We went here based off the recommendation by Rick Steves. We loved it! They had allowed me to make a reservation for 11 people (we split into two parties of 5/6). The service was great! Our waitress explained the menu well and gave excellent recommendations. Our pasta was cooked perfectly. I had the regular pesto dish. I loved it the freshness of the flavor and the pine nuts! We also got the cannelloni based of the waitress's recommendation. Yes it has anchovies in it, but there's not an overwhelmingly anchovy taste. This was a dish full of savory flavors. We finished with the wagyulem beef! We would go here again without people who just wanted basic spaghetti. read more

After reading recommendations from Rick Steves and Yelp we decided to have lunch at Cavour 313. What a great little hidden gem! This wine bar is very cozy and has a great collection of wines at very reasonable prices. This restaurant is tucked away from the nearby tourist traps yet it is conveniently a few blocks from the Colisseum and Forum. The lasagna didn't hold a candle to my mom's, but the antipasto platter was great. We could hardly believe how cheap our lunch was! Two lasagnas, antipasto platter, a bowl of soup and a bottle of wine was less than 30 euros. read more

I was staying in the Monti area and found this enoteca on Rick Steve's list of recommendation. Cavour 313 is so cool. They store their wine in the rafters above the restaurant level and use a cherry picker like pole to pluck the bottles when ordered. I showed up for dinner and ordered the Piatto Del Giorno (a pasta dish = 12 euros) and an insalata (7 euros). The food was good. They serve yummy country bread which the waitress slices and grabs out of an old-fashioned wooden drawer bin. The wait staff can get busy and pass you by so you have to flag them down to get your bill. When I went out to pay the bill, the owner was manning the cash register. We chatted about wine for a while. His knowledge about pairing wine with food was wonderful and this was really such a pleasant experience. Cavour 313 has a very chill vibe. The food is good. The people are nice. If you're in the Monti neighborhood of Rome and want a glass of wine, check this place out. You'll have a fine time. read more

If you're in the Colosseum or Roman Forum area, there isn't a huge list of local, quaint restaurants to choose from. Something I didn't know before my vacation is that Yelp is very American-centric. Therefore if you see a restaurant with 400-500 reviews, it's probably a tourist trap. If someone is outside selling you to come inside, it's a tourist trap. With that said, we walked past the entrance to here because it was so unassuming. We had to double back. Finally, we saw the window with all of the award stickers and entered. We were one of the first three couples in for dinner about 15 minutes after open, but our server was incredibly friendly. She helped us pick an excellent bottle of wine and we started through the menu. My wife and I ate dinner here three times during our trip to Rome. Here are the highlights: -The pork tenderloin is absolutely fantastic. It is as good as some people's pictures make it seem. -The beef stew in an anchovy "broth" was not a stew in the American sense. It did not come with the stew part... it was just a big pile of the most tender meat I've ever tasted. I am not complaining. It may have been the meatiest meat I've ever eaten and I eat a lot of meat. The savory element of the anchovies was absolutely soaked into it. -The cured meat plate appetizers are fun to try and very tasty. -The desserts were so-so. I would skip dessert here and get gelato. The tortellini soup was also ok. However, most of the food here was fantastic and well worth the price, which is why it still gets 5 stars. -The atmosphere and ambiance is great, with a lot of exposed wood and the wine in the rafters and tourists and locals alike. It was our magical getaway after a day of sightseeing. -A final note on the wine list: I don't know a lot about wine. But it was more of a wine book than a wine list. And when I say book I mean at least 50-100 pages. They will have something that appeals to you. My overall advice is that this is a great choice with all of the tourist traps nearby. I would stick to meat dishes as your best bets, but the entire experience was great. read more

