Cedarhurst Cafe is absolutely lovely. The medicine ball chairs on one wall, the homey tables in the center, and the local artist art on the walls provide such different atmospheres that blend together surprisingly well. The bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich I had was spiced perfectly. The bacon was the proper level of crisp, and the cheese was the perfect amount of melt-y. My friend ordered the giant blueberry muffin and the staff heated it up for her so it had a the freshly baked warmth to it. The free refill on my coffee was certainly a nice addition. I just got robbed $9.50 for the worst acai bowl I've ever had. The acai was watery at best, I cant make this up. Old bananas with brown Mark's. The lady came and slid it across the table like it was a beer lol. Awful service, using Yale University jack up prices. For christ sake I live in Brooklyn and I dont pay more than $7.50 for the same amount but drastically higher quality. Editing review: I wrote this review while still at the location. Before I could even leave the owner called into the store and asked their employee to track down who wrote the review. A clear sign the lack of customer services stems from the owner him/herself. Instead maybe try connecting with your customers and reply back, try to make it right, I dunno, do something about it. Unreal. Never going back Edited review/response. I was in no way shape or form being unreasonable. The acai bowl was watery and the bananas brown. The waitress literally slide the bowl across the table. So, how am I being unreasonable about that? I wish the employees would kick out the coffee shop squatters who seem glued to their laptops and occupy every seat inside this joint. I call them coffee shop squatters because you know the type.... they're the people who buy a $2 cup of coffee and feel that buys them 3 hours of seat time. Well things don't work like that in the real world, folks. It only prevents good paying customers like myself from finding an empty seat. Such was the case one particular Saturday afternoon. I simply wanted 15 minutes of seat time, that's all. But from the looks of it "study hall" was clearly in session during my visit. Every customer was staring at their laptop, nobody was talking, and it was so silent you could hear a pin drop. So after plopping down 8 bucks, I grabbed my purchase, and regrettably walked out the door... From the looks of the neighborhood I suspect a lot of the squatters come from the dumpy looking apartments directly next door. So squatters; please take my advice... study at home... or at the library. That's what I did while in college and it served me well. And leave the seats to the paying customers with jobs. They're the ones that keep most businesses afloat. You might learn that after you graduate. read more

This cafe is small, cozy and beautiful (rustic tables n a huge glass wall n the exercise ball chairs). The decor and the menu looks at variance to other cafes. The price is a little high but could match for the quality of the food being served. I tried the Belgian waffles with Nutella, banana n whip cream! Amazingly delicious everything was gone in a few minutes! I also got an almond latte... Omg so creamy n delicious... My husband had a plain bagel sandwich, it had cream cheese, onions, tomatoes! He said he liked it! Good big sized bagel! They had three to four variety of bagels.. And for my little one, he got a carrot muffin... He loved it so much n he ended up finishing the whole thing, where I just got one bite to taste. Huge size n heavenly things loaded in there like the coconut, carrots, cinnamon, raisins... Yum.. Ah, yes. A good ole, family-owned cafe. Tucked into the fringes of downtown New Haven, Cedarhurst is easy to miss! I come to Cedarhurst at least once a week, if not up to three times. From the reliable wifi to the amazing spicy vanilla latte and the plethora of fresh food options, it serves all of my needs! It's close to school as well, so I like to stop by and get some readings done before or after class with my friends. The cozy environment is comfy enough to put my mind at ease without compromising my work ethic. It's also a great place to have meetings, meet up with friends, and just sit and journal! The service definitely takes a while since they make everything on the spot. I would try to avoid the lunch rush as much as possible, because you may remain waiting for a while. Their food is hit or miss--I would peruse the menu closely, as some of the options seem extremely overpriced. Others seem moderately priced and offer good value for money. On the other hand, their flavored lattes are great! Additionally, I don't think the pastries are as fresh/homemade as their other food offerings, so I would suggest not getting one, unless you're absolutely desperate. All in all, if you're not in a rush, down for a good hot flavored latte, this is your spot! Otherwise, best to go elsewhere. read more

