Posole

We did the last Tuesday tasting menu of the season with suggested wine pairings! It was a phenomenal meal with pleasant service- we were sad when it came to an end. I wish they would make their Posole a regular menu item- the flavor was uniquely spicy, and the avocado garnish created the perfect balance to that heat. We will be back!

Very pleasant - came for Father's Day dinner as a celebration and it was a great venue for it. We loved our apps - the smoked duck empanadas were so flavorful, also loved the ravioli with chicken, as well as the mushroom bisque. I enjoyed my short rib, loved the crispness of the onion ring, it offset the savory really nicely. My family enjoyed their lobster pasta, fish, and saffron risotto. The brownie a la mode was warm and gooey and perfect. The doughnuts were light and scrumptious too. I wish the other diners were more diverse, but that's my main critique. The service was very attentive, but not too much so. Would recommend for a lil KC celebration.

TL;DR: Story is good but not memorable (with one exception! I cover that below), and from the food to the decor, the experience is a bit dated. The flavors are familiar for fine dining and easy to like, and the portion sizes are relatively good. If you're okay with that and the location is convenient, then I'd recommend Story. Otherwise, here's where I would go: RECOMMENDATIONS Similar price or slightly more expensive, really special experience: - The Antler Room (intimate, classy, good for date night or dinner with your parents, not good for groups, downtown. All small plate style) - Corvino (larger than The Antler Room, classy, good for date night, can handle groups, downtown. All small plate style) Similar location, not small-plate, better bang for your buck: - Plate (Leawood and Brookside): Good Italian food, slightly more casual than Story but still a place you could wear something nice. - Silo Modern Farmouse (Lenexa): Beautiful venue, downside is you might run into the country club crowd. This is the most formal of these three venues - Gram & Dun (Plaza): Prettier and more modern in menu and style than Story, though I wouldn't consider Gram & Dun to be true fine-dining. Take a look through the menus and see if it's what you're looking for. HIGHLIGHTS If you do decide to check out Story, the best of the menu from the nine dishes I tried were the Lobster Tagliatelle, the Braised Beef Short Ribs, the Doughnuts, and the Lemon Cake. The Tagliatelle was tender, with great seafood notes and not overpowering in any way, while the Braised Beef Short RIbs was well-cooked and fell right off the bone. I liked the passion fruit sauce on the doughnuts. They were served warm and they were fluffy on the inside, would recommend. The Lemon Cake was the dessert I was least anticipating and most surprised by! It ended up being the one dish I really remember and love from Story. The cake is light, accentuating the lemon in a beautifully subtle way. The ice cream pairs so well with this cake, providing a more nuanced, savory take on dessert. This dish was so well-balanced and almost makes me want to go back to Story just to have it again. LETDOWNS Most of the dishes I tried were okay, but the few I would recommend avoiding are the Dark Chocolate Torte and the Smoked Duck Empandas. The Empanadas weren't well-filled (mostly crust) and needed something more for the flavors to meld together, while the Dark Chocolate Torte was extremely sweet and on the dry side.

I can't believe I hadn't ever been to Story before this! We had a pretty early rez (5pm Sunday) so arrived with the place to ourselves, but by 7pm it was packed. And rightfully so. The pear goat cheese salad and duck empanadas were fantastic. Dishes where you can taste every individual unique flavor (and the candied nuts are crushed small so they don't just take over everything). I ordered the lobster and shiitake tagliatelle as my entree and I would have licked the plate if it would have seemed appropriate. All 3 plates were so delicately done and absolutely delicious. I really liked Brian's entree too: beef short rib is apparently a staple on their menu and I can see why. The meat is perfection from the sauce to the tenderness. The gnocchi were a little tighter than I expected (more like spaetzle) but the perfect bite was a little of the crispy onion ring, a little of the flake-apart beef, and a mini gnocchi. We got fries to start and demolished them, though they were just a tiny bit over salted. The aioli is the key. I liked the lemon cake but LOVED the carrot cake with mascarpone buttercream and crunchy salty bits on top. Pair with good cocktails and a great wine list and we were happy diners.

