The food here is excellent. I have never had a bad meal. The decor is lovely. It's stone, dark wood, and a beautiful fountain in the middle of the restaurant. You get the feeling it is very lux, but the prices are quite reasonable. I can only give three stars because the service ranges from ok to not very good. I have never been wowed by the service, and I often find myself impatiently waiting for refills, our check, etc. Still, the food is really good and I like coming here. Omg this is a freakin amazing place to eat. Had the best waitress, Kayla. She was amazing.... the food was amazing.. the martinis..everything. Literally. I'm new to Indiana from Arizona and this is the first place I can say I will definitely be returning with my family. Had the savannah peach which is pretty good but the hippy trippy was my favorite. Also had the calamari appetizer, delicious if u like calamari. Had the soup of the day and chefs choice.... My husband had to take off the crust in order to eat it. And the risotto was lumpy and was not the creamy flowing consistency it should have been. Oh, my goodness!!! How have I never been here before? (Living in Broad Ripple isn't a good enough excuse!) A group of 12 of us went for Easter lunch. The service was impeccable. Even with our big party. Refills were done quickly and food all came out in a timely manner. Everyone loved their entrées. But, I have to believe that mine was the very best out of them all. I ordered the filet and it was perfection. My mouth is watering right now just writing this. It came with two sides so I got a Caesar salad and baked potato. This dynamic little gems is located in Avon and if you don't live there it's worth the drive. The restaurant is part of the fantastic restaurant group CRG which owns other places like Bru Burger, Vida, Livery, and Mesh just to name a few. The price are very reasonable for great food and drinks. The ambiance is dark and artful. It has one of the largest bars for those of us who prefer to eat at the bar. We have a Christmas party every year and this year was at Charbonos. We reserved a large table and we're seated promptly as we arrived. We chose appetizers which were delicious! Our main entrees too were very good and not just the ordinary. Drinks were good. Service was excellent. We had lots of laughs and fun. We have been before and will return! I can't say that this place is awful, but I will say that I don't plan on going back. I'm actually surprised at all the glowing reviews. There are some positives about this place, like the bread and oil is a favorite. It's what I remembered the most. But what I also remembered most was the prices. I went with my parents for Memorial Day dinner. I thought, okay... sure. I'll give them another go since I haven't been there in years. I can also say the side salads were great also. But the reason I won't go back is the prices. My entree was tiny and was priced at $23. I couldn't believe it. Why in the world would I pay $23 for an entree that doesn't even fill have the dish it sits on. It was also bland and like it wasn't seasoned. $6 for the side salad. I can definitely find better quality food for less money, so that's what I'll do going forward. read more

If I could give a negative starred review I would do so. A group of us decided to try out Charbonos during Devour so a reservation was made for 6 p.m. on Tuesday 2/3/2021 and confirmed by Charbonos via text. When we arrived we were told we DID NOT have a reservation by a clueless hostess -- even AFTER my friend who made the reservation showed her Charbono had indeed confirmed it (in black and white right on her phone)!!! Instead of offering an apology and making any effort to make things right -- the hostess decided to "punish" us by shunting us off to the bar and forcing us to be seated at the tightest table I've ever seen in a restaurant. With 6 of us seated there we felt like sardines crammed in a can with our boobs literally resting on the tabletop. At this point my friend was done after being chastised for being "snippy" with the unhelpful, unapologetic hostess by her immediate supervisor who my friend also spoke with to try to remedy the situation!! Thankfully there was another manager there, Brandon, who became involved thanks to our waitress' intervention. After a lengthy discussion with him we were moved to a 6 top table...but at that point our evening had already been ruined by extremely poor customer service. The interesting thing is that while in the main dining room I noticed that there was one 8 top table (which we had the confirmed reservation for) and the 6 top table we ended up sitting at...and the only other party that arrived was a group of 6 that was seated at the 8 top table. So it was pretty clear the snotty hostess did have a reservation for the 8 top OURS...and what happened was our two parties simply ended up being seated at each others' tables. On to the food part of my review. After finally escaping from the bar to the dining room I ordered a tequila based martini which arrived with salt on the rim which I hadn't realized would be the case when I placed the order. Since the waitress dropped the drinks and kept moving when I could catch her attention I explained nicely that I couldn't stand salted drinks and asked if I could get a paper napkin to cleanse the rim of salt...in any other establishment the waitress would have immediately whisked away that drink and had it remade -- but not here...I was given three cocktail napkins and left to my own devices! One of our party ordered an appetizer which wasn't served until after the salad course because the waitress obviously forgot to put in the order for it until she was reminded about it. Three of us ordered the pork chop dinner, one the fish, one the filet (for an upcharge) and one the vegetarian option. Two of the three pork chops were overcooked and one was on the verge of being undercooked and although the flavor was great who wants to eat an overcooked piece of pork? The filet was cooked correctly and no mention was made as to how the diners liked the fish and vegetarian options. The final slap in the face was when the waitress came to collect our checks...4 of us had Cunningham loyalty cards and the other 2 weren't interested as they don't patronize any of the included restaurants. One of our party gave another cash to pay her bill (in front of the waitress) so was allowed to credit both checks to her rewards balance even though it was clear each was actually paying their own bill. When I asked for the same courtesy (which has never been an issue in the past no matter the payment method used by the individuals) the waitress looked shocked and loudly exclaimed "I can't do that - do you want me to get fired?"...even though she just watched two others in our party do the exact same thing!!! One final note is that we arrived for dinner at 6:00 p.m. and left the restaurant at 8:30 p.m. which is extremely slow service for a three course dinner when the restaurant is at 50% or less capacity. So if you want to avoid all the drama and other problems, skip Charbonos...there are plenty of other dining choices that serve great food and provide fantastic service who would absolutely love to have your business and would actually appreciate your presence in their establishment vs making you feel like you went three rounds in a boxing ring and made it out alive but just barely. read more

