I hadn't ordered from John's for a while, so I thought I would give it another go. I may or may not have been drinking when I ordered for pick up around 9 PM The food was ready when expected. It seemed hot & fresh, except the hot & sour soup. It was super thick and congealed.. could have been because it was the end of the night, but it also lacked the "hot & sour" aspect. Not enough sour, not enough spice. Their egg rolls shouldn't be called egg rolls, they are more like spring rolls, due to their thin wrapper, small size and no meat or protein content. I will say the pork fried rice and barbecue pork were pretty good! The fried shrimp and crab rangoons were just ok, not bad but not amazing. Overall, OK. read more

Since this has changed ownership, the food is not as good as it used to be. They never brought us hot tea. I asked for my meal to be mild hot and it was HOT to where I had to send it back. I ordered something different that I had ordered many times and it just didn't taste the same as it did with the old owners. To top it off some of the vegetables were tough to chew, like they were dried and then cooked. Oh, I forgot to mention the fried rice used to be good, now you get some kind of browned rice that was super dry. My husband had teriyaki chicken and it was almost sweet and sour. All of the dishes we ordered were not made/cooked correctly. The moo shu pork wasn't made the right way. It was all diced cabbages and little bit of red bbq pork. No veggies like shittake mushrooms, carrots, green onion, etc. frankly, all of the food was AWFUL!!! We've eaten their dishes many times in the past and enjoyed it. We have been going to John's for almost 20 years. Since it first opened. It has always been great food, generous portions and the owners John and May were delightful people. A year or so ago they sold it to someone new. The food is still basically the same. The only thing I've noticed different is the hot sour soup, which is actually a little better, to tell you the truth. But all the other things are still very good. The problem is the price gouging. I understand inflation and most restaurants have raised their prices. But John's prices now are absolutely ridiculous. We eat Chinese food all the time, all over the city and actually all over the country as we travel a lot. They have literally almost doubled their prices. Their dinner special now only comes in a large instead of a smaller option. And it is $16.95. That's with steamed rice. They now charge extra if you want fried rice, you have to add an extra $1.95. So it ends up being I think $18.70 for a dinner entrée. That used to be$9.95. Then $12.95 and then it just made a huge jump. And again I understand inflation but it's just ridiculous. We have placed our last order with John's. Thankfully, there are lots of other good Chinese restaurants in town to choose from and much more affordable. We have been going to John's for over 20 years. We always enjoyed excellent Chinese food from Johns. I saw that they now take orders on line. However, they no longer have Dinner Specials. We love that, because we got what ever we want without having extra stuff added that we do not want. Since I could not get the online system to allow me to order what I want, I called Johns. I spoke to a nice lady who told me that they no longer have the dinner specials. So instead of getting what I want, she indicated that I would have to order combination plates that are $4-$6 higher each & has items I do not want. For example I wanted Mongolian beef & steamed rice. She informed me that I have to order a #8 combination, which includes fried shrimp. When I told her that I did not want the shrimp, she said the price is the same. My wife wanted Almond Chicken & fried rice. Instead she had to accept the shrimp also. When she opened her order, it had very little almonds in it. My son ordered the Chicken chow mein. Again it came with unwanted Shrimp & very little chow mein. My daughter in law ordered the sweet & sour chicken which was a #3 combination & you guessed it, included unwanted fried shrimp. So in total we paid $75 total for the order which is 20% higher than just a short time before & got product we did not want. We believe it has to do with the new ownership. I'm so glad that I came across this hidden gem! Given the recent inflation prices on nearly every other restaurant, John's Chinese Restaurant offers delicious quality food at a GREAT VALUE!! The food at this restaurant has such an authentic taste and appearance and they offer a diverse menu. The egg flower soup was rich in broth, not overpowering with chicken, and comes with oyster crackers. The pork fried rice was soft in texture yet rich in flavor, the Kung pao chicken includes fresh vegetables and has an authentic taste and marinade, the sweet and sour chicken is serve fresh with a fluffy fried crisp and a juicy lean chicken taste followed by sweet marinade. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. They have all these plaques inside about how amazing they are, but I placed a phone order and was told a time when it would be done. I showed up to get my food and was made to wait another 45 minutes before receiving it. The staff were obviously prioritizing the customers eating in as well as the drive thru customers. I felt very overlooked and ignored. The staff is rude and doesn't give you the time of day nor do they care about who came first. I won't be going back. I tried to speak to the owner of the restaurant about a problem I had with substitutions for special diets. The owner was unwilling to make any accommodations or substitutions for what they provide to their customer. I would not recommend going to this restaurant if you have special diets. They are unwilling to help you. I don't understand why somebody is still in the restaurant business if they are unwilling to help when it comes to your food needs. Especially if they have the item on their menu and they're unwilling to substitute it for a product that you don't eat. You're still paying the same price and the item that they have is still available if they would only be willing to take care of the customer. If you are a vegan a vegetarian or have special dietary needs I don't recommend this restaurant at all. I also believe that the person who owns this restaurant should look at this Yelp review very seriously and try to help out their customers. Rice and chow mein vegetables are cheap. So give me a heaping mound of it and I'll feel at least taken care of. The batter on the fried shrimp and sweet and sour was a little thick and something had a lingering taste of pickled ginger (which I hate) but overall the stuff on the plate was pretty delicious.
