Haven't been to Sal's in a while and they recently renovated, so decided it was the spot for a Friday early evening dinner. Much brighter and very well lit inside now. New tables, seating and new texture on the floor (could be a bit slippery in the past). We started with pepperoni stuffed breadsticks. These were good for breadsticks, but the stuffed part was a little lackluster. Again, good but not great. My dining partner had the cheese ravioli, and said it was a flavorful dish and very cheesy. Portion size was just right for her, but could be a bit smaller for someone with an appetite. I had a 12" woodfired Sal's special pizza. Pretty good, nice fresh toppings. This neat little Italian spot is located in the heart of Plainfield. They have a decent-sized parking lot and dining area. It has a cozy feel to it. The staff there is friendly enough, but I will admit that I only had limited interaction with them. They serve all of your favorite Italian dishes including pizza (stuffed and regular), calzones, lasagna, spagahitti, chicken dishes, veal dishes, breadsticks, soups and salads. I ordered a Caesar salad and an All-Meat Calzone. My food was prepared very fast. It was ready in less than 8 minutes and fresh and hot. The salad was strong, and luckily, that is how I like it. It was very flavorful and tasty. The calzone was really good, too. The cheese was oozing out. They have a happy hour from 3 to 5 every weekday, where patrons get a percentage off their total check. Apparently, there are a few Sal's Famous Pizzerias on the west side of Indianapolis. Sal gets around over here. This one in Plainfield has a large dining room, with tables and booth seating. The service was excellent, from start to finish. We started with the bread sticks and garlic rolls. The garlic rolls look very pretty, but I liked the simple taste of the plain breadsticks. They are served with marinara sauce. I got a Caesar salad, which was just slightly over dressed, and the parmesan looked like it was the kind you shake out of a can. You (and by you, I mean I) need freshly grated parmesan on a Caesar! No exceptions. Needless to say, it wasn't my favorite of the meal. My main was a vegetarian calzone, which was stuffed with ricotta, mozzarella and vegetables. It was fine, but the dough was just a tad too sweet and fluffy -- it tasted more like a dough for a pastry and not a savory calzone, if that makes sense. My children got slices of pizza, which they really enjoyed. If you visit for lunch, you can get pizza by the slice here, which is nice. We finished with cannoli, filled with sweet ricotta cream and chocolate chips. The cannoli were really good, and even though I don't typically enjoy cannoli, I ate the whole thing! After the grand reopening of Sals in Brownsburg my family and Decided to give it a shot. Who doesn't like a nice Italian meal. The great comfort food, pasta and bread! Well for starters we went early and had pretty much the whole place to sit anywhere but the maitre D' sat us right up front at the checkout with the music blaring from a speaker directly in front of us. No worries we ignored it and were happy to be there even though the table selection was odd. The staff was obviously high schoolers except for one waitress and a few of the kitchen helpers we had a great view of from our front row seat. The waitress we received was obviously very young and seemed to be overly engaged with the young girl behind the check out counter who never moved from her spot the entire dining service. We sat and waited for quite a while before our waitress came back to take our order. We decided to get a couple of appetizers even though Sals provided complimentary bread and a sun dried tomato dipping oil. We ordered the Combo appetizer and garlic rolls. While waiting on our appetizers for quite some time and while watching the girls all stand behind the take out counter ( right in the line of sight of our table) and chit chat, we finally get our appetizers dropped off. She did ask if we were ready for our order and we ordered pesto linguini, fettuccine Alfredo, and spaghetti with sausage. While eating the appetizer I noticed the calamari tasted very dry and freezer burnt. The calamari rings were definitely not fresh and definitely not overcooked, Just dry and off putting. The mozzarella sticks were the same freezer burnt and had no cheese pull from being cool. Probably from sitting on the counter waiting for all the girls to quit talking. The garlic rolls were good as usual and has always been one of the bright spots for Sal's. After sitting for quite some time still with no straws and never being checked on once, our food arrived and looked decent. First thing I noticed is my spaghetti had no sausage and simply had smashed up meatballs mixed into the pasta. The taste was ok but the smashed up meatballs tasted like the bagged frozen meatballs from Kroger. The pesto linguini was good and so was the fettuccini Alfredo. During the course of our meal and being out of water and never being checked on once to see if our food was right or tasted ok, we watched the high school kids be high school kids, 4 of them at a time behind the counter laughing and chatting, for very long times. The bus boy