Our server was not attentive whatsoever. Our drinks were brought out watered down after 20 minutes when I asked her for them. The manager made me a new drink and was very rude about how personally made a new one. The second drink was way better. Our server then forgot to ring in our food and 3 tables that got there after us received their food before us. When we finally got our food it was gross, tasted bland, and was not good at all. So we didn't even eat it. We had to get the manager again and he comped it off for us and all we paid for was the drinks however it was terrible service and food quality. Full disclosure, we did not eat here - but the one star is justified. Went to this location because of a gift card. We're told there will be a 10-15 minute wait. Totally fair. Went to the bar to have a drink. Drinks were ok, nothing special, but as soon as we told the bartwnbar we were waiting to be seated, nothing. Not asked if we wanted refils, no attempt tonwioe off the sticky countertop, full back to us for the 20 minutes we were at the bar. Buzzer goes off, we're led to a still dirty table. Hostess looks anoied and walks away. We're left standing awkardly, notice that many tables have not been cleared. Not just not wiped down, but stacks of dirty dishes and drink ware. Ok, maybe they were slammed, it happens. Two servers zipping around the section of 8 seated and 10(?) filthy tables. We decide to return to the host stand. The hostesses argue with each other that we had already been sat. We we're led back to the same (still not clean table) this hostess runs off quickly and returns with a cleaning rag. So we sit down. No menus. No silverware. No server. A few more minutes and I returned to the host stand to ask for menus. A table near us is complaining loudly that they haven't had silverware but their food had been delivered (and was incorrect). As their server helped them the other server picked up a small child to go and look at the restaurant's fish tank, which is lovely, but a good amount of time had passed without so much as a hello, we'll be with you soon. I went back to the host stand and asked them to send over a server. I got an eye roll and and , "um, yeah". Few more minutes. Still no server. No greeting, and the other table still has incorrect food. So, we decide to cut our losses and go (We had paid the bar tab and left the empty glasses there when we were originally told our table was ready). Not a great impression. As we were leaving I asked the hostess for a manager, was told they were busy. Not a great impression, no real desire to go back. While I sincerely hope this was just a bad day for the crew, other reviews seem to prove otherwise. Now a proud owner of an unusable gift card. Awesome read more

Where to begin. Table and menus were dirty. Service from the start was terrible. Server did not seem knowledgeable at all. Chicken tenders were cold. Had dinner here for the first time with my family on a Sunday evening. I had the salmon with bourbon glaze which was delicious. My husband had Key West chicken and shrimp which he said was only ok. My kids both had mac and cheese which was clearly homemade and also very good. I knocked the stars down though because the place was filthy. There was food and trash on the floor. Our salt and pepper shakers were sticky. The bathroom trash was overflowing. Also (and this is a minor point) there was no coloring menu for the kids. Pretty much every restaurant has crayons and some type of paper for kids to color on so I was really surprised when they had nothing. Although my food was good our experience was just ok. I went here for lunch today with my other half. We were greeted and sat down promptly. Our server kept calling my boyfriend 'boss' throughout the entire dining experience and it was weird. He would say, "can I get you a refill boss? how is everything boss? can i get you some dessert boss?" Was he playing a mean trick or what. We ordered the queso and chips as an appetizer. One thing that really irked me was the music. I know this is a family establishment, but please spare me with this adult contemporary shit. To be honest, my first ever visit recently was very mediocre. The food was ok, the environment was very casual, the price is fair, our waitress was nice, and we were freezing every 2 minutes when the A/C kicked on since we sitting directly in it's line of sight. We tried again, and the service was still abysmal. Management walked around making sure not to make eye contact with customers. The food was actually pretty good (the croissants are why I gave it another shot), but the service was terrible. We went in with a good attitude, thinking it couldn't possibly be as bad as we remember. We should have known better because when we arrived, the hostess gave us a head nod and a hand gesture instead of a welcome or a smile. We were seated at a dirty table. When the server finally came, she spent 5 minutes looking for a busser to clean it off, and finally did it herself. Using the spray bottle on the table, she managed to get half the spray on us...no apology. Our server never smiled; in fact, I didn't see one employee smiling at the customers, or each other. We did receive MOST of our meal in a timely manner. However, part of it did not come until 10 minutes later, in which case my entree was cold. We were not offered refills. We did not receive the check for quite awhile after asking. We actually anticipated that, so we asked for it when the rest of the meal arrived. Some people must have good experiences here, or very ****low standards****, because the place was very busy. As long as customers keep coming and accepting horrible service and atmosphere, I'm sure they don't care. Our group of six visited Cheddar's Café on a Friday night at 6:00. We usually eat out a bit later in the evening and I don't know why I didn't think about how busy it was going to be. The place was packed - inside AND out. I was meeting my parents who were visiting from out