Decided to stop in and try this place since we always pass it on our way out of the parking garage. At first, you're a little skeptical because it literally feels like you are walking into a cellar but once you look around you notice that its actually a cool little niche bar. The place features live music with their calendar of bands on the wall. Not knowing many of bands listed, I couldn't really tell you what type of live music they feature, but i will say the music playing in the bar while we were there was great (music in style of things you would hear on DC101 if that helps). The bar only has three taps, at the time it was flying dog, blue moon and tank 7. They do have bottle beer, but even then its not really an extensive list. Nothing local for Maryland wines, just the regular generic wine list. I think that their main specialty is mixed drinks. they do have a lot of things going on during the week - open mic, pub trivia, and of course live music. With each event, there are drink and food specials (fish tacos, margaritas, beer specials..etc etc). We didn't try any of the food, as we were just stopping in for a drink. If you are looking for a local bar with a casual laid back atmosphere, this might be your place. Bartenders were friendly and the place definitely has a good atmosphere. read more

I would give it a second chance, as we were only there for happy hour, but it wasn't the best. One drink (well vodka drink) was not tasty because it was wicked strong, and the other drink (margarita) was not good because it tasted like just sour mix with no alcohol. The bar food menu did look like it had some cheap options, so I would give it a second chance to try some of the food, but I wouldn't go back just for happy hour drinks. read more

The service and food here was impeccable. If you are a seafood lover, the crab dip is 100% the way to go. Perfect consistency and topped with a cheesy heaven. Definitely will come back again sometime and recommend it to friends and family. Also, the staff was on their game. The restaurant may be good but do not go to their after dinner bar if you don't want to be assaulted and have the staff do nothing about it. It was a packed Saturday night with a DJ. My friend and I were walking out onto the dance floor to dance and I guess my friend accidentally brushed against another girl without saying "excuse me." I'm sorry, but when a dance floor is packed you accidentally brush against a bunch of people. That girl and her friend started yelling at my friend. I couldn't hear any of what was being said due to the music. I said nothing to them, just watched the exchange. They then kicked our asses to the point I had to be sent to the hospital. The security did NOTHING. Didn't even try to help when my friend was able to escape and ran to a bouncer. That bouncer told her to "go get her 'friend'" who also works at the bar, instead of doing his job to protect patrons. She then had to run to the owner (or manager, not sure) to actually get help. The whole time I was getting beat up. They then escorted me to the back and asked 4 or 5 times if I wanted to press charges. I said yes every time, but it took them multiple answers for them to actually call the cops. Meanwhile they had the girls that beat us up stopped, and talked to them, but did not get their names before letting them leave and the cops get there. I will have no justice because of how Cellar Door handled the situation. And no one will be paying my hospital bills for the black eye and two staples I had to have put in my scalp due to an incident in their establishment. It's obviously not their direct fault, but they failed when it came to dealing with a violent situation. I also think the bar attracts this violent type of crowd. Just know this can happen to you at Cellar Door if it happened to me. read more

I used to love the Cellar Door. I've been a regular for nearly a year, but they need to fire the ugly bouncer. I was a little drunk when I showed up, but I tried to apologize and say I would switch to water and he literally screamed at me so loud with his lungs full of tobacco that I couldn't breathe and shoved me out while I was screaming in terror? You know why I was screaming in terror? Because I've been assaulted many times. I'm too old for this shit. If you had asked me politely to leave, I would have done that, happily. I live ABOVE THE STARBUCKS 5 feet away, you stupid bashers. I cannot believe this. Forget your open mic night, assholes. You should NOT fucking give your vocal talent WHIPLASH. We had a Groupon. I had been there before with my wife and this time brought my daughter. I had been to the Brewers Ally previously (work related) and loved it but just wanted to share the experience with my daughter (the next generation right) but we made the mistake of showing up on the wrong day of the week and the idiot waiter seemed to take pleasure in finally at the end of out dining telling us that our Groupon was not good for the day even though he had known from the time we first enter the restaurant and seemed to take pleasure in charging us full price. Weirdo! And Weirdo crepy management because it was obvious when we paid that the little cr--- at the cash taking end of the operation know exactly what had occurred and thought nothing of it... Trashy. Awful food, staff service is even worse. The 'host/bouncer' and bartenders favorite certain people. Also made inappropriate comments to my friend and I. My son is a college student and enjoys the nightlife here in Frederick- he has told me the bouncer is very rude to certain people. The "regulars" get to act as staff members. They played latin music and another customer suggested no one dance if they're white (we are not white by the way, but come on)... the staff perpetuates and encourages that culture. There is some really gross behavior here that the workers won't address. They need an entire new staff, the atmosphere is not welcoming whatsoever. Dark, dingey and dirty. My salad was drenched in dressing I couldn't eat it. I am 99% sure I food poisoning from the appetizers. Need someone who can completely renovate and change the place entirely. It is the gutter bar of downtown, and attracts such people. With all the amazing bars and restaurants downtown, it would be silly to choose here to go to. read more

