I went for lunch today and it was wonderful. I highly recommend the enchiladas, and my friend raved about the curried egg salad sandwich. The baked goods are awesome. This is by far one the best vegetarian resto i have ever been to! We drive over an hour to go there and also to experience Belfast, a very cool vibe town. The wait staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu and food. Today we had a side of happy rich, a type of broccoli rabe without the bitterness, a warm spinach salad and a Michelin Swiss leek omelette. WOW. all super delish. To top it off, we purchased a bottle of their smoked habenero hot sauce! Best place in the down east region unless you insist on meat with your meal. UPDATE: as disappointed as we were when they made the change to counter service, we were back again after a year and happen to stop in around late afternoon so it wasn't very crowded. All we wanted was the pizza and wow, it paid off. It was absolutely incredible!!!! Probably some of the best I've ever had and I'm including NYC and NJ pizza (that's saying a lot). This has always been THE place to eat in Belfast. I've been coming here for years when we visit Maine. Needless to say, I was shocked and saddened to see that they have totally ruined their approach to serving lunch. They used to have an amazing menu and incredible food. Now it's stand in line, order a cold sandwhich or pre prepared counter salad and sit at massive utilitarian tables shoved together. They are clearly going for volume and trying to push a lot of hot dog thru a straw for the lunch crowd. Forget lunch here. Try the Sunday brunch which is still incredible. And maybe try them for dinner which I suspect will be much like lunch was once upon a time. This place used to be perfection and I am sooo sad to see what they have decided to make it now. read more

I wish I could give the food at this place six stars. I had a vegan spicy tofu sandwich that was literally the best tasting sandwich I have ever had in my life, meat sandwiches included. Taste aside, I also admired the seemingly superb quality of the ingredients. The interior is quite pleasant as well. It's a bit loud, as it was full to capacity, and voices tended to echo in the big open space. But it's bright and airy feeling, and there's a small farmers market full of fresh unique fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The long wait for lunch was a bit of a bummer, but it was absolutely worth it. If you have ever questioned whether vegetarian food can be delicious, this place might just make your doubts disappear for good. read more

Fantastic food, produce, and coffee. Would recommend to anyone asking for an essential place to stop in Belfast.

Pros: delicious, fresh food; friendly staff; bright, airy dining room; and a welcome oasis for a vegetarian in a seafood-centric town. Also, a "farmers market" area at the back of the restaurant that is truly a feast for the senses. Cons: very slow service; hair in food. I had the omelet with swiss chard and feta -- scrumptious -- and my husband had the egg salad sandwich, which he loved. We shared a side order of wonderful greens sauteed in olive oil - tasted just like broccoli rabe, but they call them "happy rich," something I've never heard of before. I drank a homemade iced tea - a blend of Eary Gray and Peppermint, delicious - and he had what he described as the best iced mocha of his life (not a big surprise, since they use Porto Rico coffee from NYC - our personal favorite!). The farmers market in back was amazing - beautiful produce artfully displayed and reasonably priced. We got heaping handfuls of basil and cilantro; a big bag of heirloom cherry tomatoes; a couple pounds of mesclun; a pound of carrots; and a big head of purple cauliflower, for about $25. Now, the negatives... the food took about half an hour to come. We were STARVING. I wouldn't at all say this is a reason not to visit Chase's, but I'd advise against coming with an enormous appetite, as we did. Expect to wait a while. There's a communal stack of newspaper if it's morning and you don't feel like talking :) But...the hair. My husband found one in each half of his sandwich, another in our side dish, and one in my omelet. EW. We overlooked the 1st one b/c we were so hungry, and then by the time we found the others we'd eaten enough that we felt like it was too late to send anything back... but we were pretty grossed out. We said something to our waitress and she was mortified (I think her jaw literally dropped), which gives me hope that this is a rare occurrence. And they were very nice about it, comping the omelet, which was the most expensive item we'd ordered. Overall, a great experience - I just hope the hair thing was a fluke. (P.S. They only serve dinner on Fridays, and it seems like a place where there's often a line... we were seated immediately at 12:30 on a Saturday in August, but a line definitely formed over the next hour. As far as vegetarian fare goes, Chase's offers a pretty awesome punch of flavors to suit even THIS picky carnivore's meat-lusting persuasion. My co-diner and I ordered two dishes and split them, as we are wont to do. The braised fennel pizza was astoundingly good, even of it came with sliced kalamata olives--and I didn't remember reading that on the menu. (Kalamata-haters everywhere, beware: the olives are scattered atop almost every dish served here.) The thin crust was prettying done to thin-crust perfection, and the fennel-cheese combo was an ingenious one. The size? A little bigger than a dinner plate; small but satisfying. Our other dish was the Vietnamese banh mi. This one was kind of OMG GOOD! (without the kalamatas: score!). The bread was a crusty, toasted white bread, loaded with spicy pickled vegetables. I'm not a big spice hound, but this wasn't TOO too spicy. I wouldn't have wanted it any hotter--but luckily the waitress kept refilling out water glasses. I would happily return for repeat meals.--Hey, maybe I'm even learning to like kalamata olives?! *Check out the cute produce market in the back: locally sourced, and some REALLY beautiful options. I ordered the tofu banh mi, which was overwhelmingly delicious. The tofu was marinated and cooked to perfection, and it was also topped with fresh, crunchy veggies and herbs. The bread was also great, and all the ingredients were so fresh and complemented each other perfectly. One of the best sandwiches I've had in recent memory. It was served with a slaw, which was also amazing. The greens were crisp and flavorful, topped off with a delightful vinaigrette and sesame seeds. There were also two or three luscious, perfectly-cooked beet chunks on top. The menu is a bit pricey (I think it was $13 for the banh mi + accompanying slaw), but you're getting great quality food. There is also a cool farmstand-ish setup in the back. We got some Chinese broccoli (suiho) to go, and it was fantastic. read more

