We love the Strouds food and come here frequently. We didn't know about this Twinkle pop up & arrived by chance. It is so cool! The ambiance and fun twist on the menu is a real treat. The Hubby has been wanting to come here for a long time but it never really interested me until I saw that they had a Christmas pop. I made a reservation and I'm glad I did. Our friends had previously been there and didn't realize how crowded it was going to be. We were promptly sat at our reservation time. My daughter had no idea about the pop up. She was pleasantly surprised by it all. As soon as you walk in you are hit with all things Christmas. Our server wasn't friendly at all and she seems quite annoyed by everything. We ordered a variety of food. My daughter said she liked her chicken tenders. They forgot to bring out her chicken noodle soup so she didn't get to try it. My husband ordered hot chocolate and a appetizer sampler and he liked it. The chicken was under seasoned for my taste but it was still good. The chocolate martini was good. Our friends liked there food. Overall if you're looking for one of those Instagramable places you are seeing all over your social media feed this place does not disappoint. This is a staple for good fried chicken. I tried the wings and they were actually good dry rub just to be safe. The chicken bites were a little too breaded for me so I'll pass on that next time. The green beans and potatoes were a little less than I remember, but the pepper gravy always makes the potatoes great. I was surprised they have a Father's Day special. A timeless slice of Kansas City. From the moment you walk in you're taken back to the inspiration of the family farm. While this is not the original location, the decor takes me back to my childhood memories. Today was a miss. Service was okay, but she simply had too many tables and not enough support. She forgot the ranch dressing for our spicy chicken bite appetizer. Once we waved her down, the chicken was cold and slightly overcooked. Sadly, we had the same experience with our meal. The chicken noodle soup was lukewarm. The fried chicken and sides were lukewarm, just meh. My wife felt her chicken leg was also overcooked and mushy. We brought most of it home. They're known for their fried chicken. But in my opinion, Stroud's serves the best fried pork chops in Kansas City. In the pork chop dinner you get 2 chops, green beans and your choice of 5 different potatoes. My favorite is their cottage fries. You also get a choice of salad, cole slaw or a bowl of their scratch made chicken noodle soup. In the winter, I've often just picked up a pint or two of the soup on my way home. While Stroud's chicken is pretty good, their fried pork chops are awesome. read more

Strouds never disappoints! We had a wonderful meal here. I used to eat at Strouds all the time in Wichita, but my wife had never been before. She was a huge fan of their chicken, green beans, and most definitely the cinnamon rolls. She also enjoyed the chicken noodle soup. Great deal. She had the one piece chicken dinner with a breast and could barely finish it. I had the two piece chicken dinner with a breast and a thigh, and ordered it spicy, which was amazing! We both enjoyed the potatoes and especially the gravy. They bring a nice portion of each to the table. Our server was Nancy and she was incredible! I would highly recommend that you ask for her when you visit this location because she will take excellent care of you. She had several tables including one with 10 people and we've never felt under served. She was very attentive and took great care of us. The restaurant is pretty cool inside as it is a little bit dated. It feels rustic and quaint, although it is very large. It was spotless. They take great care of this place, they obviously care about their people and the food quality is top shelf. Will be back many times I'm sure. read more

Had a 11:15 reservation for Thanksgiving. It was so busy the front entry doors hardly shut and it was really cold in the west half of the restaurant. Unfortunately the food bar/line started at the entry and ran through the coldest part of the restaurant. You had to ask to have the food pans replenished, some of the food was cold, the meating carving area was suspect, and I wonder if the mass of people in the restaurant exceeded city fire codes. read more

As we will never be returning to this establishment, I requested they provide additional training for their team and donate the gift card to a family in need. They are closing in 20 minutes and we still had not received our food. Obviously we left. When I called for a refund, they told me they couldn't do that today and to call back tomorrow. We received zero communication about the delay and what was supposed to be an easy holiday meal turned into wasting half of a day in a parking lot. Stroud's is a KC staple. If you like fried chicken and want to sit down to a meal, this is a good place to go. They have several locations now. I must say this this location is the best one when it came to taste. The service is good at them all. We came in after a Sunday of shopping. We best the rush of people gettingnoutnif church which was a blessing. We ordered gizzard and Biscuits as a starter. Their gizzard are always flavorful. I love them. I don't eat much bread anymore but hubs and the oldest kid said they were yummy. For our meals, we all had chicken..lol It was fried perfectly and seasoned. I can't stress enough how seasoning is important. The baby loved the mashed potatoes and I will admit they were good. Our waitstaff was great. She came to our table and checked on us and made sure.our glasses were full. She even made the baby laugh. If you're ever in the area, stop in for some good fried chicken. read more

