I love the idea of this cafe helping cats find homes and I love the cats. The only issue I have is that the staff aren't exactly the nicest and easiest to talk to. I understand that they have the responsibility to look after the cats, but I personally don't own a cat myself so I'm not really sure of what a cats behaviour means. I was petting one of the cats and she started to swing her tail on my arm. (Reminder: I don't know anything about cat behaviour) I didn't realize that when a cat does this, it means that it doesn't want you to bother them anymore. One of the staff saw and like got pretty pissed and was like "Remember when she's swinging her tail that means she's annoyed of you". So I was just like ok and left to go see another cat. Then I guess it was time for the cats to eat, so I went to go sit down and go on my phone. I saw one of the really cute cats eating and thought it was cute, so I went to go take a video of the cat eating. And that same lady came up to me and said "don't touch the cats when they're eating". And it was in a pretty rude tone and she wasn't even looking at me when she said it. I was literally so far away from the cat like ??? I get the fact that you want to keep these cats safe and happy but like I'm literally doing everything that you told me to like not bothering the cats when they're eating. That lady was pretty nice to the other costumers but for some reason she had such a big issue with me and my friend. Like we literally didn't do anything that was rude or like unacceptable. Furthermore, they said that there were 12 cats in the cafe that day, but there definitely weren't 12. As others have already mentioned, $5 entry or $8 with a purchase. My mom and I got some subpar, overpriced macarons. They had a cat design on them so they were very cute. Also as others have mentioned, most cats were sleeping. I cannot believe people are taking stars off for this. THEY'RE CATS. What were you expecting? They sleep or they play. That's it. Cats get over stimulated really easily so after a day full of strangers (and their damn children) RUNNING after the cats with a stick, I'm not at all surprised they didn't want to cuddle. If I were a cat, I would have mauled everyone. But I'm not a cat and these kitties are nice. As some of my other reviews on yelp have shown, I consider service to be a primary factor in deciding how many stars a place gets. People could easily be replaced by machines and machines certainly wouldn't snap at me and tell me not to interrupt them because I giggled. Or at least I don't think they would. I haven't encountered anyone as rude as the front desk girl in a while. It may have been a long day...my mom and I got there at 7 and didn't have to wait/there was space available for us but who knows? Maybe front desk girl was going through some stuff...she was on the phone when we got there but paused when she realized we weren't going to just go away (since we figured we should check in before just going in), and squealed "Hi!" Like a 4 year old girl. It was pretty startling actually...not a calm "Hi there I'll be with you in a moment" or "Hello there welcome to catfe" My mom had been there twice before so she knew the rules. As for me, I read through the rules while front desk girl was on the phone for 1-2 minutes which gave me plenty of time to read them. Maybe I should mention that my mom has a cat who is pretty grumpy. I also have a cat but who is very energetic and is almost a dog. He used to be a stray before we got him from the SPCA. My boyfriend and I treat him well...in fact, I treat all cats well. ACTUALLY, I treat all PEOPLE well. Except when they treat me like a child or dirt or whatever it was this girl was treating me like. Front desk girl gave me a spiel about how she has to tell us the rules out loud becuase that's her job....fair enough. My mom and I listened intently. She was speeding through them without breathing and sounded extremely bored with her life but that's neither here nor there, right? My mom murmured "mm" because her macaron was tasty. The front desk girl turned to us and said something along the lines of "it's rude to interrupt another person while she's talking, so listen to me when I'm talking to you!" And glared at me. Not really sure what I did to piss her off so badly but I definitely didn't deserve to get yelled at. After her spiel, rude remarks, and several eyerolls, we went to go pet some cats. In the main room, a girl and a guy were playing with 3 cats using a Lazer. Lovely. A family with a small child were poking at a sleeping cat because apparently not everyone can read rules or listen to front desk girl which explains why she assumed we weren't listening either. Their child was running after one of the cats with a stick. I was gently petting the kitty's head and then the kid came over and poked the cat in the face so cat left. Such is the nature of kids, I get it............that's when they moved on to another cat. Poor cats. There's a sign on a door that says I should ask a worker if I can go in to pet 3 cats so I asked front desk lady. I got another spiel about how I should give the cats space because they're bonded and shy. This spiel turned into a bored rant about which cat is which and how to open a door and how to approach a cat that doesnt want to be approached (ie. DONT) as if I couldn't just figure that out when I got in there. Sorry, after that initial rude awakening, everything that came out of her mouth left a sour taste in mine. I pet and played with some kitties. The shy one even came out to play for a few seconds. My mom stayed out of the room since it was a small space and apparently front desk girl went up to her to thank us for being kind to the cats.....like this was a surprise to her. I didn't personally receive a thank you or an apology but I guess it's better than nothing. I hope these kitties get adopted and this place gets shut down. I feel bad for the cats and that women was a C U Next Tuesday. Ugh kids. Ugh their parents. Ugh people. Meow. read more

