After spending some of our Sunday afternoon locating some of the sites in Anne Kniggendorf's 'Secret Kansas City' book, we decided we wanted some BBQ and settled on Chat Bar. We haven't been in a while since we don't get out to the Westport area very often, but we've always enjoyed Char Bar and it didn't disappoint today. Ashley G provided just the right level of service. We were taking our time and she knew how to time her appearance. We shared 'The Holy Trinity' meat platter and chose Beans and upgraded to Sweet Potato Fries as our sides. We paired our meal with a Dunkel. We had hoped by sharing that we would leave room for the Warm Peach Bead Pudding, but we were too full. So... we need to get back soon to try it. We ordered Door Dash, because honestly we're both exhausted from moving our daughter to a new apartment. Dh ordered the brisket cheesesteak, and I had the CBGB burger. We also had a side of sweet potato fries. I admit that take out/carryout is never the same experience as dine in, however based on this singular experience, I'd never order again. The cheesesteak required au jus, as it was simply too dry. The same can be said for the CBGB burger. I understand that it was house ground smoked brisket, but we both added ketchup (a crime on brisket) and dunked in au jus just to be able to swallow it. We were just really disappointed. Decided to spend Valentine's Day at Char Bar for a late lunch. We've done brunch before and spent time in the patio for apps and sandwiches but decided to do a platter today! Of course we started with the cheesy hush puppies which are a must! Also liked the cornbread muffins but would've loved a little more salt in the batter, but the chive butter made up for it! My husband and I got the Holy Trinity platters either different sides and wow, the ribs and burnt ends might be our favorite in ALL of KC! Both very tender and juicy! Also loved the cheesy jalapeño corn and the servings were so generous that we'll have several meals on leftovers. Our server was excellent, friendly and very attentive. Our #1 fave BBQ in KC!! It's a perfect location in Westport with plenty of indoor & outdoor seating that has active games like corn hole & throwing football. I think they have the best burnt ends in the world. They're very flavorful full of meat and not too much fat. I decided to branch out & try a different side which was spicy coleslaw. My favorite BBQ place in KC. The vibe is immaculate, as you feel as if you are inside a BBQ. It was way too cold to go outside, but the fires and igloos looked cool. It also looks like a nice patio in the summer. I appreciate the free parking garage behind the restaurant too. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. An amazing BBQ spot with excellent food, plenty of options, and reasonable prices! We were recommended this spot by a friend who had been before and had recommended the CBGB burger. While we decided on other options the BBQ did not disappoint. The burnt ends melt in your mouth literally and were so tasty. The fried pickle was surprisingly delicious. The ribs were also good. You really can't go wrong here. The onion rings were also fried perfectly. Service was excellent. Our server was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to give us a refill without suffocating us. The ambiance is casual. Great for family seating or a day out with the guys or gals. What a huge and lively venue! We went on a Thursday evening for Birthday and they were packed with Husker fans. Only downside to that was, they had literally eaten all the brisket and pork! We will have to return to try what we wanted. The burnt ends plate was very good with the smashed potato (wow!) and potato salad. Good food and service in a really cool part of town. We had a variety of things between us and it was all good. I thought the sausage was the best of what we tried. It would have been five stars except that it was pretty pricey. We spent around $100 bucks despite drinking water and 2 of our party of 4 splitting a platter. I tried multiple barbecue places while in Kansas City, and this place was my second favorite, the competition is fierce in Kansas City though So being second place is not a bad thing! The meats all had a perfect amount of smoke flavor, and they were tender but not mushy. The side dishes were delicious as well! The ribs were tender and fell off the bone. The pulled pork was smoky and delicious. The sausage was good but the least favorite of the three. The coleslaw was creamy and still had some bite to it and wasn't overly tangy. The beans I like, but I prefer my baked beans to be on the sweeter side and these were more smoky and savory. Great place for locals and out of towners. I have always had a great time and everyone always enjoys their food. Service is fair to great depending on how busy they are. My most recent visit went well and the beers came out cold and food was hot. Quality is consistent every time. I love the inside. But the outside is such a vibe. My wife and I stopped by here today. It's been on our list for a long