of state so we were "catching up" and I didn't really mind the hour-long wait. Once it was our turn for a table, we were all seated in a huge booth. Now ordinarily, I don't like to be part of a group sitting in a booth, but these things were HUGE! There was plenty of room for all of us, three on a side. Our server was a fantastic guy who treated us like we were his only table. We received great care and he was very good at giving us a good overview of the menu. I felt a bit sorry for him because my dad is a TALKER and really kept him at the table a lot longer than he probably should have been. Even though, while talking with our table we noticed he heard a concern at the adjoining table, and address their concern immediately. We started out ordering nachos and onion rings as our appetizers. The onion rings came with a creamy chipotle dipping sauce as well as ranch dressing. The chipotle sauce was really good. The rings were perfect and the serving was generous. The nachos were "okay", but not nearly as tasty as the rings. We also had BIG (and cheap, under 4.00) margaritas. My step mom and I had the chicken pot pie and it came with a side salad. I was expecting a puny little dab of lettuce, but the salad was actually rather large and came with a croissant covered in honey butter. Oh baby! Three people at our table ordered the fried catfish and all enjoyed their meal. Dad ordered the chicken tenders and received a plate overflowing with meat. Our portions were really big and all of us ended up taking at least half of our dinner home. I can attest to the pot pie AND catfish as great leftovers. All in all, Cheddar's Café DOES seem like a more upscale Applebee's kind of place, but the price is right and the food is good. I'd go again. read more

I'm currently working in advertising sales which led me to contact Cheddar's Corporate Office. I asked to speak with their Marketing Department to see if they were interested in local advertisement. They responded that Cheddar's does not advertise - they rely solely on word of mouth. After eating there, I completely understand why. What is so great about this place? My first experience at Cheddar's was less than stellar; the only saving grace was that I had good company with me. I've never waited tables but isn't it just plain common sense that when you are serving someone, you should never stick your arm across someone else's plate to either a) place water down or b) serve a hot plate?! It happened to me a handful of times. I'd take a drink of water and I'd see an outstretched arm RIGHT across my face to do either of the aforementioned items. Second snafu: I ordered soup and when I asked for a spoon, they looked at me like I had a third head. Seriously? Then serve the damn spoon ON the plate! That took another good five minutes. Third snafu: How does one restaurant run out of every kind of vegetable there is? Steamed broccoli, no go. Steamed vegetables, no go. Anything green, no go. Seriously? Fourth snafu: One of the girls in our group, they got her order wrong 3x...and the icing on the cake was that they messed up her check as well. Fifth snafu: The drinks were SO watery. Yuck. Oh, Cheddars...what a great place for fat, poor Americans to get fatter. Seriously, is there ANYTHING healthy at this place? Even the "healthy" stuff is covered in butter, oil or cheese. You can get some decent steamed veggies but that's about it. So, don't come here if you want to eat healthy. Do come here if you want tasty and cheap food, and lots of it...it is perfect for that! However, while the food is tasty, it's far from great, and the service has always been OK but not overly friendly...however, with prices so low, I cannot imagine their tips are very big. They run on quick turnover, and you can usually feel it. I think I agree with the previous poster who said most of the stuff here can easily be made at home for the same price, without the lines and of equal or better quality. Seriously, "baked spasagna"? Basically, that means taking spaghetti, cooking it to al dente and baking it with cheese and tomato sauce. I think I first made that at home when I was 9 years old. I've been to Cheddars a few times since they came to town. I recently took my family here to meet with my sister's family for a Saturday lunch. One thing we have learned is you need to get here early. For some reason, this place is always packed. We were seated right away and started in with a drink order and appetizers. We chose the potato skins and the spinach dip. I have to say that I find their spinach dip to be quite good (how hard is it to melt some cheese with some spinach?) but their chips are just so-so. I didn't try the potato skins, but they looked yummy and I certainly heard no complaints from the rest of the table. For entrees, my wife ordered a vegetable plate (yes, they do serve food here besides the artery-cloggers), I ordered a mushroom burger with fries, my nieces ordered chicken pastas, my sister had the catfish (looked good), and my brother ordered the epitome of Southern sandwiches: the Monte Cristo. The Monte Cristo sandwich is truly something to behold, and yet is hard to find north of the Mason-Dixie line. Cheddars does it the real way with a fried bread and not just some Texas toast. Needless to say, after this feast we were plenty full and did not even consider desserts. The service was excellent; the place was clean; the prices were reasonable; the food was good. A nice price break from the typical Johnson County restaurant. Hard to beat $3.50 drinks anytime. Had a Texas Sweet Tea which was very good. The price always helps the taste though. I also ordered the onion rings and was surprised when a huge stack came out a few minutes later. All for only $4! What really brings this place down in the service. First off, it was 8 on a Sunday night, not exactly the busiest time for JoCo. Second, my party was seated at a table in the bar area. The waiter seemed really put off that we weren't ordering any