freshly made appams on portable stoves atop their serving line...complex cooking in a fast-food setting
Prairie S.

A fast-food restaurant in an old mall serves up excellent south Indian delicacies made hot and fresh, like in a home kitchen. The flow of the establishment leaves a lot to be desired. Ordering and pickup are at the same spot --with partially completed orders sitting out and the lady behind the counter encouraging you to take whatever is prepared and return for the rest-- this causes crowds, confusion, and errors. Health issues? Multiple people talking over your prepared food as it sits waiting for a pickup. Backed up orders create chaos. Such a shame. I can see the cooks are hustling so hard making food. But without a well-organized flow their valient culinary efforts can go awry with missed items in orders and cross contamination. I have gone back multiple times to eat appam (unusual rice flour pancake from Kerala) with their black channa curry. However, if I could I would like to find a more capably managed restaurant. The Goan fish curry, appam and kaddala curry, the dosas are all noteworthy. The satisfaction marred only by the lack of organization, and their complex board of menu items reflects this. Kudos to the customers who are unfamiliar with Indian food -- and courageously order items! I rounded up to 4 STAR because I don't have the heart to ding the hardworking cooks at this establishment...churning out authentic tasting south Indian delicacies :)

Masala dosa

This is located in the Crossroads food court. There are a lot of Indian options here but since I was craving some Dosa, this one stood out. Masala Dosa (4): Dosa was good. Crispy and thin. The sauces and curry were pretty good as well. Decent size too. Overall, decent spot since they have a large offering of flavors and seem to execute well. I'd come back to try more of their menu.

Appam and Veg Kurma
Roshni A.

Chakra is located in a food court in Crossroads. They serve South indian food and are usually pretty busy. Their Biryanis and dosas are supposed to be quite famous. However, I tried the appam and Veg kurma. Firstly, the price is very reasonable and they have a good selection. The food was good but not the best appams I've had. If you're craving appam then give this place a try!

Restaurant in food court

This is a restaurant in the food court in a mall. So parking is not a concern. We were the first ones there on a weekday and can see some of the dishes being prepared. We clearly communicated that it would take 20 minutes. While we were there, we could see orders pouring in some non Indians but Asians ordered dosa straightway, looks they are familiar. We ordered Set Dosa It was 3 big dosa with chutney and sambar. Chutney was refrigerated, but sambar was fresh and hot. Sambar Vada It came with 2 vada in sambar with fresh onion and cilantro as garnish. Some of the other reviews had conveyed that the vada was dense. We were there when they fried them and figured out the reason. They are not refrying the vada. The problem was that they were using refrigerated batter. When you refrigerate vada batter, all the air in the batter is lost. Hence, it becomes dense. I hope they fix it. Pongal, it was mushy but tasted good, though. Veg Combo with parotta, veg kuruma, and paneer tikka masala and rice. Parotta was freshly made, and the sides were good. Coffee was good, too. There is not much to talk about ambiance as it is in food court. Overall, a few fixes have great potential to shine. Sorry, I forgot to take food pictures.

Filter Coffee

Not really a great fan of this place. Their Filter Coffee is great though - I always come here just to have filter coffee. My reservation about this place comes after trying out their Chettinad Chicken. I was really hopeful about getting good Chettinad flavor from Chakra but was bitterly disappointed. The gravy was thin, chicken was not good - the balance of coconut seemed off. One of my friends cooks a better Chettinad Chicken than this restaurant.

Onion masala dosa and vada

Ordered onion masala dosa and vada. Both came piping hot, with tomato chutney, coconut chutney and sambar. Dosa was very big. Extremely fresh and well made. The vadas were nice and crispy. The only thing was the tomato chutney felt a little stale. But overall good food and satisfied taste buds.

Hands down the best dosa we have had in the state. :) the masala dosa (with potatoes) were amazing. Big portion, light, tasty and filling. Service was very fast. We would be back!

