Salt and Pepper with BBQ sauce on it from prior customers (we wiped off the top)
Cory S.

My friends and I were looking for some food to grab for an early dinner near where we were staying, and we came across a Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen. Having never actually gone to one but having seen them at home previously, we thought we'd give it a try, especially with attractive dishes and good prices. We stopped by around 5 PM for an early dinner on a Monday evening. The service itself was very good as was the food, though the cleanliness of the restaurant, the seating area, the silverware, and condiments (including salt and pepper) were abysmal. I would have rated the service and food at 4 but the cleanliness at a 1; I gave an average rating of 3. While I can see some of what we experienced being a reason to walk away, we didn't notice have of this until after we ordered food, and again, the service and food itself were very good. We had no wait to be seated nor did we need a reservation. There is a waitlist feature on their website (https://www.cheddars.com/wait-list). Our server was very helpful and checked on us regularly. Early after we ordered food, a plate of complimentary buttered croissants arrived which were delicious! I think that may have been the highlight of my meal. As the food is marketed as "homestyle comfort food," I decided to order the top sirloin steak (8 oz) with two side choices. I chose broccoli for one side and paid for the second side to be upgraded to a side Caesar salad. The broccoli was well-seasoned, the steak was juicy and tasty, and the salad was as good as any side Caesar. Did I mention I loved the buttered croissants!? We unfortunately had one cleanliness issue after another. There was a dirty fork until my seat. The salt and pepper shakers were covered with barbecue sauce (which we wiped off the tops) but we didn't bother cleaning the sides. We were given clean silverware wrapped in a napkin but one of our silverware sets had crusty dirt leftover from other diners. We asked for a replacement of that. We get that these things happen but this seemed like a consistent issue at this restaurant. You can join the Cheddar's eClub for member-only offers, scratch cooking tips, and more by going to https://www.cheddars.com/customer-service/join-eclub. Just for signing up, you'll also receive free chips and homemade queso. You also receive a special birthday treat on your birthday. All in all, the prices are great, the food is great, the promotions are good, and the service is good. But I may think twice before dining at this location due to the cleanliness issues we experienced.

Meatloaf

The food is amazing here and the fries are good and the Shrimp is amazing. The staff is nice

Chicken pot pie and coleslaw
Jason Z.

Temperatures are dropping so decided to go for a chicken pot pie. The server was very friendly and attentive. Food came out quickly. I ordered coleslaw for my side to accompany my chicken pot pie. Normally the chicken pot pie is very good but today was not that day. Not sure what happened but it wasn't as good as it usually is. Have been coming here for years. Normally great food but. Might've just been an off day.

Came in for dinner today since I haven't been here in a while and it was definitely a great experience for me the steak was cooked perfectly medium well the green beans and broccoli was delicious and the unsweetened tea tasted fresh my server Issac was awesome he always made sure my drinks were full and made sure to repeat my order back to me and he was moving around quickly because they were busy but he was busting his ass off One of the best experiences I've had 10/10 must try again

Country Fried Chicken

Very obviously one of my favorite restaurants in this area. We come here often for lunch and dinner and the service is always good and fast. The only thing I wish they could improve is there there have been a few times when they are out of certain foods/ side dishes. Other than that, I really enjoying eating here!

I guess they NEVER clean the tables, we were sitting for 21 minutes. The food was good, but the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE....
Maria S.

WORST customer service. Sat for 21 minutes until we got tired of waiting so we had to call a manager. The edge of the table was so dirty FULLLLLLL of crumbs.

Chicken Tender Platter (No. 8 Special)
Kylie N.

Came here around 4 pm with a group of three and was seated immediately. They were very accommodating consider in we wanted a table for my friends grandmother. The service was quick and the portion size of the food was surprisingly big. I got myself the New Orleans pasta and the other two people I was with got the chicken tenders platter. Our food was either plain or very salty, but it could just be an off day. I would come back if I were in town again.

We were seated right away, we chose the chef's table because we had already eaten dinner at home, but just wanted to go out for a stroll around the pearl and grab some dessert. We ordered the lemon blueberry Panna cotta and not only is it delicious but it's also beautiful! It looks like a work of art. I ordered one of their craft beers and we got some french fries on the side just to offset the sweet. Definitely a great dessert if you are not wanting something too sweet or two filling. It has been over 10 years since I have been here to eat, but being there reminded me how much I loved the last meal I had here so I am eager to go back for lunch or dinner!

We also had the snapper throats and loved them. The aioli was a great sauce with them. I had the gulf catch of the day, which was grouper, and it was so good. Great seasoning, perfectly flaky and moist, a nice crust on the outside. With that we had some jalapeno corn bread which was also delicious. Not too dry at all. I was hoping for it to be spicy but it was not. For dessert, I gad panna cotta and it was a great ending. Not too sweet, but the berries made up for that. The lavender meringue bites had a great crunch. Our server (Maya) was excellent. She was so friendly and helpful. Finally, the decor is unmatched anywhere. It used to be a brewery and they kept the old pipes and valves, which look very cool. It has a great vibe. I highly recommend. Without the need to, I'll mention anyway that it's not cheap. But it's worth it.

