I don't think this place has been updated since they opened, but I guess there's charm in outdated decor that screams gawdy. If you've been inside, then you know what I mean. The service was excellent, very attentive and friendly. The ambiance is the same it's been for the 30 years we've lived in the area. I have always loved Jumping Catfish, every thing has been great but not this time. The chicken was greasy and over cooked, Ithe boiled shrimp had a very thick coating and hard. This is a locally owned go to for us. Having been raised eating catfish I was happy to find this gem in a city. The staff are friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is outdoorsman eclectic. (Think 80s bass pro) There are many menu options to choose from, some of which are all you can eat. When seated you are brought out pass arounds of endless white beans, coleslaw, and hushpuppies. Tonight I had the 3 piece catfish with mashed potatoes. My husband had the 2 piece dark meat chicken with mashed potatoes. I ordered hot tea which came out in this cute little teapot. For dessert we had their delicious peach cobbler with icecream. Next time you're in Olathe or Lee's Summit be sure to check them out. read more

We recently moved back to KC, so it had probably been about ten years since we ate here. The food was quite good and the portions were huge. The Wednesday night special is all you can eat popcorn shrimp and they were delicious. The wife had Parmesan crusted broiled catfish and loved it. They bring out bowls of navy beans and Cole slaw as an appetizer. I love their cream cold slaw. They also provide a basket of hush puppies. Come hungry friends read more

I had not been to this location since pre-Covid, but knew what I was anticipating and it was exactly that. A classic trapped in the early 80's rustic fish lodge feel. I came for the all you can eat snow crab legs and tried not to be distracted by all the side dishes. Though I did eat some ham and beans, coleslaw, and a hush puppy of which all was good. The crab legs were just as expected, better than what I can buy at the store. I certainly ate my share of crab legs, but don't know if I got my $60 worth. I came with two business associates from the East Coast. They ordered the all you can eat crab legs and enjoyed their meals. Our waitress was kind enough to allow one of them to try a catfish filet. He enjoyed the catfish too. Our seasoned waitress was mostly on point... friendly and courteous. I actually am planning on meeting my brother at the Lee's Summit location in the next week or two. This has to be my most favorite restaurant in olathe! Dave is usually there to great his guests and will go around the tables to be sure everyone is having a great meal and a great time. Most of his servers have been with him for many, many years and they are very knowledgeable and experienced! I've never had bad service no matter how busy they get! Always brings a bowl of beans, slaw, and hush puppies to the table before they even take your order and will refill them if they see that they are empty. They have many all you can eat specials thought out the week and on Sundays it's always all you can eat anything on the menu that are part of the weekly specials. Every Valentine's Day they give the ladies roses, I think they do for Mother's Day as well but I'm not sure as I've not been there for Mother's Day. We usually make this our valentines, anniversary and birthday destinations. We have never been disappointed in our food and if you walk away hungry it's your own fault as they feed you like my Southern Granny used to! read more

It was as if someone came in with a spray gun and covered everything with sticky stuff. If this were not a birthday celebration for a friend, we would have left for cleaner pastures. Lots of taxidermy here, it's the motif. Family style, so beans, coleslaw, and hush puppies come out right away. Food is fine, many of the dishes are fried, which is the way to enjoy catfish and okra. The kitchen, even way before COVID (lots of birthdays here....) can't seem to serve things generally in the same time together, whether a party of 4 or 10. I've been to the Olathe Jumpin' Catfish multiple times, and I'll continue coming back. I need to work through more items on my to-try list since I keep getting distracted by the the fried chicken livers and gizzards which are outstanding. When you walk in it's hard not to be struck by the decor which is reminiscent of an old-school Bass Pro Shop - mounted taxidermy works and aquariums galore! When sitting down the server will immediately bring family style servings of ham and white beans, coleslaw, and hushpuppies. They're all pretty good, though the hushpuppies could stand a bit more seasoning IMHO. The fried chicken livers and gizzards are great, as is the catfish. Perfectly battered and fried to perfection, crispy on the outside perfect on the inside. The fried clams, shrimp, and stuffed crab are also tasty. I was disappointed by the oysters as they were the tiny from-a-can style of oysters, so if you've had proper fried oysters, these will be a disappointment. Overall, the food and service is consistently good, every time. I still need to try the Hunters Delight dinner as well as the Parmesan Catfish. read more

