I ordered carryout from Chinn's and was in the mood for something I grew up with in central Ohio called Wor Sue Gai.It's a dish that's surprisingly hard to find outside that region. I have come to discover that It's not a traditional Chinese dish, but an old-school American Chinese classic that seems to trace back to Cleveland and the broader Midwest. I was glad to see a version of it on the menu as almond chicken. While it wasn't exactly what I remember, it definitely scratched that nostalgic itch. This was solid, old-school American-style Chinese food. I ordered a combo and chose sweet and sour chicken with steamed rice, and added an order of spring rolls. Super sweet service and they were busting their tails as we went to dine in on Christmas! Quick, hot and large amounts of food. We were happy with the food and service. The ambiance leaves something to be desired but hey, they are open on Christmas and everyone around us seemed to be enjoying the meals and service! It's an old building but the prices were great and we're understanding of their likely budget. Also came with tea and egg flour soup or hot and sour soup with the combo meals. Sad to make this review. This used to be the go to place for us. The last few visits have disappointed. The service is slow and sometimes inattentive. Likely one server working both dining and bar or just hanging out in the kitchen. Who knows. Still get more food than you can eat in a single sitting but not necessarily edible. My diced almond chicken should be renamed to diced celery chicken and some of the celery was yellowing which left me questioning the freshness. Egg Foo Young was drowning in a thick brown slick of gravy. This item is obviously a processed frozen patty and not made in house. Instead it was a thick and spongy eggy bread patty that is too uniform in shape to be from scratch. The egg roll was the worst with filling so gray it was unappetizing. The wrapper was about a quarter inch thick and hard as all get out and reminded me of the salt dough Christmas ornaments we baked as kids. Had about 3/4 of the egg roll and 2/3 of the foo young left but didn't bother taking it home. Won't be back soon if ever. read more

I knew the flavor wasn't going to be proper when some white lady took my order, but, when ahead anyway. Pork fried rice tasted ok, but it was pretty plain. No egg, no veggies just pork and rice. Schechuan beef was no really spicy and kind of watery. The worst of the three dishes was the chicken chow mein. I don't know what that was, I think they used rice noodle when it should have been wheat noodle. The whole dish looked very pale white in color. Also, there were these curly bread stick things in the dish, very strange, no flavor, watery. I came from a part of the US with the largest Asian community outside of Asia, I know Chinese food, and this ain't it. read more

1st time at Chinn's as Salem newbies and we were pleasantly surprised. We had been disappointed by a couple of the Chinese restaurants along South Commercial and Chinns was the last on our list, unfortunately. Overall we found a portions huge, the variety of the menu and the freshness of the ingredients to be very positive, and their full bar to be much higher than our expectations. We took home way more than we ate, we had a couple of very good gin and tonics, and overall the price: quantity ratio was very much in our favor. The service was also excellent, we were never neglected & our waitperson was friendly & attentive. We will be back to our new favorite neighborhood Chinese restaurant soon! read more

The L1 Combo plate consisted of Sesame Chicken, Sweet & Sour Chicken and Pork Fried Rice. The L2 Combo plate consisted of BBQ Pork, Diced Almond Chicken and Pork Fried Rice. In our opinion and keep in our mind, our tastes buds are still on Hawaii mode, the Pork Fried Rice was a little bland and the BBQ Pork was a little dry. The food was classic Asian food. Nothing spectacular but just what we were looking for. I've had better service at other establishments. For instance my family of 4 walked in and 3 employees stood in front of us for more than 5 minutes ignoring us when there was plenty of seating available so that was not the issue. The employees were talking about tips and how the amount accrued was going to be distributed between the three. A male employee commented he was not happy with his shift he had worked because of the minimal tips offered. If we do ever go back definitely will order to go. read more

