Excellent Price/Value ratio!

This Chef Chu's is fantastic! I only wish I wasn't solo or I would have for sure tried their Peking Duck, as it comes with a very strong reputation. The restaurant, from the moment I entered, carried that all familiar wonderful aroma that immediately places me right back to some of my favorite restaurants, throughout my travels to China and Taiwan. The place is beautiful, spacious and very busy. Clean white linen tablecloths on each table. I actually drove 600 miles here and back, on Friday, just for a delicious Friday lunch and some tasty pork buns. I ordered the lunch special, which came with a well-portioned serving of Kung Pao Prawns, a decent sized cup of Hot & Sour soup, a bowl of steamed rice, and a pot of hot tea. Everything exceeded my expectation. I was seated in a small table near the bar and the host stand. While sitting there, I had the opportunity to meet Manager Larry Chu Jr., son of Chef Larry Chu Sr., the founder. Larry is super friendly and is totally on top of everything going on in the place. I'll just say he runs a very tight ship. I was also fortunate enough to meet Chef Chu, as he came by my table and sat with me as we discussed his amazing life's journey. Both Larry's are truly special owners and a perfect example of what makes our country so special. I highly recommend this already top-rated restaurant to anyone looking for the very best Chinese food within the Bay Area.

Braised Triple Mushrooms / 燴三菇

5 of us came here for dinner on a Sunday around 6:30pm to check out the hype. I used to come here for lunch/dinner with my co-workers while I was working in the area, but that was more than 10 years ago. They were very busy but not completely full. Parking was easy as they had two parking lots. The inside decoration had not changed at all. It had the very classic American Chinese restaurant vibe. The hype was real and there's a whole wall full of celebrity pictures downstairs. The food quality and taste was much better than we expected. Portion size wasn't huge, but price was still reasonable, considering it's expensive everywhere. We ordered 4 dishes and jasmine rice. The Rainbow Fish Fillets weren't fishy at all; there were a good amount of fish, and the vegetables were fresh. I liked that the sauce was light and the dish was seasoned well. The Pan-Seared Black Pepper Steak was another scrumptious dish, and the beef was tender. The Braised Triple Mushrooms had shiitake, button, straw mushrooms, snow peas and carrots in a delicious oyster sauce. The only dish I didn't really care for was the General Chicken. While their unique sauce was quite tasty, the chicken was too dry for me, and there was quite a bit of batter. Overall, it's a great meal catching up with friends. The servers were friendly and kept refilling our tea/water; we didn't feel rushed to leave.

Wow I continue to love how this restaurant operates! From the moment you enter and can see the chefs and the giant woks, to seeing Chef Chu himself walking around talking to locals, the white tablecloths and calming music, to the fantastic service and delicious food. It is quite an experience!

Great Chinese eats in the area. It's great for large groups and food is good. We came here multiple times and the shrimp lettuce cups and the kungpao chicken are our go to. The front head of the house lady is very kind and accommodated us many times.

No wait for my party of 5 on a Sunday evening. Service was very efficient and dishes came promptly. We shared Chef Chu's famous chicken salad, minced chicken in lettuce cups, boneless crisp aromatic duck, Sichuan-style string beans, pan-seared black pepper steak, and steamed Chilean sea bass with black bean sauce. Everything was pretty good. My favorites were the boneless crisp aromatic duck which was very flavorful, minced chicken in lettuce cups, and steamed Chilean sea bass with black bean sauce which was super tender. We thought the pan-seared black pepper steak would be thinner slices but they were large chunks. Pretty tender though. The chicken salad and string beans were just ok for me compared to the other dishes. Overall not super authentic but still a tasty meal and fun to eat here given the hype and history of the restaurant.

This place is a banger and always popping so you can expect lines. The food here is perfect everything from the soup to salad to the meat dishes are all really delicious. The only star missing is for the high prices but hey it's the bay area!! Lovely food.

Was craving American Chinese food and decided to finally try John Chu's family restaurant. Very classic American Chinese food, but slightly elevated. The inside is bright and roomy. Service was very good. Always checking on us to see what we need and removed empty dishes. We didn't get to see but my friend said they have a banquet hall upstairs and you can pre order roast duck. For the food, we tried a few classics, and I think the hot and sour soup is a must try. Parking was pretty easy. Lots of spots in the back. Also the restaurant is close to Trader Joe's and Safeway. Nice way to get groceries done after dinner.

Chef Chu's is an experience! I wanted to give the out-of-town friends a look at a Bay Area OG, one known for introducing Chinese American cuisine in the 1970s. They had an excellent time and loved meeting the celebrity chef who came around to a few tables at peak dining hours to shake hands and take photographs. He even let us know that the Beijing duck format will be changing to the thin pancakes. as opposed to the more filling steamed buns currently being served. Although there isn't anything especially groundbreaking or nouveau about the restaurant these days, it's a comforting classic that will always have a place in everyone's hearts.

