I went here for a lunch date. We sat inside and it was quiet and relaxed. The view was so nice and it's in such a nice location. The wait staff were so nice and the service was prompt and polite. We ordered the pistachio feta spread (think hummus), the lamb wrap, and the beef brisket burger. The pistachio hummus was absolutely amazing. I'm a huge fan, it was a little on the salty side, but hey, I love salt, bring it on. The lamb wrap was also really good, although I tend to not be a huge fan of lamb. The burger I was a little disappointed in. It was kind of a greasy mess and the brioche bun it came on just got so soggy. It did come with some cute pickled (radish?) thing that was super yummy! I came here for dinner as a Turk, expecting to be disappointed as I am with most Mediterranean-themed restaurants. I ordered the octopus dish with ayran, expecting to be served the Turkish yogurt drink alongside some grilled octopus. When it came out, there was no sight of ayran. I asked the waiter where it was. He said, "It's right there. It's in the sauce." And there it was. That was a first. Skeptical, I tried the food. The main dishes were surprisingly not very Mediterranean--there are just 3, and one of them is called "Pennsylvania chicken". I don't remember PA being anywhere near Mare Nostrum. Despite this, the chicken was delicious. In fact, it was one of the most delicious dishes I have ever had. My partner had the vegetarian carrot dish, which was surprisingly filling and almost as good. Celestine definitely has an innovative chef at work. One thing about Mediterranean food is that it has not been very creative since the 19th century, when many classics were invented. That also makes it hard to get very wrong. A hidden treasure near the Manhattan Bridge! Views are amazing on a clear day, even when indoors. My friend and I ordered the Baba Ghannouj, Kale Salad, Shakshuka, and the French Toast Casserole. Baba Ghannouj was AMAZING. We split the flatbread, seasoned with lots of spice and herbs. The hummus had a tinge of spice in it as well and is flavorful enough to keep you occupied until the main dishes arrive. I first tried the French Toast. It has a nice maple syrup consistency that holds it together. The bread is made softly and has a vanilla taste. It has the perfect amount of sweet and sour, I highly recommend! I really liked the shakshuka as well. It tastes like a healthier alternative to Italian pizza. There is a lot of tomato, however, so avoid if you don't like it. I didn't try the kale, but it looked pretty good from my angle. Overall, the place's atmosphere with soft music, green plants, wood walls, big windows, proximity to the bridge, and food options are a solid 5/5. I thought after the first time coming here, the rudeness was a fluke. I just went a second time for the view and we were appalled at the staff's attitude. The first time I had come here I had to wait 45 minutes for a table even though I had a reservation and I arrived 10 minutes early. The cocktails were fine but I was not impressed by the food as it was very expensive and extremely small plates. I came a second time because it was in a beautiful location and I had guests in town. When we had arrived we were the only ones at the restaurant and we were not happy with the table we were given and we were told this was the only option for us because we were a large party (5). Within 10 minutes larger parties came through the door. There were screaming children and the staff had done nothing about it. I usually would not expect staff to do anything, but it was 30 minutes of screaming and other customers were visibly annoyed. There would be no accommodations considering how loud it was. The food continues to be extremely is disappointing while also confusing. Ordering hummus does not include anything to dip in of the hummus. We were then told that it was time to leave the restaurant by the staff. We haven't even received the check from anyone at this point. I'm not sure how you can tell us its time to leave when we've waited for the check for 20 minutes. When we left, the host decided to be rude one last time to us with a sly comment. All in all, I've never had such a disgusting experience at a restaurant more than once. If you're in the area, I recommend eating at Cecconi's. They are so accommodating and the portions are great! read more

We waited a little longer for our food but they gave us complimentary prosecco with sincere apologies. Now the food...phenomenal and flavorful! It's been awhile since I've had such an experience as this. A very serene spot for dinner. Took my other half here for the first time and it was simply amazing. From the time you first enter the restaurant, you can feel an atmosphere that is both warm and inviting. We were instantly greeted by very friendly staff who reviewed our reservation and had us seated rather quickly at a table with a wonderful view of the Manhattan Bridge and the East River. Our table was pleasantly decorated with a wee candle and vase with flowers and of course plates and utensils for appetisers. Immediately our waiter arrived and inquired as to our preference for water (distilled or sparkling) and quickly filled our glasses with our selection. We started off with a simple appetiser and patiently awaited our main course which allowed us to chit chat and bask in the ambience of this quaint establishment. Lovely food and ambiance. I'm leaving three stars because the drinks were watered down and not very good and our waiter was rude when I asked to replace it. I ordered a bloody mary (they didn't have) and then tried to order another drink on their menu with just white rum but that was from a pre made batch and they couldn't accommodate it. I finally ordered the celestine spritz and it tasted like a glass of sprite that had ice melting in it for far too long - no liquor or any other discernible flavor. My coworkers who ordered other cocktails also complained that their drinks were weak. I asked a waiter to bring me something else instead politely, and he asked why and I told him it wasn't a good drink. He kept prodding me about what was wrong with it, and I finally told him it tasted watered down and poor quality. He responded quite rudely "it was a spritz" and took it away and came back with the replacement I asked for. Wow. I didn't expect this. Having been to many restaurants with accolades in New York and around the world, I didn't expect to be vowed by a neighborhood-ish restaurant, specifically, Celestine. Sure, I knew it came with the sweeping view (hey, I have dined with view of something grander, say Eiffel Tower :). Nonetheless, I was vowed, by Celestine. I think, I was mostly surprised about how can a restaurant with amazing food and view, can also be so down-to-earth. I came in last Sunday brunch time when NYC miraculously jumped back to 50F from the painfully cold Bomb Cyclone. Met