The cellar door Sunday brunch is incredible. Like any other millennial, I've been to an embarrassing number of restaurants for brunch and CD is hands-down my favorite. I drive 25-30 minutes on Sundays just to have the fried chicken and waffles. Be sure to ask for extra of the sauce, it's incredible. Drinks are delicious and well-prepared, and the comedy night is a BLAST. Hands-down one of my favorite bars. Keep up the good work! read more

I'm glad this place is open after being closed .they should be open during the week also.I had their Cajun salmon BLT SANDWICH and it was fantastic.Their menu has changed and the chef too.so if you are looking to have a great lunch or dinner only on the weekends for now you should definitely try this restaurant out .Thanks for the great food read more

Service and drinks are well done, the crowd attracted to their bar after hours can be get a bit rough. While spending an evening at the Cellar door, you run the risk of seeing everyone you went to highschool with or being groped by total stranger. Sky's the limit. read more

This is a great little bar and restaurant. I always enjoy my meals here. It's not a quiet place since it is about 50/50 bar/restaurant but the food is always good, especially the crab dip! It's on Market right in the middle of down town. A great place to stop for lunch or dinner. read more

Jadon and I stopped here while we were visiting Frederick. The atmosphere was laid back, the service was great (thank you Eric!), and the food was good. The restaurant is at a good location, not too far from the baseball stadium. We will definitely come back the next time we pass through Frederick. read more

I'm surprised there aren't more reviews of this place! After noticing it for awhile, we finally decided to go on Thursday after I heard they had a great happy hour. As we walked down the stairs I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it was kind of charming! The bar area with the pub tables and cushions was cute. I didn't love the dining area, but maybe it's better when you're sitting there. The half price beer and wine was great, and they had a really nice selection. They also had half price apps (till 7)...the waitress warned us they were a bit small so we ordered a few...ahi tuna was fresh and cooked perfectly...goat cheese fritters with the peach compote were soooo yummy...the wings were really good with their special sauce (buffalo with honey and basil). The only thing that didn't impress me was the crab dip. It was just so-so, a lot of cream cheese/sour cream...not a lot of crab or flavor. Fiance liked it because it was a lot of food with the bread and the crackers. We didn't stay for the live music, but it seems like they have something good going on most nights. It really started to get crowded around 8 PM as we were leaving. Now that we know Cellar Door is legit, we agreed we'll definitely be back for dinner! After my first experience and review, I was contacted by Cellar Door proprietor, Richard, who was deeply concerned by my negative experience. He did the right thing and asked me back after menu, staff and purveyor changes were made. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it together to get to the restaurant until last night, and I am glad I gave it a second chance. Immediately when we walked in, my husband and I noticed a positive shift in the ambiance. It felt less college dive bar and more casual family restaurant. I was so happy that there was no awkward audience-centered live entertainment last night. I'm not sure if they have done away with the open mic type entertainment, or if it just wasn't happening last night, but it was nice to eat in peace. It was also immediately apparent that staff attention and professionalism were top notch. We were greeted upon arrival, seated promptly and our waitress, Lacey, was attentive and courteous. She took orders for drinks, then apps, then entrees and checked in regularly to see how our meal was going. We ordered cocktails, which were pretty good. I had a bourbon sour that was definitely sour and not very sweet, but I like that in a drink so I was pleased. My husband got the stone wall which was sweet, but not overly so. Because I had such a bad experience with the mussels the first time, I felt I needed to order them again to do a fair comparison. This time, the mussels were briney and fresh, without the rubber texture and chlorine taste they had last time. The broth was a white wine, fresh tomato and garlic base, rather than the tomato soup I had last time. It was great, and I even asked for more bread so I could enjoy as much broth as possible. My husband had the pork belly tacos as his app and they were awesome. They had a nice crispy outer crunch, and weren't over-seasoned so the natural, rich pork flavor came through. They were accompanied by fresh, crunchy garnishes and just the right amount of sauce. For our entrees, I ordered the flat iron steak, which was cooked to perfection and tender. It came with a side of mashed potatoes, which were just okay, and fresh asparagus that still had a nice fresh crunch. Overall, my entree was lovely and I ate almost my entire plate. My husband ordered a burger, which he thoroughly enjoyed with the hand cut fries. I wish we had had room for dessert because the apps and entrees were clear indication that it would have been delicious! I was really impressed by my second chance visit to the Cellar Door, and was pleased to meet Richard in person. It's a place I'd be willing to go back to again. read more