As of April 2024 they have not updated their website in 10 years. So when we tried to order take out, our total upon pickup was double what we had calculated it to be. My friend showed them the website prices on her phone and they told her that it wasn't their problem. So she decided to leave without the food we ordered when they refused to budge on the price. I waited a couple days to write this because all my other experiences here were awesome. I couldn't get it out of my head how much this place has changed so here I am... I ordered delivery and received the wrong order. Most of it wasn't even close, but I figured, meh - it's Chinn's, everything here is awesome. Apparently that changed. The seafood lo mein noodles were mushy and gross. I had to throw it away which is unfortunate because the only time I get to eat seafood is when my wife is away (allergies). The crab puffs had zero crab, although it's possible I thought I was eating crab puffs and got something else instead. The eggroll, which I didn't order was not up to Safeway's standards and I kinda thought maybe they actually came from there... The fried rice was mostly rice and didn't have the usual amount of meat and stuff I was used to from Chinn's, but it wasn't bad. I'm really disappointed. Gold Dragon was absolutly packed this Sunday evening when we went so we had heard Chinn's had improved..so we drove to the next parking lot. Place was mostly empty..two other groups at tables. Server was very nice. Order pot stickers first..OK they steam them..this is a good thing. I ordered there deluxe combo, daughter ordered the sweet and sour chicken Combo was a a mixed rating..the cashew chicken was OK, the pork fried rice good, sweet and sour chicken..batter too hard...fried shrimp the same..really like armor rather than batter. Daughter actually liked the sweet and sour chicken. Restaurant itself was clean if very dated. I was pleasantly surprised with a delicious Szechwan Beef dinner with Hot & Sour soup at Chinn's. The soup was tasty, perhaps a little salty, with good (but not fantastic) flavor. I was more impressed with the dinner - nice, tender, flavorful beef and fresh vegetables in a generously portioned dish. I'll definitely return to Chinn's to explore more of their menu. After many, many months of searching for even decent Chinese food in Salem, we finally struck gold. We were greeted by a friendly waitress who may as well (and may very well have been) the owner. She took excellent pride in amazing service and the quality of the food. She was friendly and chatty, but not overly so. Very attentive and helpful. We ordered a family combination and an individual combo plate, which came with all-you-can-drink hot tea and a cup of delicious soup. The egg flower soup was amazing and the tea was fresh-brewed, with just rather right balance. Not watered down like most places. The potstickers were perfection, the BBQ pork was incredible, and the egg roll took up half the plate, but was perfectly cooked all the way through. Then she brought our main courses. The "special fried rice" and truly special with perfectly cooked shrimp. The pork fried rice was amazing. We also had perfectly breaded sesame chicken, General Tao chicken, fried shrimp, and three family chicken/shrimp/beef. The sauces were spot on, the breading was the perfect density and crispness, and vegetables cooked awesome. Seriously everything was spot on. We are so over-the-moon to find a legitimately great Chinese restaurant in Salem, and not too far from home. Keep it up Chinn's...don't change a thing!!! read more

