Char used to be one of my favorite places but the last three times my experience has been meh. The front desk crew is always welcoming and friendly but I tend to get this Black man server that is ... not attentive. The first time I thought it was just me, but the next time I went with a friend and she noticed it. He tends to favor larger parties. He wouldn't come unless we called and sent food by others. I came here for lunch with my co-workers. The restaurant and ambiance is nice. The service was amazing. Our server (I wish I remembered his name) was very attentive. He kept checking on us while during our dining experience, which I personally appreciate. The food was pretty good- well, my meal was delicious. I had the redfish with spinach and mashed potatoes. I did have one complaint- my spinach was SALTY! My co-workers had the salmon. It came with two sides- they asked for greens and black eyed peas. So this was suggested for lunch and I was glad we stopped by. She didn't suggest the salmon but it was just screaming out to me and I am so glad I did... it was just a little bit on the over oily side with the veggies but the salmon was just over medium and the grill taste was great! Based on recent reviews, I decide on Char for our Friday Date-Night. We had not been there in years because our last two visits were disappointing compared to our experiences at the Jackson, MS location. So, our expectations were not high. Tonight, the food (Chili-Fried Oysters, Scallops, and Seafood Carbonara) were delicious. Also, the flavor-profiles, plated presentations, and service was much improved. In fact, my wife, who knows how difficult it is to make and serve a good risotto, said their roasted red bell pepper risotto was probably the best she has had in Memphis. The only ding was several of the oysters were pretty small (size of a grape). Thomas-G, our Server, was warm, patient, engaging and attentive with us and the other tables he was serving. Char's is rather upscale ambiance with a very sophisticated style of decor. My meal was nice, I got the Wednesday Lunch Special. Short Ribs, Greens, Sweet Potato Mash and Cornbread Muffin. Decided to celebrate my birthday at Char this year. My aunt and I went to lunch at this fine establishment. The ambiance was a nice and quiet since we dined around 1:00. The hostesses were very nice and cordial. There is plenty of parking for guests. Our servers were great but did not tell us their names. Could be a management policy to remain anonymous. Not sure. They were very helpful with suggestions and recommendations as we have never eaten there. They were attentive and fast. The food was excellent. I had a house salad with ginger peanut dressing. I kept the dressing to enjoy. For lunch I ordered the salmon. It came on top of a bed of broccolini, zucchini and squash. There was a nice tasty sauce on the bottom. My aunt started with a cup of gumbo. She said it was delicious. For her entree she ordered the grilled grouper which came with orzo with a pecan butter sauce. Our food was very flavorful and filling. Been to Char several times and it is always wonderful. Tonight was no exception. Impromptu anniversary dinner. Service was spot on. My husband had his usual ribeye. Cook was perfect. I had the scallops with red pepper risotto, asparagus , grilled grapes and leek cream. It was so good. Scallops were buttery, melt in your mouth. This visit that I had at Char Memphis was particularly disappointing. My friend and I sat at the bar this go round. The bartender seemed disinterested in serving us. The menus were sat in front of us with barely any greeting. We ordered our drinks which were throwing together with no care. We also ordered appetizers which took approximately 45 minutes to be served to us. At that point there wasn't even an interest to order entrees. After a subpar experience, we asked for a manager who didn't even show empathy to this situation. He offered little to no help in the matter, which is why I am writing this. As a person who frequently used to visit Char, the service has completely gone to hell. We won't be back, and we won't be recommending Char Memphis to anyone! Char is a sophisticated, modern space with beautiful lighting and decor. I came for a birthday celebration with friends. The service was subpar, it took a while to get drinks, appetizers, and food. I had the sidecar, and it was delicious! Followed by the fried oysters for my appetizer, they were sooooo good! For my entree I had the pork chop. I had an obligation so I had to get my pork chop to go because it took too long to come out. The ambiance is wonderful! The food is quite delicious. I love the bar and the pianists. But the bartenders: Char just can't seem to get friendly ones. Walked in a few evenings ago, sat at the bar, and was finally "greeted" by a bartender with a frown and no welcome. He changed into a friendly bartender, however, when his buddy sat down at the bar. Wow, they were even fist-bumping. Came back over to us after we got his attention, and he transformed back into his unfriendly self. I won't return for a while. Sad for such a nice place. read more