For a starter we shared the cornbread with another couple and it was plenty for 4 people. If you are from out of town and looking for some Texas-shaped vittles or just want something substantial to stretch your meal I recommend it! Very tasty and filling. For my main I had the scallops with creamed corn risotto. It was a dainty portion but the flavors were nice. My husband had the short rib tagliatelle which he loved. It was very rich and filling. We had the buttermilk pie again for dessert and this time it tasted sweeter than I remembered. It was good but we couldn't finish it. Idk if it was my tastebuds or if it was different. Anyways still a great meal overall and we will be back!

Other than that, the food was average to, not good I made the mistake of going to this tourist spot, inside of the la mansion hotel, $168 later, I can truly say that I would never recommend this restaurant!

I didn't need extra fat from avocado after the corn cakes since it doesn't add much flavor to the dish. The corn cakes are good and I will order again but not as good as some other cornbread. It came with 2 cakes. One was undercooked and one has a crispy crust. The undercooked one was my favorite. It is more moist with soft in the middle. Tuna Al Pastor has a kick but nothing special. Tres Leches was beautiful. 4/5. I like the fresh fruits to cut down the sweetness. The cake was a bit in the dense side. The icing on top was thick. I wish it was a fluffy whip cream to cut down from all the sweetness. Overall it's still a better tres leches than other places in the area.

The cabbage was somewhat spicy, the cornbread muffin was a half muffin, the muffin did not fill up the cupcake muffin wrapper. But the fried catfish, fried chicken wings and yams were on point, I would order the catfish and chicken wing plate to go anyday! The peach cobbler was very sweet. My daughter ordered meatloaf, a pork chop plate, Mac & cheese, collard greens, cornbread muffin, a tropical punch beverage and banana pudding which I felt the pudding was watered down vs. being thick. She asked for medium cooked pork chops and one pork chop was medium and one pork chop was over cooked. She notified the cashier and he stated they both were cooked at temp the same time. The collard greens were spicy and the Mac & cheese were watered down. I had to go to the restroom. This was the worst restroom in any restaurant I have ever used. First, there was no light on, I had to ask for light and one of the employees turned on the light. Secondly, there was an awful hole in the top right corner ceiling, I was afraid to use the restroom for fear of some bug crawling in through the ceiling hole. Third, there was also a hole in the wall visible behind the toilet tank top, again I was afraid to set down on the toilet and the whole bathroom decor was unappealing. When other patrons described this establishment as as "HOLE IN THE WALL" they were absolutely correct. Don't forget about the hole in the ceiling! Entering into the building, the walls and ceiling were black, making the atmosphere sad. There was also a small bar to the left of the dining area. But the kicker for me was, our two meals, two beverages, and two desserts cost $61!!! As many Soul Food Restaurant I have eaten in with my daughter for two people, I have never been charged so much for two soulfood meals with two beverages and two desserts. It is the perfect stop after showing friends and family the Alamo and the River Walk before heading back home. Just be prepared for a line because every time we have gone, there is usually one. It moves, but it is definitely part of the experience. Our go to items are always the lip smacking brisket. We order a pound of regular and a quarter pound of lean. Both are tender and flavorful. The ribs and sausage are also solid choices. For sides, we rotate between the well seasoned green beans, mac and cheese, beans and okra. All of them are excellent and you really cannot go wrong. Side note. I am not a fan of their corn. I prefer corn that leans sweet rather than spicy, so it is not my favorite. Next time I go, I already know what I want to try. Either the Brisket Sandy or the Brisket Grilled Cheese. Both look incredible. I recently visited The Pigpen with some friends to watch a soccer game. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, with plenty of TV screens all over the restaurant so you don't miss your favorite game. Their outdoor area has a really nice size playground for the little ones, and they have numerous fans and shaded spots all over to keep you cool as much as possible. They have a full bar with anything you can imagine, and plenty of non-alocholic options for those of us who don't drink. We weren't super hungry so I decided to just order a few items from their menu that we could snack on. Their pretzel was probably the best pretzel we've ever had (like ever, I am not kidding). The bread was super soft and it was actually semi-sweet which blended perfectly with the salt on top. Then I order their chicken wings and let me tell you, those wings were fire. I have no idea how they season them, but they taste heavenly. I also order a quesadilla with fries for my kid, and he devoured it in seconds. I got to try his fries and they were equally delicious. Frankly, I was expecting your regular bar food, but I was so wrong. One last thing, please keep in mind that since they are a bar, kids are not allowed after 9pm. Also, their parking is pretty small but there's plenty of street parking available around this area.

It is advertised as family karaoke. The bar has a sign stating that there are no minors after 9pm allowed. The families all seem to know each other. It is almost cult-like. A lot of the kids sang and it was cute. By 9:15pm, all the kids and their families were gone. About six of our adults were left. Mondo bizarro. I got to sing four songs so I'm not complaining. I did remark to one of the remaining adults that this was cult-like. He said yes, an Alamo Heights cult. Ahhhh... Creepy, but fun. My Pacificos were $7 each, a Coke was $2.77. Food truck food is offered. Lots of choices for nibbles. Give them a try.