Vegetarian, yup, and amazing. This place is great, they own their own farm, it doesn't get any more local than that. Chances are a member of the Chase family is taking your order or searing your or filling your water glass. If you can get there for a Friday night dinner you should make that happen. My wife and I plan our vacations around it. The breakfast is wonderful as well, especially the blueberry pancakes. But the highlight of all is the farm market at the back of the restaurant. I've never seen more beautiful produce, I wish I could take it all home. Their baked goods are also spectacular. I could eat their pear/almond muffin everyday and never get sick of it. So if you need meat to call it a meal you're not going to be happy but if you understand what it takes to highlight vegetables and not overpower them, you're going to love this place. read more

We really wanted to love Chase's Daily. It's got a lot going for it. Great idea, great ethos, great space. Love the farm to fork idea. Unfortunately the food and service in the restaurant fell very short. We arrived at lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was pretty busy but it wasn't that busy. The primary disappointment was the food. Both of our dishes were uninspired to say the least. Our appetizer was a crostini with white beans and fresh tomatoes. The tomatoes were delicious and the bread was ok but the white beans were a flavorless, chalky lump. We also had a burrito - it was a little better but definitely lacked the proper seasoning and didn't seam to be well thought out. The service was very inattentive. Failure to greet multiple guests resulted in a big mix up on a seating list that no one knew about. A woman in front of us was seated without the other 3 people in her party of four (who didn't arrive to order until after we finished our meal). Slow is fine but forgetting specific requests multiple times after food has arrived is another. Chase's daily has a lot of potential. We'll be back in the hopes that we just hit a bad day. I hope it's better next time. I suspect there are better things on the menu. I bet the salads are great. It's definitely a welcome respite from the fried seafood stalls. Also, the farmers market vegetables in the back were great and we had a good molasses cookie. read more

This is a nice little shop in the center of town. My host recommended it to me while I was in Belfast. I just stopped by for a quick bite in the morning. All I had was a coffee and a blueberry muffin (both great, by the way) with the intention of taking it to go but I enjoyed the atmosphere in this cafe so I stayed in to eat. The brick wall is a very nice touch and it gets plenty of sunlight with its glass frontage so it's a pretty good way to start your morning. The highlight of this place is that you can buy produce here on certain days. It wasn't happening while I was here but since I just happened to be here during vacation I wasn't going to buy anything anyway. But it seems like a local craze here so if you're in the area for more than a night it would be worth checking out. read more

The food here is vegetarian, which for me and my partner is GREAT when in a land of meat restaurants. The menu is regular, with a couple of changing specials, usually around the pizza and a variety of daily soups. They own their own gardens that source their organic produce, much of which is sold in the back end of their shop. It's a beautiful shop, in a renovated old Victorian era building with tin ceilings. I highly recommend the Thai Green Curry Fried Rice with veggies and tofu, one of my personal faves. Yes, the wait can be long to sit, but they're getting better and it's because it's always busy at lunch. Yes, it can take a long time to get served. That's a really unpredictable facet of Chace's, and I wish it would get better at it. I have never, ever witnessed or experienced waitstaff being rude, like a previous reviewer complained about. They have really odd hours - it's T - Sun, 11-2 for lunch (or is it 3?), and dinner only on Friday nights. The dinner costs are too high, imho, for the food. The menu is different from the daily menu. nevertheless, I highly recommend the restaurant. We go all the time. read more

