We ate dinner here for our two nights in Torrey. Prices were reasonable, and food was good and plentiful. The free salsa and chips were the best I have had. The salsa tasted so fresh and good - and I don't even like tomatoes. Nice choices of tequilas and margaritas. Drinks were reasonably priced as well. I had the pulled pork and sope which came with refried beans and rice. The pulled pork was a bit cool. Husband had the chicken mole which had a bit of spice to it. He was impressed with the amount of chicken given. Second night, the food all came temperature-wise hot and was hearty, good, and filling. This excellent eatery is a real diamond in the rough just outside of Capitol Reef National Park in Torrey, UT. My wife and I are regular foodies here in Los Angeles and we know good food, great atmosphere, and excellent service when we stumble across it. (Try the melt-in-your-mouth Carnitas!) The owner Art (who also owns the clean and cozy Noor hotel right behind the restaurant) is a warm and gracious host who took time to talk to us after our meal, and his politely delivered lesson on tipping in America (to a table full of young and clueless French hikers who were getting ready to leave) was a master class on how to tactfully deal with stingy foreigners before they slip out the door. The guy clearly takes care of his employees. As unlikely as it sounds, this gem of a restaurant is on par with some of the best Mexican restaurants we've eaten at here in Los Angeles - a virtual Mecca of South-of-the-border cuisine. If you find yourself anywhere near Capital Reef National Park, treat yourself to some of the best Mexican food you're likely to find anywhere in Utah. read more

La Cueva is a terrific place for casual Mexican food. The staff is friendly and super efficient. We ate here on a weeknight where patrons are lined up to get in. The wait staff did a great job taking care of everyone. They are generous with the food, too. We ate here on two occasions during our visit to Capitol Reef NP. We've had the enchiladas, the pork in green salsa plate, the burrito, and the toastada salad. The pork in green salsa is very good. It's tender and flavorful. Every dish we had was good. Spending the night in Torrey, Utah and wanted something a little different. Stubbled upon this place and could not have been more impressed. The man at the front seating guests and serving people was so nice and helpful. After having some delicious chips and salsa, the burritos we ordered were the best we've had. The rice and beans it came with were also great. The portion sizes were excellent and overall cannot recommend this place enough. The restaurant was packed when we came in, including a table of 13 that was waiting on their food. The servers and staff worked their tails off to provide excellent, accurate and friendly service. It was just OK. The people and the service was very nice. But the restaurant is a bit rundown and the food was just meh. We were greeted very heartily by a nice Mexican gentlemen and it gave us high hopes. The waitress was unbelievably nice. We ordered the Pork Sopes and the Shredded beef flautas. Everything had a lot of meat, and the sopes were pretty good. But the beef flautas needed some zip. The beef had a smidge of flavor but the tortillas were undercooked and the whole thing was just not good. Being from a state where Mexican food is prevalent, this just wasn't so great. We selected La Cueva for dinner after a day at Capital Reef due to the high Yelp rating. Unfortunately we didn't have a similar experience. The restaurant is in an old fast food restaurant. We went to the front door but couldn't get in even though it was after 5 pm. We started to leave but was able to get a waiter's attention through the window. He met us at the door and realized someone had undone the contraption used to keep the doors unlocked. The dining room was decorated in a typical Mexican restaurant way. Red and green walls, a bulls head and sombreros on the wall with dark wood tables and chairs. The bar had a unique feature of using saddles for the bar stool seats. Our waiter seemed to be overwhelmed. We ordered two soft drinks and the guacamole appetizer. First he brought our drinks then a little later brought us salsa and chips. I asked if the guacamole was going to be out soon to which he replied that is extra. I reminded him we ordered it earlier. To the guy's credit whenever we had this type of conversation he remembered and corrected the situation quickly. The salsa and guacamole were okay. Both were mild. The chips could use some salt. For dinner we ordered the chorizo burrito and the bisteak de mexicana. My husband enjoyed his burrito. I enjoyed the steak which I found to have a kick to it. At one point the waiter brought out a mexicana salad. When I pointed out we didn't order it he immediately realized what happened and took the salad away. We did later have to ask for him to remove the salad from the bill but he did that without hesitation too. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! We went here as we were travelling through Utah and visitng the Mighty Utah 5 (Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce and Zion). We were staying in Torrey for one night and decided to go to this restaurant and had a horrible experience. It was my son's birthday and he picked mexican cuisine. This being a small town, and us being vegetarians, I thought this might be a good option. They were not super busy when we got there..but had to wait 10-15 mins to be seated. We were seated in a corner booth by the right side of the restaurant. It was 4 of us, myself, my wife, and 2 kids (5 and 7). Next 15-20 mins go by and no one comes to take our order, bring us drinks, chips and/or Salsa. I get mistakes get made, but even after bringing this to the manager or owners attention, nothing changed in the service. The server comes and takes our order and was somehow visibly irritated that I had complained about the way we were treated. What followed this initial interaction was the worst customer service I have ever experienced. We ordered enchiladas for the kids. I was not warned that the enchilada sauce is a bit on the spicy side even though I had mentioned its for the kids. So, once we got the food, I called the server over and asked her to see if they have non-spicy sauce? She said they do not. As I was explaining that its spicy for my son, and trying to figure out what other options they have that may not be spicy on the menu (I was willing to pay for the 2nd dish), she just walked away in middle of the conversation like I was wasting her time. No one from the restaurant came to check on us for the rest of our meal to see how the food was or if we needed anything more. My son didn't even eat anything as it was pretty spicy for him. Our food was also mediocre at best. I was so mad that my son had to essentially stay hungry on his b'day. We ended up going to a different restaurant to get them fed. Food was excellent. I had a chicken quesadilla and it was one of the best I have ever eaten. Service was good and atmosphere was very nice.