Let me start by saying I've been a loyal Chinn's customer for probably 15 or more years. I have been there many, many times and received good food with good service. I've taken my child care children there to get the whole 'Chinese food experience', been there with my friends and family and recommended them to others. They changed ownership maybe a year ago or more and I'm not sure who stayed with the business but I did notice some changes. The food has stayed consistent and is an ordinary, middle of the road Chinese food. Nice tasting food at a reasonable price. BUT last night I was disrespected and treated so badly that after being a loyal customer for such a long time I probably will never go back there again!! I walked into the bar on a Friday night at about 9:30pm. I saw and could hear customers in the dining room and there were 2 people in the bar on the poker machines. I walked to the bar, sat down and waited for a while before I was greeted. The woman greeted me with an attitude right from the get go!! I kind of knew what I wanted to eat since I've been going there forever but ordered a drink and asked for a menu to look at. I didn't know why she had such an attitude at that time. When I placed my order she rudely asked me if I wanted this for "here or to go" which I replied with "I'd like this for here" and was given more rude attitude!!! It was then that she told me they closed in 20 minutes. I told her "Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know you closed that early" but I understood. I told her that I didn't want to keep her and I would be quick and get on my way. With that being said, I had plenty of time to order a dinner and still be out of there by closing time. My meal was a combination meal which comes with a cup of soup. She brought me my meal and I had not been given, or even offered, my soup. I asked if my meal came with soup and she told me yes it did but that they were out of soup. Out of ALL the soup? Really??? She didn't even ask me what kind of soup I wanted, just that they were out!! When she brought me my meal she brought me a 'to go' box at the same time. I was good with that but had been treated so rudely I was a little bit annoyed by it. She put my plate down on the bar and never came back to check on me until she brought the bill. By this time I was angry by the way I had been treated at a place that I loved going to so I had my money ready to go so I could get out of there. I could have eaten some of my food, boxed it up, closed out my tab with a tip and been on my way near their closing time but was not given that opportunity. Don't get me wrong, I've worked in the food industry for many years and it's frustrating when it's close to the time you close, you're doing closing procedures and thinking about going home then people come in. But I always served my customers with respect, even near closing time! When you are open till 10pm that means you take orders until 10pm even if those customers are sitting in your dining room!! After boxing up my meal, paying the bill and getting ready to go on my way I knew I needed to say something to her. When I was leaving I walked into the dining room, which was empty by this time, and she was cleaning tables. I told her that I'd never been treated so bad by any server ever and that her service and attitude may be the reason I NEVER come back there again and I walked out of the restaurant to my car. On my way I heard something behind me and turned around. She was standing at the door with it open and was yelling something at me. I have no idea what she was saying to me, and quite frankly I could care less, but I couldn't believe that she followed me out of the restaurant to yell at me! (oh and on a side note ~ when I left, the 2 people who were on the poker machines were still on the poker machines playing. They weren't asked to leave!!!) I have loved the food at Chinn's for years, and the food is still good, but I will NEVER recommend them to anyone again. I will start by saying the service is really good. The woman who served us was super helpful with questions and also very nice. But the food was just okay in my opinion. I felt like all of the food lacked in flavor. Like it was a little bland. The crab puffs were very good though. They were made with real crab and tasted super fresh. Afterall, Salem is known as the Gourmet Desert of Oregon...and decent Chinese food is generally not something easily found in the vastness of a desert...but, there are exceptions...and Chinn's is one of them. As I understand it, about 12 years ago the Kwan family from Portland, bought Chinn out. Whether that was good or bad, I don't know...but what I do know is that if you're looking for very decent (not inspired, that's for sure) American-style Chinese food that is freshly prepared with a lot of soul, look no further. A friend and I were looking for a 1:30 p.m. lunch place in south Salem...a daunting proposition if fast food isn't on the map...and my friend suggested Chinn's. What the...but, but...it looks dreadful...ok, let's give it a try. Make no mistake this is old-style...not someplace you'd take a first date to! It's fairly large...a combo of booths and tables...simple, but very CLEAN. The waitress was friendly and explained how the "specials" worked. For lunch: a variety of sandwiches (including a very decent cheeseburger or a Chinese BBQ pork on toast sandwich...the pork is cooked in-house everyday) with fries for $2.50...yes, with fries. The Chinese special for this particular day: Spicy beef with pork fried rice...price $4. A very large plate of this freshly prepared dish arrived steaming hot with loads and loads of tender steak...oh my!! They have a very nice lunch trade (11am to 3pm)...seems to be a variety of folks...workers, retirees and just families...anyone searching for value is finding Chinn's! I cannot fault the meal...everything was delish and the portion size was generous...and the price is excellent. Dinner starts at 5pm. The usual cast of Chinese dishes is present as are dinner-sized portions of the lunch-time specials. Prices go up to $7.50 for upsized specials (no sandwiches available) with the addition of five (5) large deep-fried prawns. For another $1.50 you can get a shrimp roll tossed in...and for an extra buck you can get an extra plate to spit the whole thing amongst two...wow! If you're in the southern part of Commercial St...don't be scared to stop in and have a very good Chinese meal at a very keen price. You won't be disappointed. read more
