We never can figure out where to eat when we go to Blackhawk (we don't go very often). We've tried a few other restaurants at other casinos and a couple of buffets. Nawsogood. Well we took a party of fifteen up here for a B-day party and actually liked the majority of stuff Ameristar's buffet had to offer. Let me first say this, "This ain't Vegas.". Don't expect gourmet quality food but this is much better food then your Country Buff/Golden Corr/Furr's cafeteria type food (well except for what all these places call mexican fare. sheesh.). Have been here twice in less than three months and I must say I love this buffet. For dinner in Black Hawk, this is my favorite buffet. The variety of food is wonderful (they have decent kim chee) and I haven't had anything there that wasn't delicious. Both times we went there were during a week night, so this may account for my next statement: the workers were SO FRIENDLY & COURTEOUS!!! We arrived late on a Friday night from out of town. Looking to have a nice meal. It was horrible. Service was okay, but she was busy. The selection was okay, but not for the price. I was really impressed the last time I went here for an early birthday celebration for my husband. Had to celebrate 3 weeks early because I went on the Nutrimost diet.... It's all fun and games till your jeans don't fit anymore. Anyway, the staff is very professional and on top of things. For a buffet, the waiters are very attentive. Refilling drinks, clearing plates and emptying the crab bucket frequently. On top of that, they come around and talk to you, making sure the service is up to par and everything tastes alright. Ok, so my favorite dish ever is crab legs. I always get them steamed when I eat up in black hawk, but it was chinese new and they had a lot of Asian dishes including some stir fried crab legs. They were lightly coated in a crunchy layer of flour and tossed with a jalapeño/garlic sauce. A little but messy, a whole lot of flavor and finger licking good!!! Probably the best crab legs I have ever had. I usually go to the lodge to eat because my meals are comped but ameristar blew them out of the water. I don't mind paying $27 per person for the quality and quantity. Even the mash potatoes were off the chain. Real potatoes, creamy, mashed with a hint of garlic and butter. Mash potatoes are usually bleh at any buffet but not this one. They had a huge selection ranging from Mexican, Italian, Chinese and american. They even serve pho!! Every dish there was outstanding! The dessert selection is heavenly. Individual servings of apple, coconut, chocolate silk pie, s'mores, chocolate fondue fountain, bananas fosters, strawberry cheesecake, raspberry chocolate chip ice cream. Needless to say- for my last good meal for awhile, I'm sure glad I went here. The couple at the table next to us was laughing because I ended up having to lay down in the booth. I over indulged but it was worth every spoonful. This buffet is the best up in Blackhawk. Their hotel, spa and casino are also top notch. After my diet is over, I'm looking forward to posting more reviews and photos!! I'll post about this diet plan eventually but it involves resetting my metabolism because I enjoy good food too much to give it up completely! read more

We went here 3 times already, the first 2 times were on the Sat night, which was pretty good food to eat...Thats why we'd decided to come back, but this time i pick Thurs night before Valentines Weekend hoping less crowded place...When we were there i was surprised that it was only about 30 people in the dinning room, so i asked the cashier lady was that normal for a Thurs night?, she answered " this is a good crowd for Thurs night buffet." We paid 17$ pp instead of 24$ pp for the weekend, we'd found out that Thurs night there is no Crab legs...we were very disappointing, we proceeded to eat and i must say we both were very disappointed about the food choices and quality there that night!...the food seem old and not as fresh, we had the Vietnamese Pho there it was good, we like that...the rest were very greasy and fattening food...We will Not come back for Thurs night again... We were both agreed that with the price, Golden Coral Buffet is much better place to eat and the price only 14$ pp. We drove home very unhappy meal...it was an 1.5 hr drive for us up the hill... real bummer read more

The nice thing about this buffet is that it's virtually free if you have a players card and earn 25 pts of play. The bad thing is, since they've introduced this, the quality has gone WAY downhill. Everything was VERY dry and tough. The only things I halfway enjoyed we're the ribs and the carved tri-tip. Pork chops were drier than Jerky. I guess you get what you pay for. read more

Disappointed. This place was great a few years back, now it's pretty bad. Service is shit. Thank god the food was still good. The wait staff was lacking organization skills and motivation. It was my Mother's Day man! My dinner experience was whack here ‼.... we payed 100$ and got dennys service. FAIL! read more

I stopped in for a couple of hours on the slots after a trip up Evans Mountain. The buffet is better than I expected. A very nice salad bar with lots of "somewhat" healthy choices. The freshest and tastiest food is in the Asian section. All the vegetables are fresh and the meats are tender. I didn't paarticularly like the tofu stir fry, but that could just be me. Most of the other dishes are rather dried up looking and appear to be previously frozen. The desserts are worth saving room for, and the service is friendly. read more

Big selection of inedible food, the best way to summarize our experience. I don't know who they have working as cooks, but they are obviously clueless, I recommend a training class where they are introduced to the basics, like salt and pepper. Chicken marsala is deep fried and served in a green pesto sauce? Gnocchi is a shell pasta? Tamales are actually an enchilada with unmelted cheese inside of it? Most deep fried items have a bad aftertaste, as if they were cooked in oil that hasn't been replaced in a long time. I learned a valuable lesson during my two day stay at Ameristar, their restaurants are just flat out terrible. read more

