Really interesting menu and not your typical Chinese restaurant decor except for the pond at the entrance. The menu has some items that required googling. We wanted to get the pork buns but were told it would take 40 minutes so we got the pork dumplings instead. They were okay. The scallion pancakes were amazing and we loved the sauce which managed to help out the pork dumplings. We also got the pizza sandwich which was yummy. For entrees we got curry chicken, sesame chicken(crunchy and juicy), Mongolian beef(very tender) and the Peking pork chops. We loved all except the pork chops which were too saucy and by the time we got them we were already full. Service was ok although she took a long time to take our dinner order(we could have ordered the pork buns ) All in all I highly recommend this restaurant. Everyone has been talking about Chef Wang, so my wife and I decided to give it a try especially since we live in the same town. We arrived on a Wednesday night, were greeted and seated immediately. For drinks we each had a Zombie, awesome. For dinner we shared 2 entrees, Mu Shu Pork with 4 pancakes and Sesame Chicken. The Mu Shu Pork was good, however the pancakes were a little thin, hard to wrap, the Sesame Chicken was great, crispy and tasty with just enough spice. The service was great, friendly and efficient and the décor was nicely renovated. I could tell because I remember the last few restaurant establishments so I can see the improvement. Chef Wang has become our go-to place for local Szechuan cuisine. "Local" means within 15 minutes of us. With the COVID-19 crisis we all are amid, finding quality takeout food has become increasingly challenging especially since many restaurants have closed for the time being. We learned that Chef Wang was still open for takeout and have made multiple trips here over the past couple of weeks. Each time, we had ordered three dishes for lunch and the food was ready within 20 minutes. Altogether, we have ordered Pad Thai, Vegetable Chow Mei Fun, Mongolian Beef, Beef with Mixed Vegetables, General Tso's Chicken, & Sesame Chicken. Each dish has been well prepared, delicious, & piping hot. And we have had enough food with each 3-dish order we have placed to get two meals out of it. Like most places these days, they are enforcing social distancing and most recently only allowed one customer inside at a time (which we applaud & appreciate). Our recent order was placed on the Yelp app, so we were notified when our food was ready for pickup. In the meantime, we just (safely) sat in our car for a few minutes since we arrived before our food was ready. We hope that once the outbreak concerns are gone that we can enjoy a dine-in meal. For now, however, we will happily keep Chef Wang's in our short rotation for takeout. read more

Above average Chinese restaurant with great service! We often have our family dinners here and this place is consistently good. They actually have pretty authentic cuisine and I give them extra props for how they prepare their fish. The flavor is good, they cook it just right and they definitely have a pretty deep menu with plenty of options and styles that aren't commonly found in other Chinese restaurants. I actually recommend this place for big parties. It's a great family/friend gathering type of place. The restaurant is pretty spacious and they also have a little sushi counter as well which is a nice touch. It's good that they have a decent Chinese place outside of the obvious places like Flushing Queens etc so that folks in the LI area have a good option to consider beyond the normally Chinese restaurant-heavy areas. 100% recommended! Chef Wang was absolutely delicious. Authentic. This was my first time there. There are certain dishes (my favorites) that I like to use on first visits. Szechuan places...it's always Ma Po Tofu. I loved it. Perfectly extra spicy. Lots of chiles and Szechuan peppercorns. I so love the combination of heat with the mild numbing effect of Szechuan peppercorns. You gotta try it if you have not. The menu is amazing, incredible variety with some items I've never seen in a Chinese restaurant... lamb, rabbit... frog! Don't worry you can still get Mongolian Beef if you're not feeling adventurous. My husband was delighted to see a few duck options available. If you like sushi, plenty of choices there too. We were pretty hungry this time so we just forced ourselves to make choices from the extensive list or we would have been there for hours. My husband and I ate lunch here yesterday. The food and service were both great and definitely stand above your average Chinese food restaurant. We ordered the wonton soup and the pork buns to start. The pork buns do take a while to make but they are totally worth the wait! They are also actually pork soup dumplings, not what you are expecting when you think of pork buns. For entrees we ordered the general tso chicken with a side of fried rice and the sesame chicken. Both were delicious and the portions are huge. We ended up taking some home. read more

