the perfect patio dinner! you get yummy food, good service, and great views. we booked our reservation for 4 ppl at 6pm so we'd could do a sunset walk at the park in the area right after dinner and the timing was perfect. i heavily recommend the bang bang shrimp, verbena wedge, and the "you're a peach" drink as stand out menu items! my friend got the pan- seared amish chicken breast and didn't enjoy it but waitress was able to comp it off her meal and get her a replacement dish pretty quickly. we will definitely be coming back! read more

I attended a bachelorette party dinner at Verbena recently and it was a fun excuse to check this place out since it's been on my radar for quite some time. The first thing to note here is that Verbena is located inside the hotel at Meadowbrook and it's gorgeous. The hotel is picturesque, and the restaurant is no different. It's elegant, vibey in an upscale way, and has that kind of ambiance that makes you feel like it's worth it to spend a little money here - which spoiler alert- you will! Before dinner I do as I always do and surveyed the menu from home to see what sounds good and when I got there I stuck with my choices and ordered two drinks - one that had a tiki flair, and after their spin on an old fashioned. For dinner I chose their cauliflower entree. We will start with the drinks: no notes. I forget the names of what I had but the tiki inspired one had rum and it was honestly one of the better rum drinks I've had in some time. It was sweet but not overpowering and the rum was perfectly complimented. It was so good I had to switch drinks for round two because I knew I'd drink another one of these too fast! Thir riff on an old fashioned was excellent as well. These are honestly my barometer for a bartender as I make them at home all the time and I enjoy seeing how others take a classic and elevate it at a place like this. I knew it would be good when they asked if I wanted rye or bourbon, which was a thoughtful question. I went with bourbon and it was also excellent. Not too sweet and perfectly sippable. Now I'm going to get into why I'm rating it 4/5 and not 5/5 because it honestly could be 5/5. To be fair to Verbena I think this could be just due to the group I was with so I'll return sometime and see if I feel differently, but here is my one critique: the price point and the entree size. I eat out at nice places a fair amount and while I don't make it a regular occurance to pay $30+ for an entree, I do when I got out and I was planning on dropping some money here. What wasn't clear to me is that at dinner I think the set up here is meant for you to order a salad and then an entree to make a full meal. Or pair an entree with one of their other small plates to begin, sort of like Farina. The difference is when I went to Farina they were very clear about this at the start so our whole table all ordered a starter and then an entree and so forth - yes it was very pricey, but our expectations were set from the start. Now, this might have happened if it wasn't for our group. I was with a younger crowd and they all had been before and they all ordered salads as entrees - I'm not 25 anymore and not afraid to order a real meal (enter face palm here) so I ordered a standard entree and I expected at the price point (especially in the 'burbs) to be a more standard entree size. The cauliflower steak was honestly DIVINE - the flavors were perfect and loved every bite, but it was at the end of the day a $30 singular piece of cauliflower with some sauce and while it was great, I left hungry and even texted my husband that after spending around 80 dollars here I was going to probably pick up taco bell after this party was over. Now, again I'm going to reiterate that I was here with a group and the server did an excellent job of trying to meet everyone where they were at and I am probably 10 years older than most at the table so my expectations and life experience is just different. Verbena is an awesome spot and on my way home I was thinking about how I need to return for a happy hour to get more of those great drinks and try it out again. the tl;dr of this is if you go for dinner I'd order a salad and and entree - or ask them about how to best set up your meal. Love this place!!! The patio is such a good vibe, will be returning on a sunny day to enjoy that! To start off, we got the baked goat cheese w/orange marmalade & the bang bang shrimp. PHENOMENAL! Literally my sharpie part of the meal, they were sooo delish. My trout was good with a very mild flavor, but the accompaniments for the dish were tasty. My drink was a very interesting mix of tequila, green chile vodka, strawberry basil, & egg white. I was skeptical but it actually was pretty good and balanced! When you walk in the vibes in here are absolutely immaculate. The space is so curated and thoughtfully decorated. I really want to stay at this hotel now! That said the food definitely kept the sea high class vibes. I had the Milanesa. Honestly, no notes. I would get it again. I almost went four stars because the service was slow though. Everyone was kind the manager even stopped by to ask how we were doing. It was just slow no other way to put it. I went on a weekday in the middle of the day. I think it was a Thursday. It wasn't too busy not every table was full, but still, I found my drink empty a few times and our food took quite a while to come out. I've eaten lunch here twice with my friend. It's truly a beautiful restaurant. Both times we visited, it took a long time for our server to come to our table. The first time both servers thought it was the other's table. We tried the oysters on our first visit and really liked them. My friend got the beet salad, which was good, but small. I got the quiche and liked it. On the next visit, we started with the bang bang shrimp and avocado toast, which we liked, but weren't amazed by. My friend got the Chopped Italian salad with chicken and I got the wedge with chicken. It was tasty. I'd definitely be willing to give it a try again. Went to Verbena for lunch on a weekday with friends and our toddlers. The weather was beautiful so we sat outside with a view of the water and the beautiful area behind the hotel. I order the bread rolls, clam chowder, and the clam and linguine pasta. The rolls were great and warm. Great for toddlers. The clamp chowder was inhaled by my two toddlers so I didn't even get to taste it. The clamp and linguine was beautiful