Visited the Catfe today, great concept but I think with 1hr visit restriction and also this many rule imposed to see the cats, it is literally better off that you go visit your friend's house who has cats. Today there were more cats to meet. A lot of my prior complaints were explained today. You need to be there ten minutes before your reservation because it does get crowded with people who want their drinks. The drinks are okay and they're priced quite high like Starbucks and Blenz. Trendy pricing. I would pass it. I tried their ganache Meowcaron this time and it was not only cute but it tasted delicious. I recommend that flavour. I'd eat it for aesthetic novelty but I can get macarons elsewhere. I really don't like visiting in the afternoons because the cats were either grumpy, depressed or shy and mostly wanted the employees' attention. They looked weary from the entire day and the café was overcrowded within half hour. Of course the cats wouldn't want to be there. There was one friendly Calico who befriended two girls and swished past me. Everything is topped up price-wise but I'm sure that people like myself will sometimes overlook it...I mean the merchandise is tempting... read more

If you keep finding bad reviews about this place, there's probably a good reason why. To begin with, we reached this place at about 2:30pm and were told by the staff that they can get us in at the 4:00pm slot. The person at the front desk didn't inform us that there are certain rules if you come in with a small child. We wasted one and a half hour, with our car parked under the mall (had to go back and pay for extended parking). We were pretty excited about visiting this place because our one and a half year old toddler absolutely loves cats. Anyway, we roam around in this crappy mall, which is Keefer place. There's basically NOTHING here you can do to spend your time. We came back at the said time and this other girl comes to us and lectures us about what we should and shouldn't do since we had a baby with us. She is this overly protective person who goes on and on about how our child shouldn't "squeal" around the cats and how he should be completely quiet. She also told us clearly that if our child makes any sound, we will be told to leave the premises. I mean seriously?! Extremely disappointed. Wasted our entire day. At the end when it was our turn to go in, my baby got excited looking at the cats and was naturally cooing at them. The uneasiness of the staff made us leave before the staff told us to. Utter waste of time. They should have an outright no child policy than to waste other people's time and energy like this. read more

Brought my friend here last week because she loooooves cats! and I like them a lot, too, although I'm more of a dog person. Anyway, we found the staff to be very friendly, at least the 2 that were working that day. The kitties seemed very comfortable, one on the top of one of their huge shelves, another nestled in the corner at the window where another customer was sitting, and a few roaming around. I was just going to let the cats wonder over to me instead of me approaching them. Well, that wasn't going to work. There were about 5 kids in there about 7-8 yrs old and they just kept following the cats around, never letting them be. Of course the cats always tried to get away. It was really annoying. When the customer in the corner got up, of course the kids went over to touch the cat and it got up to get away. I may come again but during a time when there's no kids. Otherwise, great place to interact with cats esp if you're hoping to adopt one PS: I don't hate kids, lol, just wish the parents would be sensitive to how they should interact w/ the cats read more

I came back to Vancutever for the long weekend when I realized I felt the sudden urge to be smothered in kitty goodness right meow. Lovely place. Went twice in the same week and the early morning session was definitely more fun. The cats seemed happy to see you and wanted to say hello and play. In the afternoon they were much more chilled and sleepy. The number of cats depend on how many they had adopted, we even saw an adoption whilst they were there. So for me I didn't really mind then having fewer cats as it meant some had gone to forever homes. Highly recommend as an experience and I thought the $5 admission with the $3ish drink price was very reasonable to help some lovely cats! read more

Alright, I've been to the Catfé a couple times and I was thinking of coming in today, however there was a little black cat playing with her paws under the door and a little old lady was playing with her under the door and someone inside SCREAMED at her and publicly shamed her for playing with the cat. Like seriously. Come out and just quietly say "Please don't play with the cats because..." rather than scream at someone. I was so put off and sad for this. You have the best job in the world, playing with cats all day. Be happier. Be appreciative for the customers that want to come in. read more

I have been here twice and the first time it took me forever to find the place. I really hate the location. When i have gone here they have had 7 cats and 3 of them had adoptions pending. That left only 4 cats to adopt. I also find they have a lot of rules. I honestly like the cat sanctuary in Richmond way better. read more

