Ceviche of the Day
Rick M.

The food and drink were delicious, however, the portions were on the smaller side, albeit expensive.

I got to eat here for a birthday dinner. We had the best service. I almost cried when she brought me out a gf df dessert! Our table of four ordered lots of dishes... and more than one round of chips and guacamole. I had ceviche and the pozole soup. Both were delicious. The restaurant was comfortable and decorated in a very classy but not stuffy way. It's brought to you by the same owners as Bacaro Primo and Earl's Premier. Top notch food and service.

Brunch Menu

I went with my partner and a group of friends to Sea Capitan for brunch. The weather was perfect, so the patio was poppin', but we opted to sit inside. This is the former Blu Hwy space and focuses on Mexican Coastal/Seafood from the Earls Premier & Bacaro Primo team. Overall, it wasn't too crowded, but we made reservations just in case. We started off with cocktails and I opted for the Carajillo (iykyk, it's the new Espresso Martini.) Others got a Frozen Paloma and a Margarita. I wanted the Carajillo to have more a stronger coffee punch, but it was still tasty. We started with the Guacamole (I recommend getting it with a mix of Chicharones and Totopos.) We also tried the Chile Con Queso (which was fab and we needed more chips to finish it, which they were kind to offer proactively.) For my main, I got the Fish Tacos ("Tacos La Paz" - Crispy Battered Cod with Salsa Blanca.) What's neat is that they come partially deconstructed, so you can add as much lime, cilantro, cabbage, salsa and radish as you'd like. I found the tacos substantial, 3 was perfect as I was fairly hungry. I tried my partner's tacos as well and they were tasty ("Tacos Yucateco Asados" with a Salsa Cruda.) He said he wishes the salsa was spicier though. Overall, a great experience. I'd go back for brunch (I was also eyeing the Pozole) or to try their dinner menu (I'm eying the duck.) It's a little spendy, so it's not an everyday meal. However, if you're with friends and want a good time, you'll have it here.

Cod rollup "tacos" but it was impossible to roll the ingredients up in small tortillas.
Susan M.

The music was insanely loud, our server was great and patient, and he "translated' menu items for us gringos. I don't recommend the chili con queso appetizer because it didn't taste like any I've had before and was kind of pink, thick and mushy, and served with very few chips. I have the cod tacos which were quite good, but ask right away for more of the Crema sauce and more lime!! My friend had a red shrimp dish of some sort that was spicier than expected, and not a favorite, no matter how good it sounded on the menu . We split a small lime margarita-inspired "tortlet" for dessert...tart and tasty!

Having dined at Bacaro Primo, we were excited to hear the owners were opening a Mexican restaurant just south of the Plaza. Last night was our first visit to Sea Capitan, and we loved the décor, the food, and the service. We're already planning our return. What stands out about the menu is that it's elevated Mexican with a seafood focus--but not exclusively seafood. Think bold flavors, quality ingredients, and thoughtful plating. We arrived at 6:15 pm to find the bar area buzzing. One note: the noise from the bar does spill into the dining room and can make conversation a bit of a challenge. A glass partition could easily solve that. For a spot that's been open barely two weeks, everything still has that "just out of the box" freshness--menus, silverware, glassware--crisp and clean. Drinks: The Margarita Capitan is a must. Perfect balance of tart lime, smooth tequila, and just enough sweetness to keep you coming back for another sip. Starters: * Queso Fundido - molten cheesy goodness, bubbling hot when it arrived. Once it cooled slightly, it had that perfect stretchy texture without losing creaminess. * Totopos and Salsa - thin, crisp tortilla chips with a light dusting of sea salt. The four salsas were excellent, though a description would've helped. For heat lovers: the red and the dark green bring serious fire. Entrées: * Charcoal-Grilled Shrimp - These weren't shrimp; they were massive, meaty prawns, brushed with chile-garlic butter. Messy in the best way, and the warm wet towel was a thoughtful touch. * Prime Skirt Steak - My wife's choice. Super tender, full of flavor, and cooked to perfection. * Chimichanga - Stuffed with potato-sausage filling and topped with chile con queso. Rich, hearty, and perfectly fried. * Three Tacos - Chicken, pork, and vegan. All flavorful, but the tortillas were too small--one bite and they fell apart. Side to Applaud: The Esquite Asado deserves its own ovation. Charred, sweet corn kernels with just enough smoky flavor to make you think of summer nights. Dessert: The burnt cheesecake is a winner. Imagine the slightly bitter caramelized edge of a toasted marshmallow against creamy cheesecake. The lime curd brought a bright, tangy finish that kept it from being overly sweet. Service: Madi, our server, was friendly, attentive, and knew the menu well. Bottom line: Sea Capitan is a welcome, upscale twist on Mexican dining in KC. Go now, before everyone else discovers it.