entrees. The only reason I even got onion rings was because of their $3.50 drinks. He also kept coming by and making sure we didn't want to order any food. No, we still don't want to eat & pay for an entire entree. We were a low maitenence table and really just needed our drinks/apps and maybe a refill of water at some point. I really enjoyed the prices at this places, but the staff needs to understand that not everyone comes in for a full meal in the bar area. Especially at 8 pm on a Sunday. My family and I currently visited Cheddar's for my birthday. We had a party of seven on Monday October 26th. We were promptly greeted at the door then sat down a couple minutes later. We arrived just before the dinner rush, around 5 o'clock. We waited about 10 minutes before anyone even came over to talk to us. Then once our drink order was taken, we waited another 10 minutes for half of our drinks to arrive (non-alcoholic came out first) then by the time another 10 minute period came by, we received our alcoholic drinks, but also by that time we needed some refills. The waitress didn't even ask even though most of our glasses were empty. We also ordered our appetizers, which took a very long while to get out. When they finally managed to get our apps out, the waitress managed to put her hair in one of our cheese dips, so we sent it back. Finally, once we put our order in it took another forever time to get out. I had ordered a bowl of the potato soup, which I never got. My brother ordered a side salad which he never received. The food was good, which is why I am giving this rating TWO STARS. At the end of the meal we also ordered two more sides of croissants, which we never received either. The manager just kept walking around, never apologized for the very poor service we received, even though I'm pretty sure she knew how the service was. Anyway, my family and I are in the service business as well. And we understand "off" days, which is the ONLY REASON we left a good tip. However, it wasn't a very enjoyable birthday. The service was beyond poor and we probably won't be back for a very long time. I have NO idea why this place was so busy for lunch when other (BETTER) places aren't nearly as packed. headed here with a friend for a last-minute lunch. she insisted that it was good. we came with our little ones, both in need of highchairs. I had to ask twice for a second chair (we arrived before our friends). our server had a trainee with us and the trainee was doing a better job at serving us (not sure what this says about their staff) I can't even remember what I ordered, but I think it was a grilled chicken sandwich. I just remember that it arrived with rice instead of fries (she claimed that she heard me wrong, which is understandable but she could have double checked) my little guy had a grilled cheese on really thick bread. he wasn't a fan, which does say something. yes it might be a little cheaper than other places with similar menus but it's not worth the savings. Again, I stand by my 5-star rating for this location - main reason being that service has always been superb for my family and I. For those of you who don't like to wait in line, here's my tip for minimizing wait times (besides the obvious choice of choosing times that avoid the lunch/dinner rushes): Our wait time was minimal for a Saturday night (literally only 10 minutes), probably because we aim to come here with small groupings. While it is possible to seat a large party, waiting time could take an hour or more, especially since they can't really move too many tables around. With that being said, I highly recommend you come here with a party small enough to fit at one table/booth. Then, you'll be happier with a shorter wait time. Food: My family and I usually order around the same things when we eat here. Appetizers we order range from the cheese/spinach dip to onion rings. Entrees we order range from the vegetable plate to the grilled catfish or salmon. And we've tried all of the sides. Out of the many, many visits here, I can say that the food we've been served has been so consistent (you can check out my previous reviews as I still stand by them in describing the food). There were a couple times when the side of homemade black beans have been a little extra watery than normal or the grilled fish a little extra saltier than normal, but other than those two visits out of many, our meals have remained for the most part quite consistent. Service: Service here is awesome. Our most recent server, Clarence, was very attentive, polite, and knowledgeable about the menu and how certain foods would be seasoned. I had to make specific requests due to my diet needs, and he was very helpful in answering my questions. We appreciate the fact that he never disappeared for long periods of time and checked in with us periodically. He brought us extra refills, napkins, lemons, etc. and it didn't take him a century to do it. So, thank you, Clarence, for helping to make our dinner go by seamless. When my wife ordered her meal she asked to make sure the green beans were served on a side plate as she can't eat with her food soaked in green bean juice. She was told they would be. They were not, and the waitress never came back to check which would have allowed a side plate and some salvaging of the meal. Also drinks were never refilled the entire time of the meal. I like the food at cheddars but if I'm being completely honest, this location is absolutely horrid. Their staff is almost always rude as well as super slow and lazy. Which really sucks because this is the only location nearby considering the other location is in blue springs. I'm in the service industry myself, and have been for many years. My fiancé and I even went in today for a quick lunch and were told to leave the bar for "having a 10 person maximum", but the second we walk away 3 more people show up and the little bartender girl didn't say anything. Crying children everywhere... Luckily, I was here with a family