I really like the concept of choosing your own dish, the restaurant was a bit noisy but friendly staff. When I entered the area where you fill your bowl she told me to grab two bowls so I did and noticed everyone else did too! Great selection of meats, fish and veggies, I ended up with a nice dish more then I could eat at one sitting, and mine was small compared to others in line. When I asked for a container (doggie bag) I was told I couldn't take my leftover food. I was surprised, what a waste of food and money! I had eaten at a similar restaurant in Eugene and was able to take my leftovers. Very disappointed that any restaurant would throw food away rather then allow patrons to take it home. Just doesn't make sense. read more

Brought the wife here and as the reviews stated... yes the line is long. Two people worked the grill but what irritated me was not just that they burnt both of our plates (twice). But that he uses that scraper to clean the grill and doesn't care about where that crap is going. As he was scraping it, I watched the chunks of old burnt food being pushed into the fresh food on the grill.. dude what?? You are kidding me. Maybe you wouldn't have as much crud to scrape if you oiled the grill.. instead, they put the food on a bone dry grill and scrape it to mix it up. We were asked if we wanted rice and some sort of rice wrap and we said yes, we also got one cup of egg flower. By the time we got back with our burnt food, the rice was cold, the wraps were really stiff and the egg flower was awful. For a dinner it cost us $30, and I am disappointed in this place. Maybe it's time the staff actually reads these reviews and makes this restaurant better then a 1 star place. It has potential but with out some changes it's not recommended by me. It wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. Still the same boring flavor, but I could endure another meal with my parents here. The problem I have here, as I have any all-you-can-eat place, is the clientele. (This is really a comment on the state of the country, as opposed to the restaurant.) People: you can always go get more, and there's plenty of food for everyone. I understand you're starving after the long walk from your car to the door, but get a grip. I understand that you are afraid of burning an additional 10 calories waiting your turn, but let's be polite--especially to the old folks who might be a little slower at filling their bowls. And for crying out loud, add some vegetables to that meat. Gawd. Anyway. It's bland but not horrible. It might upset your guts a little though. read more

This is pretty much the place you go with your diabetic dad in Salem. Meat and veggies and then some. Sure, you'll have to smack the plum sauce out of his hands, but it's worth it. We probably eat here a couple times a month. My food is always good because I make it awesome--and I applaud myself like I'm some Mongolian Grill Genius (and let's face it, I think I am). I request for my food pile to sit on the grill a little longer to get caramelized, and they always oblige. We always tip the grill guys. You've got to. The food is probably a good 2.5 stars out of 5, compared to other Mongolian grilles that I've been to. However, I can't honestly find it in me to give these guys more than 1 star, all due to the fact that the lines are massive! Doesn't matter what time you come in here, the line to get your food cooked usually takes 20-30 minutes on average. The grill is tiny and the waiting area is as well. There's also nowhere to set your bowls of food while you wait for them to be cooked, since most people are blocking the grill area while they wait for their food to be cooked. My wife and I have came here numerous times and finally decided enough is enough. Each time we come it takes 30 minutes just to get our food cooked. If the managers had half a brain they would add a second grill area and a shelf that runs along the wall to set your food one while you wait. I love this place! Every restaurant on Earth has its flaws, and yes, the line can get quite long at times, but come one! A vast array of food ingredients to choose from, sauce you custom make yourself, perfectly grilled, all you can eat--worth every minute of waiting! Delicious food here two days ago brought us back again today and we will be again. Great staff and extremely friendly. They were literally having a competition to see who could fill waters first, this is the main judgment for my tips usually, that being said I did not go thirsty nor was I bothered just kept a good eye on. I knew what I wanted and I got it all done in one trip while my girlfriend went for two trips. While I waited by myself noticing the smaller details of the restaurant and enjoying my after meal high, the waitress (current leader in water fills) took my plate and asked me if i was done then asked me if we were gonna want ice cream and I said yes and she asked if I wanted mine now or to wait. This may seem like a minuscule detail but it shows something, years of customer service experience. For a place where you kind of serve yourself I felt taken care of. She accidentally brought three ice creams and I ,no shame, tried to eat two but managed to be defeated, only eating 1 and a half, haha Great place for lunch under $20 for 2 people, we always get there as they open to beat the rush. There area a few reviews on here that complain about them closing in the middle of the day. It's a requirement to deep clean that grill and other cooking appliances that have catch basins, it's a serious fire hazard plus a clean grill is a good thing. A little on the pricey side but that seems to be expected when you are at a buffet. How it works is there is a counter with various meats, vegetables and sauces. Grab a bowl or two and start putting in what you want (usually, meat goes in one bowl and everything else in the other but the cooks can accommodate if you mix stuff up). Take your bowl(s) up to the cooks and watch them throw it on the grill and create a delicious meal for you. Dinner is nearly $12 a person (at least last time I was there) but you can eat as much as you can. You can have noodles with chicken and broccoli or if you fancy a little beef and lamb with rice and pineapple you can do that, or you can keep mix everything together and see what happens. You have the option to get as creative as you want with the food selection. Depending on how busy it is, it could take anywhere from 3-15 minutes from when you start putting food together and when you sit down to eat. Depending on what you mix together, I can't guarantee you'll love it at first. Just use your best judgment and mix together what you think will be tasty and I'm sure you;ll be satisfied. read more

