Food was really delicious and flavorful! We definitely found our new go to spot for Thai food 20mins before closing. I appreciate them taking us on short notice. Our server named Mony was really nice. She was so attentive with great customer service. She always asked how we were doing, packed our food (who does that?!), treated us like family, was very warm and welcoming, jokes, and plated the food elegantly on the table. Mony, being the only server, was so hard at work taking care of all the patrons with lots of warm kindness and care. Her care towards customers was more superb than other restaurants that considered themselves five star. Overall, great food and fantastic customer service. Decided to try this place on a Friday night after reading the stellar reviews on Yelp. Since I was in the strip mall, decided to walk-in and order on the spot. There was only person (it appears to be the owner) working the phone orders, register and waiting the tables. Long line at the register and phone rang non stop. She made me wait when I was ordering to get more phone orders. I was told it'd take 30 min for the orders. Came back and waited another 15 min. Owner gave me the food and sent me away without asking for payment. I told her I had to pay before leaving. Now the disappointment: the bag had only the two orders. No condiments, no utensils, no napkins. Had to get them from somewhere else. The Pad Thai was dry and bland. The Pad See Ew was so spicy that my mounth was numb. I had ordered medium spicy. It is really disappointing that after waiting 10 min to order, then 45 min more for the food, I could not even finish my food because it was so bad. Definitely not recommended. read more

His: If I could give this place 100 stars, I would! When I walked in, my wife was nursing our newborn in the car and our service dog was with her. I asked the lady at the front counter if I could get the order started to make it easier on my wife and she was more than happy to -- she even reserved a table for us and got to our order right away. We asked for a few things that weren't even on the menu and she made them happen for us! When my fam got inside, she brought my dog water, and made sure my wife was completely comfortable. We had a conversation about dogs and life in general. She also tended to the other guests in the restaurant equally and was very hospitable to every person who came through the door-- genuinely thankful for their business and seeing them in and out with a beautiful smile :) I'm not sure if Monnie owned the place but she made it feel like home. The food was amazing-- Pad Thai, chicken for the little dude, sweet and sour chicken, rangoons-- it was all delicious! Honestly, I wanted to leave this review because we just sold our home and are crossing the country to find a new one; this was our very first stop and she made us feel like we weren't in California anymore. She was so great and her amazing service and hospitality is the focus of my review more than the food... which was amazing, again... Even as we left, Monnie went, without me asking, for a lid to the container we used as a water bowl for our dog... almost a week later and we are still using it! Yum! Loved the BBQ grilled pork. Definitely used both dipping sauces for a phenomenal flavor explosion. The nam pla prik or spicy chili lime sauce gave the meat heat while the nam chim kai or sweet chili sauce added sweetness. Server said they used pork loin so the meat was fairly lean and not as tender as I would have liked. Both sauces were homemade. Steamed rice was a bit too dry. The steamed veggies were meh. Crying tiger is a similar dish but with beef. This wasn't as successful. I ordered medium rare but the meat came out well done. It was grey and tough. Skip this. BBQ chicken was awful. A decent-sized chicken leg quarter was used. Normally, I'd say it is difficult to overcook dark meat. Apparently, this task was achieved with my meal. The meat was dry and stringy. Skip this, too. Vegetarian tom yum soup available as self serve with lunch. So good I helped myself to a second cup. However, don't come too late or all the filling will be gone. On my second visit, diners before me had helped themselves to everything else and left only broth in the pot. Thai iced tea also wasn't successful. Light on the tea and high on the sweetness. Was really useful though to cut the burn from the spicy lime sauce. Tried their mango with sticky rice for dessert. Was adequate. Again, rice was a bit dry. I've tried their drunken noodles and pad thai on succeeding visits with my mom. Their noodles are adequate. A little softer than I would like but the sauces weren't bad. I really truly wanted to give them 4 stars because the pork