Madurai Mutton

Came here for a quick dinner and was amazed with the quality and taste of food here . Being inside a mall, I thought it would be "yet another " Indian restaurant, but I was wrong ! This is a typical Madurai style restaurant. South Indian foood was ultimate . We started off with a chicken pepper fry . It was good . Could have been more spicy , but tasted good . For our main course we ordered seeraga sambaa rice mutton biryani ... it was ultimateeeeeeeeeee.. superbbbb food . One of the best biryanis I have ever had . We also ordered parotta with mutton curry . Out of the world too .. very spicy and authentic taste . Had veg biryani . It was ok . And Vada was good . Overall - non veg was ultimate . Veg was ok . I thought of giving 5/5 , but had to give 4/5 because of the slightly below taste of veggie dishes ! I'll surely recommend it to others ..

Apollo Fish

The nearest restaurant for our "mallu" Kerala. What we love are the Kerala Parotta. The first time I ordered, was happy to see that they did not reheat Parotta from a frozen one but prepared on a hot tava. We ordered the Parotta combo with Madurai Mutton and another one with Pallipalayam Chicken curry. Both of these tasted good but they were very oily. Strangely, both of them had the same flavor and tasted similar. We also ordered Chilly chicken and Apollo Fish. Apollo Fish was good, the chilly chicken was little dry.

Nadan Mutton Curry

Loved the sauce and tenderness. I do find it a little expensive, almost $18, for a food court serving.

Goat Vindaloo and Roti with Raita and Plain Rice
Kishi M.

Location: This is a food stall in the middle of the Crossroads Mall food Court. Took some time to get the directions right... Menu: Mostly South Indian Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian items Order: Came to this place to try a 'combination' as shown on Yelp menu but the menu didn't have those combos listed. Ordered Goat Vindaloo and Roti. Asked for Poha to-go which they didn't have, asked for Chaas which they didn't have either. Asked them if they had any yogurt item and they said No.. later on I went and asked if they had raita and they guy said 'yes'... errrr.... You said you had no yogurt items ... then what is raita... he gave me a small portion and didn't charge me for it, which was kind of him... Taste: - The roti was made right in front of me in a tandoor and the taste was Lovely, you could tell that the atta they used was fresh - I was expecting the Vindaloo to hit me with a punch but no such luck. It lacked spice, salt and a kick - The raita was in a small 'chutney' portion but tasty nevertheless Service and Experience: For ONCE I would like to go to the opening of a NEW Indian Restaurant (being of that ethnicity myself) and see them do something ENTIRELY DIFFERENT... but no such luck... would like some new establishment to pride itself in having the best service or live music sometimes or a core menu of limited items but REALLY REALLY TASTY... a little disappointing to see that this is just another indian food place that is indistinguishable from other similar establishments... Will come here again to try south indian menu items like Poha or Dosa among others and re-review...

I'd say overall, the menu was a little pricey, but they've got some pretty unique offerings. Parking is pretty easy as it's a shared lot with crossroads. Malaiyo is effectively just textbook light, whipped cream with a ton of saffron. They definitely don't skimp on the saffron, so if you enjoy that floral, slightly herbal flavor, this will be the dessert for you. Jalebi Rabri came out piping hot and it's got a crunch that once you bite through, the sugar syrup just gushes out. It's definitely tasty, but it was SO sweet. I'd probably put in an order and share this with a group as more than one in a sitting might be a bit tough. Banarasi Lassi was just a little tart, creamy, and had a little bit of saffron swirled through. It had just a touch of the floral saffron flavor and the sliced almonds on top were a nice touch. It's definitely on the thicker side, so more of a spoon situation than a drink.

As for mains,my friends and I shared gorakhpuri kofta which was tasty and shadi wala matar paneer which was average. I didn't like tamatar ki chaat. The food was decent and chaas was really good but nothing was so good that I'd be thinking about it the next day. If you go, get the smokey soya chaamp and keep expectations chill for everything else.
