I just had the best dinner last night at Chao Kreung and recommend it even more highly than even before if that's possible! The key is to check out their special offerings each time you go. Last night we ordered the prawn curry & it was seriously melt in your mouth huge prawns cooked to perfection and a curry that was so luscious and creamy. But what blew my mind was their oysters offered Thai style. I've never thought of oysters and thai flavors compatible but it's now the only way I want them. Their wine list is incredible and has a ton of natural wines and of course incredible Riesling's which pair so well with Thai cuisine. Their servers are all super kind and you can tell they are happy to be there. It just helps make for a lovely dining experience when you can tell the business takes good care of their employees. I've been going to Chao Krung for a couple of years now. The food is good and the location is convenient for me. I recently decided to download their app to avoid using that other big delivery app, which I thought was a good move as it would save both me and the restaurant money, and I don't mind going there to pick up the food since it's relatively close. Big mistake. Last night I used the CK app to order food, including a salad with grilled beef. After picking up the order and returning home, I realized while plating that they had given me pork on the salad, which I don't eat. Bummer, given that I had spent the time to pick it up, and knowing that they don't make food fast, so a replacement was nowhere in the near future. I called the restaurant to let them know, and instead of an apology or offer to fix the order, was met with insistence that they do not offer beef on the salad. I doubled checked my order and confirmed that beef had indeed been selected. I was put on hold for a few minutes until the manager picked up the phone, and without asking me anything, again simply insisted that beef was not an option. I drove back to the restaurant with the salad and my phone, which clearly showed the order history, including the salad with beef. Despite being shown the order history *on their own app* which confirmed that the salad was supposed to have beef, I was again met with insistence that they don't make that salad with beef! If you've seen the "computer says no" skit on Little Britain, then you can imagine how this back and forth went for about ten minutes. The manager (Men) was hostile and dismissive the entire time, insisting that I had somehow made a mistake using their app (?) Eventually, he begrudgingly agreed to give me a refund, which took another ten minutes. At no point was there any indication that they had accepted any responsibility for their mistake, and all that I got served was a really bad attitude. I looked at their app this morning, and they have now removed that salad option, presumably to fix their mistake in the app. I guess it would have just been easier to use the big delivery app, where I could have simply clicked on the "wrong item delivered" option and gotten a refund. It's a bummer because I do like the food there, but LA has lots of great Thai food, so I'm definitely not willing to put up with the terrible service just for the convenience of it being close by. read more

Loved this place. Server was very attentive and funny as she kept warning us and checking in on us about the spice levels of our food. To be fair, the papaya salad is indeed pretty spicy and she made sure to warn us to avoid the peppers or our mouths would die. Such a cute restaurant! I'm very picky when it comes to thai food because I'm Thai. Everything was pretty authentic here. The only underwhelming dish was the papaya salad which was kinda bland. We came here for lunch since we were in the area. Their prices are on the higher end for Thai food, although the portions were pretty substantial. We ordered the pork jowl and it was excellent (5/5), would definitely order it again. The reason I rounded down is because the pad see ew, with crispy pork belly was way below average (2/5). The pork belly was reheated to the point it was just a hard, dry chalk dust and for some reason it came with regular broccoli when the menu clearly says Chinese broccoli. The addition of large chunks of regular broccoli was weird. The noodles were fine, a little bland so I added the sauce from the pork jowl. Zero customers other than me. Not much attention to detail, the sauce was tasty . The panang curry was chicken , curry soup and a couple of lime leaves. Mild, which is fine. Very fishy. There aren't very many great dining options near the Grove but Chao Krung stands out as a diamond in the rough. The food here is authentic and delicious. I have tried so many things here but my favorite items here are the papaya salad, pad see ew, crispy tofu, and oxtail massaman curry but you really can't go wrong here. They do a great job with wok-fired noodle dishes, comforting curries, and offer