This was middle of the road for me! I've heard so many amazing things, so I may have just caught them on an off night. The space itself is nice and open, and the bar has a nice design to it. We were sat in the bar section which felt very separated from the regular dining area. I said dining area in my reservation so not sure what happened there. The food we ordered was all incredibly bland. We started with the empanadas. And the stuffing to shell ratio was off. It was also very oily. We went on a Thursday specifically to try the burger, and left feeling very disappointed the bun was an odd bread? Not really a true bun, and the burger itself only tasted like char despite having different sauces. The mahi mahi was also terribly under seasoned, but overall cooked well. I'm not sure if we'd go back given the price point and our overall experience

We went to Story for valentine's day and decided to try the special valentine's day tasting menu and accompanied wine pairings. I loved the modern decor that kept the ambiance classy and sleek, while adding some fun color. Story is the perfect setting for a date or even a professional business meeting. Everything on the tasting menu was fabulous and left us wanting a few more bites of each! My favorite was the lobster ravioli. It consisted of only one piece of ravioli noodle, however it was packed with lobster and flavor. The wine pairings matched all dishes beautifully. I love that Story constantly changes their menu based on what is in season and also, rotates their regular menu based on day of the week- meaning there's always something new to try! I definitely will be back and am excited to try more of what Story has to offer!

Had my usual soft shell crab as it was the last weekend on the menu. Also had the Green Salad - fresh greens, tarragon, mint and pistachios. And dessert was the peach tart - all excellent !

Cold seafood risotto
Jae L.

The worst food and dining experience ever !! First the food- I want to mention that the Chef is really good at plating his food, because by looking at the picture, the food looks really great, but the taste is NOT 1. saffron seafood risotto - individual seafood pieces, or either way too salty/not salty and COLD! You can tell the seafood pieces were not cooked properly because while I was eating my risotto, I can see the juice coming out of it and making my risotto watery YUCK - worst of all, I found a hair!! 2.beef short ribs with gnocchi- the gnocchi was good but the beef short rib was terrible. You can totally tell that beef was cooked at least 12 hours ahead and that's alarming because we were there as soon as the restaurant opened. It was dry and tasteless. It tasted like old beef. 3. Empanadas we're OK to text her was good but the inside meet in the ganache was not to my taste maybe it's because I like the original traditional flavors. Secondly, I would like to mention the services- we were in there with our toddler as soon as the restaurant opened because we didn't want to disturb other guests and we wanted to scope out a good place to celebrate our father's 60th birthday. Everything was OK until I found a hair in my food !!!! the server audaciously decided to say that it's probably because we had a little tiny horse stuffed animal on the table, first of all, the tiny stuffed animal was not even near my food, second of all that hair definitely did not belong to the stuffed animal because it looked like a human hair (like an arm hair) and I can't believe their attitude of me finding a hair was just to take my food away. Later on when I complained about whether I'm going to get my food back ?! is when they decided to ask me if I want anything else - I had more than half of my food left on the plate when they took my plate away so I left the restaurant HUNGRY They try to make me feel better by giving the desert for free as if they were doing me a favor. Dessert was terrible. It was too sweet and the attitude, and how they offered me to give me a Dessert for my compensation, made it taste even WORSE The ambience was weird. They have a very modern decor with country music playing in the background. All in all, I will never be back in this restaurant. Honestly, I could maybe look over the bad food, but the attitude of the servers and manager completely offended me. This was the first time me spending over $100 for a meal and leaving the restaurant hungry.

It has been many years since our first visit to Story. Not sure why we haven't visited since then, but Kansas City Restaurant Week gave us a reason to get reacquainted. We love to support local restaurants like Story. You can read on their website about Chef/Owner Carl Thorne-Thomsen and his culinary experience. You'll also learn about the naming of the restaurant. When I made my reservation, they only had high top seating available. But when we arrived, they were able to seat us in the main dining room for 90 minutes. Beyond accommodating us in more comfortable seating, we really appreciated the plexiglass dividers separating the tables. Story's interior décor is very contemporary. Lars was our server and he was fantastic. He had worked at the restaurant several years ago and returned during the pandemic. We started with some delicious cocktails: the Modern Revival and the Hemmingway. The Modern Revival is made with Tom's Town Gin, aperol, green chartreuse, grapefruit and lime. It was so refreshing, I ordered it two more times. Ordering from the Restaurant Week menu, we both tried the Butternut Squash Bisque. It was rich and decadent. My wife loved the Braised Beef Short Ribs with potato gnocchi and onion rings. It was super tender and tasty. I ordered the Wild Salmon with butternut squash. Lars told me it was a signature and it was. For dessert, we both ordered the Doughnuts with vanilla pastry cream and salted caramel. What a fun way to end a great evening. We look forward to a return visit soon.