group, so I was anticipating a kid-friendly joint. I wasn't prepared though for the screaming child that was getting no punishment for being a ultra-brat at the booth across from us. I'm somewhat mystified by Cheddar's enormous success. It's right next to Mimi's in Oak Park Mall, which has always been a popular place, but Cheddar's has been jammed from the moment it opened a few months ago. I don't think there are other outlets in the metro, so I don't know where its word of mouth came from, but it's certainly been doing a roaring business. The first time I went, with friends, we ended up being seated in the bar and it was so noisy you couldn't talk across the booth table. The food was OK -- typical American comfort food in generous portions at very reasonable prices. That was actually a surprise, because when I had seen some advance publicity for the place it was billed as an upscale casual spot. But the menu and prices are in direct competition with Mimi's, which is quite reasonably priced. The second time I went (also with friends) we were a bit early so we got seated right away. Usually people are lined up holding those flashing beepers waiting to be seated. We sat in the main dining room and it was less obnoxiously noisy than the bar. Again, our food was fine, although nothing remarkable. Not a place I'd make a pilgrimage to, but if you happen to be at Oak Park Mall and are looking for American comfort food, Cheddar's is an OK option. But Mimi's may be less noisy and crowded! read more

This was my second visit to this Cheddars. The first time was with my wife and the food was awful. I usually give a restaurant two chances to impress me, so today was Cheddar's second chance. I was on a business lunch, so I wasn't paying (even better). I had the Original burger with cheese and a side of fries. The service was good - she smiled, came by a few times to make sure our waters were filled, smiled, and was pleasant. Although the waitress didn't ask, I would have ordered it med-well. The burger was cooked med- to med-well. Probably closer to the medium than med-well. There wasn't much taste to the burger itself, so if they add spice, it was very light. There were plenty of toppings (shredded lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles, and mustard). The bun crust was pretty hard, almost too much so. But it was okay. The fries were plain with no seasoning at all. They were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The food and check came at reasonable times as far as I remember, although we were discussing business so I didn't keep a stopwatch going. Overall, my impression was uninspired, bland food. Although it doesn't discourage me from returning to try something else, it did nothing to encourage me to go back and pay for a meal. read more

Where do I begin? To start off I went to this Cheddar's 3 times before today & promised never to return because the food was terrible. It's been five years so today I bit my tongue & went along for lunch, thinking maybe things have improved over time. Nope, this place is still TRASH. I ordered a medium well ribeye, they brought it out pink all through the middle. I asked if the "chef" (I use this term VERY mildly) could put it back on the grill, literally they browned the outside & brought it back still done medium to medium rare. The waiter brought it back, not the manager or the "chef". Next I asked two people if I could speak to the manager, manager never showed. They did take the steak off the bill. My sister ordered the lemon pepper chicken dinner, it was dry, like freeze dried DRY. I couldn't tell if they were potato chips or chicken breast. Terrible. The baked potato I know was microwaved for at least 20 mins. It tasted microwaved. No amount of butter or sour cream could make it edible. I'm giving them 1 star for the strawberry lemonade, it was delicious. I'm not going to even post about the service either, but the next person that mentions Cheddar's to me as a dining option will be unfriended & blocked from my life. read more

My wife's favorite restaurant. She worked at the Springfield location and it's still her favorite so that says a lot. The place is always exceptionally busy. Might I suggest arriving during their less crowded hours -- like when they're closed. Hay-oh! Comedy! Now, where was I? Right, it's crowded. Many folks try to ponder why, but I think it's as simple as comparing their food/price ratio. Their price is affordable, especially when compared to Applebee's or Chili's. Not by much, but by just enough where you notice it when you look at the menu. You see right away that the burger isn't $8-9. It's $5 and you can add fries for $1.29. For a family of four that translates to a decent savings. Most importantly, they don't pour a lot of food from a plastic bag before they cook it. They hand batter their kids corn dogs. This is terrible news if you're the fry cook, but good news if you're a kid and you don't care for a frozen corn dog from a box. Okay, kids probably can't REALLY tell a lot of difference, but it's the subtleties that count. I'm not a fan of waiting to eat at any mid-priced chain restaurant, and I'm not that much of a fan of waiting at Cheddar's either. I'll get there a little before the dinner rush, or I'll suffer through the wait if someone else really wants to eat there. At the end of the day though, it's pretty good food and reasonably priced. And don't forget the Cookie Monster. It's simple comfort food that they make fresh to remind you that maybe the wait wasn't so bad after all. read more

This was my first and last time here. I have no freaking idea what the 30 minute wait was for. Literally took our buzzer and said nothing and then led to table with no words. Maybe the onion rings warrant the one star. All food cold literally with four people. Everything took forever including the 25 mins for check. It was a crazy experience. If I could give a negative rating I would. We only went bc we had a gift card. read more