We went there on a recommendation from someone at Cannon Hill Antiques, I was not at all happy with my food. First the bartender says they have nothing vegetarian on the menu, strike one. We eventually found 2 things, the millet salad and the hummus. The millet was not cooked properly, it was underdone and downright crunchy, the cucumbers were on their last legs I could not eat the salad, I was hungry so I tried, strike 2. The hummus was supposed to be roasted red pepper hummus but it was very soupy and lacked any real flavor, strike 3. read more

Stumbled on The Cellar Door for lunch with a friend, and I'm so glad we found it! We ordered from the brunch menu--we both got the veggie omelet and it did not disappoint. I had the side of cheesy grits and they were super yummy :) I adored the ambiance--lots of stone and wood and pillows. It was super cozy and I definitely want to come back sometime to check out their bar scene. The waitress Isabel was very attentive and kept our water glasses full. We were looking for a little home-in-the wall for lunch and couldn't have stumbled on a better one! read more

I write this review with out having any of their food (besides just one aptz). Went there for some drinks on a slow Monday. Walked in and was greeted by no one. After standing there for about a minute a cook came out of the kitchen and ask 'can I help you?' as if he had no idea why we were there. He got the bartender who greeted us with 'just to let you know the kitchen closes in ten minutes'. There was only one other couple in the restaurant and she sat us down at the booth next to them. She gave us menus but no drink menu. Had to ask for that when she asked us what we wanted to drink. We shared the fried moz and had two glasses of wine. We only had two because the waitress just came by and placed the check on the table after she delivered the second round. I hope the service we got wasn't normal and may return for dinner one night and hopefully I can rate this higher. read more

The food is greasy and horrible, the place is dark and dingy, and the service is pathetic. Even trying to pay my bill was next to impossible. Its not like this place had a crowd ever...not sure what the problem was. Oh yeah, they were too busy standing in the customers ear shot arguing about their jobs, other employees, and even with each other. Good food, horrible service. It was an hour to get the order and drink glasses never cleared and long gaps of time when the wait staff would check on is. Their excuse was there was a bar party and large catering order but no apology. I noticed that when we walked in the floor was sticky like a college bar which is disgusting for any establishment. This place has an identity crisis, is it a bar, a pub or a restaurant? This was my first time here, won't be back. Now I know why I've never cared to come here. read more

I've always been a fan of the Cellar Door to enjoy some drinks and music (warning: it can get loud) with friends. However, I've never actually had a meal here until recently when I went out with the gals for restaurant week. The bartenders have always been kind and I found our server to be super nice as well. He was super familiar with the menu and great at suggesting different wines to pair with the meal. Service speed was so-so. Since it was restaurant week, I was able to sample a bit of everything with the three course meal. Each items was tastefully displayed, creative, and most importantly yummy! 3 1/2 stars. read more

The food is very good, HOWEVER, the management was absolutely horrible and it is not worth dealing with. They lost our reservation and were completely unapologetic about it. She denied ever getting our call and then looked through the caller id on their phone. Our number was on their caller id and she said that she suddenly remembered that call because there was nobody on the other end of the call and she hung up. This was a complete lie because we called and made the reservation with her earlier that day. The place is also very small and cramped. read more

We go to Cellar Door specifically for the DJ on Saturday nights and love that there's a great place to dance in downtown Frederick. After many fun nights with amazing music, we were all very disappointed last night with the current DJ. Despite many requests, he seemed to lack experience with playing the old and new hip hop music that has made our nights out so fun. We haven't been there since May so I'm not sure how long he's been playing but it has us now looking for another venue for our nights out. read more

My friends and I love this place! Atmosphere is great any day of the week. We all have non 9 to 5's so we'll be here on $5 burger nights (weds) and karaoke night (thurs) quite often. Food is awesome we've tried almost everything. Charlie, Pat, and Lacey always take care of us and makes us feel like family. Always welcoming and smiling even if it's a busy weekend night. Your Asian bouncer is nuts. Just kicked me out when i was sober when some girl was trying to fight me. I tried to calmly explain and he grabbed my drink out of my hand and threw me out even though strangers were stepping in to explain the girls were hammered. That's okay. Downtown regular will explain to everyone what went down. Your bouncer needs a talking to. I've been coming downtown about 3x a week for the last ten years and have never had an experience like this. First time ever being thrown out of anywhere and I've never even been in an altercation before. Unbelievable. read more