standing behind the bar with the drink nozzle in one hand while putting small amounts in a glass and drinking them while holding his cell phone and eating was off-putting. It was obvious there was no manger on duty. When the waitress came back I asked if there was a manager. She stated "I think so" I had to ask her can I speak with them please and she said " I don't think he's available" I had to ask to speak to whoever is in charge and she said "he's in the office I think" I asked for his name and she said " I think it's Nathan" she didn't even know who the manager was! I had to ask her to get the manager so I could talk to them and she was very hesitant. I'm laid back and casual so It's cool if it's me but others may not be so kind. If there was a contact us page or if I would have actually spoke to the manager that would have been my preferred way to bring attention to what kind of experience we had. Finally a young lady from the kitchen named Iris came out and said she was the manager. From the food on her apron and from her not looking like a Nathan I had my doubts she was a manager. I explained to her what we witnessed and how we had no table service, drink refills or checked in on for food taste or quality and she apologized. She also said she was next in charge when I questioned why Nathan didn't come out to speak to us and she stated there was no manager on duty but she was next in charge. She didn't seem to want to be talking to me and definitely had no desire to try and understand the concerns I was sharing. While this was taking place our waitress was no where to be found and then all the girls and bus boy came out of the kitchen back behind the bar and all were looking our way. Still as we sat there with empty glasses and almost 2 hours into our visit we could tell it was pointless to try and help any more. Sals has been a staple in Brownsburg for many years and I'm sure this is not typical, at least I hope not. Please don't take my experience this trip as a reason not to give them a try. They did just recently reopen and they are still asking for help. I hope they get it together and can learn from my discussion with Iris but I'm not so convinced. Celebrated a late birthday here on a rainy Wednesday eve. I was pleasantly surprised to see there were many occupied tables when we arrived! We intended to dine outside in the wine garden area, but obviously Mother Nature had different plans! We were seated quickly in the dining room which is cozy in an Italian family sort of way. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. Our salads arrived quickly; one exception was an appetizer mussel special which took a few minutes longer but was presented beautifully when it arrived. All were fresh and flavorful, as well. We chose calzones and a spinach roll as our entrées. These were quite large and none of us could finished the whole order so we had leftovers for the next day. A firm five stars for the experience and pizza. A more critical review would be surrounding the appetizers (I got a sampler). I wasn't overly impressed with the quality. It tasted and presented like something I'd pickup from any other pizza shop. I would love to see some differentiation on that front. I've driven past this fun spot a few times and decided for my birthday to try it! We made reservations but as it was a week night in February it wasn't busy. While waiting fir our party we perused the menu and there are options for every taste. The waitress was attentive but not overly but took good care of our table. Once we got settled we ordered appetizers and enjoyed the complimentary fresh bread with an herb infused olive oil dip. It was delicious! Our appetizers were large and I have to admit next time I might just order the garlic knots as my main course! It had 4 large sized buttery concoctions (think savory cinnamon roll) that were piping hot and melting with ooey gooey cheese inside. The appetizer comes with sauce so I suggest the marinara, perfection! The second appetizer was breaded eggplant which was just so-so. It had somewhat good flavor but was too fried and rather greasy and heavy. The sauce on it was what made it edible in my opinion, so I'd skip that next time. The main courses chosen were various ravioli, pizza and a creamy pasta. I had the spinach ravioli which was perfectly al Debye, rich flavor and textures between the spinach and cheese and marinara. Yum! I split that with my husband so as to try his pizza. I loved the crust and could taste the wood fired aspect. Our choice was a bit flat and lacked a kick to it, but was done well. We probably just need to choose another pizza or different toppings. It was good but I'd try another pizza option next time. All in all everyone loved their food and given the cost the portions were generous and filling. You get a soup or salad with an entree so we did not go away unsatisfied. Went for lunch. There were no prices so I asked for pricing and specials. The guy answered and we ordered. The payment machine auto added 20% gratuity. We then got our own drinks and sat at the one clean booth. Few minutes later a lady yells out our order and we had to get our own food. So why did I pay a gratuity? The food was edible.
