The building itself doesn't even show on Google Maps, and it certainly doesn't look like much from the outside, but we decided to trust the online reviews when looking for food after a drive over from Moab - definitely a good call. They had outdoor seating available and our server, Vincent, did a great job. The food was freshly prepared and looked and tasted amazing - only regret was that we had no space left for desert. :) read more

Excellent Mexican food. We had a group of 7 and had a variety of different foods from tacos, fajitas, burritos, and quesadillas. The staff was great. The food was high quality and had great flavors. Definitely recommend if your in Capitol Reef. read more

Chak Balam - Mexican Near Me - Torrey, Utah

Honestly knockout Mexican food. Our 3 meals split 4 ways filled us to the brim. Truly tasty Mexican food loaded with flavor. Don't be mislead by the humble outside appearance. This place is a roadside gem. Kudos to our waitress Amanda who went out of her way to recommend the dishes. We were only in town for a day while traveling to Capitol Reef, then Moab, or we would be back read more

Chak Balam - Tri mex fajitas, chicken, beef, shrimp - Mexican Near Me - Torrey, Utah

We ate at Cham Balam while visiting Capitol Reef NP. It's a great Mexican restaurant! The salsa and queso are incredible and tasted homemade. We had the mixed fajitas (shrimp, beef, chicken) and really enjoyed it! The fajitas were piled high with lots of veggies and meat and served on their tasty flour tortillas. Service was a bit slow but they were slammed. However, to make up for the slowness they offered free salsa and chip refills. We were happy and would eat here again! read more

The most authentic Mexican restaurant close to Capitol reef national park. The owners are from Mexico and they cook the food themselves. That's what makes this place so good. The seasoning and flavors to their food is beyond good. I lived in Mexico for all of 2019 and this is just as good as eating in Mexico. Ask for the grilled jalapeños, they are great !!!! And the queso blanco appetizer is legit. Keep in mind this is a family owned and ran business so please be kind and generous with your reviews and tips. read more

We ordered take-out during our road trip and the food was very good. We would dine here again if we pass through Torrey.

Definitely left disappointed from here when it comes to the food. The ingredients were low quality, the salad was so sad, and overall it was very lackluster. The service was good. read more

This Mexican restaurant came highly recommended to us by our camp host. Do not be deceived by the humble appearance of the outside of this restaurant. We were greeted by the host and seated promptly. The restaurant was pretty packed for the entire time we were there. We had two great margaritas, a variety of tacos, fantastic queso and chips, and a chicken enchilada Mole dish. All I can say is Yum! yum! Yum! I am Mexican and know good authentic Mexican food and this place is amazing! Efrain was our waiter and was especially attentive and friendly! If you're in the area and have to stop for food, don't miss this gem! read more

Cute place, Looks are deceiving, looks like a hole in the wall. Food and service were great.

Don't let the outside discourage you from going in. It's a small but very cute and clean restaurant, nicely decorated with good tasting food and very good service. read more

Small authentic Mexican restaurant in the middle of nowhere. I stayed in the Capitol Reef area for 2 days and literally ate here every meal. The octopus tacos, shrimp fajitas, tortilla soups and enmoladas are all really good. Only thing to be aware of is that wait time can be quite long (1-1.5 hour from the time you get a seat) if the restaurant is full. So best advice is to come early before the dinner rush hours (5:30-8:30 pm) read more

We were so happy to find this restaurant. The building is not impressive, but the food is heartwarming. We had the fajitas and the enchiladas. We are not Mexican, but the food seemed pretty authentic to us. The staff was extremely friendly as well. read more

I ate dinner here last night and it was so good I came back for breakfast. For dinner, I'd recommend the battered fish tacos and the battered shrimp tacos! The portions are filling and the food is fresh. However, this morning the breakfast made me want to write a review. Their breakfast burritos are amazing! Perfectly cooked and they are huge. I'd highly recommend them for any meal of the day if you're passing through. read more

Very nice and clean interior. The staff is super friendly too. The food here is fabulous. Same for the horchata. Would highly recommend!

Chak Balam means "jaguar". Lovely people here and someone in the back is making homemade everything. They had vegetarian versions of most dishes (because it was being made fresh as near as I could tell - easy enough to leave out the meat). Anyhow, my veggie tamale was super tasty (and I'd barely heard of a veggie tamale). The salsa was fresh. The spicy sauce was nice and spicy (and wasn't just something in a bottle from a store). Chak Balam doesn't look like much from the outside but has some of the best food in the area. Note that Yelp has the location slightly wrong - the restaurant is right near the main road. read more

Don't be put off by the exterior of this Mexican restaurant. It is small (about 9 tables). I had the Enmolladas. The mole sauce was excellent, the portions large. My husband had chicken tamales with sides of rice and beans - very good! For dessert we had sopapillas which were drizzled with honey and served with a scoop of ice cream. Overall it was a far cry from your standard Mexican dinner. Highly recommend! read more

The queso is amazing, Attentive waiting staff Good food Somewhat slow on beverages, most likely due to regs Pro tip: do not set close to front door as you will be sitting steps from both restrooms read more

Nice atmosphere with excellent service. Food was a little bland and definitely not TexMex. Both of us added hot sauce to give our dishes more flavor. read more

Had lunch here today based on a fellow hiker's recommendation. Well worth the visit--great place for outstanding authentic Mexican/Mayan food (Chicken Molé, tamales, etc--not your usual Mexican-American fare, oozing with refried beans). Wonderful ambience, courteous and prompt service. Very convenient, on the main road in Torrey (en route Capital Reef National Park). if you're tired of hamburgers and French fries, this is a terrific find! read more

What do I even say. This place is amazing. Stopped by for lunch and had the soy chorizo burrito with a side of mole and let me tell you...all of the food was damn delicious but I will add that this mole rips. This was easily among my top 3 favorite Mexican food experiences. Some folks gave feedback saying that the service was not great... I had the opposite experience. We were served by Vincent who was attentive and overall spectacular. Also very affordable. PLEASE GO AND SUPPORT THIS MAGICAL GEM OF A PLACE read more

Very friendly and helpful service. We ordered takeout and thought the food was alright. But then again, takeout fajitas isn't really the best option to really enjoy the dish for what it actually is. Cute little restaurant and a good place to stop by if you're in the area read more

If you are in the mood for Mexican Food, don't pass by Chak Balam outside Capitol Reef. Don't judge the lest-than-inspiring outside. Inside it's very clean and nicely decorated. Food is outstanding and moderately priced. You won't be sorry. read more

Stopped by today for lunch and had some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. The queso was delicious and was a great addition on top of the fajitas mixta we got. Wonderful Mexican spot. This is a family owned place with great service. The meals are great portion sizes. The food is beautifully presented and tastes even better. Food and service were exceptional. Don't judge a book by its cover. Best Mexican we've had in a while.

Hands-down the best Mexican food I've had in Utah. Definitely be sure to ask for the house hot sauces!

Was enjoying my veggie taco until I got to the end of it and found a black hair entangled in it. Not mine, I'm grey. I give the one star for the way the server handled it. I pointed out the problem and our server took away my plate. When my party of 4 was done and the bill came the waiter insisted that I pay for the taco. Generally when something like that happens, the manager will come out and apologize and take the item of the bill. But not here. I did not dispute the rest of $80 tab, only the $6 for the taco. What kind of place does this? read more
