    Coleslaw Lunch
    Rebekah E.

My husband and I were in the area and stopped here for lunch. It was our first and last time here. They bring you out coleslaw, ham and beans, and hush puppies to start. All three were good. The coleslaw reminded me of KFC's coleslaw, which is my favorite kind of coleslaw. The ham and beans were cooked perfectly. The hush puppies were crispy and moist. The 2 stars are for our entrees. I ordered the stuffed crab lunch. As I was eating the stuffing, I started feeling off. The stuffing was greasy. I lifted up one of the crab shells to find a small puddle of grease on the plate. My husband ordered the grilled lemon pepper catfish with a side of mashed potatoes. When I tried the catfish, I instantly tasted dirty water. The catfish was bland. Although the service was good and the restaurant has a nice, rustic vibe to it, this will be a catfish place we will skip from now on.

    Completely 1st course.

We were super impressed with Jumpin Catfish Restaurant! My wife loves fried fish, so I wanted to treat her to dinner here. They brought out coleslaw, beans, and hush puppies, before we even ordered our dinner. That was a very nice touch and much appreciated. She had the fried shrimp which she enjoyed a great deal. I had a four protein combo meal , which was also delicious. I probably wouldn't get the quail next time, but the catfish, trout and potatoes were absolutely delicious. There were a lot of people inside, enjoying the catfish and good company. We will be back here for sure!

Comfortable and casual feel with an Ozark, Bass Pro, Cabiny kind of feel. They brought hush puppies, big bowl of ham and beans, and big bowl of coleslaw prior to my order. I ordered the all you can eat catfish and chose the potato wedges as my meal. My first portion was about 5 catfish fillets and 10+ potato wedges. Coleslaw was kind of a KFC style with a sweet flavor the way I like it. The beans and potatoe wedges were great and I didn't need to salt or season them at all. Food was hot and seemed fresh. I have wanted to come here a long time, but my family don't like seafood. I learned they have lots of chicken options from the menu. Plan to definitely come back! I had no room for a 2nd serving and was unable to switch my order to the cheaper cost as they start you off with one more fillet with the all you can eat than what the order would have been. The cheaper one is only four filets. If you're unsure if you'll be able to eat more than first plate, you might order the 4 piece catfish and then upgrade if you decide you want more (only a couple dollars more). Otherwise service was good and food was great!

just wanted to go somewhere and have some fish and go home. so, I went to jumping catfish! I had meant to go to the one in Olathe, but ended up at the one in lee summit. I got seated quickly and the sides came out pretty quick. I ordered 3 catfish fillets with potato wedges. the sides included Cole Slaw(Good), pinto bean(Okay), and hush puppie(Good). The food was good, but the place was not clean at all. the place was dusty and dirty. I was sat at a booth and the ledge the booth was attached to was very dirty and dusty. the chandelier that my plate was sat under was so dusty and the chain it was hanging from was very dusty. The windows were smudged, dusty, and finger printed. the fire place that sat in the middle of the restaurant was littered with straw wrapper pieces. For the time restaurants were shutdown and the lack of traffic in restaurants, I don't understand why the restaurant is not clean nor do I appreciate being sat in a nasty establishment. so, I took my food home to finish eating. the thing that disturbs me is that the restaurants was not busy and there could have been cleaning going on, but there was just talking going on. I used to work in the restaurant business and the saying back then was, "if you can lean, you can clean"!! they need to incorporate this saying, and practice, at this establishment. I will not be returning anytime soon! I hadn't been in a while and this let me know that I should have tried a different restaurant for fish. The price was right for the food received, but I'd rather eat some where that management puts the same energy in keeping the place clean as they do the seats filled!

All You Can Eat Alaskan Snow Crabs 3rd plate. All was enjoyed.

