Nanaimo bar and cheesy pasta (couldn't decide if I was ready for dessert... haha!)
    Mary T.

My review is on my dining experience at Centennial Buffet, which is located at Ameristar Casino Resort Spa in Black Hawk. It is roughly a fifty-minute drive from Denver. My friend and her husband frequent casinos often. They get various deals on hotel rooms and buffets. While I was visiting them in Denver, we went to Black Hawk to have dinner one evening. As you'd expect from a buffet, there are plenty of food options, so you don't get bored. My problem has always been getting my money's worth at a buffet. I have two plates of food and dessert, and I am in a food coma. My first plate was good. I eyed the mac and cheese right off the bat. I also got salmon, ribs, green beans, and a burrito. Everything was decent and yummy. I ordered some beef pho at one of the food stands where it is made in front of you. It took a good ten minutes to make. It wasn't good. The broth wasn't what you'd expect in pho. Salt was the only flavour that I got out out of it. The beef was tough. I recommend passing on it. I got a Nanaimo bar, and a cookies and cream item for dessert. The former was sweet, as expected. It was okay. I loved the cookies and cream dessert. I would get that. It's yummy! On the whole, it was great dining with friends. This buffet does not scream a must-go place if you are in Denver and want to drive a bit further for a buffet. However, if you are spending some time at the casino, you might as well drop by. Just avoid the beef pho. (207)

EARLY Dinner @ Centennial Buffet March 23rd 2012

I think until now I am still "drooling" or still thinking about Centennial Buffet since I like the KING CRAB LEGS to eat to my HEARTS content err in this case or opportunity to my stomach content! YES for the FRIDAY evening of March 23rd 2012, we, the ladies and I opt for to eat here AGAIN, just for the KING CRAB LEGS, to name a few for ($21.99) each person. For that amount indeed its worth just to eat those KING CRAB LEGS. We decide to have an early DINNER. Time was @ 16:30hrs ish. I am missing this place just by writing this review, and still think about their KING CRABS LEGS, the food spread and the desserts to name a few... I know for some its nothing, but geez I cant help it but drooling about it.. On a sweet note, I end my evening @ Centennial Buffet with their endless array of desserts. Hehehe :P @58/2012

    Crab legs

Buffet over all is ok but the crab legs are the best I tried everywhere and nowhere is as good as it's in here, always juicy and test perfect, if you want crab legs this is the only place to go

After waiting for an hour.....rumors were there used to be shrimp served here

Had some great experiences over the past 5 years dining here - Staff is great, kind of place that has your drink filled before you ask, and your plates cleared right away as you indulge in gluttony. Sadly the quality has been progressively worse over time, I keep coming back believing things will change, and keep being disappointed. I will not be returning. Prices have been rising steadily and now the weekend buffet is $34......used to be $26 just a few years ago. I would gladly pay that kind of money if the food was good, but it's not. Dinning today for Sunday brunch left much room for improvement. Several dishes were not even warm, and the egg quische was actually cold.....I prefer my eggs at least heated. There used to be an abundance of seafood, now the past times I've been for brunch there was farm raised salmon, and shrimp and grits (actually grits and shrimp) as there were a few popcorn sized shrimp in a bowl of grits. There seemed to be lox and peel and eat shrimp, however after dining for an hour, they were never refilled, and I'm only guessing as the sign used to label all the food was never put up. A fitting metaphor for the restaurant, everything that is needed to be great is there- great servers, clean restaurant, and beautiful location, but the details like serving hot food or putting a label on the food you serve, does not happen.

    Those mashed potatoes...oh yes!!!

Dessert first: If I was rating just the dessert bar I'd give it four. The desserts were yummy. I was impressed the creme brulee had the hard sugar crack on top (went to a fancy pants buffet in Vegas and it's creme brulee just had soggy syrup!). Always love a good build your own ice cream sundae bar. A fantastic way to end the meal. And the rest: We went midweek around 2PM and it was not busy at all, easy to get a seat. The waitress was friendly and quickly filled drinks. There was quite a selection of items to choose from. About 75% were pretty decent and about a quarter I didnt care for. My favorites included mashed potatoes, sesame chicken, and surprisingly, the prime rib was pretty good. I didn't care much for the mac and cheese bar, great idea, but the sauces were just okay. Also the "soft" pretzels were hard. :/ Overall, for the price-$13.99 we would probably visit again---Ill just steer clear of the weird cheese sauce next time and I'll save lots more room for dessert!!!

Best Crab legs, Deep fried with a jalapeno glaze!!! This used to be our spot until they stopped offering all you can eat on the crab legs:(
    Vincent R.