Chef Wang on yelp had great reviews and was the next exit so so we went. Don't judge a book by its cover! Outside of restaurant didn't know what to expect. But parking lot was packed which is good sign. It's a huge restaurant inside! Very lovely. Extensive menu of both chinese and Japanese cuisine. I wish I knew our waitress name as she was wonderfully patient and attentive. We had very high maintenance customer in our party. I want this, but no this in it. This isn't on the menu but can you make it. The portion is too big, make it small for me etc. (It's a relative of mine so it is what it is) This waitress answered all her questions, told her eat what she can and take rest home, said chicken chow main could be made, had chicken fried rice made without vegetables etc. WOW! After moving to the island, where Asian food can't compare to the Chinatowns of New York, we have been on a hunt for "decent" Chinese food. We finally had a chance to sample takeout from Chef Wang recently and it was delish!! We especially enjoyed the beef stew noodle soup, which was spicy as fck but so aromatic and tasty! Portions were also generous, which is the reverse of what we've witnessed during the COVID pandemic, as restaurants are raising prices and shrinking serving sizes. This place is a neighbourhood gem and staple for some solid Chinese food! While there are A LOT of other Chinese takeout restaurants in new Hyde park, this place is one of those family style restaurants that tastes great when you order out, and you have a fantastic time when you're there in person too! My biggest thing is I love love love Sichuan food and chef Wang does it extremely well, as well as executing the more American style Chinese dishes really well! My personal faves are the hot and sour soup, crispy fried chili fish with peanuts (unsure of the menu name but whenever I call and ask for this they always know what I mean lol!), the crispy shredded beef, the sautéed broccoli, mapo tofu. Honestly I haven't ever had a dish here where I was disappointed!! The customer service at Chef Wang Restaurant is the rudest customer service I have ever encountered anywhere. I'm rating only on a customer service experience. Today 10/23/21 at approximately 2:00 pm, I tried to call in an order for pick up . The guy who answered the phone to take my order was so rude. I ordered 10 different dishes that I discovered through Yelp which prior customers posted pictures of on Yelp. So I was able to find all those dishes on the menu except one dish which was posted by a customer who called it Liang Pi Mung Bean jelly salad(cold dish). When I asked him about this dish, he was so rude. He said, "we don't take Orders from customer's pictures so let's just forget the whole order" and then he cancelled my entire order worth $150. If you want a huge menu that's more like a mini novel of Chinese dishes this definitely is for you. I'm going to say that I appreciate the offerings, but sometimes less is more. I definitely really enjoy the cumin lamb, but the chicken and broccoli has that generic corner Chinese food vibe to it. The sauce with the broccoli alone was really good, but it ends up looking like a bowl of soup because it's drowned in it. The people are so nice and the restaurant is beautiful, but I think if they had a smaller menu they could bring the quality of their dishes up just a notch. I'll give the dumplings the benefit of the doubt since I had takeout and they were soft by the time I ate them, but at the end of the day it's probably just a bit above your average "king house" Chinese takeout restaurant. read more

A good 6 days since I have been to this restaurant, and I'm still drooling over the food we ate... Being a die hard SCHEZUAN LOVER, I really didn't think it was possible to get such AUTHENTIC, FLAVORFUL, clean, and tongue numbing spicy food anywhere other than Flushing, especially located in Long Island. Chef Wang completely blew those expectations away. Everything we ordered was phenomenal. From the juicy and flavorful XIAO LONG BAO (soup dumplings - "soup pork buns"), to the crispy, spicy ORANGE CHICKEN and HOT CHILI OIL FISH FILET, we enjoyed everything to the last drop. We couldn't get over how amazing everything was. The hot chili oil fish filet was served in a hot pot type of soup - very spicy, tender, flaky, and TONGUE NUMBING yummy! Since it was just two of us and we didn't want to over-order, we reluctantly decided we would save other dishes we wanted to try for our next visit. Be sure to ask for their hot chili oil on the side - it's a must! It adds great HEAT to everything. Everything was also fairly priced and service was good. Chef Wang is truly a hidden GEM. Chef Wang is located in New Hyde Park on a commercial street full of restaurants and various other non-food businesses. We were pleased to find that the restaurant has its own parking lot. We arrived on a Saturday night at around 6 and easily found a spot. The entrance is full of neon, so immediately I felt a nice festive vibe. Inside, I couldn't help but feel like I was in a ski lodge. This was accentuated by the Christmas decorations places around the dining