This is the second time I've eaten at this location. The first time it has been a while, but I remember it being better. First of all the smell was awful. It smelt like wet dog, so it made the whole experience even worse. All of the chicken dishes that were sauced were very soggy and some of them didn't really even have much meat. It was just the breading. The sweet-and-sour chicken was extremely tough and seemed like it had been refried. The only thing that I enjoyed was the eggroll, which still wasn't the best that I've had the lo mein and the fried rice was good, but very low on the list of my favorite fried rice. The waitress was very attentive and always had a refill coming. The picture is actually from my last visit as I forgot to take one this last time.

This is my 'go to' Chinese Buffet in Frederick, for those days that I plan to have 'one big meal' for the day... There is nothing amazing, and nothing negative about this buffet. It's not much different than other larger ones. The food quality is consistent, and the variety is large! They have Sushi and Hibachi stations too. I recommend it!

Roach at that came out behind our table

Looked like a nice place until you sat down and started eating and the roaches started coming out. I notified the staff they apologized but the manager just said, "oh we just put poison out two days ago, that's why they are coming out. I will give you ten percent off of your bill." Not going back there.

They have some small decorations here and there throughout the changing season but not much that take spaces. The temperature inside dining area always warm and warmer, which is comfortable, except if you need a restroom check, it's always cold there. The restrooms also clean most of the time. The buffet food area are the amazing part! They, the restaurant, always check on each food containers and refill anything that's looking less full than the container. All food are served hot, warm cool or cold as they supposedly serve and most importantly all are fresh food from the kitchen. The hibachi part also an amazing addition for the buffet, they can cook mostly anything and taste delicious. The sushi part also has a lot of options and all plates always filled with ready to eat sushi. Lunch and dinner menus are different, more premium food are available during dinner time, like coconut shrimps, seafoods from crawfish - crabs - muscles - oysters also steaks and prime ribs. Never had those last western food, as always looked overcooked at some point. But the most popular is the ice creams selection, mostly are Hersheys in single serving. All ice cream must be consumed dine-in. Overall this is a recommended buffet place, with wide selection of salads - western foods - asian foods - fries - fruits and desserts! #flaminggrillandbuffet #frederickmd #preservefootprints

The building is large with plenty of parking. It has a medieval-vibe from the outside, although there's a plaque inside the front door saying the building was built in 2000. Once inside, it's fairly dark and continues with the old-mansion type atmosphere. There are lots of items hanging from the walls, older portrait photos, chandeliers, etc. very cool space. We were told at the front desk to go upstairs for the brunch (there is an elevator!). Once upstairs, we were greeted and sat in a corner table for two. The placement of the table was perfect, as there were a lot of families there for brunch, and I felt like we were being given an opportunity for more quiet. I noticed that the layout of the room placed tables for two and other smaller tables toward the outside. The server greeted us warmly and explained where things were and invited us to get started. The food: outstanding. The crab dip was thick from cheese and full of crab. The Maryland crab soup (didn't try the cream one) was full of crab and veggies, and the broth was flavorful. The salad was fresh, the chicken and salmon were both well prepared and delicious and the crab omelette was full from crab. There's also the traditional breads, eggs, potatoes, bacon and sausage. They all looked good, but I didn't take them seriously with all the other foods there. I went to get prime rib snd was given a huge piece freshly sliced. Outstanding. The outside was seasoned perfectly and the inside was moist and flavorful. You can get creamy horseradish, horseradish alone and au jus, which you serve yourself. The desserts included some pies (including key lime), cooked apples, brownies and there's fresh fruit at the salad bar. Service: Outstanding. Our server kept our water glasses, iced tea snd coffee filled and took our plates promptly. Bloody Mary - was $1 and I think it's a darn good Bloody Mary. Not fancy, but tasty. We came here looking for a new place to go for buffet brunch. We live over a half hour away, but do plan to come back for other occasions. It's a nice atmosphere with a very classy vibe, but good for families. Everybody seemed to be having a good time and enjoying themselves. And the service was excellent. The brunch ain't cheap (it's $46.95 per person), but there's outstanding prime rib, a real crab dip and two types of legit crab soups, along with other entrees (the salmon was so soft and flavorful - I was jealous because I can never get mine with such great texture), as well as traditional breakfast fare and a salad bar. Worth a visit. The restaurant's regular menu looks pricy, and some of the items on the regular menu are available on the buffet (prime rib, crab dip, crab soups, the chicken and the salmon).

