The food at Chase's Daily lives up to its reputation. My semolina French toast with real maple syrup was so good I couldn't suppress my moans and the breakfast burrito with scrambled tofu and corn tortillas was a perfect protein-packed gluten-free vegetarian brunch option, something incredibly hard to come by at restaurants in these parts. My partner's huevos rancheros were...interesting...but good.
We've also tried the french toast with sesame seed bread, and it's almost as incredible as the semolina. And an egg sandwich with chard on sesame seed bread. The chard didn't really work for my partner's palette, but the meal was still hearty and the bread divine.
At our last visit, we also took home a loaf of rosemary polenta bread and it was scrumptious.
The service at Chase's is a bit hit or miss. The first time we visited, the service was abysmal. Despite there being three waitstaff on the floor and a third of the tables empty, we stood at the Wait to be Seated sign alone for almost ten minutes, without any acknowledgment from anyone. The servers just kept averting their eyes and taking care of other things. A host or hostess would have made a big difference.
When we were finally seated, we were given the worst, most bitter undrinkable coffee I've ever had in my life. It took 45 minutes for our breakfast to be served to us and in that time, our waitress never checked on us, never offered us more coffee, never apologized for or explained the delay, never asked if we needed anything. Every single other person in the restaurant, including *ten* people who ordered after us got their meals and most had finished and paid their checks by the time our food arrived--missing our side of toast (although that did appear on the bill).
The waitress was nice enough, but really spacey and better suited to working in a head shop or maybe taking tickets at a movie theater. She totally reminded us of Ursula.
We went back, of course, because the food is beyond belief and the location is lovely. On our second visit, we came prepared. We brought the paper to pass the time while we waited, and we bought a delicious (although sort of burnt) muffin and some of the bitter coffee to help stave off hunger while we waited for our table--and then our meal.
This time, there was a host who was totally on top of things. He took our names and told us how long the wait would be, and once we were seated, we were able to order promptly. The wait for our food was long, but we were well-looked-after while we waited. (Lots of offers for the bad coffee and a friendly server.)
We'll go back (and back and back) because the food is so *tremendously* good and because the atmosphere is comfortable and happy, and because we love what Chase's Daily is doing, but we will always, at least for brunch, lament the coffee, and either buy or bring a snack, and the paper. Armed with these things, Chase's becomes the perfect spot for brunch. read more
