First time at Sushi Republic met up with several gal pals for lunch. Funny thing we all went for the bento box and the food was good. Had the salmon and it was cooked right. The soup was flavorful. My friends mixed the soup with their rice. It was a cold and windy day. Everyone wanted hot and warm food. Service was good. Staff was attentive and came to refill out teas. Tea was not hot and just warm. Go for the lunch special. Lots to select from. Interior of restaurant nicely decorated and spacious. Ample private rooms to have parties. What was supposed to be a joyful class reunion was ruined when a waiter--citing the large crowd--rudely told us to leave to make room for others. This place is just okay. Came here to eat lunch yesterday. They have all you can eat for $19.95(?), basically under $20 plus tax and tip per person. They have a sheet that you are able to get made to order appetizers, hand rolls and special rolls from the kitchen. Soft drinks are included and dessert can be added at an additional cost. Food came quickly, we ordered miso soups to begin with a garden salad and spicy Kani salad - which turned out to be not spicy. We also got 1 order of shumai and an assortment of rolls to share. The regular hand rolls never made it to us. The shumai and appetizers were as expected. The rolls were just okay. They basically all tasted the same. The menu said mango, but there was no mango and they either have the eel sauce or the spicy mayo slathered on top. Overall just an okay experience. Sushi republic is my favorite sushi spot to go to, I always do the all you can eat menu when I dine-in. Theres a good selection of fish and the nigiri pieces always come out looking beautiful. The kitchen menu is pretty great with a large selection and is usually served before the sushi unless they're very busy. Me and my girlfriend love to go on dinner dates here and look at the fishes in the fish tank or sit under the flower vignette, that being said they do have a light thats been flickering the past couple times hopefully its fixed next time I stop by. Came here on Friday night. We were seated promptly. There wasn't any wait. Service was good and attentive. Now onto the food... extremely disappointed. The portions of sashimi are laughable! Look at the images. They are like sample sizes. Yes, I get you can order multiple rounds of it, but each piece is so small. It also takes them a while to bring out the food! The cooked foods, breading is thick on everything that is fried. The portions are also so small. The short ribs are all bones. The calamari rings are small too. The fried oyster had a sliver of oyster with a very thick layer of batter. How is it ok to serve this food? Also, for what you get, it's expensive! When my fried rice still has the white rice color after it's been fried, that means I can guarantee it has zero flavor and I was right. It was so bland and it didn't come with any hot sauce (my fault for that I guess. I should've requested it). Their sushi was ok. I ordered the spicy Kani roll (imitation crab meat) and eel roll lunch special, which came with miso soup. I was searching for Japanese lunch specials options on Grubhub and I came across this restaurant. The Grubhub menu had a variety of lunch specials and I went with the Shrimp Tempura Bento Box with miso soup ($15). This bento box contained California roll, salad with ginger dressing, fried shrimp shumai and shrimp tempura plus a side of steamed white rice. Grubhub delivery was another story because the delivery person was doing multiple deliveries. It took a hour to get my order and I got worried that by the time I got my food that the tempura would start turning soggy. The delivery guy dropped off my food in front of the door and rang to bell to indicate that it's here. When I opened the door, the delivery person was gone I couldn't determine whether he had a mask and/or wore gloves. I took precautions and washed my hands after bringing the bag to the kitchen. Then when I unwrapped everything, I was impressed of how each items were packed. The soup and rice were still warm. Sauces were individually packed. The bento box looked very appealing and the tempura and shumai still looked crispy. I transferred my miso soup into the bowl and devoured it followed by the salad which was lettuce and arugula that went well with the ginger dressing. The bento box was starting to cool to almost room temperature so I had to devour all my fried items, thanks goodness I have starving to savor their respective crispiness. The California rolls were on point, never tasted so good especially I have not had it in years. The bento box overall hit the spot, however, I should pick up my order instead of having it delivered. Its been a while since I've eaten here and tonight, I decided to try it out again seeing that the last few reviews appeared pretty decent. BOY was it a mistake! We opted for the AYCE option and went with an order of fried oysters, fried shrimp, seaweed salad, kani salad, and a scallion pancake to start. NOTHING, and I mean absolutely nothing was good. The scallion pancake were pale and flacid. The seaweed salad lacked acid (and I'm not even sure how this is possible being that most of this stuff comes prepared in a container for them anyway), the kani salad was pale and bland, and the oysters were nothing but breading. When our sushi platter came, it looked pretty good. However, like usual fashion, none of the sashimi (the more expensive things) made it to the platter. We ordered 3 special rolls along with a 8 pieces of sushi. While I completely understand the standard of having a heavy hand on rice for AYCE places (it's how they make $ and I totally get it) but this was out of control. The sushi rice itself was packed super dense under each sliver of fish and what made it worse was the borderline gumminess of the rice. There was enough rice in each sushi to make at least 2 regular size ones from any given AYCE places around the neighborhood. The roles themselves were not much better. As you can tell from my photo, everything was filler! You're pretty much paying $30/pp to eat flavored panko, breading, and gummy rice. Its so not worth the price! I gave this place another shot because of the special items they have on the menu (soft shell crab for spider rolls and fried oysters) but they were nothing but carbs! With tax and tip, our bill was $74 and for that price, I would have much rather ordered a poke bowl, along with sides and other fixings. Such a disappointing place. OH!!! For a long time I had a grudge against Sushi Republic. You see, the building that currently houses this respectable sushi spot used to be a very different restaurant. Pomodorino was its name and Italian food was its game. Yeah yeah, there's still another location in Huntington, but it was at this Hillside Ave home that I really started to fall in love with Italian food. So when it closed, and Sushi Republic eventually took its place, I secretly hoped one day Pomodorino would return...after visiting SR, I can recant that statement. Yep, Sushi Republic is the real deal. They run the AYCE game nicely and have a full menu of Asian goodies to be had. Their interior setup is classically themed in style and almost makes you feel like you're dining somewhere other than New Hyde Park. Oh and might I add in the alcoholic options and deals? I will! Let's break it down a little further. Actually, let's start with the adult beverages as Sushi Republic, when doing AYCE on a Monday-Thursday, offers you 1 free Sapporo or draft beer as well as half off on sake and all other beer bottle options. You can't go wrong with a deal like that. They were unfortunately out of Sapporo and so my dining buddy and I each got a small carafe of sake (which they gave to us as the free drink instead). Right on. From there, it was all about the food ordering which works on the paper slip process. They'll place one of these sheets on your table and all you have to do is check off which apps or soups or rolls or dishes you want and voila, they'll be out in a jiffy (the wait time wasn't too bad on any item). The night we went, I needed to start things off on a soul-warming front and so I went with a bowl of hot and sour soup (which totally did the trick). Edamame and pork gyoza also rounded out the starters and sufficed for what tastes they bring to the table. From there, it was time to dive into the name of this nation, sushi! I'm not a big experimentalist when it comes to the land of rolled up fish and wasn't in a super sushi mood that evening, but I do know what I like and the Shrimp & Lobster Roll (rock shrimp tempura topped with spicy lobster and kani) sounded like a winner. No frills about this roll, but it was tasty, tender, and gave off the flavors I have hoped for, as did my order of chicken fried rice that I just needed to have in completing this AYCE night. Overall, Sushi Republic seems to be a strong and worthy adversary in the battle of the sushi kingdoms (huh?). Basically what I'm trying to say is I'd definitely return to Sushi Republic for another bout of eating (and honestly, more sushi after only having one roll and seeing a few others that looked appetizing). So even though this place marks the end of a childhood love of mine (Pomodorino), I'm down with this sushi spot and willing to make it a regular dining location.