Sublime, and it isn't just the wine talking. Enoteca Cavour 313 has been here for over a decade and remains a firm favourite with the cognoscenti. The food specialties are just divine and include braised beef in anchovy sauce, pork with hazelnut and honey, marinated fish, carpaccio in dozens of ways, spinach salad wih pears and herbs, carrot salad with parsley, peppery rocket and walnuts, cheeses by the dozen . . . . . you get the picture, this is no pizza/pasta joint. The interior is essentially a wine shop decked out like a Charles Rennie Mackintosh interior with the wine bottles suspended above you. The food is largely organic and the menu is divided into regional specialities, the better to pair with wine you see! Wth these reviews I had decent expectations. I have found great places using yelp with mostly locals. The food was pretty good not great. The wine menu is outstanding. The reason for the review is honestly the service and attitude was just so poor it really brought the night down. The lasagne was great , but the cannelloni was super heavy with very greasy cheese (very American almost). My girlfriend didn't eat it. No big deal. Waitress asked if we didn't like. We said it was a bit heavy and greasy. Oh well we ordered it. Most of the time they at least offer a desert or a espresso on the house if the meal wasn't enjoyed. She simply shrugged her shoulders with "oh well look" and that was that. I believe it's family owned and the two women working today just seemed so stressed out. I speak Italian so it's not like I am an awful tourist asking for French fries and hamburgers. But smile a bit or at least look like you are not treading through pure hell bringing out plates. It really killed the vibes and other tourists/ Patrons mentioned the same thing. I have been to Rome 6 times. This is no gem by any means. I highly recommend that anyone staying or visiting the area near the Colosseum stop by this place for a small dinner. Their wine selection is superb, the food is absolutely fantastic and reasonably priced as well. They have daily menu selections, as well as a set menu of small and larger plates. It's definitely one of the best meals we had in Rome for the price. The service is friendly even for us tourists, even if it was a bit slow at times. Four stars for the great service, atmosphere, and appetizers. We came in for lunch after a long morning at the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill, so we were pretty hungry. Their cold cuts platter with a whole assortment of meats and cheese was delicious, and served with good bread as well. This platter was so huge that all of us weren't hungry by the time our main course arrived (which was just as well, since it was a wait between the two courses), but the waiter kept us entertained by answering our numerous questions about the area and explaining a little about the history of the restaurant. I had the pork loin with pistachio nuts and leek, and though I wasn't wow-ed by the meal itself, the crust with pistachio nuts was pretty damn impressive (and unique, though I noticed using pistachio in Rome as part of the meal isn't unheard of) and gave the food a nice texture and taste. My dad had the salmon, which was okay as well. My mom made the best choice of all and ordered this fish filet, which came with the skin that was perfectly crispy and flavorful. read more

Interior was appealing, food & service okay. Impressive wine selection and that's the highlight. We ordered the cheese plate to start. 2 of the 4 cheeses were tasty, other 2 I had to smother in honey to lessen the displeasing flavor. I don't mind being interrupted on the street by guys asking if we want to buy roses, but in a nice quiet restaurant it's a bit irritating, especially in a big busy city such as Rome, where you are constantly being hassled to purchase items. Dinner inside a restaurant is meant to be a relaxing escape from the busy city you spent the day in. We ordered the lasagna, which was pretty good. We also ordered the cannelloni. Cannelloni was super heavy & way too rich. I could not take more than 2 bites. Very disappointing. I politely expressed my opinion to one server only to receive a shoulder shrug & then be completely ignored by the other server. The menu was very small & the servers seemed to be disgruntled. Huge disappointment. Poor service, stale bread and so so food. We got the 2 house specials the bufalo platter which had Buffalo meat and mozzerrela, penne ragu and we got the white bean carpachio. The carpachio was actually pretty good, covered in olive oil with an abundance of white beans and aragula, thus was the high point of the meal. The Buffalo platter was less excited. The cheese had started to get hard and the meat was tough and not super flavorful. The penne ragu was fine but it tasted like something i could make in the US. I'm disappointed in yelp for steering me towards places that Americans rated highly and not places that Italians rated highly. read more

I came here with my husband for lunch. He ordered the lasagna and I had chicken with cous cous. The lasagna was cheesy, and the edges were deliciously crispy. The chicken was dry and the cous cous was a bit bland. The food was ok overall, nothing really special. The bathroom had no toilet paper. And I was not sure how to use the towel dispenser. It was a thick roll that isn't tearable and loops back into the dispenser. It seemed a bit weird and gross to me. Service was good. I noticed our waitress always peeping at us to make sure we were ok. read more

Genuinely great! Cavour was located pretty near my hotel and based on other reviews, I was willing to give it a chance. It's located among trinket shops and mediocre food lined up in a tourist trap street side, and if you only glance in, you'll think it's a deli. Walk past the bright lights and find an atmospheric, indulgent and personalized dining experience. I tried a new-to-me appetizer of thinly sliced pork with a soft cheese filling, drizzled with honey, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and hazelnuts. Out of this world good. The oxtail ragu ravioli I had to follow were outstanding as well. I had a good glass of wine (no expert in that) but it seemed they had a good selection of wines too. I'm not even sure I can fully describe the delightful gastronomic and oenological experience I just had at this Enoteca. This was my very first visit to Rome. I was walking the streets after my tour of the Colosseum and the Forum in a bit of a hangry mood. I was put off by some of the typical touristy restaurants, so I walked down the street a bit further to see some very appealing dishes on their daily menu (in Italian, not English, just saying; this was a good thing for people seeking lot the authentic.). This was EXACTLY what I was looking to experience in Rome! It was a slow start to get seated and get someone's attention, but once I got the order in...OMG. This locale serves tasting plates, similar to Spanish tapas, so you'd want to order two or three, if you're hungry like a wolf. I had the Spicy Carpaccio with anchovies, the Pork Tenderloin encrusted with pistachios, a spinach, pear and ricotta salad, and capped it off with Chocolate Mousse. Every bite of every dish was simply sumptuous. Now, I'll be the first to admit, my knowledge of Italian wine sucks, so I asked the server (who spoke French and English, btw) to choose the pairings for me. She took me through a veritable Tour of Italy! The woman knows her stuff, and I was the giddy beneficiary of her pairing prowess. All in all, the four-course custom pairing set me back 61 Euros. Any place that would do that back in the States would easily charge almost double. This was truly world class fare from a world class city. Arrivederci Roma! I hope to return soon... read more

