I read an article in RomaToday that gave recommendations for where to eat in Testaccio, and Checchino dal 1887 seems like our style, so we checked it out. Our tastes veer towards classically prepared dishes and this restaurant checked all the right boxes. The service in the restaurant was fantastic, including a very professional wait staff, some of which were white jacketed. We started with a Lazio red wine, which was fantastic as their wine menu divides them into light, medium and full bodied (strutturati) options, which helped us quite a bit. I was very surprised by the way that the bottle and glasses were prepared for us. The process is called "priming" or "seasoning" the glass, which is a technique (originating in Italy) that involves pouring a bit of wine, about an ounce, into the glasses and swirling it to coat the bowl before discarding it. It removes any leftover flavors or aromas from when the glass was washed or stored. Pretty cool and a new experience for us. For an appetizer we shared a small taste of beans and cotiche, which were beans in a tomato sauce cooked with pork rinds. It was delicious and really got me in the fall mood. My main dish was Rigatoni al Sugo di Coda, which was a deliciously slow cooked oxtail stew and a Roman tradition. Slow cooking meat like this is a favorite and they didn't disappoint. My wife's dish was another traditional pasta: Bucatini alla Gricia. It was unsurprisingly equally enjoyable. We each finished the meal with an espresso to go along with our Tiramisu and Panna Cotta. We left with a smile on our faces and a plan to return in the near future. This is a strong recommendation if you enjoy traditional Roman fare.

When in Rome, eat as the Romans...okay, if you don't have family & friends there like I do then you'd have to go in search of real Roman cuisine and this lovely, cosy restaurant in Testaccio is not to be missed. We dined here (sometimes nice to have a night out) and nothing disappointed. Greeted with a smile and quick seating (we had a reservation - be sure to make one). Let me get to the goodies...all the dishes were paired with a wine. Bruschetta w/pecorino & sage - paired with an extremely delicious wine called Cannellino Trippa alla Romana - my 1st time and it was not at all what I expected. Light, tasty and the way it was cooked and seasoned was perfect. Oxtail (forget the Italian name) - hearty, meat falling from the bone succulent Puntarella - a sharp tasting root veg with a moorish dressing that makes it curl when wet. Yum! Biscotti w/Moscato wine - wine cookies so good Torta di pere cioccolato salsa - devilishly good warm chocolate tart/cake on a plate...oh my goodness, this one is real trouble! We spent a good amount of time in here because that's how Italian's eat..no wolfing down of food. It's a full on social experience at home and at restaurants. Loved it. Very warm and cosy environment, perfectly timed service. The price for two will set you back about 80-85 Euros but we work so no issue and I am still thinking about every bit of food and every moment we enjoyed here!

Dinner at Checcino Dal in Trastravere. - Pasta e ceci- traditional pasta and chickpea soup with rosemary - Bucatini alla Gricia- Long hollow spaghetti served in a white sauce made with ewe's milk cheese and pig's cheek - Coda alla vaccinara - Ox-tail stewed in a tomato sauce with celery, pine nuts, and raisins - Petto di vitello alla fornara - Oven roasted veal breast - Carciofo alla Romana - artichoke in olive oil and white wine - Panna cotta - cream custard with berry sauce This was an excellent and delicious meal. The pig cheeks in the bucatini were more like bacon, so the dish was similar to the typical roman briny, rustic flavors. The ox tail had an excellent sauce, claimed to be cooked for 7 hours - it had pine nuts and spices, the ox it self was not cooked as tender as Pirelli but the sauce was flavorful. The oven roasted veal was good. The side of artichoke was interesting and tasty and ending the meal with the panna cotta was just perfect! Service was good and meal totaled about 85 Euros.

Cacio e Pepe: overwhelming pepper flavor that was numbing to the tongue. Curdled cheese that left grainy texture in the mouth. Unpleasant.

My family and I started with the prosciutto and buffalo goat cheese served with oil and pepper, which was my favorite part of the entire meal. We also ordered a pretty good vegetable lasagna, a chicken dish with a delicious sauce, and two gnocchi dishes, including a carbonara-style one. Everything came out quickly, and there were unique items displayed around the restaurant that you could try and buy, which made the experience even more fun. We were so full from the appetizer that we only ate about half of the gnocchi. The owner noticed and kindly refunded those dishes, saying we should not pay for something we barely touched. That level of thoughtfulness is rare and left a huge impression on us. Overall, Masto is an amazing restaurant with fantastic food, quick service, and some of the kindest staff you will ever meet. I would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone visiting Rome.

After shopping at Porto Portese, we walked to this Testaccio neighborhood to taste their blueberry…read morerisotto among other items. We arrived as soon as they opened, and the Chef was very friendly and offered some samples of cheese including his burrata, which was incredible! Everything we sampled was delicious! We felt so special because we were the only ones there when it opened and it felt like we had a personal chef! The blueberry risotto and pasta were worth the walk over here! Loved this place! The ambiance was incredible!