Great food, impeccable service and super yummy cocktails! Everything was so fresh and well garnished. From the hostess to the wait staff, everyone was so friendly! Will definitely be back!

From the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the entire waitstaff--every employee took the time to say hello, creating such a welcoming atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious, from the chips and salsa all the way to the fried ice cream. While the portions were a bit on the smaller side, the quality and flavor definitely made it worthwhile. A must try!

Camarones Al Carbon

We celebrated our anniversary at Sea Capitan as it has been new on our list of must try restaurants. We absolutely love their sister restaurants Bacaro Primo and Earl's Premier. Sea Capitan did not disappoint! From the moment you walk in (past a lively patio), you will be warmly greeted into a pleasantly decorated space with a gorgeous bar and friendly staff. Elizabeth took excellent care of us, fully explaining the options on the new menu and treating us kindly for our anniversary. We ordered the Camarones Al Carbon (the most gigantic prawns I've ever seen), Camote (roasted sweet potatoes with mole and agave), and a taco combination of La Paz (battered cod) and Aguacate (vegetarian). Everything was delicious, with a wonderful coastal vibe, although a tiny bit under-seasoned for my palate. I am very much looking forward to returning to try other menu items.

Such a great new spot!! Sat at the bar but didn't ruin the experience- had a great bartender who gave good recommendations and was attentive without being overbearing. The queso fundido was delicious, my friends had the tacos and raved about all of them, and I had the ceviche which was flavorful, fresh, and so yummy. There was an actually a quiet moment during dinner because we were all too invested in eating to yap - which is saying something. Will definitely be back!!

Fundido with chorizo
Susan C.

Was excited to come here since I love their other restaurants. Unfortunately, I won't be back. Very pricey for what you get. Ordered the fundido cheese dip with chorizo. Was okay but very little chorizo and had no spice at all. Ordered steak carne asada and lamb and beef barbacoa tacos. Very small. Lamb and beef tacos at least had some type of marinade. Steak tacos were bland and only tasted of an unpleasant charred taste. Margaritas were small and expensive. $100 for 2 of us for lunch and we were still hungry. Our waitress was very friendly but that was the highlight. So disappointed. They need a lunch priced menu. Three very small tacos were $24. Cool looking restaurant and great patio. Hope they make adjustments.

Chimichanga ... for the win!
Mac M.

Because brunch is -- literally -- the most important meal of the day, I just tried out the new Sea Capitán eatery on the Plaza. The restaurateurs behind Earl's Premier have unveiled this decidedly Spanish-meets-seafood-fusion bistro. Be advised, the brunch menu itself is small-ish, but there are plenty of other tasty options. The bartender Amy recommended both the chilaquiles and the chimichanga. Both were hearty and flavorful. And color me a huge fan of the street corn, too. Open just two weeks, the staff is still finding their footing, but the food -- while pricey-ish -- is sch-amazing and I can't wait to go back and try 'em out for dinner.

Guacamole
Alison L.

All I can say is wow! I was so impressed by Sea Capitán! You'll definitely need a reservation but it's well worth the effort! The ambiance is so fun and welcoming. The decor is beautiful and really adds to the vibe of the restaurant. The inside is spacious with a well appointed bar and four (I believe) seating areas that make it feel cozy but still open to the rest of the restaurant which was a really nice touch. The food was incredible. I started with the frozen margarita which was delicious. The waitress also highly recommended the frozen paloma which I cannot wait to try next time! We then grabbed the guacamole which came with some pico on the side and four large crispy corn tortillas - perfect for two of us to share! I had the Tacos La Paz (crispy battered cod) and my girlfriend had the Tacos Cochinita (slow cooked pork). We were both so impressed with the flavor of these tacos and loved that they were served on local Yoli tortillas! The serving sizes were plentiful - we finished our tacos but felt completely full after! I can't recommend this place enough. I already have a list of people I can't wait to tell about this place and enjoy it with. I will certainly be back soon!

