I choose to get the stir fry here at Great Wall. I was excited. When I got back to my table, took my first bite and quickly realized the beef was rotten. I am in no way a picky eater, but when I take a bite of food I know isn't right, I stop eating and inform the staff. That was my plan, except no staff was around. Upon leaving I told the front desk lady who happily takes the money. Her response to me was "we don't have beef". When I informed her it was on the air fry station, she doubled down, "we dont have beef". When I took her there and showed her, she said, "Oh sorry", turned and left me in front of the rotten beef and returned to her station up front. She did not inform anyone else, I watched her go back up front, grab her phone and proceed to play her game which I so rudely interrupted her from. Beyond that if u look above the stir fry station, it has not been cleaned in YEARS. I will NOT ever be back. That is sad as I have been coming here for years. read more

The very first thing: When you enter the restaurant, there is a pay station, and it's there that you pay the standard amount per person for the buffet before you proceed to the area with the buffet stands and dining tables. The young woman manning this station was on what seemed to be a very animated, important call in Mandarin on her mobile phone. I put up three fingers, and things deteriorated from there. She asked me something in very poor, heavily-accented English, and then resumed her phone call. When I asked her to repeat what she asked me, she did, and then went back to her phone call. I apologised for not understanding her and asked her to repeat it a third time, and she became exasperated and visibly irritated with me and pointed to the extra charge for sodas on the menu. I then figured out that she was asking me if any of the three people in our party wanted soda with our meal. She had already turned her attention back to her phone call. I put up one finger for one soda, she activated the card reader, we paid, and then she said something equally unintelligible, which I assume was some form of "Enjoy your meal", and looked daggers at me, said something loud to the person on the other end of call, and then looked daggers at me again. So, she is very cross with me, well, angry, really, because her English skills are so awful that I cannot understand what she's saying. She's angry at me for her shortcomings. She's working as a cashier in an English -speaking country, her English should be passable, right? An analogy would be me working in Shanghai as a cashier in a restaurant and being unable to communicate with the customers in Mandarin. I've ordered food in restaurants all over the world, and really, I don't mind the hiccups that happen between two people that do not share the same language; I expect it. No big deal, you muddle through it, and it gets done. I don't even mind that this business tasked an employee with dealing with customers in English when her English skills are so very basic. But, why the anger at me because her English is so rudimentary and so heavily accented that I can't understand it? I wasn't angry about the situation, why is the person at fault angry about it? I don't get angry in France when a cashier doesn't understand my toddler-level French. I don't get irritated in Ecuador when the guy at the airport doesn't understand my miserable attempts at Spanish. It's inexplicable to me that I should be the target of her ire. And if she's acting that way with me, you know I can't be the only one. So, a bad start. The food: Everything seemed a bit old and tired, as if they had made it for lunch, it wasn't used up, they didn't replace it in order to save money, and it had been sitting in the chafing containers for hours, drying out. It was 3:30 PM when we were there. I'm sure everything we had was much better when it was fresh. So, very disappointing in terms of our meals. Putting the interaction with the cashier aside, I cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

As far as Chinese Buffets go, given the recent decline in their availability...especially here in the PNW...this one gets two stars because they are still open. Compared to locations in other parts of the country that are still somehow functional...this place is awful. It works for a round of depression eating if you're prone to that sort of thing. Even the Mongolian Grill element was meh and flavorless...despite being the FRESHEST thing available. Everything else felt like three day old, reheated leftovers. The desserts were the highlight...obviously a pre-frozen dessert...but good. The negative one star came from the bottles of Tapatio on each table...seriously...if you find yourself sitting here, look at the bottles of Tapatio. Tapatio...in a Chinese restaurant...it's a nod to the clientele that visit this restaurant in droves...but the bottles themselves...look like they were plucked out of a landfill and not a single lid in sight. That alone should have made me walk out. But...I was depressed and hungry...I ate...it fit the bill...two stars :( read more

Food is very good; you have a variety of options. As someone who goes often, the food does not change and normally stays the same each visit. The workers are friendly and are good at keeping up on busy days. They are quick to pick up plates, and the tables are always clean each time I go. Spent over $70 and the buffet was mainly empty of food. I asked if they were refilling and they said yes 5 more minutes and they never refilled any of the food. We got there at 7pm. If theres minimum food then they shouldn't allow anyone to come in past the point of putting no more food out. I feel I wasted $74 to be exact. Being there at 6 pm on a Friday, we were seated very quickly and served our drinks. From 6:30 pm on, the customers poured in. The restaurant remained very clean, and the tables were cleaned and ready for the next customers quickly. The food options were refilled every 5-15 minutes, keeping the food hot and fresh. The crab wontons were soft, not over cook crunchy. The spring rolls were good and crispy on the outside. There were enough seafood options for those who crave buffet-style Chinese food. The sweet and sour chicken coating was perfect, no old oil taste, and not greasy. We have been to Chinese buffets across the western states, and although our favorite and most expansive is in Tucson, AZ, Great Wall delivers acceptable expectations for the area. Looking at the pricing $$. M-F is the same cost, and only raises it $2 for the weekend. Look at the food photos and count how many different items are on our plates. read more