a selection of more northern Thai dishes like grilled chicken. Minus 1 star because service can be slow at times and the food was oddly salty our most recent visit. I always recommend making a reservation here, as it can get busy. We waited 2 hours and 20 minutes for food that came out cold and burnt which is odd cause you would assume burnt food would be piping hot. Our first bite we could taste nothing but carbon. Our reservation was at 5, we arrived at 5:15pm and weren't served until 7:20pm. We got skewers and our main entree, everything was cold my boyfriend even got a fried egg on the side, we each took a bite and it was cold! When we told the waiter about it she blatantly lied and told us they had just made it... and came back admitted guilt and saying the chef would "warm up" our food. Anybody that was ever worked in the food industry knows that means they'll either pop it in the microwave or throw it in a frying pan for a few minutes. I'm not paying you to warm up my food, I'm paying for a freshly, HOT, made meal. Should've offered a fresh plate of everything but all they did was offer to "warm it up" after waiting 2 hours for COLD food. Owner never came out to apologize or offer anything to make it up. Maybe it was because we are Latino's, the only ones in the establishment by the way, but we left disappointed and hungrier than when we arrived. read more

Wow was this place good. I have had a pretty poor record when it comes to picking Thai options. So much so the family usually will pivot to some thing else If I recommend one Chao Krung meet all of our expectations. Even what could have been a serious service issue was handled with such professionalism and ease that I had to stick with 5 stars. I will explain. We were eating a bit after lunch so street parking was available right in front. Service was attentive and polite. They have a decent selection of draft beer and it was served properly in a chilled glass. The Food: Pot Stickers: part of the lunch these 3 fried pot stickers were perfection. The crunchy chewy wrapper gave saw to a savory filling and the sauce added a nice sweet salty hit to it. Green Papaya Salad: Perfectly executed. Not only was is it visually appealing, the taste was among the best I have had. Crunchy, a touch of sweet and sour with the sauce adding so much unami. The tomatoes were perfect and added a acidic element to things Green Beans: Excellent. blistered and served with a tasty sauce. crunchy but cooked and covered with toasted onion, I could have eaten just this. Chicken Satay: 4 skewers of grilled, flavorful chicken with a thick peanut sauce for dipping. The pickled cucumbers and onions were a perfect side and added a sweet, salty, savory, crunchy element to the dish. Pad Thai: This was for the table. and having ordered way too much and wanting to max out on eating the green beans I did not taste this. However, the table was about 1/3 through when we found a hair. The hostess immediately came over, apologized and set about making it right. The dish was taken off and a replacement was fired for us to take to go since we were almost done. Stuff happens that is often out of the control of a restaurant. However, they do control how they respond. TLDR: The food is good, but don't expect timely service, proper seating, or great customer treatment. This place has exceptional food; while the portions are on the smaller side, they are satisfying, and you won't have any complaints when it comes to taste or flavor. The food is well-prepared, but the experience was marred by other factors. The service, unfortunately, left a lot to be desired. Despite the restaurant being far from busy -- there were only three or four other tables occupied -- the wait time was excessively long. It took so long for our food to arrive, and we weren't even in a rush. The appetizer came out after about an hour, even though we had asked for all the food to be served at the same time. This left us sharing the appetizer, which was meant to be my meal, because the rest of the food was delayed. After finishing the appetizer, we waited another 30 minutes for soup, and then an additional 20 minutes for one entree. What made it more frustrating was watching other tables, who arrived after us, get their food before us. I didn't make a fuss about it, as that's just not my style, but it was definitely an observation that stood out. Although the food itself was lovely, the strange pacing completely disrupted our ability to enjoy the meal. Another issue we encountered was with seating. We arrived as a party of two and were asked to sit at the bar, despite several open booths and two-person tables being available. When we requested a booth or a more appropriate table, we were told there were none available. Instead, we were seated at the edge of a long table meant for large parties (there was a large party at that table already). Throughout our entire meal, several booths and tables