This rooftop gem on the Country Club Plaza has such a youthful, energetic vibe--perfect for a milestone like this. We went all out and sampled a ton from the menu: fried lobster tail, pepperoni pizza, spicy tuna roll, salmon roll, wagyu Nagiri, oysters with caviar, and wagyu sliders. Most of the food was absolutely delicious! The sushi rolls stood out with their unique flavors and beautiful presentation--what a nice surprise. Our absolute favorites were the wagyu nagiri (melt-in-your-mouth incredible) and the oysters with caviar. The wagyu sliders were also a hit. That said, the fried lobster tail was a bit of a letdown--chewy and lacking the flavor punch that everything else delivered. The atmosphere is lively and fun, but heads up: it gets very loud. We were at one of those tiny cocktail tables and basically had to yell across it to chat, which made conversation a challenge during dinner. On the bright side, we scored an amazing seat with a stunning view of the Plaza. Watching the sunset while eating was magical and made the whole experience feel extra special for a birthday. Overall, great food (with just a couple minor misses), awesome vibes, top-notch service, and that unbeatable rooftop setting. I'd definitely recommend Prime Social and we'd go back in a heartbeat--maybe just bring earplugs if you're planning to talk a lot! 4 stars.

It's located in a cool area in the middle of the plaza right underneath Chiefs Fit gym. As soon as you enter you get a feel for the great ambiance and fun variety of music. We came in during a cold snowy day and took full advantage of the FREE coat check at the front desk. On the first floor there's a mini golf course as well as a full bar and seating area. Once you go downstairs though, you'll see just how massive the place is. Theres TONS of seating and cool little nooks to hangout in which make it great for a date night or corporate events. Once you get into the mini golf there's some great courses to check out. Each one has a different theme and they make it super simple to track your points. Simply enter the names of all your players on the touch screen at the first hole, then enter the number of strokes afterwards. After that it will follow you throughout the course until you're finished and tell you who wins at the end! There's also a place to sit your drinks at the start of each hole with a menu of course specific cocktails that I highly recommend trying. Every part of this place is perfect to take pictures and have a great time. But in my opinion, the true highlight of the Puttery is the food. I had the pleasure of meeting the head chef while here and he truly puts his heart into the menu. Our server Mariah was also super helpful giving us drink and food recommendations throughout our time here. Everything sounded amazing but I had to go with the Cajun Chicken Philly since I'm a sucker for a Philly sandwich. It was one of my favorite sandwiches I've ever had. From the soft delicious bread to the unbelievably juicy and tender chicken, this was such a great dish. The combination of ingredients and the plating itself made it clear that nothing comes as an afterthought here. I also tried the loaded fries which were a great recent addition to the menu. Last, we finished it off by trying the Tiramisu, Raspberry Donut Cheesecake, and the Bourbon Bread Pudding. Each one was really amazing but my favorite was the Raspberry Donut Cheesecake, and I'm not even a huge cheesecake fan! I definitely plan to come back here just for the food because it was so delicious!! And on top of that, they recently started a meal prep service which I plan to take full advantage of! Overall you can tell that every detail is thought through at the Puttery. It truly feels like a luxury experience with an element of fun to round it out. The service is amazing and the food and drinks are to die for. If you're ever looking for a fun date night, a group outing, or even just a place for a solo dinner or drinks, you have to check this place out!