but too salty...my only complaint. The service was A+. I forgot the servers name, however he has a million nieces and nephews so he was super attentive to out table full of toddlers. He brought out the food quickly and as they were ready. He brought extra plates and silverware without us even asking. Honestly one of the best experiences I've had with a server. I was very impressed. Wedge salad, delicious and a great bunch of tomatoes and bacon cubes, with 3 slices of lettuce so you don't have to cut them as much. Royale w cheese (single or double) very tasty smash burger! The meat had a grilled crust to it, cheese melted perfectly, pickle slices, and NO tomato or lettuce kept it simple and almost divine as a burger..... Had an incredible birthday lunch at Verbena! The restaurant is beautifully decorated and very clean, setting the tone for an elegant, yet fairly casual meal! It wasn't too noisy on a slow Monday and yet not awkwardly silent. Our server, who was also the bartender, was very knowledgeable on the drinks as well as the food, citing the local and staff favorites! We started off with the bang bang shrimp, which was delicious! The saucy was creamy and not spicy at all. The shrimp still had its crunch while covered in sauce. It's a perfect starter for two people, I'd recommend it! The crab cake was delicious as well! Large chunks of crab and little capers mixed in for a little acidity but nothing to hide that this is all real crab. Perfectly complemented by a light broccoli salad! The chicken Milanese was very well cooked. It's always a disappointment when you get dry chicken but this was made to perfection. Came here for a work dinner, and left very impressed. Also, such a beautiful location close to the park. It was hard deciding what I wanted because it all looked good, but went with the wedge salad as well as the salmon for my main. Wow, the wedge salad was so good and I ate every bite of it. The salmon dish was also very good, served with side of parsnip puree. Don't forget to get the Parker house rolls as they were amazing! What a gorgeous restaurant! Had the honor of attending a friend's birthday celebration at Verbena, and it was great. We were seated in a private room with plenty of natural lighting and the sun shining in beautifully. The room was nicely air conditioned and didn't feel hot at all. Service was also top notch. FYI, the restaurant is connected to the hotel where the main bathroom is shared. On to the food and drinks. Started with a welcome drink of choice, and I got the Pebblebrook, which was refreshing, fruity, and crisp. It had seasonal fruit, herb syrup, & soda water. 5/5 Main entrée was the linguini & clams. Very eye-catching presentation that made me look forward to the dish. Taste itself was good, the sauce was delicious, and there was a good amount of clams. However, this dish was extremely salty, and there was some grittiness in the clams. It's hard not to find gritty/sandy clams. 3/5 For dessert I had the crème brûlée. I typically don't like crème brûlée, but this one I would come back for. Really nicely caramelized, crunchy top layer with a smooth and creamy custard topped with fresh fruit. 5/5 Overall, the restaurant is beautiful both in terms of it interior and exterior. This restaurant is primarily a seafood restaurant everything was tasty - super disappointed that I didn't get photos of our food. We ordered the oysters at $4 each. They were good. Came with a cute little dropper of flavoring which was a mixture of garlic, oil and something sweet. It was a nice compliment to the otherwise plain oysters. We got the Shrimp appetizer. Also tasty - would recommend it. I got the salmon as well. Happy with it. All this to say I'm not a real huge fan of seafood so this review should mean a little something. I went to Verbena for lunch last week with some reservations from previous experience--and enjoyed it so much I returned 2 days later. The initial hesitation was due to an earlier dinner there that I felt was overpriced for very ordinary although nice food. My overwhelmingly positive lunch experience was due to the excellent service provided by our server, Amy; the quiet great place for two old friends to catch up ith out being rushed out the door. I'll add Verbena back to my preferred lunch spots and will try once again for dinner. The two meals I had there, potato leek quiche and Chicken Milanese were good. The quiche was fabulous, the chicken too, although the chicken breast was breaded and deep fried which was an unwanted surprise. The pinnacle moment of the meal was just seeing that burger! It tasted as good as it looks. Between the warm pickles that are clearly done in house to the bone marrow Dijon mustard, everything about this burger screams best in Kansas award! I am serious. It was that good. My next fav item was the beef tartare. The minced meat was wonderful and those massive chips were the perfect vehicle to enjoy this. Overall, I really enjoyed everything we ordered. Service was great and the views were amazing. I am so excited to come back and order the burger but only for myself (no sharing). This is 5 out of 5. Verbena, located in The Market at Meadowbrook and attached to the Meadowbrook Inn, is a newer development in Prairie Village. This small, adorable restaurant has a mighty American menu. The cocktail program is small but strong, the food is extremely well prepared, original, and imaginative. Our group of four had excellent cocktails. I had the Black Mission Manhattan (Union Horse reserve bourbon, Averna amaro, mission fig syrup and house bitters) and my wife had the Meadowbrooker (Tom's Town botanical gin, lemon-thyme simple, lemon juice and sparkling wine). The Parker House rolls were warm, fluffy, and delicious. The small plate was a nice sharer and our mains (smoked duck breast and a rabbit pasta dish) were both excellent. Our friends had dessert and we did not, but they said the Mousse Bar was very, very good. We can't wait to come back and explore the menus further! The service here sucks. I have come here a few times and every time the waitresses are rude and no helpful. They asked us to leave because they needed the table, but the entire place was empty. Another time they undercooked my chicken so I sent it back and they still charged me for it. The waitress with the tattoos on here arms is rude and the food was slow and not very good. DO NO RECOMMEND. There are better places in Praire Village to go. read more
