This is a great restaurant that recently opened in New Haven serving authentic Chinese food that is flavorful and filling. The dining room's ambiance is tasteful while the vibe is casual. The service was prompt, and the waiter started off by helping me open my lychee flavored Japanese soda, which is served in a glass bottle with a top that is unlike American sodas. The soda tasted fermented and healthier than the usual sodas one is used to in the U.S. The food arrived at the table quickly, and everything was good. The cumin beef plate came first, and I could really get the aroma of cumin. The same was true for the ribeye pot in pumpkin sauce. Nothing was overly salty or spicy. The General Tso's Chicken was a little sweet for my taste, but then it's supposed to be sweet, so no complaints. I even ordered a Kung Pao Chicken to go, and the order didn't take long. The people across from us were eating the dry pot, and it looked delicious. I'll have to order it next time. The restaurant started filling up as we ate. It seems like it's already enjoying some popularity for those who appreciate genuine, high quality Chinese cuisine. By their way, the price is reasonable. Visited the new Chef Jiang locating in New Haven last night and was quite impressed. The atmosphere is stunning, almost every table was full (on a Wednesday night) and most of all- food was really good. One important recommendation is to order the BREAD! It was one of my favorite items! The dipping sauce is amazing! Also the stir fried niuhe was another favorite. General Tso's chicken was a great option if you're ordering from the American menu. The crispy cucumbers were another excellent choice! Beef Mongolian was very flavorful and a favorite among the the table. And a fun addition to the evening, the large tables in the middle have a huge lazy susan! Making sharing fun and easy! read more

After hearing great things about the Farmington location, I was excited to try Chef Jiang in New Haven. The inside of the restaurant is actually quite nice, if you ignore the poorly constructed booths against the wall. We were a party of two and ordered the dumplings, roasted duck, fried rice, and braised pork. Our order was taken at the same time as another party of two right next to us. Both the fried rice and the pork came out within five minutes. The roasted duck came out an hour later and after tasting the long awaited duck, it was ice cold. We informed our waitress about this and she argued with us that the roast duck was supposed to be cold. Scoffed at us and had an unpleasant attitude. Not to mention the fact that they also forgot about our dumplings. It was evident that the waitstaff forgot about our food. The party next to us got all of their food and paid before our duck came out. We didn't even get a sorry, only a poor attitude. read more

My family and I used to drive 40 min to their Farmington location, I'm so happy that they opened one in New Haven. Chef Jiang never disappoints. Their food is amazing, probably the most authentic Chinese food you can find in Connecticut. The space is beautifully decorated. Service is a little slow, but they still deserve a 5 star from me. We are so excited about a new Szechuan place in New Haven! On a Saturday evening we had to wait 30 minutes for a table (shameless plug for Whale Tea nearby, a great place to wait) The service and ambiance were great - not too loud, fast and friendly service. Here are the food reviews: Chongqing style fried chicken: there was seemingly nothing Szechuan about this chicken. Lots of breading and no flavor aside from "fried" even though they were mixed with dried chilis. I encountered a single szechuan peppercorn. Beef & Tripe in chili oil: excellent! Lots of chili oil, lots of spice, lots of beef. 10/10 Fresh tilapia with pickled veggies: also pretty bland, not sour as I expected with the pickled mustard greens. I felt like the fish was undercooked. Eggplant and string bean: surprisingly flavorful, but it may have just been really salty. Not much "Szechuan" flair. Cumin lamb: Excellent flavor. 10/10 Overall we chose some typically excellent dishes that other Szechuan restaurants SLAY but Chef Jiang missed the mark. Fried szechuan chicken should be a home run every time but we didn't even finish it I'll give benefit of the doubt and blame new-restaurant-struggles and we will try again. Good place to try out in New Haven downtown near by Yale campus. . They have dedicated free parking lot for their customers at the back of the restaurant. It can fits at least 10 cars. Menu are diverse. Numerous Spicy and non-spicy options . Tastes are genuine as expected. Table setting and decorations are up scale as each table is separated from others so you can enjoy some privacy during dinning. Staffs are generally friendly. Never again. They have a completely disorganized wait time system. Told us it would take 35-45 minutes to be seated and took our name. Checked back at 45 minutes and said they'd call us. Checked back at 60 minutes and said they tried to call us but it didn't go through. Seated us 10 minutes later. After waiting over an hour to be seated, server came by to tell us they wouldn't be putting in any orders for 20 minutes because it was busy. No offer of any drinks or anything at all to make up for the inconvenience. Very unprofessional and poor customer service. Went to try the soup dumplings one evening, place was busy and I was a walking as a single. They were able to accommodate me and ordered the pork soup dumplings and chef Jiang's fried rice. Received the rice which was fabulous... waited for the dumplings for a while and finally asked the server if they were coming and he was surprised they were not served. He said it will be 10 minutes more as the order was not made in the system. I declined and asked for a check. We ate here and thought this place was going to be great. It was the opposite. The food was ok, but the service was horrible. We received our dinner first and the appetizers last. The waitress did not understand English we had to help her input the correct items in her tablet. The soup dumpling had no soup. We got a plastic lid as a plate and plastic little cups as sake cups. Got takeout both times and have LOVED the salt and pepper chicken, duck (even for takeout everything was packed well), wontons in chili oil, crab and pork soup dumplings, shrimp fried rice, and beef and tripe in chili oil (strong on the peppercorns!)
