You make your way to the second and third row of food and see plenty of meats that are so questionable you don't even want to look at what it's labeled. Came to great wall buffet for lunch, walked in and saw all the food that was prepared was freshly cooked. Everything look presentable and the warmers were all clean. The noodle cook was fast at making my noodles. And I was satisfied with what I ate. Only thing was the sushi bar could of had more selections and maybe a person there to make fresh wish I for us would be great. They should look into this. read more

I believe they have new owners and the difference shows. It's much cleaner than it used to be. The food is refreshed more often. The food tastes so much better. Waitstaff is courteous and attentive. A better job of managing kids whose parents go MIA is done and the whole experience is very positive. Having been to a few, I would say that The Great Wall is better that your average Chinese buffet. Sesame chicken is pretty good and the crab rangoon is tasty along with most of the buffet offerings. Go for lunch - crab legs served at dinner pretty much suck and are scarce. read more

For all of those people who love it so much, might I suggest that you check out thier helath inspection scores on the Marion County website? Yeah. I'm not a big fan of buffets, and even less a fan of Chinese buffets. All lukewarm overly sweet, overly cooked, mush. Ewwwww. I was invited to lunch with some friends and was dreading the meal, but was pleasantly surprised by the Great Wall. The choices were numerous, including other Asian cuisines besides just Chinese. The food was hot, the place clean, and the service decent. I certainly wouldn't drive to Salem just to eat here, but now that I've been I wouldn't shy away from it if invited again. read more

My friend and I were exploring in Salem and we were getting hungry for a bite to eat. We happened upon this place called the Great Wall Buffet and I think it was called a Great Wall for a reason. Everything was bland tasting, The selection was meh and the service was even worse and I cannot describe the food quality in polite company. They had sushi, my favorite, but it was foul tasting filled so much with rice I cannot honestly see how they could even call it sushi. We arrived at that awkward time just after lunch and into dinner and they put the "good stuff" out but that was equally disgusting. In the back of my mind I was thinking you get what you pay for but the dinner food was just as bad as the lunch food and was not worth the increased price for the dinner food and for the increased price of the meal it was certainly not worth it. The service was sub standard and they only came by to remove the dishes and hand us the bill, even when I left my empty cup to suggest a refill of my beverage (a hint to most dining establishments to ask for a refill without asking) they just ignored it. If you are considering going here don't, there are better values in Salem and if you have to go over the "Great Wall" for a unlimited buffet at a fantastic value and great service you will receive neither. read more

My first time here was unexpected. My parents and I were visiting family members in Salem, Oregon and my uncle decided to take out for dinner. We were seated really quickly, but unfortunately we were seated in a location that looked like a storage unit for their unused chairs. The food was mediocre and what they had serving was obviously expected at a Chinese Restaraunt and or Buffet. They also had roasted beef brisket and even sushi which got me really excited but was disappointed by taste. Otherwise friendly service and of you're in for a big meal but quick bite, then recommended. If you're looking for good food then I wouldn't come here. read more

Whatever Yelp reviewer said this place has a great gluten free menu and vegan desserts is not smart. This place doesn't even know what gluten or vegan means. I told them I can't have their soy sauce that isn't gluten free, which they put on all their veggies, so all I could eat was white rice and fruit. They pointed at the fried rice and said I could have it only to discover tiny pieces of scrambled egg. I do not recommend this place for gluten free vegans. FYI, I didn't choose this place. Ate there when we were in town. Food was ok but the service was great. Don't know our waitress's name but do know her mother was part owner. She was a hard worker and very friendly. She hustled all the time taking care our many many tables. The other waiter in the next section was not as busy and just sat around on his phone and didn't help her one bit. If i was the manager he would have been fired. Restaurant was a little dirty but it was Sunday evening and there were a lot of people so i can accept it. Food was hot and plentiful. I have eaten here a few times and I am blown away each time. Their food has so much flavor in every bite. They take some of the most ordinary foods that we eat every day and they turn it into something that you would kill someone for. One of my favorite things that they serve is a fried Banana, thats right, I said a banana. There are so many other choices if I tried to go over them all you'd be reading this for hours. So I will just stick with saying that this is one of the best places to eat if you are in Salem and you are hungry. not to mention I believe it is like $18 per person for all you can eat including the wheelbarrow they drag you out on. 5 stars easy. read more

