I'd heard so many people rave about Earl's Premier that my wife and I finally made our first visit this evening. After one meal, I understand the buzz. "Premier" isn't marketing flair - it's accurate. This is, hands down, the best raw bar in Kansas City. We arrived for our 5:15 p.m. reservation in the main dining room and were warmly greeted by Allison, our server. She struck the perfect balance - friendly, engaging, and attentive throughout the meal. A great start to the evening. For two diners, we wanted to explore as much of the menu as possible. Before ordering food, we were told the signature Frozen Gin & Tonic was a must. It lived up to the reputation - bright, refreshing, and expertly balanced. The only thing that would have made it better was a slightly warmer dining room. We're big mussel fans, so we opened with the Bangs Island Mussels - and they set the bar high. A generous portion of plump mussels bathed in a white wine and roasted tomato broth that was deeply flavorful without being heavy. The toasted bread was perfect for soaking up every last bite. Simply outstanding. Next came the NOLA-Style Shrimp Gumbo. Served in a small bowl, but packed with richness and depth. Adding a touch of hot sauce brought just the right amount of heat and complexity. A standout dish. My wife - having happily overindulged in mussels and bread - opted for a lighter course: a single Maryland Crab Cake, available fried or broiled. It was almost all crab, clean and flavorful, with a satisfying crust. She couldn't finish it...so I did. When you go to a raw bar, oysters are non-negotiable. I ordered a half dozen featuring both East and West Coast varieties. Each one was pristine, briny, and fresh, and the horseradish had just the right bite. For my entrée, I chose the Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp - four large prawns, each wrapped in crisp, smoky bacon. Simple, well-executed, and a strong finish to the savory courses. Dessert did not disappoint. My wife loved the Lemon Pistachio Chess Torte, while I devoured the Bourbon Apple Tart. She noted that the toasted meringue reminded her of marshmallows - a detail that made us smile. The dining room is intimate and can get noisy as it fills up. Next time, we'll likely try the patio for a different vibe. Pacing throughout the meal was spot-on, dishes came out promptly from the kitchen, and Allison's service tied everything together into a truly memorable evening. Visited on a Monday night with a friend around 4pm, restaurant had only a few guests but plenty of open space so grabbed seats at the bar. Drinks: Frozen Gin and Tonic - fantastic, really great balance of sweetness and citrus/acidity, velvety frozen slushy texture, definitely worth a try if you like G&T's Food: Gumbo - so good, perfectly seasoned savory and spicy, generous with the sausage and shrimp in the gumbo, were with a little bit of rice on the bottom, perfect for a chilly night Clam toast - tasty, nice crispy crusty bread, topped with chopped clams sauteed in garlic butter, ontop of a creamy sauce and a bright refreshing salad, some clams had a slightly chewier texture is my only note but a delicious bite Market Veggies - roasted Brussels sprouts with sweet potatoes and cherry agridoche, hearty and filling, a little sweet from the cherries, a bit of tanginess from the vinegar, a great way to round out our late lunch, early dinner Service was awesome, super friendly staff with great recommendations. Best crab cake in KC. Yeah, I said it. I moved back to KC from Maryland 5 years ago and have been on the hunt for a decent crab cake ever since. And I've kept expectations low, considering we're in the middle of the country far from any coastal waters. But when my son & daughter-in-law invited me out to Earl's and I saw they had "eastern shore crab dip" on the menu, my curiosity was peaked. The crab dip was delicious, so we decided to take a chance on the crab cake, and I'm SO glad we did! It took me right back to the dock bars in Maryland, even the decor and atmosphere feels like one of the small places in Annapolis. Then I found out the owner is from Baltimore, and that explained everything. They're a little pricey and they don't offer any happy hour specials, but it's worth it. Okay so first off, Earl's Premier is cute cute. Chill patio, oysters on deck, and that elevated coastal vibe that makes you feel like you're on vacation even though you're still in Kansas City. I came through for a late lunch and ordered the Cod Sando with fries and a Fall Frozen Sangria. Let me just say this, that sandwich is basically the grown woman version of a McDonald's Filet O Fish in the best possible way. It's crispy, hot, and flaky with melty cheese, lettuce, and tartar sauce on a soft bun that holds it all together. Every bite was pure comfort. It gave fried fish Friday energy with first-class execution. I felt hugged and slightly reborn. The fries were golden, herby, and came out piping hot. Dipped in ketchup, they were perfect. The sangria