The cooks grill the food right in front of you and have always done a great job with my food. After dinner, they offer soft serve as a dessert. I happen to like Mongolian grills. No limit on food, make your own dishes, blend your own sauces as hot as you like... This one happens to be on the mediocre side of the long line of establishments I have visited. Yes, it has all of the above qualities, but for some reason. . . nothing really stood out or impressed me. Here at Chang's they did not have jalapenos or hot chili sauce to blend into my mix. This was a little disappointing, as I like my food HOT. I tried to make due, but the flavor just didn't come out right. This also could have been due to the fact the griller burnt my noodles. The choice of either rice or rice paper to make wraps in was nice. I picked the wraps, but just ate the wraps rather than put anything into it - not really sure why actually. . . hmm. Sodas are refilled often, the waitresses are friendly, the restaurant itself clean. From what I could see, the meat and veggies were replenished as needed, nothing running on empty. The cost of dinners at the Mongolian grills seems to be sneaking up there, and I thought it a little spendy for Salem. Oh, I'd come back, just wouldn't be on my top 10. read more

One of the most disappointing meals ever! The 5 of us came in for dinner (03/04/18) @ $16/per person & probably didn't even get $16 of food between all of us. My food on my plate was dry, flavorless ( I defiantly put enough sauces on it) and the bottom half was burnt and my husband had Some burnt and at least half his plate of food wasn't even on the plate when the cooks got thru with cooking it. My daughter's and daughter in laws was also not so great but they ate what there was. My son's was so so. We left because it wasn't worth standing in that line to get another plate of bad food. When we paid the bill I did say something to the cashier guy. He did apologize but nothing else. I felt a bit more annoyed because that was Alot of money for very little food. Don't come here during lunch if you are in a hurry. They don't open till 11:30 so there is a high chance that the grill will be greatly backed up. The last two times I came here, I spent probably 45 minutes of the hour I was there in line waiting for the food to be cooked on the grill. The guys are working hard as they can, it's just the grill isn't big enough and there isn't enough of them. I almost think it's on purpose because unless you have unlimited time then you have to limit how much you eat. And by making you wait for the grill it allows you to feel full so you don't go for a another trip. Great food, just too busy. read more

Chang's is just so-so. It's all you can eat, but the waiting time is so long, you'll only want to go through the line once, so really load up your bowl(s) that first time through. The sauces they have don't really add much flavor, so you can't make a spicy plate without adding their chili sauce after your food is cooked. I really liked the hot & sour soup, unfortunately, had to eat it with my meal rather than before. At $9.95 for lunch (drinks are extra), it's a decent value. Price is higher at dinner, but menu is the same. Don't go right before closing time because that's basically when they shut down the grill and you won't be able to get seconds if you want any. There are several ways Chang's could improve the dining experience - though I'm sure it will never happen. The best change would be just dropping you bowl off at the grill and have it delivered to your table by the server when it is ready. That would avoid the long wait in line just to have your bowl started by the cooks, and the additional waiting time while it cooks. I think most diners spend more time waiting in lines than dining. Another change would be to have tasty sauces premixed, rather than the rather flavorless ingredients that they have to choose from. read more

However I only gave 3 stars because the area for making your food is right next to the waiting area for the cooks and it feels very crowded. The line gets very long, very quickly so people were bumping into each other not only trying to walk around the make line but also trying to find room to wait for their food to be cooked. It would be a lot better if they took out a few tables to allow for more room so people aren't always in each other's way. It also took quite a while for us to get our food once we made our bowl. We stood waiting in line for about 20 minutes until our food was cooked. read more

There is an all-you-can-eat special that is less than $7 a person, allowing patrons to choose from a variety of meats (beef, lamb, pork, chicken) noodles, and veggies. The "cooks" usually vary from old Chinese men to young Mexican men on occasion, not that it matters but it could be an insight to the kind of turnover that happens here since I've never seen the same person twice. Overall im a fan, I enjoy going places where I can actually watch someone cook my food. No wondering what is going on with my meal behind closed doors and the fact I choose the ingredients. If your plate is not turning out well then you might be more to blame. They cook it but ultimately you are choosing the ingredients, sauces, spices etc so flavor is on you. The staff is super friendly and at least one of the cooks has been there for years and I know sometimes retention can play a part in your dining experience. As long as they know what they are doing then long term employees will normally provide better experience. The only thing that annoyed me was the server kept coming up "checking" on me but then would stand there over me staring. I do not like people hovering over me when I am eating. Other than that decent place to eat, I cant give 5 stars since I feel some stuff is lacking but a solid 4 for me. read more