Will NEVER return. When you walk in, you see garbage right inside the front doors. As you walk to your table, there is garbage and food all over the floor. At first I chalked this up to the fact that they were pretty busy and figured they hadn't had time to run a carpet sweeper around. The food was bland and over-priced. By the time we finished our meal, several of the wait staff were just standing around or sitting at a table chatting and eating. The place was nearly empty at that point. Only saw one waitress trying to clear all the tables. Even the walls were dirty. Within about 7 hours the three of us that had eaten there were sick. I don't know if the food was the reason, but with the lack of cleanliness, I'm not going to discount it either. Wish I had thought to look here before eating there! Good selection of food like many Asian buffers ... like others have mentioned, skip the desserts --very bland and nothing very good. But what you really want to avoid are the bathrooms. Both times I went multiple toilets were overflowing, staff was walking through the nasty floor, trash was overflowing and no soap. I got a carry out container from a friendly gentleman at the front counter at set off to the buffet. I was fairly pleased with the fresh appearance of the food, but their warming trays could be a bit warmer. As far as selection, they had all the sinful staples I was looking for: Yakisoba, Chicken in the notes of sesame, general tso's, peanut butter, black pepper, broccoli, BBQ meats on a stick, egg rolls, BBQ spare ribs as well as a selection of seafood that was more extensive than most buffets. They also have a Mongolian grill type section and a decent looking salad bar. I stuck to the sticky chickens and yakisoba and they were all pretty tasty. My lady friend was happy with the seafood and we paid about $25 for all we could stuff in our boxes. The place seemed pretty clean but we didn't use any plates or silverware, and we got take out so I can't comment on table service. I tend to be a harsh critic of the food in this town, but when I need the Chinese Buffet, I'll be happy to go back to Great Wall. read more

Don't go to the Great Wall Buffet after 7pm even though they close at 9 sometimes 10 they charge you full price but they won't put out more food, what's there is all you get if it runs out oh well it doesn't get replaced. They won't give you drink refills. Heck they don't give refills at all. And they don't remove the dirty dishes from your table they just let them pile up till you leave. read more

Honestly, the food is ok at best and the customer service is horrendous, I say a worker put food from the counter back with the rest of them. That should definitely be a health violation. Crab legs are basically non-existent since there's almost never any whenever you go to get them and they never care to put any more in. Staff is not very friendly. They did not refill tea, and the waitress did not help me get a high chair. I had to help myself. The oil they use seems not great quality. My family and I started going to Great Wall when it first opened and usually enjoyed it. At the time the food was good and the service was ok. We finally stopped going a couple of years ago after seeing the following: 1) an employee scoop up food that had been dropped on a serving counter and put it back in the serving tray, 2) a child step in front of a line of people waiting for the soft-serve ice-cream machine and grab ice-cream with his fingers right off the machine's nozzle (where were his parents?), 3), the towels used for cleaning the tables were always laying on the tops of the short walls behind some tables/booths, just inches away from people's heads. All of this said much for the overall cleanliness of the place and we simply could not go back. read more

The management changed recently, the food is hotter, fresher, and more tasty. I love the new selections too. Got to taste some this past weekend and I was so excited to go and overall pleased. They installed new T.V's but they only played soccer and I am not sure if it was live or a rerun but I don't like sports while I am eating so that was neither here nor there for me but, somebody might love it! I use to eat here a couple of times a month but less often as the food seems to be less fresh and of lower quality. Yesterday I went for lunch and after getting a plate of food I noticed an unusual and offensive smell that was practically strong around the the front service station that to me and my dining partner smelled strongly of urine and spoiled food, possibly meat or fish. I Know to expect loads of MSG in these sorts of places and asked the hostess what does not have MSG? and she barked "I don't know!" as I get a reaction to MSG I tried to stick to just steamed rice, Salmon, non-fish sushi, some fried egg stuff and rice noodles, but soon after I noticed the classic symptoms of MSG reaction. I would say the other dishes may be loaded with MSG and likely made from only the cheapest indigents. Dishes are heavy coated and seasoned, dry and on the whole not very fresh or healthy. The dining, restroom, and service areas are becoming increasingly dirty and grimy, and from a couple views I glimpsed of the food preparation areas they appear pretty neglected as well. Right in the center of of the dining area was a 5 gallon bucket full of smelly and filthy water with an equally appalling mop in plain view. Right beside it was a chuck-full waste bin full of old refuse and dried food. My table and seat with plenty of food scraps under and around the booth. Service used to be ok and now seems understaffed and neglectful, and can even be unfriendly. Having lived in China and Southeast Asia I'm willing to overlook and even risk some marginal standards of cleanliness, and quality if the food or service is decent but China Buffet has fallen below what I would feel comfortable patronizing even in less modern areas of China. The food seems totally unhealthy and the careless attitude of the staff and neglect of the most basic aspects of cleanliness are appalling, and this leaves me to question if anyone at Marion County Health is active in enforcing standards. I looked online and see that China Buffet continually failed state health inspections. I do recall they were closed for weeks a year or two ago and I wonder if they were closed for health reason and as hey again failed only three months ago if they should be again.