Chicken fingers covered in deli ham smothered in gooey cheese with asparagus on top. Sounds good maybe if the chicken were prepared somewhat specially and not tough. Deli ham? You're kidding right? And the cheese; maybe it was American cheese spread or cheese whip. But the asparagus was nicely done. And it came with a twice baked potato and veggies that I would rate good. But the bad out weights the good. Preceding this was a forgettable salad of iceberg lettuce, carrots, and croutons. The best part of the meal were the rolls and butter and the water. I won't be back.

The menu is filled with lots of varied choices, including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai dishes. And to top it all off, the cost of this delicious food is VERY reasonable. I had enough to take home left after consuming enough to be satisfied. I recommend that you make Modern Asia your "go-to" Asian restaurant.

SU ordered Kung Pao Shrimp, her "go-to" and every Asian restaurant, and compares each one to China Garden's version. Her verdict: Modern Asia's was "OK", and she told me I could eat the leftovers for my lunch. I did. My verdict was the same: OK, but nothing to write home to Mother about. (My comparison, BTW, is to a restaurant we enjoyed in Ithaca New York that made Kung Pao with peppers that would flay your face from the inside if you dared to eat one. Modern Asia's didn't even tickle, making it a let down). I ordered Seafood Combination Chinese Yellow Curry, a new dish for me. It was yummy. Described as one-pepper spicy on the menu, it had less heat than the Kung Pao, but the curry sauce had layers of flavor. It featured shrimp, scallops, and calmari plus a wonderful mix of peppers, onions, and other veg. All were nicely (crisply) cooked, even taking into account the Door Dash delivery time. I really enjoyed it. Next time I may ask for a bit more heat, but as it is, I hoovered up every morsel. Try it - you'll like it!

We ordered a bit of everything from the standard and kids' menus. Our favorites were the pulled pork tacos, the flounder sandwich (my personal favorite), and the from-scratch mac and cheese. I would eat a pint of that mac and cheese if I could. A note, however, 1/3 of the kids found the addition of cracked pepper in the mac and cheese "too spicy." We opted to sit outside since we had our dog with us. The server was very friendly, with great service and they are very dog friendly and had water bowls outside for them. I am from Eastern NC, so I have a pretty good idea of bbq and BC staples. I decided to try the flounder rather than the bbq this time. The founder was disappointing. It was a bit on the bland side and the batter is a little confusing. I was expecting a cornmeal style batter or similar, but got something different. The fish itself had potential to be very good. The beans also left a lot to be desired, just lacked flavor and taste. The business looks like they do a lot of catering as opposed to dining (possible a lot of to go orders, too).

TLDR: tired place, tired food, tired service…read more.. Favorite Oldest Grand Daughter (FOGD) was working yesterday so missed family Thanksgiving. I took her out for lunch to help make up for the missed turkey (take that any way you want, sports fans). I gave her a choice of sushi or Indian buffet; she chose Taj Mahal. Taj has been around for many years but somehow I've missed it. I heard it has a nice buffet (a decent value for $19 at lunch). When we arrived there were very few patrons so server said we had our pick of seats. We sat at a booth near the bar, near the buffet. Seats were ratty but in better shape than other booths. We grabbed plates at the bar and went for food - which was really tired and dried out even though it was was well before lunchtime ended. Server said she would bring pans of rice, butter chicken, saag, and naan so we tried what was available. Samosas were cold inside but filling was tasty; chickpeas that came with it were really good but again, cold. Onion pakoras were great, but some chutneys would have been nice. Goat curry was tasty, dry-spiced potatoes were good and had enough heat to make them interesting, but everything else was middle-of-then-road. When the fresh dishes came out we replaced out plates and tried again. Butter chicken and saag were really, really good, rice was really crunchy (undercooked) and quickly dried out under the warming lamps, and naan was good when very fresh but quickly got crunchy. We did not go back for more and skipped the salad/dessert choices. Frederick has a bunch of really good Indian (and Pakistani and Afghani) restaurants (mmmmm, Mint Room, Tulip Grill, and Mayako) so I would not put Taj Mahal anywhere the top of my list of similar places.
