ordered fro here is a few years. I was excited to try it and was dissaponted. I guess next time, because of the reviews I just read, I should order from a different Sichaun menu? What I got, standard American Chinese was pretty bad. Egg Rolls: good, Dumplings: doughy, with unflavorful dipping sauce. Hot and Sour Soup: very good. General Tso's Chicken, tasted like Trader Joe's Tempura Chicken, yet not as good. Moo Shu Pork: eh. No crepe like egg pancake, flour tortillas instead, sauce was a gloopy paste, like the bottom of a Hoisin Sauce jar. Pork and cabbage were in a watery sauce. Not good. Nothing was spicy or flavorful. Where do I get this other menu? I just dropped $35 bucks on food I didn't think was worth saving the left overs. read more

OK we are frequent customers of this restaurant and up until yesterday, we have been pretty satisfied with the overall experience. The service has never been this restaurant's strong point... actually the wait staff is actually on the rude side... but for the many years (recently almost once a week) that we've been coming to them we've tolerated it because the food is decent authentic Chinese food... That was until yesterday night... We ordered the salt and pepper eggplant (on the Sichuan menu) and it was awful. My bf and I each took a bite and immediately spit it out. First of all it was super greasy.. you could press the eggplant and see the oil ooze out of it... and secondly, since when do eggplants taste like a potato? It was down right disgusting. We immediately asked if the waitress could change the dish for something else because we really didn't like it, without checking she said no, so we explained to her that we did not like it and would not eat it because it was so disappointing and she just smiled and said sorry. The part that upsets me the most is that when she went towards the back of the restaurant, the staff was asking what happened and she said that we didn't like the dish- so here's the kicker... someone so bold to say, well that's what they ordered so that's what they got. I'm thinking to myself... look, I know what this this should taste and look like and it's definitely not that. I mean the entire staff doesn't seem to really care.. another waitress came up to us and asked us if we wanted to pack the dish to go and we were like no... just throw it out.. we didn't like it... and you would think as wait staff, you'd ask why... we'll not the case here. So NO, we will no longer be going back there and we will not be recommending this restaurant to other; so they lost not just our business but others as well. I have been here many times. This is one of the best authentic Chinese restaurants in Fairfax county.

The food here is good like most Chinese food places. I ate Worst customer service ever. They don't know how to say please and thank you. I pay for extra meat and I noticed it would look the same as when I don't get extra meat. So I counted and I let them know and they had nothing to say. Not even a sorry. "You wan mo chicken?" Is what they said. They usually give me a neighbor discount since I work next near them sometimes. Today a young guy laughed and said we don't give discounts to any one. I asked if it was a new policy and he smiled and with a sarcastic tone told me he had been there for a long time and they don't do that. His other co worker told me herself to let the manager know that I work nearby so she can start giving me the discount. That manager was there today. I told him to ask her and he did and came back and didn't apologize for making me feel like I was lying to save a dollar. I called his boss over and explained and I told her for this kind of disrespect and unnecessary sarcasm in front of people I don't even want your discount and I won't ever eat here again. I ordered chicken broccoli and 1 egg roll, the broccoli wasn't even cook right! It was still hard. The chicken was soggy and had an unpleasant taste. Honestly could not even finish the food. Tried their Sichuan menu, had Dan Dan noodles, sliced peppercorn beef with cilantro, beef in sizzling pot and fish spicy beans in hotpot. The Dan Dan was really good, beef cilantro was great also. Beef in sizzling pot was a bit on the salty side, but goes really well with rice. The fish hotpot was different from what I expected, the fish had fishbones still intact, and it's in a broth, I was expecting fish filet, but there were so many fish bones that one needle bone pierced the roof of my mouth. Ouch I know. I grew up eating boned fish when I was young, maybe I have lost that touch. I wish I had known it wasn't fish filet. Plus the bones got mixed in the soup, so we had to eat very carefully. So I wouldn't recommend the fish in hotpot, the broth was too gooey for my taste and I have had better experience at other places. Would I come back here again? Why not, the food was pretty authentic, I think what they can do to improve this place is to update the interior, it looks too outdated. The service was standard, not amazing, but wasn't terrible either, they were pretty slow on a Friday night at 8pm. Only had 2 tables when we came in and seems like most people there ordered from the American menu. China Star is easily the best Chinese place in Northern Virginia. Since eating here several years ago, I haven't eaten at another Chinese restaurant since. Make sure to order off the Chinese menu. For spicy food lovers, order the beef with wild peppers, dan dan noodles or szechuan chili fish. If you order from the American menu, as many of the people below have, you will be disappointed. Well, after having read some reviews earlier this year I had great hopes for this place as a pick up location while picking up and dropping off daughter at George Mason University. I dropped her off today while making a return and the nearby Bed, Bath and Beyond. She ordered our usual faer of Americanized dishes (dumplings, Mongolian beef, spring roll, sauteed mixed vegetable, orange flavored chicken). Ugh. Big mistake. I didn't know about the authentic menu. DO NOTO ORDER FROM THE AMERICANIZED MENU. It is awful. Just awful. Bland and tasted like it had been sitting for hours under a heat lamp. The Orange Flavored chicken are not solid pices of chicken but rather little clumps of chicken covered in heavy coating and then cooked. They were doughy and had no crunch. I lost interest after five bites. Daughter and husband agree. AND THEY FORGOT THE SPRING ROLLS! We didn't discover this until we got home. I may try again and focus exclusively on the Chinese menu, but am very disappointed with this evening's dinner. Learn from my mistake - go with the Chinese menu! read more