remained open and unoccupied, which was confusing. This made it difficult to communicate with each other due to the table's size and the restaurant's noise level. The staff, in general, felt standoffish for the setting. It wasn't the warm, welcoming atmosphere I expected. The décor and ambiance were great, and I can see why the restaurant is considered a local landmark, but the overall service and treatment was disappointing. In summary, while the food and atmosphere were good, the service and seating issues made for an unpleasant dining experience. My pal Chris loves this place and I was thrilled to try their amazing cuisine... everything was going well until a super loud and unmanageable crowd of parents and kids came in shortly after we ordered... after a half hour of shrieking and screaming, I politely asked a parent to deal with this situation... the man said " I cannot do that... it isn't possible "... NOW, to be clear, I love children ( raised 3 on my own), so, I totally understand the challenges of parenting and because so many small businesses are suffering, my friend and I tried very hard to be " cool as cukes"... we decided to enjoy our repasts, chitty chat with each other and ignore the situation. The food is gorgeous and delicious and the VIBE is fabulous! I had a spicy beef salad and my friend had a spicy thai fried chicken dish... I want to try everything on the menu. This is elevated Thai Cuisine. Traffic was insane today and we both agreed we would come back on a weekday evening and try more dishes. The waitstaff are kind and lovely. This is a family owned business that has been serving up Thai dishes since 1974. Apparently they have another restaurant with the same chef on Sawtelle in my neighborhood which is great to know! Came here Christmas Eve without a reservation, and we were lucky that we were seated since we came relatively early! We couldn't tell how big the dining area is, and whether if there were additional seats in the back of the restaurant. The staff here are all super nice and attentive. It could be because of Christmas Eve, but they seemed to be quite understaffed. We had to wait for quite a while for our main courses but at least the appetizers arrived promptly to keep us from being angry. We got here early enough and was able to place the last order for happy hour. It was such a good decision! My husband had the sangria - which he claimed to be the strongest sangria he's had. We also ordered chicken wings and chicken satay. Those happy hour deals were no joke! we probably had no less than 10 wings in our order! The chicken satay were probably also the juiciest satays I've had in along while - it was NOT dry or tough at all. While we did wait a long time for our mains to arrive, it was probably for the best given how much the appetizers were. We ordered the khao soi and a pork shoulder penang curry. The khao soi was just alright, but the penang curry was out of the world! the pork shoulder was so soft, and the penang curry was very rich and thick - plenty to go with the rice as well. I wish we saved room for dessert since I was craving mango sticky rice after seeing their ripe mango on the counter, but we had to stop ourselves from a food coma. Absolutely one the best Thai food I've had so far in SoCal! We came here minutes before closing and all the food came out quick! My absolute favorite of the night was the oxtail curry. So many complex flavors and the beef was falling off the bone! Also must try the Thai fried chicken with sticky rice. Just WOW! We ordered about 5 different dishes and were afraid it would be too much for 3 to share family style but we ate it all up and licked the plates clean (we also had two big hungry guys and a girl who can eat). The pad kee mow was alright not the best I've had but still really good. The papaya salad on the other hand was the perfect amount of acidity to cut the fatty fried pork belly. Service was quick and everyone was really friendly. Even way after closing people were still coming in to pick up to go orders. Kai Jiew over rice was so tasty, curry had great flavor and their crispy pork was perfectly done in our pad thai. No hate on being a basic & getting pad thai, it's freaking delicious here. Been here a few times out of convenience as I live nearby. Haven't visited lately because I think it's a little expensive but the portions are a good size. Came in for the lunch special, it's not too busy. maybe 2 or 3 dine in tables. Ordered lunch special pad kee map with tofu without basil, still came out with basil. I'm annoyed but understand it happens. Dunno if it's the chef or the server that missed it but either way, order was still off. The restaurant itself is nice and has a great decor. I got seated at the inside part facing the windows, which was odd given the low lighting indoors because I couldn't see anyone's faces when I was ordering or asking for anything which was just weird overall.