Best catfish we have ever had. Sides are served family style which was nice. Able to try a few things that way. Has the stuffed crab which was something I had never tried and was amazing. I had a meeting here, otherwise would never have went again. A place from my childhood, it was never my favorite. The interiors are "hunting cabin" vibes, and not in a cool hipster way. Basically stuffed dead animals EVERYWHERE.... staring you down. The waitress was well versed in the "honey", "sweetheart", and "baby". I always find that obnoxious. We have heard a bit about this place. So we decided to try it as a family. We love seafood, chicken fried steak, etc... after being seated we were immediately served a basket of hush puppies and 2 large bowls of coleslaw and ham and beans. I think the gesture is nice. However, most of it went to waste since I am the only one who likes coleslaw and ham & beans. And the portion of hush puppies was too large for the 4 of us to finish with our meals. I am not sure if this is common practice or if we showed in a special day. But, it seems to be quite wasteful given the amount that is likely thrown out for those that do not like this type of food. After reviewing the menu, which is a nice size, and has quite an array of crab, scallops, catfish, chicken, fish, etc... we were ready to order. My wife and I were going to share a meal (partially because of the coleslaw, hush puppies and ham & beans already on the table). The server informed us that it would be an additional $5 if we were going to share an entree. So our entree went from $17.99 to $22.99 because we were not wanting to order more food. Go figure. So instead of doing that I ordered the small chicken fried steak and my wife ordered a catfish filet from the a al carte menu. The server made sure to tell my wife that she was going to be charged if she ate any of the hush puppies, coleslaw or ham & beans, mind you that were brought out without us asking for them. So, they find a way to charge you extra for an already overpriced menu where ever they can, even for things you don't ask for. The server was not rude. But, not what I would call friendly or inviting either. Once the food arrived the catfish was good. Most of the items are fried. However, ours seemed to be cooked well, not over or undercooked. My wife and daughter enjoyed the catfish and my son and I both enjoyed the chicken fried steak. It was also well cooked. You pay seafood prices for everything even non-seafood, which is a bummer. I guess they are offsetting the cost of the wasted coleslaw, hush puppies and ham & beans that get thrown out since you get them whether you want them or not. The other patrons were all friendly. I chatted a bit with an older gentleman who's son was bringing him out to dinner. The atmosphere is a very back country, folksy vibe with taxidermy ever present. Hunting trophies are literally everywhere. If you're into that 1970s truck stop environment. Overall, we enjoyed the catfish and the chicken fried steak. The sides were not great. Coleslaw is akin to KFC quality (sugary and runny) and not much flavor to the hush puppies, which one would think would be a bit better given the prices and the recommendations. The mashed potatoes were pretty bland. But, again, the chicken fried steak and catfish were good. Now we can say we tried it. But, probably won't again. read more

Jumpin Catfish was certainly a unique experience. Much further away than I am used to traveling to eat, Jumpin Catfish is hidden in the corner of a strip mall with what I would say, little signage. We took a turn into a Target parking lot to get there and weren't able to get through so we had to turn around. Needless to say, this place is filled with fish and taxidermy. It looks a little like you've walked into a carpeted and older version of Cabela's. So long as you order food, you get unlimited hushpuppies. The platters are a little pricey but you get a lot of food. I split popcorn shrimp with my sister and it tasted like...popcorn shrimp..Definitely not extraordinary, but it was just about what we expected. I was craving some seafood, and I'm not one to ding a place on looks, so I decided to go in to check it out and order some seafood, mainly shrimp and scallops, nothing fried. The scallops I ordered were sautéed in what seemed to be old oil, something insanely heavy and off. The taste was otherwise bland. They're not buttered or seasoned either. It's very strange. The shrimp was hands down the worst single food item I have ever eaten in my entire life, and I was in the military eating MREs for 5 years. For starters, it labeled as peel and eat, which it was, which is fine on its own, but the shrimp is... visibly unclean. They are not deveined or cleaned thoroughly even on the outside. There was grit all over them. To boot, they are not boiled in any seasoning whatsoever, not even salt. It tastes like they were boiled in dirty pool water, and I am begging you to trust me that this is not an exaggeration. It reminds me of cocktail shrimp trays you get from Walmart that they just threw into a hot tub and then plated. I can't speak for the rest of the dishes, but if they are anything like these two, then they will surely be vile. I would rather eat the leaves off of the trees before I came back here, unfortunately. read more

Heard of this restaurant by my husband's coworker so we decided to give it a try. As soon as we sat down we were brought some hush puppies, cole slaw, & white beans. All were to die for!! So delicious. The waitress was very attentive and our drinks never got low. My husband got the Dave's Creamy Grilled Parmesan Catfish. The fish was so big he couldn't eat it all.