Visited Charbono's on a Saturday evening with some friends. First off, girls, their floor is slick. I had on boots with about a 3-inch heel and could barely get traction. A fat girl in heels in risky enough, but couple that with a slick ass floor and it's a huge liability (pun intended). I can't even remember our appetizers, so I guess that tells you something right there. I had pulled pork w/ mashed potatoes that had jalapenos and corn in them. The pulled pork was good and, turns out, you can't go wrong spiking your mashed potatoes with jalapeno. I felt like the portion size and price were right on. Our table also had ribs with a fruity barbecue sauce. These were deemed to be "okay." We also had a steak that was on the small side for the price. It wasn't anything special, a little overcooked. Lastly, we had a portion of chicken parmesan that was dreadfully overcooked. Pounded thin and cooked to super dark brown is never a good idea. No one really came by to see how we were doing, so we just kind of lived with it. Once a manager or someone who wasn't our server came by, we mentioned it. It wasn't a "I want a free meal because this was overcooked, but I ate it anyway" situation. Just a simple courtesy. A lil, "Hey, just FYI, this chicken parm was a little overcooked." I remember the woman talking to us about "telling chef" about it. She referred to "chef" many times and it made me laugh. I think "cook" might have been a better term here. We weren't exactly enjoying chef driven food. It was okay. We haven't been back, but I'm not saying we'll never go back. Stopped here for lunch as I was visiting friends in the area. They have a good selection of salads, appetizers, sandwiches, and pastas for lunch. Full bar, too. The place wasn't overly crowded as wer were at the main lunchtime (2:15pm or so) and the waitstaff was down to a minimum. However, we were arrested quickly and drink orders taken and delivered. I ordered the Chicago beef sandwich, just dinners ordered salads, appetizers of calamari, and the tuna melt sandwich. The complementary bread with dipping sauce was delicious. The dipping sauce was just enough spicy and vinegary deliciousness to want you to dip another piece. My sandwich was very good. It was delivered comfortably warm and with a generous supply of the giardiniera spicy vegetables. I ordered sweet potato fries as a side. They were hot and crunchy. Very good. The calamari were slightly cool, lukewarm, when delivered. They had the spicy sauce tossed with them, which was unusual but very good. The diner eating the albacore tuna melt was very happy with it, and I will say we all were very happy with the lunches, cleaning up the plates in most cases. The only complaint we had is that the service to receive the food was a bit slow. We thought this was due to minimum staffing in the mid afternoon. Charbonos, Stonecreek, and Boulder Creek are all offspring of the same parent company. There was a time when you could call all of these establishments legitimate fine dining destinations...but I think that's a stretch anymore. I Recently had a weekend dinner with a friend at Charbonos. We ordered entrees, appetizers, dessert, and drinks. All of the food was mediocre. It wasn;t bad - but it was completely boring. Basic Steak, basic mashed potatoes, and basic veggies. Shrimp were overcooked on the appetizer. Salads seemed like a mix. You can get the same food at Applebees for a lesser price. ANd that's really what Charbonos has devolved into - a. dressed up Applebees with a better wine list. Its a shame because these used to be pretty solid restaurants. I think corporate expansion has left Charbonos behind. They need to put some love back into their menu. Get someone running the kitchen with a little passion. read more