We stayed at the Noor Hotel in the same lot and they looked like they had the same owner since they were hiring for both the restaurant and hotel. We waited 5 minutes to be seated and then about 10 minutes for our food, so the service is pretty fast. For a Sunday night, it was pretty busy with most tables full. Everyone enjoyed their food for the most part, which included the salsa chicken, chicken mole, chimichanga, burrito, enchiladas, and steak. Our food came with a free first round of chips and salsa for the table, which was very fresh, and we also ordered guacamole. Everything tasted authentic and high quality. The steak was cooked well done, the enchiladas had great sauce, the chicken mole and chicken salsa had really rich flavors but the people eating it thought it was a bit too much. The chimichanga was really rich because it was fried but the pork in it was tender. The portions are generous enough for leftovers. The only thing I will say is that the prices are high, about $18-23 for each entree, and although the portions were big for the entrees, the guacamole was a bit small and so the prices are a bit high. I didn't understand the fine print about there being only two soda refills. I also didn't see on the menu (maybe it was really small print) that there is an 18% service fee for parties of 6 or more that they tacked on and then provided another tip line after we got our receipt. But overall, being from California and having had my fair share of Mexican food, the food here is really authentic and amazing! read more

There are VERY limited options in this area, so considering this, I suppose you could look upon this place even more favorably. But taking that fact out, the inside is pretty sad. There is a giant metal gate behind the bar and it is attached to a gas station. The chips were very bland and almost a little stale, as well as the salsa. The guacamole was actually very tasty and the margaritas were great as well (but beware they are strong). Our server was very kind and attentive. I got the Chile relleno and it was very oily but had decent flavor. My husband got the chimichanga and it was actually very good. One thing you might consider is that they only have one bartender and one server. So we had to wait for a while after sitting down for the only server to come to us. Not great but it's one of the only options outside of Capital Reef Park. For instance- Chips were greasy and stale, salsa was watery and tasted like it had oregano instead of cilantro, the chicken tortilla soup didn't come with half the ingredients noted in the description and was very grainy and the enchiladas with red sauce were questionably covered in pasta sauce. Plus the margarita was essentially watered down salt water- it was so so salty. Service was inattentive as well. Two stars for being open on a holiday (Thanksgiving) and the restaurant was at least clean with decent decor. read more
