I went back for two helpings. My dad went back for three. It was SO delicious. My dad asked, "how much is 'so' anyway?" So fun. There's a huge buffet of frozen slices of meat (beef, pork, lamb, chicken), fish, and crab. A whole bunch (a lot) of veggies that were very well stocked and in such a fresh state. Sauces! So many sauces! Beware the hot red sauce. So satisfying. Next you get to watch the chefs cook your meal with their specialty tools and sprays and pours on a giant sizzling hot flat grill. I loved seeing what other people put together. So creative. Then, after curating your own collection of ingredients and oils and sauces, you get to choose toasted sesame seeds, nuts and more sauces. Horrible experience from start to finish. We came in to celebrate my grandmother's birthday and were met with a very rude, unwelcoming attitude from the lady working the front desk. I asked for my food to go, but also wanted to sit and enjoy some time with my family due to the occasion. That was apparently not an option, so my food was placed in a bag and left sitting at the front until it was time to leave. When I checked my food before leaving, the rice wraps were completely dried out from sitting in the bag. I politely asked for new ones, and the employee seemed visibly annoyed and upset that I even asked. My son and I always eat out after mass on Sunday and we wanted to try something different so we tried Mongolian grill so we pull up and walk . First impressions smiling young fresh woman and man well groomed and it was our first time there , they did give us run thru so we tackled it . Basically you would walk to this buffet and choose your pork or beef chicken your choice and all kinda vegetables sauces than you would bring to these gentleman who would stir fry for you and it was the bomb . D- Went to Chang's tonight. There were 6 of us + 1 baby. They didn't have a large table to sit is at. Not a big deal, or shouldn't have been. They flat out refused to split the group and sit us at two tables side by side. Said "the servers don't like that." " But, we will sit your group on two different sides of the restaurant." Even though there were tables that WERE in fact not occupied and sitting together. They told us that much. Just flat refused to sit is even on the same SIDE of the restaurant. They chose to completely loose $100+ sale, because they chose NOT to even try to be accommodating. They were rude. Extremely unprofessional in any way, which isn't really surprising for that establishment. Three of them stood there just talking about us audiblely. This restaurant has gone down hill so very badly. But, we have never had them be so flat out stupid as to choose to lose the entire sale vs sit people in booths beside one another for fear of bothering the server. We went to Changs for the first time on 12 / / 23 with our friends who had also never been there nor have ever been to any Mongolian restaurant. My husband and I have been to a few different Mongolian restaurants, but this one by far was the most unorganized, chaotic and disappointing experience we have ever had. First the restaurant is only open for specific lunch and dinner hours. We decided to go to dinner and I had a feeling it would be busy, so we got to the restaurant at 4:45 when they re-open at 5pm. When we got to the door, they had already opened and started to let people in. The employees were lost and confused. We assumed we knew how the process works, you get seated, drink orders are taken and then we are told that we can go get our food. But the server didn't feel like explaining that to us, what if we had never had Mongolian before? I swear there wasn't a manager to be seen, the staff was all teenagers thinking that because it's a buffet style, that people don't need to be attended to. By the time the server came to our table to take our drink orders, and we could go up to the fresh food buffet, the line was already so long, and the buffet was a mess. This was within 10 minutes. Unlike other Mongolian grill restaurants that have a 1 bowl limit, this was not the case. Some people had 3-4 bowls overflowing!!! These people acted like they have never had a meal in their life! You pay to be able to keep going back for more, I don't think people understood that or were too lazy. Because people were filling a trough full of food, the line moved so slow because so much food had to be cooked, it was ridiculous. It took at least 20 minutes of standing there watching people slide four bowls together down the counter, I couldn't believe it. Because this is common practice at this restaurant, the cooks are used to combining all of these people's bowls, and as a result they combined both my husband and my bowls which had vastly different ingredients. So, I had to be the a**h*le who had to go back and make a second bowl. I am sure everyone in line thought I was cutting the line. Because I don't eat like a cow, I only brought up one bowl, so I went back for a second bowl which was no faster than the first trip. It took forever. The restaurant really needs some improvements. Why not limit the number of bowls allowed per trip? Slightly bigger bowls? Why not stay open from opening at lunch until closing after dinner? This would take away from the chaotic cattle call. I would imagine lunch is just as busy. And better training for the staff. For $20.95 per person, you'd think that they would be making a killing, but I would imagine that the reason other restaurants have a one bowl limit is so people don't waste food and to cut back on the cooking times. The only plus was that the food that I ate was good, my friends didn't like it and because my husband's plate had two different plates combined, that had to be a hot mess. I am not sure that we will return which is really disappointing since there is only one Mongolian grill in Salem. read more