room. As for the two dining rooms, they are decorated in browns and beiges. One room had a towering ceiling. Perhaps I'm easily impressed, but these rooms gave me feelings of grandeur and importance. The reason why we came to Chef Wang's was the promise of genuine Sichuanese food in New Hyde Park. On that point, it did not disappoint. When value for your money is considered, Chef Wang definitely surpasses its competitors in Flushing and nearby. For our small party, we ordered stir-fried spinach and garlic, Chongqing chicken, yangchow fried rice, and a salt and pepper pork belly dish with leeks. The Chongqing chicken was as good as any you would get in Flushing, plus it was gigantic! At around $18, it was the best value for the dollar I've seen. The salt and pepper pork belly with leeks was also an excellent dish with lots of aromatics thrown in. All four dishes were served in true family sizes, without the usual Chinatown upcharge. We were very happy about this as I am usually against all the nickel and diming that you get from some Chinese restaurants. From what I gather, you get a fair portion for your dollar. Service here is attentive and I remember my water cup being filled at least 4 times. They also gladly places all the leftovers in takeout boxes. I will say that Chef Wang will definitely be in our list of restaurants to visit when we return to the area. read more

I would have given them three and a half stars, but instead rounded it up to 4 for a couple of reasons. Most of the food was really good, and the service issue was likely due to this being the waitress' second day on the job. We were there today for lunch - we arrived about noon. We saw the reviews on here, and checked out the menu on their website, and so decided to go with the lunch specials. According to their website, the lunch specials are available 7 days a week which is nice. When we saw the menu in the restaurant, it was only listed as available from Monday through Friday. When we asked about it, we were told that the lunch special was indeed available today (Saturday). Not sure why the discrepancy from the online menu to the actual menu, but since they were honoring it, I didn't really see a problem and just wanted people to be aware. (Anyone coming into the restaurant without seeing an the online 7 day-a-week lunch menu will likely order the menu items at the higher prices, so it really should be consistent on ALL menus.) My dad ordered the Hunan Chicken with wonton soup, and we ordered the Beef with Black Bean sauce and the Sushi three roll lunch special. Since my dad loves having variety, we also ordered the pork lo mein for the table. Our waitress asked if we want the lo mein as an appetizer or with our main courses, and we told her to bring it with the main courses. We got our soup (and my salad that came with the sushi lunch), and as soon as our soup was brought to the table, our lo mein arrived. It felt like we now had to rush through our soup in order to enjoy the lo mein while it was still hot. Not sure where the communication broke down between our waitress and the kitchen, but that really shouldn't have happened especially after she asked specifically when we wanted it. Since we had learned earlier that it was only our waitress' second day on the job, instead of saying something, we decided to just let it go. Soup was pretty good from what I was told, and the salad was good as well. The only thing I would suggest is to drain the water from the salad before putting on the dressing. It's a bit unpleasant to get down to the bottom and have a puddle of water in the bowl. The dressing was better than most - so that's a good thing. I got the sushi three- roll lunch - eel/avocado, salmon/cucumber and tuna/cucumber. The salmon roll came out with avocado (instead of cucumber), but I didn't bother changing it - I like it either way. I'll be honest - the sushi was less than great. In fact, I would call it mediocre at best. The sauce for the eel roll wasn't the right sauce. My advice would be to stick with the Szechuan or Hunan style foods, and stay away from the sushi and raw fish. It is definitely not their expertise. The Hunan Chicken was delicious, although it was not really spicy at all even with the few chilis in the dish. Since it was supposed to be spicy (according to the menu), the spice should really be adjusted. The Beef with Black Bean Sauce was delicious as well - flavorful and tender beef in a luscious black bean sauce. The lo mein was pretty good - although not the best we have had. I definitely think we will stick to the Hunan and Szechuan food if we go back. We actually decided to share a couple of desserts. We got the Manhattan Truffle (an ice cream dish with cherry ice cream in a shell of dark chocolate, and a Pistachio Truffle (pistachio ice cream in a shell of white chocolate). They were pretty good, and it was nice having a sweet ending to our meal. I have to say, even with the little service glitch, we still tipped over 20% because our waitress, although new, was constantly smiling. That smile goes a long way with customers.