This little cafe is a delightful treat! Warm, inviting with beautiful distressed woods and giant glass windows to people watch. The light and airy feeling is complimented by delicious fresh food and incomparable customer service. The chicken Caesar wrap was delicious and refreshing. Crisp lettuce, freshly grilled chicken and a tasty dressing was a pleasing combination and perfect for early lunch. The salted caramel latte was creamy with the perfect amount of salt. A great balance between sweet and salty and served in a giant mug. We also sampled honey vanilla ice cream and twix ice cream made by the Walnut Beach Creamery in Milford, CT. They both had a silky feel but the honey was truly the winner. Light and slightly sweet from the honey, it would make a good accompaniment to the homemade chocolate chip and pretzel cookie. They bake all their muffins and cookies! With warm and friendly service from the owners, you must make a stop if you are in New Haven! It's a lovely place to study (that's what most of the clientele appears to be doing, at least), with wide windows and chill music at a volume loud enough to appreciate but not so loud you can't focus on your work. The owners/workers are super friendly (quite likely to give you a little extra on your smoothie, to bring your order to you themselves with a smile and a friendly line or two). They recognize regulars by name, and treat people who aren't as if they're just as welcome. I haven't tried the coffee yet, so I can't speak to that, unfortunately. The smoothies are straight and simple--you have a choice of yogurt, soy milk or almond milk for the base, and a nice choice of fruits or veggies. IMPORTANT NOTE: No sweeteners are added--you do that yourself (they have raw cane sugar, honey, and a variety of spices on the side for your mix-and-matching pleasure!). Their breakfasts can be ordered all day! Which is great because I like the belgian waffle--a freshly made warm and filling waffle generously covered in whipped cream and prettily-arranged strawberry slices, with a dispenser of syrup on the side. Last but not least, everyone should come by at least once to see the YOGA BALL CHAIRS. If you're short (like me) you might not be able to sit quiiiite on top of the ball and still have your feet touch the ground, since they're on little chair rests (to keep the balls from rolling around too much on their own if no one is sitting in them, I guess?). Still, it's great if you're planning to be sitting for a long time, and being able to bounce a little in place helps keep my spirits up when I'm working on something particularly dull or frustrating! Long story short: cosy atmosphere, super friendly staff, healthy options that aren't forced down your throat (and might even be fun)! Good place to study or engage in other quiet activity. YOGA BALLS: You must try the yoga balls at least once ( unless there is only one left, in which case you should leave it for me and try again another day). Seems to be a largely student-driven crowd coming through here but everyone was quiet and respectful; maintaining a study-friendly, work-conducive environment. The staff was friendly and helpful. I have lived here for years and have heard people talk about how great this place is. I finally made it there! It's a little bit off of the typically traveled path in New Haven. However, it's clear that its location doesn't stop people from coming! It was pretty busy throughout my stay. The staff members are very nice. I love that they offer food and drinks in reusable mugs and plates if you're dicing in. Despite it being small, they have many different types of areas to sit and talk or do work in--a high top bar area, a low bar area with exercise ball seats, small tables, bigger tables, round tables, square tables, etc etc. I can't wait to go there again! Expect to wait a very long time for food. Which is very mediocre, honestly, for the price. It took literally 15 minutes for them to get our egg sandwich out ($7+ with "veggies" which was just a tiny slice of tomato and a piece of basil) and we were anxious about getting to an appointment, which we are now running late for. The staff is very nice. Nothing against them, except that they're a bit confused and obviously too slow for the amount of orders they're getting. Need like 5 more people in that kitchen. Were getting everyone's orders wrong, and this poor delivery guy was waiting for way longer (I'm sure he didn't get a tip from the people he delivered to). Bummer. Kind of a hit or miss. You will almost always need to wait at least ten minutes for a drink. The chai lattes are watered down half the time, the other half they're pretty good. The inconsistency is frustrating because you don't really know if the food/drink is worth the wait. And with prices as they are, you'd expect to have consistently good food and drinks. That's just obnoxious! They do have wifi and they do have a beautiful store and huge windows and natural light. But still, order food, order pastries, and for Christ's sake give the baristas a tip! I ordered a breakfast sandwich (sub everything bagel for $1 and added veggies for $1) YUM. came out pipping hot, tasted super fresh and wasn't super messy like other breakfast sandwiches. Might be the best day ever! Egg sandwich is everything and the cappuccino was perfect! The coffee: The temperature was perfect. The coffee was not bitter at all. They actually knew how to steam the almond milk to make it frothy and delicious; most places over steam and burn. Egg sandwich: I got an egg and cheese on an English muffin with avocado. The egg was cooked perfectly. The cheese was melty and melded perfectly with the added spices. The muffin was not soggy or too crispy. The place: Great vibe, great music. Not too loud, not too busy. It wasn't terribly difficult to find parking. The staff was pleasant and delivered our food and drink quickly. I did not have the same experience as previous reviews.