Went for lunch today - had not been to this location before. Was very pleased. Service was good, chicken was great - tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The only thing that thew me abit was the size of the sides - HUGE. I was able to finish the mashed potatoes, but the green beans I had to get to go - I was stuffed. Food was delicious, as always. Our waitress, Nancy, was engaging, funny, and feisty. Cooks took a long time to prepare our food, though. It felt like 45 minute or so. The chicken soup I ordered and my date's salad helped pass the time. But still, 45 minutes felt like an eternity. Also, it was hot. They appear to have lost what made them exceptional. The chicken was dry, chicken livers over cooked, ordered hot French fry's without seasoning and when they arrived they were cold. When it was returned they were replaced with a plate of fry's that were overly seasoned. Advertised LARGE chicken wings were small and dry. On a good note the mashed potatoes and gravy were good but much smaller portions. Salad was smaller than before. No longer do you get crackers for the salads Rolls cost 2 for $1.00. They were cold. Not impressed and very disappointed. Strouds will no longer be the dinner choose for our families. Only item that was not reduced was the prices. Current meals are not worth the high costs read more

Where is the wonderful Strouds appearing in all the reviews I read? The service was slow with about a quarter full dining room. Salad with brown chunks in it. Oil that needed to be changed. Rancid is not a flavor. Gravy used to be my favorite. Stale oil taste as well. Shouldn't a cinnamon roll have cinnamon in it? Pretty much an awful lunch experience. read more

I decided to stop in for lunch since it's KCRW. $20 for 2 courses & I had leftovers for dinner. The dinner seems like a better option when it comes to value. The salad was pretty boring but honestly I kind of wanted that. I got the hamburger steak, which was pretty good. The mushroom gravy it came with went great with the blue cheese on top. I couldn't decide between that and rhe mac&cheese. I kind of wish I'd gotten the Mac instead. Their green beans are good and their mashed potatoes & gravy are some of the best out there. The cinnamon rolls are a must try, but not my favorite thing in the world. The service was not as good as past visits, but it wasn't bad. Just not as good as I'd hoped. We went for restaurant week and it was a great deal for a really filling meal. We shared the mac and cheese croquettes and they were fried perfectly and very much shareable. I would've like just a little bit of seasoning but that's just my preference. We then had the homemade chicken noodle soup and it was honestly the star of the whole meal. The broth had so much flavor and we loved the noodles. We each had the two piece chicken meal and I was already full by this point but I ate the chicken breast and it was moist unlike most fried breasts that are dried out. The green beans had great flavor and the mashed potatoes great texture. The cinnamon rolls were delicious without being overly sweet or decadent. Another reviewer commented about not being greeted and we did experience and witness this. We waited several minutes for someone to come to greet us and then were seated at the front and witnessed several people who were also left waiting. read more