We used to love this place a long time ago. Then we moved away and when we came back after 8 years, it wasn't what we remembered. The idea of a Mongolian Grill is fantastic and we've been to a lot of them: some are amazing, some are dives. This one is in between. The thing that struck me the most that had changed since we left in 2003 was that the place just doesn't feel as clean as it used to. Tables are sticky, floors needed cleaning. I realize it must be next to impossible to keep that buffet clean after each person traipses along spilling sauce everywhere, but it just seemed like it was a little unattended. For this kind of an atmosphere, we walked away feeling like we overpaid. The price seems high for what you actually get. The food was still good and we've still gone back a few times, but it just isn't what it used to be. read more

First of all, the food itself I would give a 5/5, it is the quality of service that really brought this place down. Went here with some friends for lunch and the place was slammed, which is understandable. We are greeted by a young man, not with a hello or welcome, but with a "there's a fifteen-minute wait, is that ok?" and I say ok and my party and I wait for an open table. After a short while, a woman takes us to our table and we head to the food line to pick our bowls. While in the line we notice that the buffet has gotten quite messy and so my friend points this out to one of the wait staff that is walking by and the staff member says "that's not my job," and then tells (not asks) my friend to move as the staff member sweeps at my friend's shoes with a broom. After moving down the line some more we got to the oils at the end of the buffet and some weren't labeled, my friends and I tried asking several of the wait staff that were passing by what the unlabeled oils were and got no responses other than annoyed looks. After playing the guessing game with our oils we got in line for the grill. The place was so busy that the grill line had started to wrap around the restaurant so we had to stand by some tables and were told (not asked) by wait staff to move out of their way. We finally get to the grill (which I was happy to wait for until I was being treated like a nuisance by the staff) and I was actually quite impressed by the synergy that the cooks had, the guys on the grill were absolutely killing it, they kept the line moving, *POLITELY* directed people around to avoid crowding, and kept grilling at the same time. We got our food and returned to the table and had an almost completely uninterrupted meal, we had to call out to passing wait staff (who were visibly annoyed by this) to get more water. Finally, when we finished our meal (food was excellent btw, 5/5) we had to dispute a charge for an extra plate that we didn't order. TLDR: This food was excellent, but you can get excellent Mongolian food at a lot of places. The wait staff was visibly annoyed at us the whole time and we did not feel welcome so we will not be returning. read more

I visited on a Wednesday night around 6pm & was seated promptly. There were very few people in line & I got my stir fried plate quickly. Food quality seemed pretty good & it was tasty! Very disappointed! We've been going here for many years but lately the service had been horrible (never coming back to give us more water or ask if we needed anything) never offered ice cream, ect. We waited over 15 minutes trying to get the waiter's attention as he walked by, bused some tables then disappeared. And to top it off, the cooks burnt our food. Good little place, previous reviews of waiting in line are corrected. Wasted a ton of excess food on the grill. People were filling up three bowls, rules need to be made so people can use 2 bowls and one plate then get it to go. Sad we weren't able to take a pretty hefty serving home and it had to be thrown out. Plan on spending $40+ with two people and tips. Should at least give a to go box if server knows that's your one and only plate. read more

The food is good but the restaurant is filthy. The tables are sticky, window sills are covered in dirt and dust. I don't think the pendulum lights have ever been cleaned, they're caked with grease and dirt. The biggest problem I had with cleanliness was the women's bathroom. It appears someone vomited in the corner of the stalls a long time ago and never been cleaned. There is a very old, very used toilet brush covered in nasty toilet paper sitting in the corner of the stall. I was told once to judge the cleanliness of a restaurant by the cleanliness of their bathrooms, that's a terrifying thought in this case read more

The waitress spoke so quietly that we couldn't understand what she was saying and got the wrong drinks. The cooks also put half if our order on someone else's plate and half of theirs on ours. They have great food at reasonable prices. Wait staff are pleasant and prompt. Their strawberry lemonade is one of my favorites. We come quite often & always leave happy. They have shrimp! First Mongolian I've had that has shrimp. Selection of veggies is small, meat selection is large. 2 types of fish choose from to. Woulda got 5 stars but no wifi and small selection of veggies. Also the cooks don't know how to cook Mongolian. They need to keep the food moving on the grill. Because it sits in one spot, you need to double the sauces you would normally put. Staff is friendly, bathrooms clean. read more

Raw meat everywhere. They use the same tongs for raw and cooked meat not sure if anyone else has an issue with this, but I do. They do not know anything about food handling. The food is good but the service is shameful. I watched my waitress purposely walk the opposite direction of our table so she didn't have to check on us. She helped the people RIGHT next to us multiple times not once asking if we needed anything, which we did. It got to the point where it was comical watching the waitress avoid us.