was icy and strong enough to make me forget it was a Tuesday. Service was friendly and easygoing. Jessica R took great care of me and the vibe felt relaxed, not rushed. They had a bottle of water and glass already set up for self serve hydration which I loved. Overall, Earl's feels like the type of place you go for oysters and chill conversation, but you stay for the comfort food and good people watching. Would I go back? Absolutely. Next time I'm trying the grilled fish or something off the oyster menu. But for today, the Cod Sando did exactly what it needed to do. Wow, this was super yummy! We started off with cocktails, I had the tulum raider which was not the best cocktail I've had in my life but it was still pretty good, my husband had the frozen rum runner and neither of us cared for it much. Then we had a bowl of the clam chowder, it was super creamy and had lots of clam in it, it also had large chunks of pork belly. It came with two toasted saltine crackers that were delicious kc I thought the chowder could use a touch of salt but my husband thought it was perfect. Overall it was really yummy. Them we had the little gem salad, we split the portion which they brought out on separate plates which was a nice touch! The salad itself was 10/10! The perfect amount of dressing, the cheese was so fresh and delicious. The letter was perfectly and the croutons were fantastic as well. And the star of the salad were the anchovies, we each got 3 on our portions and they were so salty and delicious.al after we said we should have ordered extra anchovies for our salad we loved them so much. We had the No. 1. Seafood tour as our main course. All of the oysters were really good. We did ask for hot sauce as we like it on our oysters but we didn't care for the hot sauce they provided, which is fine the oysters were amazing without! The shrimp were HUGE and I loved the cocktail sauce they came with, it had plenty of horseradish in it which I love! The crudo was good but the sauce on it was on a sweeter side, I still enjoyed it but I prefer more savory for my palette. And the scallop tataki was so creamy and delicious. We got a key lime cheesecake to go because we were so stuffed, ate it at home and it was very good, not too sweet! The place is very small with no parking so prepare for street parking and make sure to make a reservation! We also thought it was a little loud inside but it was tolerable! I hate to update my review for Earl's as it's long been one of my fiancé's and my favorite spots but our recent visit was a real miss. I specifically chose Earl's over several other favorites to celebrate my birthday (on a Wednesday) and unfortunately, the experience was so disappointing. We spent over $200 on food and enjoyed very little of it. The fried fish and oysters were solid, but every crab and lobster dish we ordered was -quite frankly- bad. The flavors were off and the quality was not what I've come to expect from Earl's. Our server was wonderful and genuinely tried to make things right, but the GM only comped one item so that left us with a $240 tab for a meal that fell completely flat. It's time for Earl's to mix it up a bit. This is the third time I've gone and it's getting harder to find something I want to order off the menu. The menu hasn't changed much since I've first eaten there. Great option if you love fresh oysters as they are flown in daily. The fish of the day was Salmon, a pretty boring option considering you can get salmon anywhere. I would expect something more exciting from a top notch seafood restaurant. The frozen gin and tonic is delicious and truly the only cocktail there I have ever enjoyed. I wanted very much to order something new this time but ended up with my tried and true mussels with grilled bread. It's a great vibe whether you eat at the bar or in the covered patio. Service is pretty good if not a little slow. The outdoor area is good for those with children. Good for a happy hour as I think the apps are more interesting than the mains. Wonderful bday lunch with my son. We love fresh oysters we did 2 of each they offered. Then we enjoyed a cup of clam chowder it was so flavorful and creamy I love they put a clam in there. Next we had their Bang mussels we went with toasted bread instead of fries to soak up the delicious sauce. It was my bday lunch and she gave me a Madagascar, vanilla, bean ice cream drizzled with olive oil and flakes salt. It was the absolute best end to lunch! The wait staff is so attentive and knowledgeable about all the oysters. They offer very accommodating. I love the decor and the vibe of the restaurant. Their music was so on point. The fresh schucked oysters were awesome, and the clam chowder was fantastic. Lobster roll sandwich very nice. The white wine list was weak, they had some Washington and California whites I didn't like. Earl's needs to add some sweet Missouri whites from Hermanhoff Winery or Les Bourgeois Vinyards. The Good--Service was excellent, great location. Tuna