I read about their gnocchi as one of the must try pastas in Rome. They happened to be just a few blocks from where we were staying, so we came here for dinner. Unlike in the US where you can get dinner at 5pm, a lot of places in Rome don't open until 7:30 or 8pm (it was 8pm for L'Arcangelo). It was full shortly after opening, so make sure you get a reservation. They do have a fixed menu option for €60 a person, but we opted for a la carte so that we could choose exactly what we wanted. Pastas are on the more expensive side compared to some other local places - around €15 each. Secondis are in the €23-25 range. When you sit down, you notice all the tables have toy cars on them - turns out it's because the chef wants people to think of their childhoods when they eat his food, which I thought was cute. The wine list has a good number of Italian bottles. Since we were in Rome (Lazio), we opted for a bottle of Cesanese. Amuse: - Bread: served warm, reasonably salted - better than most of the dry/unsalted bread we've had in Italy - Pumpkin soup with coffee, anchovy oil, bread: it was a nice surprise to have an amuse Food: - Lesso e Concia: Roman Jewish chicken meatballs. These were super tender, flavorful, with Parmesan crisps and fried vegetables, over an herb green sauce. These were surprisingly great. I would get these again - Tagliatelle: with a garofalato sauce (beef, garlic, onion, lard). Great flavor on the sauce. - Gnocchi: amatriciana - red sauce, pancetta. The texture was more pillowy, and the pork had a weird gaminess to it. I got it because it was a dish many reviews and articles talked about, but I think it's just not my style - Vegetables: cabbage, peas, and chicory. A little oily but good in flavor, and I needed some greens - Baccala: with crushed peppers and tomato sauce. The cod was a bit fishy, and it's a shame the tomato sauce wasn't warm, but overall it was a pretty solid dish with a bonus of some kale I ended up pretty full. We started off great with the chicken meatballs, but then I think most other dishes aside from the tagliatelle just weren't my style - they weren't bad but just not to my tastes ? I like that it's located farther from the old town tourist areas and has more of a neighborhood feel. Come with a reservation or come at 10pm when tables open up on a weekday. Note: there's also a 15% gratuity included in your bill. Credit cards accepted. The owner wasn't particularly friendly - when we walked in saying we had a reservation, we got some annoyed sounding Italian discussion between her and the waitress. However, as for our waitress, service was great - she was way more friendly than most other servers we've encountered in Italy, and her English was really good. I had read about L'Arcangelo so decided to give it a try. I had no issues with securing a dinner reservation for a Saturday evening in late June. I ordered the bitter arugula salad this was absolutely delicious and my favorite dish of the night. It was a beautiful blend of spicy/bitter arugula, sweet crunchy candied almonds with the most perfectly poached egg. It bursted with different flavors and textures-an excellent salad. I then had the classic carbonara for my entree which did not disappoint. I noticed little toy cars on every table so I inquired about this. The toy cars are meant to evoke your childhood and thus bringing joy and happiness while you eat which I thought was adorable. read more

100th review! When you get to L'Arcangelo, you'll find that the menu is extremely easy to navigate since the English translations of each dish are displayed right below each Italian label. After you order, your server will bring you an amuse-bouche of Tomato and Bread to start. Deliciously light and very representative of the flavors that this restaurant showcases! Next comes the primi and the sole reason we came to this restaurant: Gnocchi with Amatriciana Sauce. As soon as I took my first bite, I knew I had to order another plate of this - which I did! These were the most fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi I have ever had, and the sauce was the perfect savory complement. Before coming here, I had never had Amatriciana sauce before, but I later learned that this was a Roman specialty made of guanciale (pork jowl), pecorino cheese, and tomato, and is commonly featured in many pasta dishes. This plate of gnocchi was my favorite thing to eat in all of Rome, and perhaps the best thing I ate during my entire Europe trip. Jaw-droppingly good. Since we wanted to save a lot of room for just pasta, we ordered only one secondi to share. We loved watching our server present this dish, a smoke-concealed dish with a dome cover. As she lifted the lid off the plate, the smoke inside swirled up to reveal the Seared Pigeon with Mustard, Beets, Spinach, and Rosemary. Though the portion size was quite small, the pigeon itself was cooked perfectly and quite tasty. We also really appreciated that the pigeon had some foil wrapped around the leg bone to help us hold it in our hands without getting our fingers dirty - no knife or fork needed! And for dessert, we ordered the Beignets Stuffed with Citrus Custard and Caramel. Surprisingly, these were very light and not that sweet at all, so it was very easy for us to devour these. At 10 euros a plate though, I woudl skip dessert next time and order another (!) plate of pasta. read more