time. Our niece and nephew love it. I had read a lot of reviews about the chili and how many folks thought it was the best in town. It was pretty salty and lukewarm. The flavor was okay. It got better with a tablespoon of Tabasco. We also ordered the Pick 3 to share. We both enjoyed the brisket and pulled pork. The brisket is thick cut and lovely. Good smoke. A little dry. The pulled pork was perfect. No notes. The sausage was a little too moist, bland and fatty for me, but my wife loved it. She loved the beans, I thought they were just okay. We both loved the creamy Cole slaw. My band, RELAAY, was recently on tour and had a stop in Kansas City. A friend recommended Char Bar. We sat outside and loved the vibe of the lights and fire pit. The Whomp! Platter says it serves two to three people, so we ordered it, an additional side, and a small salad for the four of us to share. We were able to eat the leftovers for two days! Absolutely blown away by the service at my last visit to Char Bar! We stopped in on a rainy Tuesday as a large group without a reservation. To our surprise, there were already multiple large groups and entire sections of the restaurant were booked. The manager came over to talk to us and was able to find a space on the covered patio. Our server Sawyer was incredible. She took care of everything so quickly with multiple people ordering food and drinks on different tickets. Everything came quick and delicious, especially the cheesy hushpuppies and fried pickles. Crunchy, potato flavor throughout each bite and yet you can also taste the seasoning and the texture really brought it home. 10/10 by a longshot. The burnt ends were my favorite here, even better than Joe's, which is the place everyone in town raves about. 10/10 The fries were overly salty and sort of soggy not our favorite but not bad enough to dock a point. 4/10 The Mac and cheese was pretty good too. I would say like a 7/10. The chicken nuggets and the assortment of sauces... oh my god! We had such a great experience at Char Bar! I ordered the Whole Hog and the ribs were absolutely stellar - I'm talkin' fall-off-the-bone tender. Everything we tried was incredible and clearly made with care. As non-drinkers, my husband and I really appreciated the mocktail and NA options. We also thought it was nice that they had so many gluten-free options available for those with dietary needs. It's the little things like that that make a place stand out! Stopped by Char Bar after walking over from the AC Hotel in Westport with my pug, Mojo. They had outdoor seating with a great vibe--loved the little string lights outside. I definitely want to come back at night to enjoy it even more. I had the CBGB Burger and a Mango Cart pint. She had the Campfire Salmon and a peach lemonade. We also split a Caramelized Banana Parfait and liked it enough to grab another one to go. They brought Mojo a bowl of ice water right away, which I appreciated. The ribs were my fave as they had such a freat amokey flave to them and tender. The brisket was served with 2 nice slabs without much fat! Yea, fat adds to the flavor but too much fat is too much fat. Ends were very tender as well. Not a huge amount of rub flavor on the ends. Just all with their great smokey flavor. Who has the best BBQ is a continuous debate. North Carolina vs. Memphis vs. KC. I have to weigh in and say that KC BBQ specifically at Char Bar as the reigning champion. The rib tray was freaking amazing. I had a spiritual moment when I took my first bite of the rib. The sauce was sweet and peppery and the meat was juicy and tender. The onion rings were dangerously addictive and the baked pit beans were good. The spicy purple slaw was just ok. My friend has the burnt ends and I wanted to order some for myself they were so good. With so much BBQ in Kansas City, I can be overly critical at times because there are so many options when one is not as great as another. I really want to love Char Bar, but I never achieved the level of affection. The food is decent, but nothing on a level that creates a crazy fandom, and when you add in the price...it drives me to all the other options around the city that I do love and are nicer to my wallet. That doesn't mean it's not worth a try for yourself, just understand that you'll have great service from a friendly staff, but you're going to pay a bit more for BBQ that may not be as good as other BBQ you've had around Kansas City. The service is great! Our waitress was so sweet and attentive. We got the hush puppies as an appetizer. Delicious. Absolutely loved them. My husband got the fried chicken platter and loved it. We came in with a group of six and ordered the Whomp Platter--easily one of the best BBQ experiences I've had in Kansas City. Every meat on the board was smoked perfectly and served hot, with the right mix of bark, moisture, and flavor. The burnt ends and ribs were the standouts, but everything was solid. The sides didn't disappoint either. The mac and cheese, pit beans, and slaws were all on point. Portions were generous and nothing felt like filler.