Excellent business dinner at Story. Wonderful evening - atmosphere is upscale ish and service is done well. The sourdough adjacent bread (can't remember the name! ) was out of this world and I'm already craving it. The ravioli app melted in my mouth as did the short rib. It was so rich but the highlight of the dish were the gnocchi- seared and pillowy with a delicious pan sauce. Will be back!

I attended a bachelorette party dinner at Verbena recently and it was a fun excuse to check this…read moreplace out since it's been on my radar for quite some time. The first thing to note here is that Verbena is located inside the hotel at Meadowbrook and it's gorgeous. The hotel is picturesque, and the restaurant is no different. It's elegant, vibey in an upscale way, and has that kind of ambiance that makes you feel like it's worth it to spend a little money here - which spoiler alert- you will! Before dinner I do as I always do and surveyed the menu from home to see what sounds good and when I got there I stuck with my choices and ordered two drinks - one that had a tiki flair, and after their spin on an old fashioned. For dinner I chose their cauliflower entree. We will start with the drinks: no notes. I forget the names of what I had but the tiki inspired one had rum and it was honestly one of the better rum drinks I've had in some time. It was sweet but not overpowering and the rum was perfectly complimented. It was so good I had to switch drinks for round two because I knew I'd drink another one of these too fast! Thir riff on an old fashioned was excellent as well. These are honestly my barometer for a bartender as I make them at home all the time and I enjoy seeing how others take a classic and elevate it at a place like this. I knew it would be good when they asked if I wanted rye or bourbon, which was a thoughtful question. I went with bourbon and it was also excellent. Not too sweet and perfectly sippable. Now I'm going to get into why I'm rating it 4/5 and not 5/5 because it honestly could be 5/5. To be fair to Verbena I think this could be just due to the group I was with so I'll return sometime and see if I feel differently, but here is my one critique: the price point and the entree size. I eat out at nice places a fair amount and while I don't make it a regular occurance to pay $30+ for an entree, I do when I got out and I was planning on dropping some money here. What wasn't clear to me is that at dinner I think the set up here is meant for you to order a salad and then an entree to make a full meal. Or pair an entree with one of their other small plates to begin, sort of like Farina. The difference is when I went to Farina they were very clear about this at the start so our whole table all ordered a starter and then an entree and so forth - yes it was very pricey, but our expectations were set from the start. Now, this might have happened if it wasn't for our group. I was with a younger crowd and they all had been before and they all ordered salads as entrees - I'm not 25 anymore and not afraid to order a real meal (enter face palm here) so I ordered a standard entree and I expected at the price point (especially in the 'burbs) to be a more standard entree size. The cauliflower steak was honestly DIVINE - the flavors were perfect and loved every bite, but it was at the end of the day a $30 singular piece of cauliflower with some sauce and while it was great, I left hungry and even texted my husband that after spending around 80 dollars here I was going to probably pick up taco bell after this party was over. Now, again I'm going to reiterate that I was here with a group and the server did an excellent job of trying to meet everyone where they were at and I am probably 10 years older than most at the table so my expectations and life experience is just different. Verbena is an awesome spot and on my way home I was thinking about how I need to return for a happy hour to get more of those great drinks and try it out again. the tl;dr of this is if you go for dinner I'd order a salad and and entree - or ask them about how to best set up your meal. Plan to spend some money, and have fun. It's a really elegant spot in JOCO.

It's a lovely restaurant. It seems a bit out of the way with mostly corporate buildings around. The restaurant has a nice modern aesthetic. I like the purple hyacinths hanging from the ceiling in one area. It was very steady for an off time in the afternoon. First, our server Olivia was amazing! Very attentive and we were extra needy this day so I really appreciate her patience. We even dropped food on the floor. Oops! She was so nice about it and cleaned it up immediately. We had customizations and extra requests. No problem for her! She went above and beyond. I hope she sees this because she was such a joy! The food was also very good. We started with the biscuits and one peach compote and one blueberry. Both were yummy. They were traditional drop biscuits and I love a good biscuit! We also had an order of fried green tomatoes on goat cheese grits. You get 4 very large slices. I could only eat one. The grits were yummy but there were not enough of them in relation to the friend green tomatoes. They were also encased by a sauce. I'm guessing a remoulade. I don't really care for remoulade sauce so I'd have removed it had I known it came with the dish. It really overpowered the goat cheese taste in the grits. The tomatoes were very al dente and I would have preferred them cooked a bit more. The dish was still good but my least favorite and I would normally love anything with those ingredients and fried green tomatoes are a favorite so the remoulade (or whatever it was) sauce was a real problem for me. I would definitely get them again without the sauce because they are great otherwise. But that sauce just overpowers every other flavor! I got the chicken tender dinner and others in my party got the bone in fried chicken. Everyone liked their chicken. The tenders were a big size. 4 of them but I hit 2 meals out of them. Everyone liked the Parmesan rosemary potatoes. I really liked the bacon green beans. The only side we weren't impressed with was the Mac and cheese unfortunately. The cheese was not good. We got coffees and a chai. All of them were very good. A bit pricey for the amount you get though. Even with the smaller complaints, I'd still give th a 5 because of the outstanding service and the dishes were overall very good and large portions. We will definitely return and I hope to try out a breakfast item next visit!