up with my BFF visiting from Chicago, we ferried across the river, venturing into the burb ;) We were 30 mins late for our reservation. But the friendly host sat us right away at a table where we had unobtrusive view of the Manhattan Bridge. The sight of expansive iron bridge standing up proud and shinny against the winter sun and Manhattan skyline was absolutely a mood booster given given all the idiocracy happening in the US during the weekend, i.e. government shutdown, Trump, Tide Pod Challenge...oy. Anyway, to the food. One word, amazing. East Mediterranean with a modern twist. I skipped my usual - shashuka and instead, venturing out with the steamed egg with lamb belly, wheat berries, ricotta and zhug sauce. So glad I took the risk! The wheat berries, soaking up the essence of lamb with a slightly chewy consistency, were savory and scrumptious. The lemon zest helped highlighting the flavor profile and lighten up the meatiness. Not the first time I tried zhug but the version at Celestine was the best I have had - fresh, fragrant and actually spicy but not overwhelmingly so. The dish was perfectly sized, not big yet very satisfying small caveat - the egg was almost well done :/ should have told them I prefer runny egg yolk. Friend and I also shared a side of baba ghanoush. I am a proclaimed baba ghanoush aficinado. The version at Celestine, while not as smoky as I prefer,was interesting in the texture and seasoning. the poppyseeds added additional crunchy texture and nutty flavor; the grains of paradise were used for seasoning. Fancy as it sound, it is a type of black pepper-like spice from Africa, yet it had more complex flavor presenting a zesty zinc, coriander and gingery aroma. It came with two warm and fluffy oven baked flatbread dusted za'atar. Tore off a piece of bread, fill it with a spoonful spread, chew on. It is like, hugging a Teddy Bear :) yes, that was how good it was. Friend had the lamb kebob with salad and flatbread. Was good. But I like mine more. Service was friendly and helpful. I also love the bright and airy interior; it reminds me of Santorini, GR. I will surely return and checked out the dinner items! And the shashuka :) read more

Recently booked this place for 13 people for a birthday brunch. Was really excited because of the location and abundance of great reviews. Also, Rachel that was assisting me in the reservation was super attentive and responsive. My reservation was for 1 PM and I arrived 15 minutes early to greet everyone since I was the birthday girl. The table was not ready at all which was okay until it wasn't ready 10 minutes after 1pm either. My guests started arriving and we were all just awkwardly standing there until about 1:20pm when the table was arranged for us. The most disappointing aspect of this brunch was that we didn't order anything extra other than some mimosas and the brunch came out to $100 per person (which is fine) but we all left extremely hungry. There was really nothing to eat. Everything also came out at almost the same time. The dishes that were separated on the menu were pretty much just side dishes that fit all on one plate. We all had to go back to my place so I can make us food lol. I understand this place is healthy and all but seriously expected much much more. We were all shocked. Hello, I think this place is very misleading. Online it looks like a 4 star place to eat with an amazing view but when you get there your easily mistaken. Although the view IS amazing, that's kinda where it ends. I have been to Applebee's and felt like I was in a more "fancy restaurant " I'm actually so surprised that someone can wait on us wearing lime green shoes and half a shirt and this place has 4 stars? They need to change the dress code there to something more say 4 star worthy. Definitely not my kind of atmosphere for sure a little strange as I expect way better, fix your website, dress code and a bigger menu and then maybe I'd consider coming back. Extremely pricey with unfocused service. You are mostly paying for the view, which is the underside of the Manhattan Bridge, which makes me wonder if even that is worth the price. Still at sunset, with the all glass walls and the gentle setting, it is a lovely moment. Drinks were novel and good. Room pretty. People also pretty. However, the service left much to be desired. The room was not full, and yet we suffered long waits for our courses and for our server's attention. Our server floated about the room, exhibiting a casual, chatty manner, which, although it might delight some customers to have one's server making extended small talk at one's table, failed to deliver the attentive experience that I would expect for the very dear price this establishment demands for its Mediterranean offerings, many of which are simply street food with lipstick painted on (falafel, hummus, etc...). I had the Flatiron steak, which consisted of 8 or 10 slices of tender and nicely seasoned meat but for the price, I could have enjoyed a formidable, dry aged 16 oz New York Strip at many a well known steakhouse in NYC. My companions ordered the whole Branzino. Again, delicious and tender, but for the price not so sure it was worth it. The bill when it arrived, was heart stopping. Never again. Based on location and positive yelp reviews, I was really looking forward to trying this place. Unfortunately, the only thing Celestine has going for it is the view. Located under the Manhattan bridge with a lovely patio area for outdoor seating and an interior with large windows looking at the Manhattan Bridge, it is very appealing. As for the menu, there was nothing that stood out for me and it was extremely overpriced. To make matters worse is that we ordered a $29 Mezze platter and were brought 3 pieces of pita bread. At the time, I didn't know the pita bread was an extra charge. I asked for additional pita bread because the 3 were not enough for dipping (we were a party of 3-that would be 1 pita per person). We were charged $18 for 6 small pieces of pits bread. Are you kidding me? Were we supposed to eat hummus with a spoon or our fingers? Most establishments pita bread is included. So your pita bread has a little bit of olive oil and salt and pepper. So what? Talk about nickel and diming your customers to an already very expensive dining experience. When I complained to the server, the manager came over and gave me $6 off the pita bread, as if he was doing me a favor. How cheap! He should've taken the entire pita charge off. It should be noted that not once did the server explain the pita bread was going to be extra. Moving on to dinner...I had the Lobster Tagliatelle and it was like eating Chef Boyardee with some lobster on top. It was not good at all. To conclude the evening, as we were leaving, there was a rat on the entrance steps that ran by us. He picked amazing wines and after dinner drinks for my husbands birthday!