We sat at the bar, and the bartender was amazing, full of helpful info about the menu. He told us how the seafood comes in fresh. He recommended oysters to us, and since it was our first time, he threw in a couple of his favorites at no charge. It was also happy hour, and we took advantage of the specials, ordering the cheddar biscuits drizzled with honey and the colossal cocktail shrimp. They really were huge and delicious. We also enjoyed half-price oysters. My husband loved the crushed cocktails We split the mahi-mahi, and we loved how he told us about the fresh fish that had never been frozen and whether it was wild or farm-raised. The mahi was incredible. You could tell it was fresh. We enjoyed the potatoes and the BéreBlanc sauce. This is going to be a place that we will end up becoming regulars at. So happy to have tried it!

That being awkwardly included and all, sis and I dined on some of the best food I've had in a while. We shared smoked oysters topped with bread crumps and parmesan, a super spicy and flavorful salsa-type appetizer with habanero that came with surprisingly flavorful chips lol, we shared some crab cakes, a beautiful aquatic-toned alcoholic drink, and shared one of the best trout dishes I have ever had in my entire human life! 0__0 The rainbow trout was our favorite part of that entire experience, which was tough to decide on honestly.. My 2nd best thing were those oysters! Our waiter was so kind and entertaining, and I really hope we get him the next time I visit! If I remember correctly, his name was Tristin. Thankfully due to how early we were there that day, the restaurant wasn't super packed, so we had plenty of breathing air for most of our visit. During the last 15 minutes it began filling up! This review is a mess you guys, but it's still an absolute satisfied one!

As transplants from another state, and BBQ not being our first language, we wanted to try new things! They came to the table and we were all sort of perplexed. Were they supposed to look like...that? Either way, we dug in. They were cold in the middle, also a strange discovery to us. I ordered the burnt ends, which came to the table closer to cold than warm. The blue cheese potato salad was tasty and all it needed was a lil salt and pepper to make it perfect. All was going well, until my husband was about 4-5 bites into his brisket wrap. He asked me to smell it, and I did. It was funky! Smelled a lot like a foot and not a lot like a tortilla. He asked the server to smell it and they agreed it was a bit odd. The manager came over and denied it smelling like anything. My husband had finished his meal, and we weren't looking for a freebie but wanted to let them know it was a lil weird. Instead of acknowledging the potential issue, we were dismissed as "wrong." It just didn't sit right with me. My husband had some definite issues in the hour or two after eating, so we won't be back. I won't say it was food poisoning because genuinely it could have just not agreed with my husband. I'll put my disclaimer on here, I hope people do enjoy and continue to patronize this small business, it's just not to my liking.

Roots Seasonal Cuisine is one of my favorite spots in Lee's Summit, and my latest happy hour visit…read morereminded me exactly why. I stopped in with my girlfriend Lisa, who loves this place so much they basically have a little corner reserved for her. She likes to work from there because the Wi-Fi is good, the vibe is comfortable, and the food is consistently amazing. We sat at the bar, had a couple glasses of wine, and Austin took great care of us. Lisa had the steak special, which was the ribeye, and I had the salmon. Both were really, really great. The salmon was cooked beautifully and the whole meal was exactly why I keep coming back. One small callout: there was a $3 difference between what the salmon was listed for on the menu and what I was charged. I let Austin know so they could catch it for future guests. It did not change my overall experience, but I appreciated being able to mention it. Brandon, one of the co-owners, is amazing. He came out and spoke with us, and that personal touch is part of what makes Roots feel special. You can tell they care about the food, the service, and the people who come in. Their happy hour is amazing, and their seasonal menu changes are superb. I love coming in and trying different things. The salmon tacos are delicious, the birria fries are a must, and I always look forward to seeing what new crostini they are featuring since those change every few months. Roots is consistent without being boring. Great food, great service, great drinks, and a menu that keeps giving you a reason to come back. Can't wait to come back. See y'all next week.