went there again. apparently they changed management, waiters and possibly the chef. good people are gone. food becomes subpar. service is horrible. and they directly charge tips (above 20%) to the bill. I usually tip 18-20%, but when I feel 'forced' to pay something doesn't live up to it, I will not go there any more. it's a shame for them to do that. read more

Extremely rude delivery man, insisted that I tip by cash rather than card for no reason and called his manager at the door to voice his complaint. The food itself wasn't too great either. The crabmeat cheese wontons were far too hard for my liking and the General Tso's chicken was basically drowning in it's own sauce. This was my second time there, the first time 4 years ago and I didn't like it then. The shrimp dish was too garlicky, and the vegetables too soft. The moo shu was soaking wet and too salty. Service was poor, food was thrown at us from the side of the table, I've never had that happen, the waitress couldn't even smile. We agree with JP's earlier review that that the dishes have very different flavors and presentation compared to what we remembered. If you want to try some Americanized Schizuan style Chinese food, this is the place for you. Kong Pao chicken was too chewy and my weife thought the cook fried the chicken too long before stir fried it with chili and peanuts. The noodle in the house special lo mein was way too soft and over cooked. The spicy beef tripe was staled. We probably won't be back here again. read more

I ordered 2 dinners and a soup for delivery. 30 minutes after my order is placed, I receive a call that they were out of sweet and sour pork (It's only 6:30pm on a weekday). The staff asked if I would mind changing it to sweet and sour chicken. I told them that I wouldn't mind, however they didn't offer anything (no free egg roll or coupon). another 45 minutes later, my food still hasn't shown up so I call again, inquiring about my order. The employee puts me on hold, but I can hear her speaking with another customer. She returns to the phone to inform me that the driver just left with my food and he will be at my house shortly. 20 minutes later the driver finally shows (they are less than a mile away from my house). The food was not spectacular; very little flavor, just a bit of heat. They offered nothing for the exorbitant amount of time I waited. They didn't even get the order completely right, as I asked for fried rice with one meal and I received white rice with both. I will never order from them again as their customer service and food was quite less than satisfactory. read more

I live up the street from this place so we order allot from them delivery. They are always fast and the food is always really good. Recently I have gotten the crispy beef and my bf had gotten the pork fried rice with hot and sour soup. Delivery team is always fast and polite upon arival. A+ read more

I've been going to China Star for several decades, and it DEFINITELY is NOT AS GOOD under its new management. It is TOTALLY changed, and not for the better. Soup noodles are greasy, egg rolls lack filling and very greasy, soups less vegetables, low mein mostly spaghettii not low mein noodles and not properly cooked and little pork, fired rice not good rice and poorly cooked.......all very disappointing. Wow, as an ABC, american born chinese, if you are willing to try real chinese food from China (that is the spicy stuff), then this is a good place to start. Called to ask what ingredients were in the special foo young. I was told it was chicken and pork. When I got the order it was mostly small gross shrimp. My least favorite food. Also the foo young was bland - the worst I've ever tasted - and the gravy sauce that was provided made it even worse. The wontons were just okay and the sour soup was good. The customer service when ordering was unpleasant as was the delivery to my work place. The delivery man was in my work office screaming into his cell phone when I was trying to sign the slip. Ordered delivery to my office building because I could not leave office. Driver refused to park and bring order up to 3rd floor as instructed, insisted I come downstairs to get order. When I directed where to park (TWICE), driver called restaurant - owner called and yelled that I was being ridiculous for not coming down to get order (despite paying for delivery). There is a multi-car space that is designated for delivery right in front of building door. read more

The food is very delicious and, in my opinion, the best Chinese food in the area. The only downside is if you order online and ask for a delivery at a later time they never look at that time. They will just deliver it right away. It makes it a little irritating when you want to order in advance, especially if you are busy. read more

If you like Szechuan-style Chinese food, this is an excellent choice. The restaurant is spacious, comfortable and casual, and the service is excellent. I have always ordered off the traditional menu after reading other reviews here. The staff is always willing to accommodate you, and if something isn't on the menu they will do their best to produce it out of their kitchen. read more