tartare, hush puppies, chowder and mussels all excellent. Great seasoning, and amazing portion of the mussels. Needs improvement--in summer with no A/C it's very warm inside, especially with a full house. The salmon special--got a tail piece, so thinner and as a result was overcooked and dry. The seasoning and vegetable accompaniment were excellent. The restaurant staff was so gracious and went above and beyond to help the situation. I'd give 4.5 stars if I could. Very excited for this new shop right next to Earl's Premiere! I've been in twice since they've opened and am very happy to have something like this close to home. They have fresh Demi baguettes daily, coffee, sweets, and grab and go food. I've had one of their sandwiches, the shrimp orzo, and a greens salad! I've loved it all. Everything about this place is perfect and delicious. They aren't lying when they say they specialize in oysters. These are the freshest and most flavorful oysters I have ever had anywhere, we have to come back for a full dozen. In addition, all of our cocktails were delicious and the lobster rolls were filled with meat. The clam chowder was the first thing in my life that got me to not actually mind bacon. We have to come back to try everything. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant that doesn't make it feel like you have to dress too fancy like other high end seafood restaurants. Too long didn't read version: this place is legit, great drinks, even better seafood, legit lobster rolls that were indistinguishable from the ones I've had in Connecticut and Boston. Oysters fresh and excellent. If you're looking for killer seafood, this is the place to be. One of the best meals I've had in Kansas City ever. Longer version: Simply could not have asked for a better dining experience in Kansas City for my second anniversary with my wife. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a cocktail while waiting for our table to be ready and we loved the experience of sitting at the bar and admiring the decoration and how nice the space was. We were quickly served our drinks and that was indicative of the service the entire night, very kind courteous and prompt, what one would expect for a place of this caliber. My wife got the Mai Thai and I got the Cold Fashioned, they were fantastic and we had a couple throughout the dinner. When we got seated we ordered some appetizers, starting with hush puppies, peel and eat shrimp and I got some oysters for myself. They were all amazing, the oysters were all fresh vibrant and delightful and the mignonette they had was a perfect accompaniment to them, the peel and eat shrimp blew me away and I loved the tartar sauce they came with for dipping, and the hush puppies were so good we had another order to snack on while we nursed our drinks and waited to order our entrée. Finally we both ordered a lobster roll and it was delightful. I've been lucky to travel to Boston and up and down the coast of Connecticut and go to restaurants like Saltie Girl and have their lobster rolls to enjoy and this one sits right there amongst the best I've ever had and wouldn't be surprised if this is the best lobster roll in Kansas City you can get. You can tell that it was fresh, and the people making it knew how to handle such a hard to source ingredient in KC. I'm sure it's flown in but all the same it's an impressive effort that doesn't go unnoticed. The portion was more than generous, and as someone that usually prefers Connecticut style rolls with warm butter, this one completely changed my opinion. The fries that it came with could have been a larger bowl or more but they were well made and the side salad was a nice touch and was a perfectly bright accompaniment to round it all out. We skipped desert, but the restaraunt was nice enough to provide us some sips of wine/ champagne to congratulate us on our anniversary on the house. This might be my new favorite restaurant in KC. Sometimes a restaurant really makes an impression on you, much like a first encounter with someone who you will from then on regard as a lifelong friend. Earl's Premier did an incredible job with introductions because the decor spoke for itself. Once inside the quaint bustling restaurant you instantly know you have been transported to a fish shack of sorts. With nautical decor from floor to ceiling they really paid attention to theming at Earl's. If you are uncomfortable sharing personal space maybe come at an off time because the tables are very close together (hence, the no photos included with this review) and the space itself is small. But, the food and overall ambiance makes this small detail part of the charm not something to complain over. Everything I tried from the menu was exceptional, creative takes on old classics, nothing too out of the box but each dish felt elevated. The smoked trout dip had big flaky pieces of fish with a mild cream cheese base, it was "of the sea" without being too fishy. The clam chowder is a must order here, no matter the