3.5 Basic family style Chinese restaurant. They had lobster and Beijing duck so I'm not a hundo what region of food this is all supposed to be... In fact I think a lot of it was Americanized Chinese. The food wasn't anything super special but it was solid and nothing was bad. Apparently the chef/owner is pretty famous and the restaurant has had many famous visits over the years. They do have a full bar which is pretty uncommon for Chinese restaurants There is also a lunch special. I'd say dishes are basically 20$ which isn't cheap. Overall solid American Chinese spot that is maybe more akin to pf Chang's but with more authenticity and some authentic staples. Execution is solid but wouldn't make a detour or anything to try again

Chef Chu started back in 1970 and still continues to serve amazing Chinese food! Each dish that we ordered had a different flavor and sauce with it. My favorites were - wonton in peanut sauce, kung pao chicken, prawns in hot garlic sauce and clay pot basil chicken. We were upstairs where all the large parties with lazy Suzy tables were there - the waiter was amazing kept being super efficient and taking orders without writing anything down! Wow he seemed in his 60 to 70 age group - amazing memory :) We had a birthday and they got a mango serbet with a candle - very sweet.

Gluten free options available
Farhana M.

Ordered Food to go on a Friday evening. Super busy inside, made me almost walk out. My partner and I tried to see what dish can be made gluten free and I was told that none of the beef dishes can be done. That was disappointing but I pivoted to chicken sauté with broccoli. This dish was alright, the broccoli had more flavor than the chicken. My partner can eat gluten so he got the crispy szechuan beef. He said this dish isn't authentic, as its normally not supposed to be breaded.

Finally tried this place at lunch with a colleague. I am prefacing this by saying we only tried a few dishes so will return to try more. Service here is outstanding. We were sat quickly without a reservation during the week and every person working was attentive and helpful. Our waters were refilled frequently, tea was checked to ensure we had plenty and was still warm, hostess brought us our drinks so we were happy there. The ambiance was busy and active. A bit loud but tables were quite full. We ordered the potstickers as a starter. They were nice big and juicy. I ordered the lemon chicken and white rice for lunch. The lemon chicken was dry and the sauce didn't taste like traditional lemon sauces I've had. The rice was a bit hard but edible. My partner had a chicken salad and she seemed to enjoy it. While I was disappointed in my selection hoping it was a one off. They also do not have fried rice which is my favorite. Overall good restaurant just need to fine tune their rice and lemon chicken.

Kurtis S.

Came here after helping some friends move so we had worked up an appetite. We called ahead to set a reservation and I would highly recommend doing so as they were quite busy. When we showed up. We were quickly greeted and sat down and they brought some tea for us to try. All of our food came out quickly and was prepared very well. We liked the many of the options were easily shareable. The restaurant has a good ambience, albeit on the louder side. Side so if you want to come here for a quiet evening to set your expectations. We would definitely come back here again to try more of their food as all of their dishes were very yummy!

Do they sell gift cards?

Yes, I believe they do!

You call them on the phone and request a reservation. Their phone number is 650-948-2696.

MSG is in many of the sauces and ingredients they used. Are you asking if they add more ?

Open for dining in? Still only for lunch! Only take out for dinner

Yes open for lunch, and take out for dinner. And the quality and flavor of CC's food is the best I have sampled in 40 years of trying different Chinese Restaurants in the SF Bay area.

Any idea when Chef Chu's is opening the restaurant?

Chef Chu's is a family business so they are being very cautious opening the restaurant for indoor dining. I would expect it will be real soon since we are now in yellow tier.

Are they open for indoor dining?

Not yet!

Do they use MSG in their food?

Not to my knowledge.

However, it did have an intimate vibe. This joint's specialty (I assumed) was a menu full of house drinks. Sadly, I did not recognize any of them. I went with "You Should Try It" and it was fine. I could not describe what it tasted like, other than it was a mixed drink. My buddy ordered a "Vesper" but it didn't seem like the one Daniel Craig ordered in "Casino Royale". I loved the sprouts, but only because I have a palate for tangy, it was heavy on the apple cider. The edamame cakes were freakin fire! I've never had anything like that in my life--a revelation--the best version and tastiest of edamame ever! Their toffee bread pudding my husband loved. The chicory salad not memorable and dressing barely noticeable (I brought it home and gussied it up). The delicate squash a disaster and shockingly bad, inedible to the point we had to send it back. They had literally dumped raw curry powder onto it and I guess hoped it would be flavorful or be curried squash? It was acrid and awfully bitter. Was this a mistake or how they do it? I'm Indian and know raw curry powder when I taste it. The executive chef needs to pay attention to this. The best thing about our meal: our server, Ruben, was awesome: friendly, down to earth, attentive and absolutely on the ball, apologizing for the squash (despite that he did not cook it :-) The prices are reasonable, and would be even better were the dishes more sparkling. The portions a bit on the smaller side. Parking we snagged free, but it was late, so not sure how it would be during peak times.