Came to Kansas City for a few days to visit some friends over NYE. I do a lot of research before I…read morearrive, and I find the best restaurants in town. Gram & Dun was one of those restaurants. We show up for our reservations and get seated for a wonderful meal. Ambiance was surreal. The vibes inside were that of a modern Italian kitchen inside of a Southern parlor room. I know that doesn't make any sense, but it's true. And the restaurant looks out upon the quaint downtown street of this Kansas City suburb through giant, floor-to-ceiling windows. So beautiful. Service was great, as well. The server knew the menu very well, and was able to answer a few questions, guiding me to the correct thing to order. The apps, entrees, and dessert were all paced well, too. Service lead to a lovely evening. As for the food, we started off with the Not-So-Standard Potato Chips (parmesan, sauce flight: gold sauce, comeback sauce, black pepper bourbon ketchup). These were very good. House cooked chips that were just thick enough, had a good bite to them, and were absolutely covered in luscious parm. The sauce flight was fun, too. Keep the leftovers around to pair with the rest of your meal. Onto the Low Country Pimento Cheese (fried saltine crackers, candied black pepper bacon, bread & butter pickles, tomato jalapeño jam). Hillbilly charcuterie. Lots of fun to mix and match some bacon, some pickles, a little jam, all on those very unctuous Saltines. Very fun app. My main was the Brick Pressed Chicken (lemon & thyme brine, prosciutto & sausage bread pudding, caramelized cabbage, lemon & shallot cream sauce). Chicken was cooked to a charred perfection, that savory bread pudding was just an amazing as it sounds, and the cream sauce really brightened everything up. I don't usually get chicken, but I'm telling you, this was the chicken to get. I also got to try one of the nightly specials, some sort of cheesy parmesan pasta covered in black truffle shavings. It was as extravagant as it sounds. Fresh-made pastas, giant chunks of lobster, cheesy ooey gooey, and those truffle shavings add just a touch of class and umami that really made this a good pasta dish. We finished up with the Gram & Dun Bar (chocolate peanut and pretzel nougat, marshmallow cream cheese, chocolate mousse, peanut butter ice cream). Again, another thing I don't usually go for, the dessert bar, but this place did it in a way I haven't seen before. Each layer added to the dessert. Nougat, cream cheese, and mousse, all tied together with that cold, creamy peanut butter ice cream. So so good. Overall, as good as this place was on paper, Gram & Dun really blew me away. Really elegant food, found right in the heart of the country. It was a pleasant surprise, and I would come back in a heartbeat.

Nestled inside the ultra-luxurious Raphael Hotel, this upscale Restaurant/jazz club had our group feeling like we were heading to a high-society adult prom. The ambiance practically demands a raised eyebrow and a sophisticated toast. Naturally, the libations were flowing. On one end of the table sat a chocolate martini so decadent it looked borderline sinful. On the polar opposite end of the spectrum, I ordered an extra-dirty Chopin martini, complete with blue-cheese-stuffed olives. Look, it didn't reinvent the wheel, but it was executed exactly the way I'd make it at home--assuming I could ever actually find a bottle of Chopin in any of our local liquor establishments. (Seriously, who is hoarding it?) We kicked things off with the gourmet bread basket. Do yourself a favor and cough up the extra $5 for the super soft bread and whipped butter; your tastebuds will thank you for not being cheap. For my starter, I opted for the she-crab soup, which presented itself as a spectacularly rich crab bisque. Word on the street is that she-crab Is vastly superior to he-crab. This is a PG-rated review, so I shall leave the mechanics to your imagination. Then came the piece de résistance: the 12-ounce ribeye, flanked by asparagus spears and Delmonico potatoes. This sucker was thick. When I asked our waitress for a proper steak knife, she politely pointed to my standard-issue butter knife and confidently declared, "That's it!" I thought she was joking. She wasn't. Melt-in-your-mouth is an understatement; this medium-rare masterpiece yielded to a butter knife like it was soft brie. The sides were equally stellar. The Delmonico potatoes were a beautifully elevated, elite version of scalloped potatoes, and the asparagus was snappy, tender, and perfectly seasoned. The evening's only tragic misstep was the cheesecake. It, too, was incredibly thick--but in all the wrong ways. While fortunately not overbaked, the texture resembled a very well-flavored, highly gourmet paste. To add insult to injury, the graham cracker crust had completely surrendered its structural integrity, offering none of the classic crunch I crave. Minor dessert tragedy aside, it was a phenomenal evening. The service was impeccable, the vibe was unmatched, and that steak alone warrants a return visit. Next time, I'll just be exploring a different corner of the dessert menu.

Executive Chef Charles D'Ablaing personally carved the meat selections. He was very kind and took the time to explain some of the hot entrée options, which we really appreciated. The staff overall were friendly, attentive, and kept everything flowing smoothly even during the busy brunch crowd.