was almost that good. However, the other food was mediocre at best. Also, there was a bit of unpleasantness when I walked in. Cha Thai is a family run restaurant and the family members seem to have forgotten that they were not at home. The cook in the kitchen, who sounded like the dad, was in the middle of yelling at his kids. He was shouting angrily from the back, to his kids in the front, who were trying to help me at the cash register. Everybody in the restaurant could hear him. Very unprofessional. Found this "Hot & New" spot, courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Yelp listings and with Cha Thai freshly open not even a week at that point, (went on Saturday, 9/8), what better opportunity to see what this place was all about. Literally was parked in front of a different venue, but something told me to hop on and see what was new in the area and found the restaurant in fairly close proximity. Guess I was feeling lucky that day & rolled the dice. Glad I did, too as this place was also vegan & gluten free welcoming. The venue: ~~~~~~~~ The location is nestled snugly among several various other establishments in Gateway Centre, San Ramon and by the looks of things from the outside upon approaching the entrance, it was clear that business was already booming. Upon entering, we were greeted to a nicely thought out open format of various seating arrangements, from a few bar stools at the very front bar area, to some higher seated per-pair tables, window seating with outdoor view area, to your standard high back leather bench shared row accompanied by a table with two chairs across from it, sufficient for 4 per table. One large party opted to combine a couple tables in order to comfortably accommodate all which was quickly done by the gentleman who bustled around assisting all. We were told to choose any seat we'd like and the friendly wait staff would be with us shortly. The restaurant was adorned by decor to include several traditional style religious icons and a colorful piece on the far wall of some sort of metallic design work of beautiful koi fish. The offerings / menu: ~~~~~~~~ Ranged from the lunch combo's of typical Thai standard items including a variety of curries and noodle dishes, to the appetizers, several salad choices, soups (9 selections here), noodle dishes, wok items, chef special items, curry dishes, "street food", side dishes, desserts & drinks. Protein choices ranged from chicken, beef, pork, vegetable, shrimp, calamari and tofu in addition to your desired spice level. What we chose: ~~~~~~~~ -Veggie Egg Rolls: Served perfectly golden brown and crisp, not oily with sweet & sour dipping sauce. 4 stars -Fried Tofu: Simple, yet perfectly executed. My friend's first time sampling tofu & he even went back for second's. 4 stars -Crying Tiger: My friend was in absolute heaven over this Chef Special served with Jasmine Rice of grilled marinated beef steak served with a spicy thai dipping sauce which was cooked to a perfect medium rare, as requested. 5 solid stars from him -Pad Thai: I requested this veggie style with tofu and my taste buds were immediately sent into a mouthwatering flavor sensation with each and every freshly-flavored & brightly colored bite with sauce made from scratch each day (we later found out during the course of the meal) and a bountiful amount of mixed vegetables cooked to a crisp and not at all overdone with a generous amount of perfectly golden brown tofu. 5 well deserved stars based upon incredible flavor and gorgeous presentation. ****The Pad Thai was absolutely exquisite in flavor and not greasy in the least with wonderful rice noodles balanced with an array of colorful veggies. Let me add that with such a freshly opened location, it can understandably challenging for the owners to anticipate how many may be coming in. I am completely confident that once the numbers are a bit more solidified as far as daily guests, staffing will also reflect this, although B did more than an exceptional job on his own ensuring every plate was delivered straight to the tables as soon as they were prepared by the chef, piping hot, full of incredible Thai flavor-punch & plated very neatly. Wonderful gentleman who took a great deal of pride across the board. The verdict: ~~~~~~~~ I am craving more Pad Thai and there is absolutely no place else I'd go to ever again for it. However, Cha Thai makes sure to include plenty of fresh veggies and meat. I was really excited for this Thai restaurant to open in a plaza I frequent quite often! It's close enough that we can even do a short walk! We're always going to the iTea next door too. My husband and I went last Thursday for dinner, trying to debate between eating there or doing