Last fall, I read a very upbeat review of Roots in The Kansas City Star highlighting the two local…read morechefs who came together to open the restaurant about four years ago. The concept immediately caught my attention -- a menu that rotates quarterly, with roughly one-third new dishes, one-third returning favorites, and one-third permanent staples. Since we were in Lee's Summit this evening, the three of us decided it was a good opportunity to try Roots for the first time. Our meal came to $178 before tip, and unfortunately our experience didn't quite match the expectations set by the press coverage and the many five-star reviews on Yelp. We started with two appetizers our server described as menu favorites: the Dirty Martini Mussels and the Chimichurri Potato Skins. Service was friendly, but timing was slower than expected -- it took nearly 25 minutes for the appetizers to arrive, and the dining room was only about a quarter full around 5:30 p.m. The mussels were an interesting interpretation. The broth leaned heavily toward olive flavors and carried a noticeable level of spice, which was quite different from the more delicate white wine and butter profile we typically associate with this dish. The grilled focaccia served alongside, however, was excellent and perfect for soaking up the broth. The chimichurri potato skins were generously topped with roasted chicken and cheddar cheese, though we were surprised to receive four skins for the $17 price point. They appeared baked rather than deep fried, giving them a softer texture than we expected. Entrées delivered mixed results. My daughter ordered the Monday fried chicken special -- a half bird offered at a $10 discount -- and it was a highlight of the evening. She noted the chicken arrived piping hot, with a distinct pickle-brine flavor and a nicely crisp crust. My wife's experience was less successful. Her $39, 8-ounce flat iron steak, ordered medium rare, arrived closer to rare. Since the steak was already sliced, we were surprised this wasn't caught before being served. She also mentioned the risotto carried a chimichurri flavor that felt unexpected alongside the steak. I ordered the 10-ounce grilled pork chop. While the portion size was generous, the dry rub and candied chili relish overpowered the natural flavor of the pork. That said, the sweet potato fries served with the dish were exceptional and one of the standouts of the meal. Roots clearly has an interesting culinary vision and loyal following, and I genuinely wish the restaurant continued success. Based on this visit, however, the experience wasn't quite strong enough for us to plan a return.

"Premier" isn't marketing flair - it's accurate. This is, hands down, the best raw bar in Kansas City. We arrived for our 5:15 p.m. reservation in the main dining room and were warmly greeted by Allison, our server. She struck the perfect balance - friendly, engaging, and attentive throughout the meal. A great start to the evening. For two diners, we wanted to explore as much of the menu as possible. Before ordering food, we were told the signature Frozen Gin & Tonic was a must. It lived up to the reputation - bright, refreshing, and expertly balanced. The only thing that would have made it better was a slightly warmer dining room. We're big mussel fans, so we opened with the Bangs Island Mussels - and they set the bar high. A generous portion of plump mussels bathed in a white wine and roasted tomato broth that was deeply flavorful without being heavy. The toasted bread was perfect for soaking up every last bite. Simply outstanding. Next came the NOLA-Style Shrimp Gumbo. Served in a small bowl, but packed with richness and depth. Adding a touch of hot sauce brought just the right amount of heat and complexity. A standout dish. My wife - having happily overindulged in mussels and bread - opted for a lighter course: a single Maryland Crab Cake, available fried or broiled. It was almost all crab, clean and flavorful, with a satisfying crust. She couldn't finish it...so I did. When you go to a raw bar, oysters are non-negotiable. I ordered a half dozen featuring both East and West Coast varieties. Each one was pristine, briny, and fresh, and the horseradish had just the right bite. For my entrée, I chose the Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp - four large prawns, each wrapped in crisp, smoky bacon. Simple, well-executed, and a strong finish to the savory courses. Dessert did not disappoint. My wife loved the Lemon Pistachio Chess Torte, while I devoured the Bourbon Apple Tart. She noted that the toasted meringue reminded her of marshmallows - a detail that made us smile. The dining room is intimate and can get noisy as it fills up. Next time, we'll likely try the patio for a different vibe. Pacing throughout the meal was spot-on, dishes came out promptly from the kitchen, and Allison's service tied everything together into a truly memorable evening. We'll definitely be back - and soon.