Seemed a bit weird. Wasn't very friendly or doesn't speak good English. I guess we were the foreigners, so not much communication expected. But he could have been friendlier. Have been coming here every trip to Rome. Why? Wine. The wines by the glass are well chosen, priced fairly, and always interesting. Its when you get to the bottle list that your head spins. I wish I had photographed every page and posted them here...Yelp would kill me, because the list is truly enormous and overwhelming. It covers every region of Italy, and LOTS of wines per region. Want to learn about the wines of Lombardy? Alto-Adige? How about Basilicata in the south? Well, if you catch the ear of the patient and long suffering servers here you can negotiate this intimidating tome. The only thing like it I've seen is the equally intimidating list at the Italian Village in Chicago. You might be looking at all those wines near the ceiling and fretting about heat exposure. The good stuff is in an actual cellar, fear not. The menu here is odd, in a good way. I've loved the cheeses, salumi, and seafood dishes. Ask about specials, or this being Rome, what's in season. Minor complaints: it is often too hot in here, and a tad too bright. This isn't really a romantic, intimate spot, but more of a friends getting together after work meeting point...prepare to see lots of loud, happy Romans coming here and greeting friends and being loud, happy Romans. Loud happy Romans are of course one of the city's main attractions, and they are very much on display here. read more

A hidden gem in central Rome. The wine "cellar" is actually the wooden beams criss-crossing above the tables in the restaurants, making the sommelier carefully fish down the bottles of wine with a rod when ordered. Food is rustique and of high quality - price is reasonable. Vegetarian lasagne is one of my favourites even though I'm not a vegetarian, so is the platter of cold cuts. Lunchtime is usually ok for getting a table, but expect to queue up for a table in the evening. (It's worth mentioning the establishment is recommended in the Gambero Rosso - the Italian equivalent of the Michelin Guide) read more

This restaurant was wonderful! It's off the beaten path, and more like a wine cellar that serves food. The menu is small. We ordered a bottle of chianti classico, split a prosciutto/salami appetizer, and each had a pasta dish. My wife really enjoyed the vegetarian lasagna she ordered. It was plenty of food for dinner and the price was very reasonable. Hopefully we will get back to Rome someday, and if we do, we will definitely go back to Cavour 313. read more

Finally found it. Another site had this place with a different name and we missed it and ended up dining elsewhere. After dinner while wondering around we finally found this place. Great selection of wine with a wonderfully old-school ambiance. The better vintages are kept up in the rafters and when ordered, the waitstaff use a grabber to get down the appropriate bottles. Was really surprised that tour groups frequent this place. Wished we could have tried more of the menu but having already eaten we stuck with a mixed prosciutto platter and a mixed cheese platter with a fabulous bottle of Valpolicella to wash it down. So delicious we dined here twice! 1st time we had a party of 8 and everything was amazing, food, wine and service. We tasted a large portion of the menu with one complaint, the smoked trout tasted more poached then smoked. When we returned to Rome 2 weeks later we were impressed again. This place was recommended in both mine and my friend's travel books, so we decided to make a stop. This is the BEST food we had in Italy and probably some of the best service we have ever had in our lives. We walk in and the waiter asks "Do you speak English?" We said yes and he proceeded to hand us menus in English. My friend heard him ask someone else "Do you speak French" so I would assume they have menus for several different languages, which is really great. My friend and I were split on what to get. She wanted carpaccio, I was split between lasagna and cous cous. Our waiter was extremely accommodating. He recommended carpaccio for her, and said if she didn't like it, he'd bring her something else, no charge. As for me, since I couldn't decide (and neither could he), he brought me "small" (they were rather large) portions of each, and charged me for only one. The service doesn't stop here, but we also asked for wine recommendations. He brought out 2 wines, with 4 glasses, so we each could try. We picked one, and at the end of the meal discovered that it was only 4 Euro per glass. I really appreciated this; he could have taken advantage of us American tourists by bringing us out glasses that were more expensive than our meal, but he gave us the cheap, delicious stuff instead. As for the food, the lasagna was amazing. Best I have ever had. I don't know what it was (maybe the meat sauce), but it was sweet. My friend ended up eating half of my plate. The cous cous was very good as well. The appearance of it was very appetizing as well. If you're looking for an inexpensive, amazing Italian meal with great service, go here.
