Will echo some of the earlier reviews - do NOT come if you are doing a tour of the Jewish ghetto and JUST want to try the fried artichokes. We came here as it was recommended by one of the top Google search results for fried artichoke in Rome. Arrived at opening (12:30) on a weekday. We were the first customers but filled up over the course of the hour we were there. Service was attentive. Pasta was perfectly cooked and very tasty. We had Spaghetti Alla Carbonara and Bucatini All'Amatriciana. Sauce on the latter was soo good. Dining area inside had multiple rooms. This was a very nice restaurant in a little back place. We were able to sit in a window, which was open because of the heat. Wonderful atmosphere. Traditional Roman food. Food was decently good with nice flavor, but the service was absolutely atrocious. We had a group and our order was entered incorrectly for three different members and they made us pay for the food they accidentally doubled. When we questioned the waiter, he ripped up the receipt. He made two members of our group cry and it ruined a special birthday for our friends. Don't come here, to go any of the other restaurants in the city. read more

Local recommendation with old world charm We had a recommendation from a friend who stated this was a great local restaurant to try near where we stayed. The food was very good. I think the service was a little lax which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars. I had a chicken dish which was good. They made a nice pasta dish for our so. Who was traveling with us and accommodated him (16 months) with a high chair which is a plus. The atmosphere was very nice. The only downside was that the servers seemed to be always there but non attentive. At two points I motioned for one and he acknowledged me then walked in a different direction. This restaurant was a wonderful discovery! Recommended by a friend who is a native Roman, our large party of 14 visiting from the US was easily accommodated through a reservation by email made a week or so before our arrival. We were looking for traditional Roman dishes. The menu was extensive, and the dishes did not disappoint! The service was excellent--warm and friendly wait staff. My research on the internet for Jewish artichokes pointed to this restaurant, so we walked here after touring the Ancient Roman ruins. Upstairs, the restaurant had a nice old school vibe to it with the white table clothes. We ordered the Jewish artichokes and squash blossoms, both very classic Roman appetizers. Both were delicious. For my pasta, I had the special of the day - tomato, mozzarella, and shaved truffle. DANG that was some good pasta. I've never had anything like that in the States. Two appetizers, a pasta, and a meat dish came out to 41 Euros, then you do the math to USD. LOL. That's more than our typical lunch back home, but we're on vacation! Bathrooms were big (relatively speaking) and clean. Yay, very important when you're playing tourist all day long. read more

Super friendly, personal service and classic Italian Jewish fare. The gnocchi with truffle cream sauce and fried squash flowers are to die for, the tripe excellent, the grilled calamari eh. The house red was surprisingly good for a 10€ bottle. The tiramisu was the best I've had so far in Rome. read more

Their ravioli was amazing. Just incredibly tender and delicate. The ricotta and spinach and cream sauce were really subtle but came together wonderfully. The carbonara was perfect. Done at just the right temperature so the egg retains its proper consistency. Not even a hint of thickening/scrambling. Much better than average tiramisu. Really nice staff. read more

We had just finished visiting the Coliseum and we were starving. Found this place listed in a travel guide so we made a point to find it. Tucked away so its not totally easy to find- the restaurant is actually upstairs. Its located in the Jewish neighborhood. Had the cannelloni and veal saltimboca. Tried the fried artichoke. Amazing. The only disappointing meal we had in our 8-day stay. Very much a typical restaurant in Rome - catering to locals as well as tourists. All in all seemed a bit "tired". Fried artichoke - seems to have been warmed over - had much better in other restaurants. Ditto the arancini. Very friendly staff - but there are much better options within walking distance of this location. read more

Forget the tourist trap restaurant, this is fine dining at a reasonable price. The best gnocchi with truffle that I ever had. True Italian dishes served in an old school manner by a staff from the waiters to chefs that make this establishment one to put on your must do list. read more

Hands down, best meal we had in Rome. My cousin and her husband who live above Trastevere took us there. It was great from the moment we were showed to our table. Friendly service, excellent wine list, and the food was cooked to perfection. It was the best Cacio e Pepe my wife and I had in our 17 day stay in Italy. We also ordered the Bucatini All'amatriciana, the grilled lamb chops, and the breaded veal cutlet. If you've never had fried squash blossoms, treat yourself to that as an appetizer. I found this on Elizabeth Minchilli's blog and am SO happy we went! We didn't try the artichokes because we had appetizers at Nonna Betta (see my review). They looked delicious, though! The restaurant itself is tucked away in the Jewish Ghetto. The interior is classy and well decorated. The staff is lovely too. We interacted with a woman who seemed to be the owner and who was so sweet, as well as our server who was so friendly and accommodating. We had a quarter carafe of the house red, which was the best house red we had in Rome. We split 3 dishes: 1) the gnocchi in a truffle cream sauce: usually we don't like cream sauces, but this was divine!--light and airy with that pungently wonderful truffle flavor, and the gnocchi were a beautiful balance of fluffy and dense; 2) the linguine with artichoke sauce, on the server's recommendation. Neither of us had ever eaten something like this before, and we were very pleased with our order--so unique and so delicious; and 3) Codfish alla Romana (a red sauce with onion, raisins, and pinenuts)--the codfish is some of the best I've ever had, and the sauce was just incredible. We trusted out taxi driver when he told us he was taking us to a place where only the Romans eat. This was before my yelp days. Otherwise, I would have clearly used the app! Al pompiere had an old school atmosphere. Tucked away in the narrow streets of a Jewish neighborhood in Rome-dubbing it a "Jewish Ghetto Classic" that serves up the holy trinity of pasta dishes-Carbonara, Amatriciana and Cacio e pepe. The restaurant is actually located on the second floor. We may have heard a little bit of English spoken here and there, but it turns out we were surrounded by locals and quite elegant ones. The wait staff speaks English and they now how to read a tourist, but they gladly engaged with us in Italian. We came here for the "holy trinity" each thoroughly enjoyed our Spaghetti ala carbonara and Amatriciana. We started out with fried zucchini flowers- another typical Roman dish and burrata. Both the carbonara and the Amatriciana were decadent in every way. This meal was Among my favorites for classic Roman food away from the touristy plazas scattered throughout the city. I would NOT recommend! Felt rushed to order, appetizer, fried artichoke okay, filet ordered for dinner, came out nearly RAW, requested to be cooked further, returned within 2 minutes, gray on the outside and still fairly raw in the middle, fileted it so it could be cooked through easier, came back after about 15-20 minutes inedible. Waiter could care less, just shrugged his shoulders. Husband ordered veal scaloppini, came as one big fried piece of veal on a plate, not very appealing. VERY disappointed. In the old jewish Quarter A very nice -although a little dark- restaurant in the old jewish "ghetto" of Rome. Menu is richly filled with a lot of Roman specialities. I tried as "primi" the spaghetti alla carbonara, which was delicious because of the quality of the bacon. As main dish I took Ossobuco alla Romana, an excellent choice. Service is as excellent as it is quick (by Roman standards). Al Pompiere is also popular with local people. read more