Went to pick up an order that I called in and waited the 25 minutes, arrived and they had given it to somebody else. Never offered anything waited at the bar had a beer never offered to buy the beer got our food and went home, after another half hour. We made a reservation for Easter dinner on April 4th. Arriving, the person at the front asked someone to see if table 22 was ready. The person came back, said "no". They were told to seat us at table 11. This table was an extra table for overflow. The only one we saw. It was crooked, wobbly and very old. You could not keep a plate or cup on it, except closer to the middle, without it falling. We told our waiter, he shrugged. We asked him if we could have a different table, as there were open ones. He said they were reserved. I told him we had reservations and he shrugged again. Said no, for problem with reservations. Told him again, we had reservations. We asked for a refund and was told to wait. No one came for around 20 minutes. The manager asked what the issue was, we showed him. He said oh you don't like it? Said we weren't going to attempt to eat and was ridiculous for him to even question it. We were not apologized to, no one even acted like this was wrong. It was more like we were acting entitled. We left after asking for a refund, again. At the front, same thing again, rolled her eyes like we were demanding. Because we wanted a real table like every other person there? Not regulated to a staff table that was so crooked you couldn't put your plate in front of you. This was a special place for me. My deceased father loved it. I made a reservation for the OP location over a week in advance. At the time of making the reservation, I had the individual on the phone verify with a MANAGER that a family combo box could be purchased when dining in and ordered through our waitress. I did my due diligence to ensure everything was prepared and verified prior to our reservations. Come Saturday at our reservation I was informed by our waitress we indeed can NOT purchase any meal deals in house. Our waitress, Marla was amazing and instantly offered to get the manager to discuss further. The "General Manager" Julian came out like he was asleep in the back, not coherent, stumbling and walked up to the table and did not say a word. No introduction, no professionalism, no good customer service NOTHING! He acted like he was high on drugs and definitely not all there. I asked him about the combo box and how I had previously called in and tried so hard to be prepared and verify prior to. He cut me off and said absolutely no we can't do anything for you. I was very kind and asked if there was anything he could do to make this right. Julian advised nope it's our fault and he can't do a damn thing. He then got very combative and advised he is the boss, general manager and owner and there is no one above him and "good luck trying". I then advised I will be calling corporate, in which he replied "there isn't one" a quick google search said otherwise! We were celebrating my mother's very special 65th birthday and retirement to get treated like absolute garbage. I am such a kind individual, when I get treated with respect. Not when I'm disrespected. This general manager is known for using vulgar and racial terms in his work environment and to customers. I am absolutely sick over the treatment we received here. We were treated differently because we had different individuals of color at our table. This is RACISM AT ITS FINEST! If it wasn't for our amazing waitress Marla who flipped the ENTIRE night around and tried her absolute very best to serve us and make us happy, we would have walked out. I highly do NOT recommend going to this location and go to KC location instead!! If you do come to OP location please ask for Ms Marla as she is an amazing waitress!!! I have never seen Strouds so absolutely quiet and empty on a Saturday night but it makes sense now meeting the absolutely disgusting vile GM that runs it. Julian needs to be terminated from his position of management IMMEDIATELY! Marla needs to be rewarded the GM position as she would turn this location around immensely for the better! Stroud's has been a long time favorite for me and my family. Excellent fried chicken and great portion sizes! It's generally served family style, so a few side options can be ordered by different people and everyone can have some. The fried chicken on this visit was juicy and tender, though depending on how busy they are it can vary a bit. The meals start with a soup or salad- nothing fancy, but it's a nice way to start. I love the fried chicken and cottage fries. I've never been a big fan of the gravy, to be honest, but it does the job. Make sure you try their excellent cinnamon rolls that come with the meal.... It tops off the meal perfectly. In fact, I've ordered take-out of just the rolls before. As far as service, we've had some excellent, attentive service, and some bad times. We we're looking forward to going to Strouds today. I ordered an appetizer of gizzards which should come with a side of gravy according to the menu. First did not get the gravy..second these were not whole gizzards on my plate. They were fried pieces of gizzards..mostly small pieces that had been over cooked. Could only choke down a few pieces. Looked like you cut up a gizzard into 8 pieces and cooked. Disappointing..The livers that Randy ordered were ok at best, but at least they were whole livers not chopped up and served in small pieces like my gizzards. The waitress checked on us once. We have been here several times over the years and sadly, it has declined each time. They were out of the potato skins appetizer, which seemed interesting, because it was Saturday night at dinner time and not many people were there. I should have taken that as a sign. The food was good, but one piece of my two-piece chicken dinner was old and dried out. The biggest disappointment was the service. Terrible. Our server had one other small table besides us (there were only three people at our table) and only came to the table to take our order. Then, she stood behind the bar on her cell phone the entire time. Someone else brought out the food, but she didn't come to the table until another server saw us looking around and asked her if she had checked on us. Inexcusable and sad, because they used to have better service than this. The cinnamon rolls, which we had to ask for were barely warm. Overall, not good. Not sure I will return. read more

We have always loved Strouds but my recent experience at Overland Park Strouds was pretty disappointing. The chicken was overly greasy and small in size the fries and cottage fries were also limp and greasy. My husband thought the oil they were using was old as the fried food tasted "off". The cinnamon rolls, which I remember as amazing, were totally different. They appeared to be simple dinner rolls - dry and barely had any cinnamon on them. Seems like cost cutting is negatively impacting their quality. The 2-star vs 1-star is because the server worked her tail off even though she was serving way too many tables. OP Strouds has lost their mojo. Now I see why its not so busy anymore. Would not recommend OP location. Maybe the other locations fare better. So disappointing. Wont be back to Overland Park location. read more

I'm from KC & frequently visited Stroud's since the early 1970's. We now live in Phoenix. We would always go to Strouds every time we would visit our family in KC. This is not the Stroud's that I remember. Our last 3 visits at the restaurant was a disappointment. Our third visit, we called in for a pick up order for 4:00. We arrived 10 minutes early. They had our pick up time for 5:00.??? We waited 45 minutes for our order. We could not eat the chicken gizzards extremely unchewable. They did not properly prepare the livers & gizzards because they were in a rush. We had to discard the gizzards. The livers were at least edible. The lettuce in our salads had brown discolored edges. That is just unacceptable for any restaurant. The quality has slowly diminished. They have lost their quality control & we are so disappointed. Sure miss the the old building & employees.