They work extremely hard as do the wait staff, and offer up a superb vegetarian experience. (If you aren't local, you COULD ask to see a menu before sitting down) I meet a friend here for lunch every month without fail. He eats here 2-3 times a month. Yet no one is special and everyone waits his turn, though more than once we have heard visitors from out of state complain that "tourists should be served first!" I was NOT expecting to find a place like this in Belfast. It was a pleasant surprise. We had a peanut-based soup, tacos, and some sort of egg dish. The food does take a LONG time to come out--around an hour for us--so don't come here if you're in a hurry. But the wait is worth it. We stopped in here for dinner on a Sunday night. The place was supposed to be closed but they were doing a benefit dinner for a local soup kitchen. The food they prepared was free - just leave a donation of whatever you can afford. And that is the vibe of this place. As others have mentioned Chase's is in a single large 30 ft ceiling exposed brick walled room with a semi-open kitchen and a few bar stools. For the benefit dinner we didn't get to eat anything off the menu but judging by the quality of what they did prepare, the menu is likely excellent. Roasted winter vegetables, three kinds of soup, slaw, kale, biscuits. It was all just so damn good. We came from Camden just to eat at this place and it was well worth it. read more

We went for lunch in the early afternoon yesterday. The food was very well made, and tasted good as well. However, there was nothing that indicated it was purely a vegetarian restaurant before receiving the menu when we sat down, which I don't mind vegetarian, I just to have an idea of what I'm getting before I sit down. The service staff seemed a little scattered, there was no clear waiting area, nor a host/hostess to great us as we came in. It made myself and the rest fo the group feel a little out of place as we waited really close to diners as we stood waiting just to get our name in. This weekend was our first visit since last September's 2-star experience, and they won me (and my wife, and mother-in-law) back. (My 4-year-old loves it no matter what.) Saturday of Labor Day weekend, we showed up just ahead of the lunch rush and were seated immediately. EXTREMELY friendly and knowledgeable waiter shows up and takes drink orders. We order soups and entrees, and the soups come out pretty quickly. A spicy dal soup was exquisite, as was the gazpacho. Then, to my amazement and eternal happiness, the lunches came out not too long after the soups had been cleared! Oh, and they were fantastic! (Tofu curry fried rice; black beans and rice; soft tacos.) All four of us joined the Clean Plate Club. Because it was a day of miracles and wonders, the menu had a bunch of new stuff on it, too. Dropped by in Belfast on the way to Bar Harbor. We met up with my sister-in-law. Even though it was a weekday and past 1:30, we still had to wait half an hour. While we were waiting to be seated, we looked around their veggie market in the back. Only when we sat down t order our food, did I realize that it was a vegetarian restaurant. Now I am a BIG MEAT LOVER. The only meal that I eat without meat is breakfast. But I was really pleasantly surprised. Their food had this inexplicably elegant flavor to it. Maybe it's the fresh homegrown veggies they use. I thoroughly enjoyed their food. It was quite a pleasant surprise to see such a restaurant in Maine. They could make some improvements 1. The waiting area. As we waited to be seated, we were trying not to get in the way of other people going to and from the bathroom and the veggie store in the back. 2. The service. The waitress who waited on us made us feel rushed. Instead of trying to explain and making suggestions, when orders didn't roll off our mouth, she asked if we needed more time. Yummy breakfast burritos filled with things like potatoes, kale, tofu, cheddar, and more leave me sated every time. And the irresistible bakery gets me on the way out - cherry chocolate chip cookies, fruit tarts, scones, etc. All top notch. This is a real farm restaurant right in downtown Belfast. We arrived in town looking for coffee so were pointed here. They have good cheeses in the case and amazing looking produce from the farm. It just so happened that the night we were in town (Friday) happened to be the one night each week that they serve dinner, so we made a reservation for dinner. It was amazing. All vegetarian, between the seven of us we were able to order several things off of the limited menu. The middle eastern plate was my choice and i loved it. Several orders of chili rellenos at our table, beer raviolis, amazing salads and a sweet potato appetizer special that was delicious as well. My friends and I excited to see each other ( hadn't seen one another for a few years) met for lunch. While people were standing outside, waiting for tables to open, a couple people were at a table for 6 playing chess; another woman having a phone conversation - both parties had long since eaten and had taken their dishes away. A customer asked for assistance from the employee at the back register and basically ignored. A family of 4 had to stand to eat their lunch, others left. We finally got a table by the chess players. While I am liberal-minded, I don't enjoy having to look at political messages while eating. To my right a large tapestry read "This is Pompeii". And to my left another read "Shame on you monsters". Come on. I want to be able to enjoy a meal with my right-leaning guy, without having our differences being needled and persuasions cajoled. I'm so glad we took the advice of a local who recommended chase's daily. Our brunch was outstanding! There are many choices from giant omlets to pancakes to shakshuka (at least on the day we were there). Anything was very tasty. Service was attentive even if the kitchen was a bit slow. They kept drinks full and were very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Pastries looked outstanding and the cafe sells local items. It's a gorgeous space! We thoroughly enjoyed a lunch of Avocado/Cucumber soup, spicy Fried Rice with Vegetables and more. This is excellently done vegetarian - not meat dishes without the meat, not dishes trying to pretend to have meat, but wonderful amalgamations of fresh, flavorful, filling fare.