Let me say the food here is awesome! Great selection and almost everything tastes awesome. My favorites are the deep fried jalapeno crab leggies, Won-Tons, pizza and all of the wonderful desserts! This really would have been a 4 or 5 star review if they didn't take away the all you can eat crab legs!!! Now they charge $8 per pound! That is so lame, come on Ameristar, we know that you are making a ton of money off the games, can you at least be fair about the food?? Ever since the change we have started eating at the Monarch buffet which offers all you can eat crab legs and gives you a lobster for 18.99 per person! Be on the lookout for my review on the Monarch. If Ameristar happens to bring back the all you can eat crab legs I will be happy to revise my review and continue frequenting their establishment. #missingmycrableggies

For a buffet, it ranks at the top. Right in the casino. Variety of foods, including American, Vietnamese, Mexican (tamales were very good, and had some bite to them), etc. the dessert options are numerous. Full cheese cake slices, fruit toppings, creme brûlée, carrot cake, ice cream, chocolate fundue, cookies, pies, banana bread, etc. A little pricey but overall, a good meal.

I do believe we were celebrating our anniversary . We had alot going on as we were in the middle of closing on our house and unfortunately missed our closing date so we treated ourselves to a weekend up on "The Hill". We've done all the buffets and were looking for something different. We've walked by this place numerous times, I looked up the reviews and for the most part seemed worth giving it a shot. But in my opinion what we paid for the meal and the tenderness of my steak we would have faired better at a Texas Roadhouse or Longhorn. Steak was slightly overcooked and sides were nothing to brag about. You'd be better off dropping the $80 for the buffet across the street at " The Monarch " And actually now that I think about out it I made the reservation online and did mention it was our anniversary but they didn't have our reservation not that we needed one but it was recommended on a Saturday night. But thats my opinion, so take your chances maybe you'll have a better experience. I do believe dinner for two ran , $280 . For me , pass, side bar... The baked potato was the best part of the meal!

After greeting us she said "your cabernets will be right up". Now, not every bartender remembers your drink after meeting with a customer only twice before. My mouth dropped. She made us feel like family in each and every way. We had some wonderful conversations as she was bustling around assisting other customers. Many kudos should be given to her as far as her extremely excellent customer service. Arnie, in our book, is "second to none"! Can't wait to go back.

Well-presented and delicious! We then ordered the Nantucket Risotto (only been on the menu for 2 weeks), the Blue Island Diver's Platter (ask for the octopus), a Happy Hour Crispy Slider and Fish Taco. We combined this with a glass of white wine and red wine. The meal was absolutely fabulous and we then finished this spectacular meal with sharing a key lime pie. I will say for the oyster deal it has been good, but sometimes the oysters aren't cleaned well. Again a hit and miss. The ambiance is nice and soothing, very ocean blue. We have also tried some sides and other entrees. The shrimp entree was good but lacked some salt. The burger was amazing with the bacon jam and always have the best shoestring fries. I also got an order of the crispy rice that has a salmon and a tuna. The salmon was way too sweet and had a fishy aftertaste that I disliked. The truffle tuna was definitely the better one of the two. However, the rice itself was absolutely mushy and not necessarily crispy. It also didn't have the best flavor. Desserts tried were the olive oil orange cake and the brownie. both are OK and nice and sweet, but not something I would spend money on Overall, truly think this place is a hit and miss. Just depends on the night.

Since I'd parked at Lions Head, before I returned to Denver, I considered the Vail Chophouse, as their menu looked delicious, however when I went inside, the live music was so loud - even with my noise-canceling headphones still in- that I still couldn't hear, and knew I'd blow out my ear drums. Enter: Montauk Seafood Grill, the perfect antidote, with an equally appealing menu, and a much more serene ambiance. :-) Given I was famished, I asked my wonderful server, Brenn, for recommendations, and she was - hands down - one of the best servers I've had, in a long time. She was friendly, attentive, honest, and an all around delight. I started by asking her suggestion, as to if I should order the "Blood Moon" or "Happy Coconut" mocktail, and she recommended the Blood Moon, which was delicious! I love Blood Orange, and it had the perfect combination of mint, to be both sweet & sour. I needed a mocktail, given I was driving back to Denver, after dinner. She then brought me delicious Rosemary Sourdough and Citrus Butter, as a starter, which was fantastic, especially given I needed all the carbs, from skipping lunch, riding so much, and from fasting the night before, for a prior medical appointment, that morning, in Denver, hence my late start, snowboarding. Then I ordered - and loved - the Point Reyes Blue Cheese Crusted Filet Mignon, medium rare, with the most delicious asparagus I've ever had, and I was grateful that they could make my truffle potatoes, whipped, instead of hash brown style. I ended my delicious dinner with a cappuccino, for the drive home. Perfection!

The sandwiches are very large (could be easily shared) and the coffee was good. However, the price was quite steep ($38.08). We do understand that BH is a tourist town with no other industry, but nearly $40 still seems a lot for two sandwiches and one coffee. We also didn't find the service super friendly or particularly efficient. At delivery of our food the server said: "I guess I forgot to mention sandwiches come with a bag of chips. Get what you want from the back wall". It took a moment to figure out where the chips were (the back wall is technically the bar) but I finally realized they are on the right side of the shop. We also found it amusing that the options on the Square terminal (for what is basically a self service coffee shop) had suggested tips options as: 25% - 30% - 35% Again, a bit steep for the service provided, but no complaints for the quality and flavor of the options we tried and if we are back in the area we may decide to split a sandwich.