season- just trust me and get it! For the mains we sampled the fried cod as well as the crab cake and both were excellent. Sometimes crab cakes can be mushy and packed full of cheap binder- not at earls! These crab cakes fell apart by fork and were topped with a tangy salty old bay remoulade. Absolutely delicious, probably some of the best I've had on the no-coast. Now onto the fried cod, it was crispy golden brown and flaky, all things good fried fish should be. The subtle spice from the jalapeño dill tartar sauce added just enough of a fresh take to make the dish interesting but still approachable. Also, if you're a drinker then do not skip out on the frozen gin and tonic, as someone who doesn't like frozen batched cocktails this changed my opinion. Love the service and friendliness of staff! I was very impressed with how well their staff works together and how they were always aware of what every table might need without the customer even having to ask for it. Our server, Tim, did an exceptional job of encouraging us to try more things without seeming aggressive about it. That is an underrated skill for sure! We started with cocktails and I had the Lion's Tail and hubby tried the frozen gin and tonic. I'm not really a gin drinker, but after tasting it, I can see where this just qualifies as a very easy summer drink regardless of your favorite liquor. We paired those with the tin fish plate. I enjoyed the dish, but it didn't have enough distinct flavor that I would order it again. Hubby had the clam chowder and crab cakes for dinner and liked them both. The crab cakes will definitely be a repeat order for us! I tried the Shrimp, Scallop and Mussels Fra Diavolo and loved it. The dish was full of seafood and the tomato sauce had great flavor. The portion was definitely large enough, that I will get another meal out of it for sure. I also had to try the Cold Fashioned once our server described it. I've been wanting to go here since it opened, and now with all the accolades, I REALLY wanted to go, but Brookside is a trek to get to from where I live so it's taken me ages to get here but I know I'll be back, and hopefully soon! I will say, when we first arrived, it didn't give the best first impression. The entrance is really crowded (or cozy, however, you feel like defining it) and though we had reservations, it felt a little disorganized. But fortunately we maybe waited 3 minutes and got to our seats and wonderful meal right away. Once I was seated, I could really appreciate the cozy vibes. Once you are at your table, it feels more spacious and while it's a pretty noisy restaurant, it added to the experience, like a neighborhood spot, rather than obnoxious. Anyway, our waitress came by pretty quickly and told us the drink specials. I got the frozen Singapore sling special, and my boyfriend got their play on a sangria. A few minutes later she came back to go over the menu. She gave some really solid recommendations. But we started with appetizers, which were the hush puppies and the crabcake. You can get an option of two crabcakes, but they are sizable and I knew that we were gonna get a lot of food, so we went with 1. I will say one of the most impressive parts of the meal was the speed of the kitchen. We were lucky to be seated right across from the kitchen and they were moving! Plus, it was fun seeing all the different food coming out. Everything looked so good! Our apps actually came out a minute or 2 before the drinks. And holy cow, they were incredible. The hush puppies in particular were mind-blowing. Like if a hush puppy and a funnel cake had a baby. So light and fluffy on the inside and so crispy on the outside. I'd go back just for the hush puppies, but I don't wanna sleep on the crabcake either. Huge chunks of crab and really delicious. I'm glad we got just one because it was quite sizable and really filling. I should add that we both really enjoyed our drinks and as we were working our way through our appetizers, we put in our entrée orders. We ordered the crispy fried fish, their play on fish and chips, and the lobster roll (which was $48 on the day we went, since it's not listed on the menu). Those also came out at an impressive clip. My boyfriend and I were sharing entrées, so I started with the fish and chips. I thought they were delicious. I really enjoyed their play on a tartar sauce, which was very heavy on dill, but with a kick of jalapeño. My boyfriend didn't love the sauce, but I kept going back to it. The fries were terrific. I was saying to my boyfriend that you know some restaurants do a more rustic fry, but I want my fries to feel like McDonald's fries, but better, and that's what these were. Once we both had about half our plates, we switched. And wow, definitely the best lobster roll I've had in KC. Again, huge chunks of lobster on a delicious roll. This also came with fries plus a really tasty side salad, which was appreciated with such a carb/deep fry heavy meal. Fortunately really generous portions. At this