Decent option for dinner…read more I stopped by earlier this week on my first night in town, and sat at the end of the bar. The bartender served me a Guinness (on tap, of course!) and then recommended the Monday Steak Night special ($60) - a prix fixe option which included a salad plus one of four types of steak, sides, and dessert. I opted for the house salad (with sherry vinaigrette dressing), the hangar steak (he was selling it hard!), sautéed green beans, and lemon meringue pie. The house salad was superb, with delicious chunks of goat cheese! I also enjoyed the sautéed green beans, loaded with sliced almonds and fresh garlic. The hangar steak was probably the most disappointing, and solely responsible for this review not earning 5 stars. I took half of it to go along with half of the green beans. The lemon meringue pie looked delicious but I could not eat another bite, so that also went into a to-go container. Back in my hotel room that night, working late as I was jet lagged, I ate that pie. OMG! PURE HEAVEN!! And the main reason this review earned 4 stars! Will be back for the salad and green beans and pie! And some Guinness on tap, of course!!

The space was nice and clean, but unfortunately, the service and the "famous" main course didn't quite deliver a stellar performance. Our table was split--some wanted dinner, some wanted dessert. This apparently threw our waiter into a state of deep existential confusion. The Food: I ordered their "famous" fried chicken, customizing it to three thighs (which came with homemade pickles and a fantastic ham gravy). For $24, it wasn't bad, but it's definitely not "famous" for flavor--maybe just famous for the price tag. Honestly, I could have filled up at Popeyes for a fraction of the cost. Surprisingly, the absolute star of my meal was the side of sautéed mushrooms. It came with little pearl onions, shallots, and green peas. I topped it with some of my friend's arugula to make it fancy, and it was delicious. The Service (or lack thereof): Here's where it went downhill. The dessert order became a saga. Those who ordered sweets expected them to arrive with the mains, but we had to ask several times just to get them toward the end of the meal. By the end, our waiter seemed completely frustrated with our existence. He aggressively boxed up the remaining desserts and semi-forcefully shoved the credit card machine into our faces to shuffle us out the door. Great mushrooms, aggressive math at the end. Proceed with caution.

We were seated on time at a table next to the bar-side of the dining room. Speaking of the dining room, it's a nice, if standard size for a strip-mall space, but I really appreciated that the tables were not stacked on top of each other, as seems to be the case at more and more places these days. It felt like there might be some chance of our entire conversation not being completely overheard by our neighbors, which was nice for a change! Our waitress was fantastic! She walked us through the menu, the restaurant's approach to cooking and seasonality, some of her faves, and made wonderful recommendations! We decided to split a few small plates, which was a great approach! We got to try about 1/3 of the small plate menu, and loved it all! It was all great, but the Black Cardamom Burnt Ends are NOT to be missed! It made my cardamom-loving, Midwest soul very, very happy indeed! The space is a really nice size - not massive or overwhelming - and with the shades drawn down (to seal out the late afternoon sun, thank goodness!) and dim lighting, the mood vibes were solid for a romantic anniversary dinner! The other ambiance item of note is that the restroom corridor smelled absolutely fantastic! Upon investigation, it was due to a burning candle from a lovely local-KC company that was custom made for the restaurant! Yes, they're for sale, and yes, we picked up two! While everything was lovely and the food was very good, you're definitely paying a high price for it. Not that it's not deserved, but the "value" feels aren't necessarily "off the charts", by any means. And that is really my only critique, if there is any at all!