A friend reserved the back room for her birthday party. We had a pre-fix menu and it was quite good. I had the seafood gumbo, filet, and pecan butter crunch. The seafood gumbo was delicious but small. I should have gotten the bigger bowl. The filet was cooked to perfection and the sides were nice but not memorable. The Pecan Butter Crunch hit the spot. I also ordered the bourbon mixed cocktail. The mint in the drink overpowered the bourbon. I could not tell what type of alcohol I was drinking but the drink tasted great. The Manhattan was like a traditional manhattan but way too bitter. It tasted like charcoal. Service was decent. Servers didn't stay for long but we always got what we needed. We decided to dine here on a Saturday. Made reservations for 5:45. When we arrived we were immediately greeted and seated at our table. Our waiter was prompt and attentive but at times it did come off as if he was rushing us to place our orders. We started with the crab claws. 1/2 fried 1/2 sautéed! Yall, these things were so good and it's a pretty hefty portion of them! These were the highlights of our meals! We truly enjoyed those. We ordered blueberry lemon drops. To me, they were just ok. For our entrees I got the Cornbread Dusted Redfish. It was very good and hot(fresh). It comes on a bed of grits which i also truly enjoyed! It had spinach under the fish which could've used some seasoning. The spinach had no seasoning at all but all together, the meal was good. For a side i ordered the southwest cream corn and it too was good but could've been served much hotter than what we got. My husband got the Duck Breast which macaroni on the side. For some odd reason, he asked for his duck to be well done-bad choice. It was so dry! He said next time he would order it medium or medium well. He did think that the waiter should've suggested the best way to have the duck but it was his choice. The macaroni had great flavor but nothing special about it. For dessert, we ordered the blueberry bread pudding. It was a big portion and wished it was also served with ice cream. But for what it was, it too was pretty good. All together, the service was very nice and the food was good. I'm glad to have given Char a try. read more

Some friends and I went to Char on a Wednesday evening and everything was wonderful. The service was exceptional and the food was great! I started with the Caesar salad which was great and the lettuce was very fresh and crunchy. I had the Redfish entree with the cheese grits and I substituted my steamed spinach with spinach au gratin. I was skeptical about my recent visit to Char this week. My first visit left a sour taste in my mouth. I was this during a brunch service given poor service, hair in my food, and a manager somewhat berating over the validity of what I said about the experience. Needless to say I still went to celebrate with a friend and was thoroughly pleased by our server. I believe his name was Matt (sorry if it wasn't because you deserve all of the accolades). He recommended the Blueberry Lemon Drop, which was absolutely delightful. I ended getting the Shrimp and Grits as my meal as it was something I wanted to try my first visit but was unable to do. Decent size meal and very tasty. I'm giving it a four since some of the staff seems to be lacking in customer service. But I would try it again. Maybe always for dinner. read more

Our second time there and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The 3 butter tasting appetizer was very good. House salad with the ginger peanut dressing also very good. Wife had the filet and I had the sirloin, both cooked to perfection at medium rare plus. This is one of the few steakhouses in town who know what that really means. Our desserts consisted of the double cut brownies and the pecan pie, both very good. Not that the brownies were dense. The service was excellent. The only thing that Char could have done better was to recognize that it was our wedding anniversary since I put it in the comment section when made the reservation via Open Table. Our experience with other restaurants for the same occasion is that there would be a special something for us during the meal. But I guess that is getting picky. Still a wonderful experience and definitely will go back. read more

Wifey took me there tonite for my birthday. Received a warm welcome at the entrance and was seated immediately. Our server was Ali who was excellent. Great service, friendly, attentive, professional and extremely pleasant. The restaurant is very nice inside and nice background music was playing, but not too loud. I had the redfish and the wife had the seafood carbonara. Both were excellent and both had serving sizes that were more than ample. Ali even gave me a dish of birthday cake ice cream to celebrate. It was very good, but I was so full from the dinner that I couldn't finish it. Ali was sweet for bringing it to me, WITH A CANDLE! I highly recommend Char. We will return! read more