point we were getting pretty full but did leave room for dessert. They had an apple cobbler, a chocolate mousse tart, a root beer float, and ice cream on offer. And while I was really tempted by the root beer float, we decided to go with something that wasn't very easy to make, which was chocolate mousse tart. Our waitress asked if we wanted a scoop of ice cream with it, and we declined. And I'm glad we did because it was very rich and really filling and frankly ice cream would've just been gilding the lily. It was really delicious, and I loved use of salt. Anyway, it really was just an incredible experience. Service was perfect. She showed up at all the right points in the meal, was friendly and helpful. The ambiance, once we were seated, was so cozy and warm, and the food was off-the-charts. And what really struck me is how approachable the menu is. It has all the classic "standard" seafood a midwesterner would like - fish and chips, crab cakes, shrimp cocktail, but also options for people who won't eat seafood as well as a significant raw bar for those who do, all in a really small, but smart, menu. After eyeing this place for over a year, my partner and I finally had time to visit for a weekend lunch. We have found a new KCMO favorite! I am an avid seafood lover, but my partner... is not. We were happy to see a burger on the menu, but did feel like this was a special treat mainly for me. But y'all. This is literally the best burger either of us have EVER had, anywhere. This isn't an afterthought on the menu. I still have dreams of this burger and would go back purely for that. I had the lobster roll, which was also fresh and delicious. The bread itself is divine. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. We did not have a reservation and had to wait about 50 minutes to get our table which was totally understandable. The vibe is definitely coastal and we enjoyed the "laidbackness" of it. My husband ordered the Crescent City cocktail and he absolutely loved it. The banana was the perfect amount he said! We started off our food with the Hot Honeyed Hush Puppies..y'all. It's probably one of the best things I've had and it's pretty simple. The hot honey butter took it over the top. For dinner, I opted for the Maryland Crab Cake and got a side order of fries with this. The fries were perfection, fried to a crisp. The crab cake was absolutely amazing. Born and raised there for 28 years, I promise you I know MD crab cakes. I don't know why I let anyone talk me into them, being in KC. I honestly think I should get my money back because it just pissed me off. What I did like were the drinks. A little pricey but well made. What a cool spot if you are looking for fresh oysters. This is the old Chai Shai spot (RIP ), but they did an awesome job remodeling the inside to feel like you're somewhere on the East coast eating freshly shucked oysters. If you have to get one thing, you have to start with the frozen G&T, so good and definitely worth however many calories are in it. They have changing selection of oysters from both coasts, all were delicious and very fresh. We also had a cup of the clam chowder which we thought was awesome, as well as the fried clam strips. For our mains we had the lobster roll which was on point, as well as the fish and chips and mussels. Mussels were just ok but everything else was very tasty. We went to Earl's on Friday night and were able to get seats on the patio--we were a party of 6. It is enclosed for the season and heated so we were quite comfortable. (Reservations recommended, especially for dinner.) My husband had Guinness on tap, others had drinks including an Old Fashioned, a margarita, wine, iced tea, and soft drinks. Drinks came promptly and we started with appetizers. We ordered a variety of East coast and West coast oysters, (raw) salmon crudo, and crab legs out of the shell. They were all excellent, but my favorite was the crab with drawn butter. For entrees, I ordered the crab cakes. My husband got fish & chips (cod), our daughter got a cheeseburger and fries, our friends got the catch of the day, winter mussels, and the lobster roll. Everyone was happy with what they ordered. My crab cakes were absolutely delicious! I tried my husband's fried cod and I am definitely getting that next time. I have no pictures of the desserts because we started eating them as soon as they came. We got one of each option: vanilla ice cream with sea salt and olive oil, chocolate mousse, and a mini key lime pie with graham cracker base (not a crust). Olive oil and salt on ice cream sounded strange to me, but I tried it am I'm so glad I did. It was delicious. It was served with a section of waffle cone type cookie/garnish, and it tasted good broken off and dipped in the ice cream. My daughter is a chocolate fan and she loved the mousse. My favorite was the key lime. The key lime filling was the best kind of tart, topped with whipped cream and layered on a graham cracker base. All in all, it was a fun, tasty evening.