Really disappointed. I forget even how I found this place. I contacted my concierge service on my credit card to make reservations for us. I had such high hopes! The meal started with an amouse bouche which was the warm broccoli soup which was amazing! It was so good. It had a great balance of flavors and definitely started my digestion for the remainder of the meal. We ordered the Suppli appetizer that was highly recommended. It consisted of 4 fried items, one was an arrancini, another was cheese, then a candied walnut with anchovy. I forget what the fourth one was. The fritters or fried items were supposed to be eaten in a certain order. It was really good. I wish there were more, as they felt like a complete tease. I ordered the cod dish. This is when disaster struck. The cod was OVERLY salted, or that it was preserved in salt and it wasn't soaked enough to draw out the salt. It was completely inedible. It was served with what appeared to be lumpy (tasteless) mashed potatoes. I thought that if I ate the cod with the potatoes it would help. I was wrong. It did nothing. It was really too salty, and I love salt in my food. The waitress asked how it was, I explained it was too salty and I couldn't eat it. She took it away. I was still charged for it. I know we're in Europe and service completely differs from the States. But this was inedible, not because I was being a silly American. The boy ordered some meat dish, I forget what it was. It was good. But it wasn't amazing, especially considering that we just left Paris which almost everything we ate (except for when we stupidly went to cafes) was delicious and more than I had anticipated in terms of flavor profiles. Again: only option for still or sparkling water, which you have to pay - no tap water. I don't recommend this place. The restaurant was completely empty when we got there at 8:00 p.m. After sitting down, only one more table joined us at the restaurant. The restaurant is conveniently located right outside of Piazza Cavour. The wine we ordered was sour. Then, we ordered the Stupli to start. These rice ball appetizers had a hint of blue cheese my mom could not eat, and were too dense for her stomach. I personally just think they needed a dipping sauce. Contrarily, the meatballs appetizer was AMAZING. Three white meat meatballs lightly adorned by a green sauce. The gnocchi was delicious as well. Absolutely the most memorable and delicious meal we had during our visit to Rome. Make a reservation! Don't be like us. We showed up and at first they turned us away since it was a Saturday night & they were booked. But then after some convincing a very nice server allowed us to sit at the bar. I am so glad! The restaurant has a homey neighborhood feel and we got a front row seat to see the chef and kitchen in action. The wine list has a nice variety at reasonable price points. We ordered a bottle of Barbera which was exceptional. We also ordered the fried rice balls to start which are so tasty but also filling. Leave room because they also brought us a carrot soup and a pea/fava salad as starters. For the main meal we ordered the gnocchi. If this is on the menu you must get it. The chef has perfected these little pillows which melt in your mouth. I could eat them every day! Unfortunately we were too full to order dessert. Well after alot of research I just had to go and try the best gnocci in Rome. I emailed my request for a reservation and within 10 minutes I received a confirmation for my reservation. It was a nice place with decent decorations but they could have newspapers on the walls for all I care. Im going for the food and boy did they deliver. Service was very good which in Italy it seems to be extinct in most places. Our waitress was fast and on the ball. For our antipasto we had a octupuse with uncooked quinoa which was just amazing. So many flavors just in one dish. I highly recommend it. The real reason I went here was to try the gnocci amatriciana. It was incredible. Gnocci did not stick to each other and were ao light. The sauce was amazing with slices of bacon like little jewels hiding in the sauce. It was so good that by the time I remembered to take a picture I was already done. Good service and great food. I was looking for the best gnocchi in Rome, and this place repeatedly came up so I went to give it a try. The gnocchi is indeed super delicious! It's light and melts in your mouth (quite literally). The sauce that comes with it is light as well, tomatoey and has small pieces of fried pork (aka thick bacon). It was very good while it lasted. My only complaint is that it's super pricey for the amount you get, at €15, I would expect it to fill me up much more than it did; it almost seemed like a snack. The restaurant also charges 10% service, although the service was quite good. I would suggest coming to try the gnocchi, but be prepared to eat something else afterward! We made a reservation over 1 month in advance and noted that we would have our 15 month old daughter with us to make sure that would be all right. The restaurant confirmed our reservation. When we showed up last night, they had no record of the reservation and refused to seat us, even after we showed them the confirmation email. The restaurant was completely empty except for 2 tables. Having seen this restaurant featured in multiple guides and recommended by locals, I decided to bring my visiting parents here for their first meal in Rome. We decided to go for the tasting menu as a table of 3, which I personally found the restaurant to be very inflexible in that everyone at the table must order the tasting menu and select EXACT choice in tasting menu for it to be an available menu to the table. We decided to go for it nonetheless, as the menu seemed to include a good variety of dishes to sample, an antipasto (suppli), a primo (carbonara) and a dolce (profiteroles). The food was mediocre at best for its value, with the profiteroles being the saving grace of the meal. Overall this was a very underwhelming dinning experience, to which I will not be returning during my time in Rome. read more

After seeing a recommendation on Condé Nast traveler I decided to stop by. The time on yelp is wrong it says it's open from 7pm but I arrived at 7:30pm and they said open at 8. The host asked if I had a reservation and I did not. After being very mean and rude, She informed me the entire restaurant was booked and could not fit me in. I asked if I could come back at 8 and sit at the bar and she said it was fine. I came back at 8 to find a completely empty restaurant and one of the servers sat us at a table. I ordered a few things and didn't really like any of them. 2 hours into our meal what the host said was a fully booked restaurant ended up only being 3 other tables being sat which made me think the host is very judgmental and didn't want to seat us. Alone for the host I would not come back to this restaurant. She was very rude. The food was decent. Would not recommend. Better off finding pizza on the street. read more

First dish--a suppli and a potato croquette, much more far-reaching than that sounds, was amazing. So was an amuse-bouche of pumpkin soup with fried bread croutons. We had a reservation for 9 but we were exhausted and it was nearby, so we took a chance and dropped by just as it opened. The hostess at the front was very accommodating and sat us immediately. For people from the States, keep in mind that many traditional places do not open until 8 pm. This is Italy, not some strip mall spaghetti joint in some 'burb back home. When in Rome, do as the Romans do, not as Americans. By the time we left past 9, almost all the tables were occupied. The decor was understated, nothing flashy or over the top. We ordered the meatball entree, the goose liver, the pigeon, and the baccala. The service was very prompt and on point. Everything served was beautifully presented, particularly the pigeon, and cooked to perfection. Portions were small, as is typical for this sort of establishment, here or anywhere on the planet, so no surprises there. We even met the chef/owner, who checked on all the guests. This is not your traditional trattoria or osteria. It is not inexpensive, but if you appreciate great cuisine and service, it is worth every euro. read more