After seeing a feature on "Indy Style" showing Charbonos had updated their menu, I took my wife for an early Tuesday night dinner. After being greeted we asked for a table and were seated promptly. Our server was friendly, but admitted she was fairly new. So she made a few "rookie" mistakes, but we were able to keep her from rushing off too quickly. The atmosphere is still rather dark, and although they got rid of those terribly dated artificial vines (yeah!), it looked like most of the decor had remained in place. Not worn, but not necessarily current. Along with our drink order, I placed an order for the Heirloom Tomatoes and Burrata. I had tried something very similar to this appetizer at Sangiovese, so I decided to give the Charbonos version a try. Absolutely delicious! This version had less greens, but made up with them by adding numerous toast crostini. I was able to scoop some burrata onto each slice and place the sliced yellow and red cherry tomatoes on top with a bit of the arugula. The reduction was sweet and savory and went perfectly with the other flavors. Of course, we also got the signature bread and dipping oil that Cunningham Dining Group is known for at their Stone Creek/Boulder Creek restaurants. My wife worked on that while I gobbled the crostini. For entrees, I was having a hard time deciding, but ended up going with the Scallops, with Parmesan Risotto, zucchini, and tasso ham beurre blanc. The risotto was fantastic with enough cheese to add flavor to each bite of the risotto and zucchini. Definitely worth ordering again. My wife opted for the 12 oz NY Strip since Charbonos doesn't carry the deep fried shrimp she gets at the Stone Creek locations. She paired the steak with some delicious green beans (not too crunchy like some places, but not soft and mushy either. What I would consider ideal!) She also ordered the sweet potato fries which were coated with a sweetened cinnamon powder. (She needed a to go box!) Finally, we split a creme brulee which was chilled so the crust was nice a brittle while the creme was smooth. If I could give this a 4 1/2 I would, but since there was a bit of improvement that could be done to update the restaurant and with experience, improvement of the service, I will settle for a 4 star rating. Ok, so. I love local establishments and I support them because I'm a local business owner myself. The ambiance of the place was nice enough... except for the sweltering heat and the swaying of kids menus being used as manual fans. Our waitress was really very good, especially considering the fact that we were resting and sweating bullets. She was running around like crazy and still remained calm and collected. Not so much cool though. The food was ok-ish. Not worth the money that was paid for it to be very honest. All of this could have been swayed by being miserable in our environment. We chose this establishment because my dad was going to have open heart surgery the following Monday and my brother flew in from Hawaii to surprise him. All of this was overshadowed by the heat. Even after complaining to the hostess, our waitress and finally to management - nothing was done. The total bill had to be over $800 and not a dime was comped. I highly doubt I'll be back. Like I said - I love supporting local and I get that sometimes "stuff" happens... but when it does happen, you do you dangdest to make sure you compensate for it in other ways. I don't even think we got an apology. Next time, I'll order my filet and wine bottles from someone who understands how to do business. read more

I visited Charbonos with my wife Saturday night and had a great experience. I made a reservation on OpenTable for 6:00pm, and we were seated immediately upon arriving. After ordering, we were given bread and oil, which was fresh out of the oven. I ordered a cup of the lobster bisque, which was $5 and just so-so, though it did have a decent amount of meat in it. For my entree, I had the Linguini Charbonos, which came with Shrimp, Lobster, and Scallops. It was excellent. After the soup and bread, I took home enough leftovers for lunch the next day. Our service was satisfactory on a pretty busy night. My water glass only saw the bottom once. Will definitely be back. read more

Let me preface this with, I went for lunch. I did however try a LOT of dishes. I started with the dip trio - I LOVE dips and spreads. These unfortunately were bland, and the pita was both stale and slightly burnt. Next I moved on to a Caesar salad, good salad but nothing I have not had at home. Following that I decided to try the burger special of the day, BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger. The BBQ sauce was excellent but there wasn't enough of it. The bacon slices were thick and generous, but that is where the praise ends. The meat was overcooked, and there wasn't much flavor to the burger overall. Last - but never least - the chocolate terrine. I cannot say enough good things about this chocolate amazing-ness. I'm a fan of the Cunningham group of restaurants. We've dined at several of them and have had several 5 star experiences. Even though everything was very good, our latest visit fell just a bit shy of a 5 star review, based on the service. It was just a little "off" in my estimation. Our server was friendly and professional but not especially prompt. My wife had the ahi tuna and pronounced it excellent. I had the Charboli sandwich, which is similar to a Stromboli with a bit of a twist. It was tasty and filling, but not especially creative. The side salad, though, we simply outstanding! Even though I think it falls just a bit shy of the typical Cunningham experience, we'll certainly be back again when we're in Avon. read more

Has been around for quite some time and the food is always great. Expect a fairly classic menu-it doesn't change all that often. They always nail the calamari in this perfect tangy sauce. Their salads are also very good and a good size too. Like other CRG places, expect crossovers like a few burgers from Bru and flatbreads.
