I will begin by saying I like the atmosphere of the Central Standard. I like the lighting, furniture, and how quick the servers move to each table. The establishment was also very clean. Where things declined for me was the food. I had the turkey burger and a side of fries. The burger was thoroughly underwhelming. It was not juicy nor was it flavorful. It was well-cooked though. The bun was simple, but enjoyable though. The fries were very good though. They were hot and crispy. They also weren't too salty, which is good. My sever was courteous and frequented the table a good amount of times. I'm more than willing to come back, but I will not be getting the turkey burger. read more

I had heard rave reviews about this place, and my husband and I (Robert M., who recently reviewed) live near the area, so we decided to give it a try. We went here on a Saturday night around 9, and I was taken aback by how packed the parking lot was, considering the time of day, and the fact that the restaurant is tucked away in a not-so-obvious location. Before we even entered the building, I was mesmerized by the mouthwatering scent of hamburger meat. Yum! As we entered and were immediately led to our table, I was blown away by how much effort was put into the ultra-modern and industrial/hip decor. More restaurants in the Quad Cities need to take note. I ordered the cranberry and ginger martini which, to my pleasant surprise, was very strong (due to the 80-proof vodka) and had a prominent fresh ginger flavor. I've become more of a lightweight these days, so it gave me a nice buzz. As for food, I ordered "The Standard Burger," which was juicy and delicious. It had a nice caramelized onion flavor without the typical aftertaste that paired well with the unique flavors of the gruyere cheese and rosemary mayo. The bun was toasted perfectly and had an addicting, buttery taste. My hungry stomach scarfed that baby up in no time. The fries appeared to be homemade and were tasty as well. Shelby, our waitress, was very friendly, attentive and informative of the menu items. However, she gave off a vibe toward the end as if she were in a rush for us to pay and leave. I was stilling finishing my fries when she handed us the bill. Our table also didn't have any napkins or silverware like all of the others did. Our meals didn't require the use of silverware, so we resorted to wiping our hands with cocktail napkins that came with our drinks. I really wanted to rate this place better than 2 stars but the food is average in my opinion. We chose a variety of different options starting with the cheese curds and garlic pretzel knots. The cheese curds were actually pretty good! Our server said they were transitioning menus and did not have the knots but just had regular pretzels when we went. They really tasted like a pretzel with garlic butter thrown on top...nothing we could not make at home. We had a large party so we tried a variety of different burgers, etc for dinner but I will just comment on the two that I personally tried. I was super excited about the bacon grilled cheese because from the description it sounded fancy and delicious. We were really disappointed. It came out looking like something we made at home. Plain bread, what appeared to be american cheese with bacon slices thrown in. Such a disappointment. I also tried the early riser burger with an egg. I think what really missed the mark here was the bread. The bun tasted very plain like it was missing an ingredient or two. Just no flavor what-so-ever. Also, the burger itself was very bland. The BURGERS! I'm not sure why my husband had the brisket melt (though it looked ah-mazing) when the burgers were both unique and delicious. My Fire and Smoke burger was the perfect balance of hot, sweet juicy umami. The sandwiches come with super crispy house made fries, though other options are available and I consider them my ideal fry. Took my son here for his birthday because we heard good things about their burgers and shakes. Wait staff was very attentive, but it didn't seem like they got a lot of kids in there. Fries were nicely crisped and the burgers were juicy, well-proportioned, and deftly seasoned. My boy ordered a s'mores shake, and it lived up to the hype both in visual appeal and flavor. I came to Central Standard with a group of around 10 people last Friday. It was quite busy (and loud!) and I was very impressed at how well the employees did at having a place ready for us at the previously arranged time. Our waitress did a great job serving our table and was incredibly patient when not everyone arrived on time and when we lingered for quite awhile after dining. I ordered a Pub Burger, which came with crunchy onion strings and pimento beer cheese. The onions were really good and the beer cheese was a little superfluous, and though my burger was cooked to specification I felt that it really wasn't a $13 burger. Good but not great. I did really enjoy the perfectly fried cheese curds one of my friends ordered as an appetizer and if I come again will definitely get some for the table. While the service at Central Standard was excellent, I felt that prices were too high for the mediocre standard of food. Absolute B.S. Central Standard. I ask for a reservation for 6. I'm told 20 minutes. My wife tells me we are being joined by 3 more ( 2 of which are kids). I tell the reservation people immediately I need to change it to 9. They tell me it will be more of a 35 minute wait. I tell them I'll head next door to 5 Five Cities Brewing. Same owners BTW. 45 minutes later I head over to check on reservation understanding it's a Saturday night. They tell me they can't accommodate 9 without a reservation as im looking at a larger table that had just been sat which they claim had a reservation even though they are an out of town baseball team so I call BS. So they tell me the only way they can accommodate me is to split our group up. I ask why they didn't mention that 45 minutes ago because I would have just ordered from 5 cities or gone elsewhere. No explanation given even though it was the manager that said he would make it work 45 minutes prior and the same manager that told me they couldn't accommodate us without splitting us up. So we head back to 5 cities against my will at this point knowing it's the same owners and I'm frustrated. The curds has just the best light breading on them making them beyond perfect; the burger juicy and succulent the mushrooms were perfect not over cooked or mushy. The atmosphere topped it off. I would happily give this place 3.5 stars. Cons: We had a fairly long wait without the space to stand, so we were always in the way. The music was extremely loud, which made it very difficult to have a conversation and spent out time yelling to each other. The pastrami sandwich was so-so, and the onion rings were too big and thick (part of the breading was doughy). It was also pretty pricey for a burger, ridiculous prices for the sides. It would have been nice to have a bigger selection of burgers, since those are their claim to fame. After hearing mixed reviews, I finally ventured out and gave it a shot. Let me start by saying, it's a very cute/trendy restaurant! I like how they pulled off the industrial/hip vibe without looking too overdone. When we got there, on a Saturday lunch shift, they were jamming. We grabbed 2 seats at the bar and were greeted immediately. The service was great- she informed us of their happy hour specials and gave us samples of all the beers we asked about. We got the spinach artichoke dip as an app and it was pretty decent. Nothing really stood out about it but I wouldn't be opposed to getting it again. I got the "Down On The Ranch" burger and it was.. okay. I don't like that you can't get your burger cooked the way you want. You get your choice of medium well or well done. Uhh... okay. It seemed like the burgers were more about what they're topped with than the actual burger itself. So you're paying $11-12 for a mediocre burger with crazy toppings/garnishes.