Been going here for years and I have to say, no Buffett has come close to the same memories and food. Go here every year for my birthday and I love it. My favorite part about this place is that they cater to their clientele. Us Mexicanos love buffets and so over the years as word has gone out about how good this place is and they've taken notice. They've got tapatío and horchata now- if you're in the know you know. I respect that. Service is fast, especially considering a typical group of 7+. As for ambiance they've got games being played around the flatscreens and they change it for you if you ask. I've eaten at dozens of Chinese buffets across the US. This one was pretty good a few years ago, but it's really deteriorated since then. They used to have 4-5 operating steam tables, now just 2. No sushi, very limited menu. And now, instead of charging $9-10 for lunch, any meal is $15.99. I speculate ownership is trying to stay in business by raising prices and cutting product. From the many fewer diners I saw my last couple meals they're driving their customers away. And once people give up on a restaurant they usually don't come back. Salem's other Chinese buffet, on Lancaster, is even worse. Looks like I'll be driving to Corvallis, Portland or Vancouver for my Chinese buffet fix. I'm updating this review after a mostly negative experience back in 2014. Following an initial bad experience with the wait staff, I ventured back and I'm glad I did. The buffet has a delicious variety of foods and I especially enjoy the stir fry. If you go in, do yourself a favor and don't sit in the booths. I've been dying to go to this place ever since I moved to Salem. I drive by it every day and the parking lot is always packed. The food was great and for all you can eat to be under $15 it is such a steal. They have 7 stations of food!!!! First 3 are normal Asian/American choices with potstickers, general tso chicken, spring rolls, hot and sour soup ETC. 1 station is entirely "Mongolian BBQ". 1 station is a salad bar. 1 station is sushi and the last station is desserts. Awkward to get into the parking lot to begin with...no direct access from main Street. Restaurant atmosphere is dark and feels unclean. Very poor lighting for both seating area and food areas. Choices for food are very limited but to their credit, they have a Mongolian BBQ counter for fresh cooking...service is extremely poor. No used plates were cleared between several excursions to get food, nor while sitting there...I had to ask for a water refill...they didn't think of it themselves. ROACHES! FOOD POISONING! My family and I were taking my elderly father in law to the buffet for his birthday and my wife starting feeling ill. My daughter was looking for some fruit for her and saw roaches in the salad bar and in the food. By the time we got out of there both of them were complaining that they were sick. Maybe I haven't been here enough to see why they have such low ratings but after two lunches here with the family I'd say the food is pretty good. I am comparing the food to other local Chinese restaurants and the competition is hardly fierce in Salem. There are several large stations all filled with a huge variety of Chinese dishes; shrimp with veggies, Sweet & Sour pork, Orange Chicken, salt & pepper pork, noodles, rice. They have a salad bar and a fresh stir fry station and even pizza. I can't remember the price for dinner but I think it was $10.99? One of only a few Asian buffets in Salem and has a good selection of what you would expect. The quality is solidly ok. Food is generally overcooked but the veggies and salad seem fresh. It has a little of everything including a Mongolian grill, a few Americanized sushi and a variety of desserts. It's not bad, but it's just not what you would get in a restaurant, so as long as you know that, the price is reasonable and what you might expect with no more. The bathroom was clean in appearance and smell. The servers very nice although don't expect anyone but the person at the counter to speak English. Like a lot of people here, I'm not too fond of buffet's. Generally, food is mass-cooked, lukewarm by the time you get to it, and while selection is big, it's sort of like eating at a prison dining hall. Believe me, I know. I can't eat that much, so I took small amounts of several things. The lo mein was just bad. The fried rice was alright. The spicy chicken and General Tsao's chicken was alright, and the sweet-and-sour chicken (...call it what it is; battered chicken pieces) was pretty standard. The sweet dough (i.e. doughnuts) were really good. My wife ate about six of those. She was unimpressed with the rest. My surprise was that it cost us about $11 for it. I get that a buffet is all you can eat. That's cool. But it just wasn't really worth it. We could have eaten at the Riverside Mongolian BBQ for that, and we really like that place. As for the ambiance, it was pretty depressing. Typical buffet place, but it felt really run down and past its prime. Plus, not only did we move seats right after arriving, since the kid on the other side of the booth from me kept bouncing around in his seat, we rushed out since they seated four teenagers right behind us in the new booth we moved to. They, also, bounced around a lot. My wife was being constantly jostled. We just paid and left. Decided to try the buffet and support the local restaurant, but boy was I sorry. They only had two warming tables, about 20 items, to select from. Had never been and tried it last night out of curiosity. It's been around a long time and it shows. Everything is very worn. All the furnishings the dinnerware etc. they really should think about replacing some of this stuff at least every 20 years. There is plenty of food to choose from. Avoid everything on the dessert menu--I tried it all to be fair--all of it has that cheap industrial bakery taste to it. For example you would only know that the cake you were eating was supposed to be chocolate with your eyes open. The taste is only vaguely chocolate but mostly just cheap sugar taste. Nothing stands out as remarkably good or even particularly "Chinese" sushi and two colors of jello were on the menu. Has a stir fry station which was the best part. So if willing to wait for it you can get freshly stir fried shrimp with noodles and vegetables. read more

Honestly was kinda over priced as it is, 17 something for adults. The food was barely warm. One the older guys grabbed one the waitresses by the am and started an argument with her. There wasn't that much of a selection but that wasn't to bad. I enjoyed some of the things but other things were either bland or slimy. My friends, sisters, and my stomach are all hurting and feel like throwing up. I can tell they are really trying but I am not sure I will be going back. And to counter it there is a policy where if you don't finish they would weight your food and charge you by the pound.