I am a pretty picky gluten free eater who only eats chicken as far as meat is concerned. I must say I was a little hesitant to eat here at first as there weren't too many options for lunch for me besides salad bar and a few other items. My mind was changed when the executive chef came out, showed me what was gluten free exactly in the buffet and then prepared a completely fresh, made from scratch plate of chicken breast in a lemon and white wine reduction sauce with mixed vegetables. Not really a foodie place, but if you are in black hawk for some gambling fun, this is a great place. Seems between 7-8 it is VERY busy, long line, we got there earlier so it was easy. As mentioned, we went for the king crab legs, as far as buffets go these are really good. I tend to like variety so there are all sorts of other stations ( American, Asian, Mexican, Italian, Salad Bar) which makes it fun to try different things. If the food wasn't so good, I would have knocked it down to 3 stars as the service was basically non-existent. Couldn't even get a water glass refilled. Good thing my anger was masked in a food coma, but perhaps order more drinks initially to make sure you stay hydrated. read more

We came here for both dinner and brunch during our stay. The food was pretty good for a buffet. We enjoyed the prime rib for dinner. There were a lot of options. For the brunch is was nice to have bottomless mimosas included in the meal. The stay was very friendly. Also, with my husband being active duty army they gave him a 25% discount which is a very generous discount in my opinion, as most places only due 10% if any. read more

It's a casino buffet, so you have to figure that some stuff will be better than other stuff. And that's exactly the case here. Went on a Sunday night and apparently there were no crab legs that night, so that was a bummer. They had a good variety of cuisines, though I wouldn't quite go as far as calling them "ethnic", since they're mass-produced to serve the crowds. But probably most people would be able to find a few things they liked well enough. I won't go through all the items, you can decide for yourself what type of food you prefer. Some looked more appetizing than others, and generally the taste reflected the look. Other reviews mentioned strawberries at the dessert station with the fondue, but we didn't see any even though they would have been in season. The minimal available fruit on the salad bar was pretty fresh, so I'm not sure what the story was there. The service was pretty good, and they get points for accommodating a larger group, even with a sizable dining area. Most buffet items were restocked fairly quickly, and they had a good number of staff to cover a weekend night. All told, not bad, not outstanding, probably gets the job done for most of the captive audience at the casino. read more

We went for the Thanksgiving Buffet this year and I came down with food poising. It was the only meal I ate that day. Ended up sick and in bed for three days. I have never experienced anything that horrific before in my life. Not even when I got sick in Mexico. Would NEVER risk eating there again!!! read more

This is a pretty good buffet! The casino/hotel is new, so it's pretty clean, and they have great service! The food was pretty much the same as regular buffets, but they had a good carved meat station. Everything is very fresh and freshly made, and there are specialities such as make your pasta and pho. Came here for Thanksgiving because it's cheaper than the city. Highlight of the day was the creamy pumpkin soup. Asian station serves the nutritious Bok Choy and sweet and spicy cucumber cold dish. Price was elevated for the holiday, 25 dollars a pop. Drink is pretty cheap and service is attentive. Overall pretty good experience .... just go there early to avoid the line! read more

Great Buffet, and even better when its technically free. I gambled some points and used a voucher. Kudos on the hostess asking if you have ever been before, and when you say NO. They explain the whole layout of the stations to you. Its nicely planned and the food is fresh. They even have PHO which i love but didnt try this time around. Even the attendants at the stations and the servers are so polite and friendly. Nice Dessert bar with the chocolate fountain and yes they do have Sugar Free desserts. read more

It's a decent deal, and it works when you have people who want very different things, but it's not really any better than most other typical American buffets. You can be selective to make the most of it -- go for the omelettes made to order, carved meats, fresh salad, etc. It's easy to bogged down in the fried foods, but that's pretty much every buffet, isn't it? I enjoyed the crab legs here. I made several trips since they put fresh ones out constantly. I have been to several buffets with AYCE crab and lobster. This one is the best. The meat was actually sweet and warm since they were good about keeping it coming. I can't wait to come back when I'm in CO. read more

Whenever I'm craving asian food I typically go to this buffet as they have made to order Pho along with "Chinese" dishes. The buffet has a good assortment of desserts and salads but the Mexican fare leaves much to be desired. read more

This is a good Vegas style buffet. They have a wide selection to choose from. There is a different station for each kind of food like seafood, mexican or chinese. They serve steamed crab legs for dinner. The desserts selection was awesome. Expect a long waiting line on weekends. Food quality is not that good, especially for the price. Some food items just too salty... My child even had bones in his boneless chicken. Staff seemed lethargic and uninterested. They seem to feel they have a monopoly as it's difficult to move around in the immediate area and restaurant competition is limited. read more

The all you can eat crab was being refilled constantly. The Prime Rib was outstanding and not skimpy. Very generous cuts! The staff was courteous and attentive. This buffet has a wide array of ethnic food. The price is pretty steep per person. It is probably the most expensive of all the casinos. The crab legs here are pretty small which takes a lot more cracking to get my fill. The service here is good depending on the waiter/waitress you get. read more