take out. I opted to try out the place since I figure the food would be fresher and warmer, but I'm not sure if this turned out to be the wise choice. The server was super nice and friendly, but he was also the only one and the staffing seemed a bit understaffed as it was him, an elderly lady, and maybe two other people in the kitchen. When we went a little before 7pm, there were maybe 3 other tables eating, including a larger group, and it took us over half an hour to get our food (just 2 entrees), and we saw two other patrons waiting for quite awhile to get their to go orders too. We ordered Pad See Yew with beef (~$11) and the spicy basil catfish (~$17) . If you have been to Sala Thai in Fremont and love their famous crispy garlic fish, this is NOT the same thing. I had imagined it might be because I asked about if it was battered and fried. What I did not anticipate was the fish to be an entire piece of catfish, lightly battered and lightly fried with the some bones still in it. I did suggest to the waiter after that it may be a better idea to fry separate pieces of fish so it's easier to eat? And it was just not what I was expecting. The flavors of the sauce were okay but the catfish was veryyy fishy. I will not be ordering this one again! As for the pad see yew, it was cooked well, but a little weird to have carrots in it as I'm not used to seeing carrots in my pad see yews. It also may have been nicer if the carrots were a little softer to chew on if you're going to throw it in lol. Portion size was average, but my husband didn't think it was enough. All in all, I think this place has potential and I might try coming again and giving them another chance and order other things on the menu, esp since it's 10% off this month for grand opening. I think they need to work out the timing of dinner service a bit or else I'm gonna call for to go each time and give them like 30-40min to make the food. She was very kind and naturally a genuine, warm presence to be greeted by. Eggplant basil + tofu (spicy) Comes with: carrots, eggplant (duh), bell peppers (we omitted because of allergy) and basil (duh) We got: Eggplant, cabbage, onions, tofu... No basil!!! No carrots either, but that's not a deal breaker. The dish was so heavy in soy sauce and oil. They did bring a side of basil and carrots, but it was already lost on us. Rice was dry and old. Not good. Pad Thai: They added bell peppers... WTH... They had to remake, but the amount of time it took to be sent out made me suspicious of how they handled the food. As I am writing this review I feel like I am having symptoms. Spring rolls, no meat Presentation wasn't great, but the veggies were fresh and tasted good. I enjoyed the fact that they brought two kinds of sauces: sweet Thai chilli and peanut. Super good. I will say we were comped 20% but honestly I'm still hungry since I didn't eat anything. New restaurant, lots of people's first time here; mine included. This is in a shopping plaza with already a couple of places that my family likes to visit so it's a welcome addition. Food wise, the whole family is a fan. My kids said that the Gyoza appetizer made this the best Thai restaurant so far. I had pad thai with tofu and vegan style. I am guessing the vegan added all of the vegetables that I got on mine since the table next to us ordered chicken pad thai and it looked like what I traditionally expect. All I was really trying to accomplish was no egg and no cream in the sauce. But I go a bonus! My wife and I both ordered our meals "thai hot" and they were quite good in that respect. The reason this place doesn't get five stars yet (I hope they improve over their next weeks of business) is the delivery timing of food to a table. I received my dish first and in a very timely manner. I waited for other people at my table to get their food...and waited. I could have been half done with my meal before my wife's meal came. The kids' Gyoza arrived between my and my wife's meals which kept them happy. But they were done and waiting for their fried rice for some time before it came. At least the waiter stopped by to let us know that they hadn't forgotten about the kids' food. Since the kids were splitting the dish, they were able to catch up and we all finished our meals about the same time. I saw this happening at other tables as well. There was an adult and a child next to us. The adult received her meal and waited for the kid's. People at the next table after that who ordered after the adult/child 2-top received a meal or two. I'm honestly not sure if the kid had her meal by the time my family paid and was getting up to leave. Food quality and location will for sure bring me back here. I always feel bad when I have to give