I don't know why this place gets such a bad wrap. I used to go when Changs when I lived in Portland too and enjoyed it every time. They are open for dine in and allow you to serve yourself again, and I received wonderful service. If you're trying to eat healthy, you can't really go wrong here! This place is the bomb. Food is great, and if it's terrible it's because of YOU-- you made your plate. The service is what you'd expect. It's a buffet style restaurant, they get your drinks, rice, wraps, soups, and ice cream at the end. Flag them down if you need to, no big deal. They aren't gonna wait your tables like normal because you get your own food. The place ambiance is great, albeit the only people who are ruining it are other customers. My family and I recently had the opportunity to stop in at Chen's. We were absolutely blown away by how excellent the customer service, food, and prices were. Lauren up front was super hospitable, and Galina was incredible. After they took the time to explain how Mongolian BBQ worked in the time of Covid, Galina helped us with our orders. Other reviews mention that the setup is similar to Subway, and they were absolutely correct. Galina walked us through every phase, and was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was so very friendly, welcoming, patient, funny, and professional. Had the food been terrible (it wasn't), we would've been back just to have seen her. You can't find people like her anymore--they are truly one in a million. Please, go eat here. Not just because they're local and could use it after the year we've all had, not because the food is delicious, but because you won't find a more welcoming, hospitable staff in the state. I want to give 4 stars really bad. Just having a hard time because I am thinking of all those busy times I have been waiting in line for over 30 min. Other than that we always have great service. Hard to screw the food up when you mix it yourself. Wish they were large enough to have another grill in there. I haven't really Been to other Mongolian Grills so I can't compare much. I generally get all meat with pineapple, onions, green onions, and jalapeños. You can mix you own sauce and make it as spicy as you want. I love that part! It is always difficult to meet dietary needs while traveling. Chang's gave us complete control over what we ate and how it was seasoned. The raw bar had a lovely selection of fresh veggies, meats, fish and shellfish, and even tofu. The saucy additions were not all salty and included sesame oil, ginger, garlic, cooking wine and many more. The staff was excellent. Everything was kept clean. And the cooks were polite and meticulous about separation of orders and cleaning the grill. You must patiently wait for the cooking. But it is well worth it. The meal comes with soup, rice (noodles are on the bar), wraps for mooshoo and even ice cream for dessert! We will return when next in Salem. read more

The secret to Mongolian BBQ, according to my husband who knows about these things, is to fill two bowls - one with veggies & sauce(s) and one with meat(s) and seafood, and have them grilled together, since the finished food is put on plates anyway. We didn't have any issues with ours being mixed up with anyone else's and the guys at the grill were pretty friendly for the most part. Chang's Mongolian Grill was very clean and wait staff were efficient, maybe not so friendly, but they got the job done. Our meal came with soup, rice, and "crepes," (basically mushu pancakes) that I loved wrapping my grilled veggies in. For $12.95, it's your own fault if you leave hungry. I loved all the fresh veggie choices available and the fact that very little oil is used too to grill your food. I'd go back if in the area again. Good value too, I'm a fan! read more

Choices of Meat Veg and Sauces is just ok when compaired to other places I have been. 4 Star food. 3 Star Food options. 5 star service. 1 star for having to stand in line 45 minutes to an hour each time I went up on a tuesday. About 1/3 full of people but crazy wait times. 2 plates of food took 3 hours total. I compair this to a place called Hu-Hots out east and mid-west. 5 times the choices of food. The cook top was large enough for 6 people to be cooking 4 to 6 meals. A line of 30 was through in about 7 minutes. You could actually eat multiple plates of differant foods read more

This place has the most horrible service staff ever! As soon as we entered with our small party of 3 and an infant, they tried to seat other people that came after us! When these other people kindly and appropriately informed them that we were here before them, they took us far into the back of the establishment and sat us at a table near the emergency exit when there tons of empty tables near the buffet line and the front entrance. When we tried to arrange the chairs to accommodate the infant carrier they immediately told us that we could not rearrange because we were seated near the emergency exit and therefore could be blocking it. Five minutes after we sit and began eating our food, the check was brought. We figured perhaps this is how they do it here and quickly paid the bill with a pretty nice tip thinking that it would prove we were paying appreciative customers that expected to be served like everyone else. HOWEVER, we were treated much worse! We had to ask for our ice cream 3 times over 15 minutes before it came! While we were eating and the baby was sleeping they began to vacuum right around our table, at 8:15pm when they clearly close at 9pm and had other customers seated away from us still eating! Chang's Mongolian Grill has been a steady favorite of mine for the past 20+ years. That being said this is the first and LAST time I will ever eat at this location. We arrived as soon as the doors opened so I was able to get my first plate right away. Since I'm diabetic I ordered my usual Diet Pepsi. By the time I went up to get my second plate the line was so long you couldn't even get halfway through either side of the buffet. I called it quits and left my husband standing in line while I went back to our table to go drink my pop. 2 1/2 "Diet Pepsi" later and I was starting to feel sick with the telltale hyperglycemia signs. After close to an hour of waiting in line my husband finally made it back to the table with his food. By this point my vision was getting fuzzy, which it shouldn't have been doing after eating only a small plate of meat and veggies with no sauce. He tried my pop only to find out it wasn't Diet Pepsi. After confronting the waitress she admitted it wasn't Diet Pepsi but regular Pepsi she gave me then had the AUDACITY to suggest my 10 year old must have switched my drink with his own. First, my son was drinking root beer not Pepsi and yes, I sure as hell can tell the difference between THOSE. And second, I can see how it could have been an honest mistake on her part until she tried to pass the blame. Or even tell me sooner about the mistake when I ask for a refill (I always be sure to specify diet) so I could have at least taken another dose of insulin before my blood sugar got too high!!! The waitress ended up refunding the price of my drink (how nice of her) and we left hungry. I legit can't tell the difference in taste between diet and regular Pepsi so I guess the moral of the story is don't order a drink period. I'd heard a few unsavory things about Chang's, but my stupid self thought "It couldn't possibly be that bad". There's too much to say about what I experienced, but I'll stick to the biggest problem. Mongolian Beef. I didn't know Mongolian Beef was just a fancy way of saying "Hot canned dog food". I took one look at the monstrosity and my soul left my body. Food is always great. One of my favorite places, but they really need to wipe things down. The light above our table has food splashed on it and so do the mini blinds.