a place less then three stars, but there were too many things that caused me to deduct The place had 2-3 other tables in use when we got there. We were directed to sit anywhere. We sat at a the end of a table meant for 6 people. There are high tables and low tables, not sure why, but I guess it gives some levels to the place. I think the place was a bit short staffed, our server looked like he was the cook. He took most orders and a few other parties came in after us. I ordered: Crab fried rice Thai ice tea Crying beef Chicken satay* I think there was some self-serve soup as well The crab fried rice and crying beef came out. I had to remind them about the Thai iced tea. The fried rice was excellent. The crying beef was a let down. There was a lot of beef but there was no char to it and not a lot of seasoning, almost like eating it raw. Last thing was that we never received the chicken satay. Was driving through and was hungry. I'm not from the area and did not know where to go. I decided to stop at a Starbucks to get coffee and a snack, I'm glad I did. Saw this place and initially thought the name was Chai and that it was a tea house. I'm glad I took a second look at the name. I'm not new to Thai food, but I'm still a beginner and never know what to order. The place is nice and clean and practically empty after the lunch crowd. When I went to re-order I found they decided to keep the $28 from the first order stating they had already started my order. Really? WITHIN ONE MINUTE OF ORDERING? Ordered pad see ew (2x), panang curry and sweet rice. The food is as delicious as it can get. This is our new favorite thai restaurant henceforth. How did we miss this hidden gem so long! The sweeter part though is the elderly lady at the restaurant is so nice and courteous and funny that I don't think we will look elsewhere whenever we want to get thai food. The food is not bad but It can be better. -1 star for the pad thai being in the dry consistency side, -1 star for one of their expensive dishes which is the steak, it's so little in portions for the price you pay. Also to include their beef/steak can be on the tougher side, wish it was more softer. -1 star for the super crispy, hard roti dessert texture and very little condense milk on it. We went to Cha Thai at Gateway Centre in San Ramon for lunch on 9/5/2018, the second or third day of the restaurant's grand opening. I ordered the lunch special L3 Mix Vegetable Delight, and asked for it to be vegan. The menu states that "Vegan or Gluten Free (is) welcome" for wok, curry, and noodle dishes. The waiter asked me if I wanted my order to be mild, medium, spicy, or Thai spicy. I opted for Thai spicy. My dish included broccoli, baby corn, onion, tomato, cabbage, bell pepper, celery, zucchini, and green beans. The vegetables I got didn't exactly match the list of vegetables in the menu's description. My dish had good flavor, but wasn't as spicy as I was expecting considering it was supposed to be "Thai spicy." I also ordered brown rice, which I think cost extra, but tasted fine. Before we ordered, a lady (owner?) told us that we could help ourselves to vegetable soup that was in a big pot very close to our table. I asked if the soup was vegan, but was informed that it has chicken broth, so vegetarians/vegans should be aware of that. The waiter was very nice, and I liked the decor of the restaurant. As a grand opening special, ten percent was taken off the bill. I look forward to returning and trying something else. read more

We asked for papaya salad (mild) & we got the spiciest salad ever. We could barely eat it & sent it back to the kitchen. Amazing food and great for takeout during COVID. We ordered Drunken Noodles, Fresh Spring Rolls, Pad Thai, and Chicken Satay. All the dishes were delicious especially the noodles. I normally don't order Pad Thai because of peanuts but they were very accommodating of my allergy. Both noodle dishes were filled with flavor and perfectly spiced. Drunken noodles are my favorite Thai dish and they did a great job of having proportional veggies, meats, and noodles. My friend loved the chicken because of its zesty flavor. Wife and I ate here on Sat. Limited seating inside, but we were able to get a table right away and got served just as fast. Good to see that they have a steady flow of take out orders. We ordered spring rolls and Red and Green curry dishes and were very pleased with the quality of the food, taste and speed of delivery. As with most restaurants 'spicy' usually is not as hot as you think. You need to tell them 10 on a 1-10 scale to get really spicy food, but you have to learn every restaurant's style, so this is not a complaint but a recommendation to those who want spicy food.