This is a place with a great premise. Spend time with a whole bunch of cats while drinking coffee or eating small sweets. The thing is, there aren't that many cats. When we went, I counted five or six cats. It was the middle of the day, so of course the cats were sleeping. This is really a place where you can relax while looking at cats. It's cool to say that you went here. If you're not a tourist, it's more useful, because they have adoption information for the cats. But if you're a tourist, it's just cool to say you came here. This place is awesome! I have to admit that, at first, I was the most SKEPTICAt of this sort of place. But, then, I was convinced. First, you have to realize you're in Chinatown. I've heard horror stories of what the locals eat/capture, and I'm half convinced by mere evidence of the "foul" play (ducks hung by their feet in the windows, cooked.... not looking very happy). So, needless say, I was VERY comforted by the fact that there were cats locked inside this little Commercial suite on the second floor of this Chinatown building, unable to escape (and be harmed!). I also thought the name "Catfe" was funny and cool, as well as hipster. I like that. Coffee is really cheap, much better than Starbucks, but then again, in Vancouver everything is expensive. So, $7 for my latte (maybe with an extra shot inside) wasn't a bad deal! The cats were cute. Two of them were sleeping. The rest of them were hiding. Also, this place is so professional. Before handling the cats, we had to go through an official training. Excellent! Hand washing, and hand sanitizing! NO germs to the kitties! Leaving, also, disinfect! Clean up before entering back into ChinaTown-dom. The other cats? So awesome... they were hiding somewhere. That's cool, and I like that, too. We all know that cats love to hide when they feel comfortable. Thus, these cats felt NO discomfort or stress at being pimped out, day after day, for people to use. They felt at peace enough to just hide away. That's cool. I'd say that afterwards, I felt so uplifted that I had the chance to hang out with the two cats. I really loved how we all shared the cats, all 12 of us in the room, and it was really cool how we all had appointments to see these cats, too. I like that -- appointments. I also felt pretty VIP because there were some people coming in the door, and they were turned away, because they didn't have appointments to this Catfe. That's cool -- I liked that! Also cool how they have signs on the outside mall window that say "don't tap on glass"! That's SOOOOO true. Because I hate when people tap on the window when I'm sucking down my latte. Would I go back? Probably! I don't see why I should go to a rescue shelter or play with my own cats at home, when I can go to the safe shelter of a mall in ChinaTown and pet these other cats, while spending time with other new people (aka strangers) to make friends, and when we are all VIP's, and while we can't be tapped at through the window, and while the latte is even better than Starbucks, and while these cats are just sooooooooo adorable and cute. I had high hopes for this location but was left disappointed. The admission was $5 with purchase or $8 without. I opted for the London Fog tea which turned out extremely bitter. There were around 9 cats when I went and was a pretty calm environment. They say it's $8 an hour but no one really checks up on you. I would give this three stars for the overall experience, the cats, the food, and the employees, with one exception. Where I would deduct two stars is with said one employee. This employee walked us through the rules as one would expect a kindergarten teacher to do. She came off as extremely rude and condescending. While people were walking around interacting with the cats, she seemed to go about telling people what they could and could not do. She lacked patience for the children there that were acting like, well, children. What really defined it for us was when we asked her about potentially adopting a cat. We were told we could leave our contact information. After talking to her some more, her mood suddenly changed. She started saying the cat we were interested in was a bully and we would not want her. When we asked about leaving our contact info, she ultimately told us not to bother. I am in disbelief someone who works at a place trying to adopt out cats would actively be this dissuasive. This was a super fun place to go with a group of friends. We made our reservation two months in advance. Before you enter the room with all the cats your can order coffee and sweets for yourself. The coffee was good and the Early Grey Hello Kitty shaped macaroon was delicious. Unfortunately there was only eight of cats when the maximum capacity is twelve. The cats seem to get more than enough love and they aren't really willing to play as much as you would expect. However, its a fun activity to do in Vancouver. I've read reviews about the expectations and they're right, don't think you'll be surrounded by very social cats that will climb up on you, rub their noses on your legs, etc. It's more a place if you want to just see a bunch of cats and take photos. read more

My cat passed away last month. After sometime to mourn him, I paid a visit here to interact with other cats and possibly find a new companion. By the end of the visit I had an adoption pending for a cat that I felt a connection with. The paperwork and first interview was completed and I was expecting a call this week for the second interview. They even had the Adoption Pending sticker placed on her profile when I dropped by to spontaneously visit her. I ended up not receiving the call, so I decided to contact them from my end to ask what's up. A receptionist picked up and she told me the owner had just left the store, so I was asked to wait 10 minutes for a call back from her. For whatever reason they called my home phone instead of the cell and left a voice mail saying that MY CAT WAS APPROVED TO ANOTHER HOUSEHOLD. This seriously upsets me as I was told she had no other submissions; other than two before me which were already declined. The reasoning I was given was that since she was doing "so well with other cats", they preferred to have her adopted in a household that already owned a cat. In that case, I should've received a call asap to be informed of the new requirement instead of quite literally giving away my cat to another person. Will definitely not be visiting in the future. I'm completely heartbroken by this disoriented mess. read more

I visited the Catfe a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Vancouver. This is the fourth cat cafe I've been to, and one of my favorites. I was initially a little skeptical as it is located in a shopping mall, and I have a strong dislike of malls. But, once you're inside, it's a beautiful space. The rules are explained to you prior to entering (and for people complaining about all of the rules: they are very clear about what to expect, and every cat cafe has these rules - for a reason!). You also place your order for food/drink before entering, and I like how they had a cheaper "admission" price if you get something to eat/drink. Once you're in the space, it's lovely. And there are lots of cats - some sleeping, some playing, but plenty to give pets and attention to. The windows are large and there's lots of light coming in, and great toys for the cats, as well as good hiding places for them if they want some space. Really, this is the best cat cafe I've been to. The catfe was an excellent idea when it comes to saving cats and giving them great homes. I love the idea, don't get me wrong, however the staff that work there are rude and arrogant. They did not seem interested in helping out the customers or telling them to stop petting the cats in a nice manner. I paid $8 for an entrance fee to play with the cats and spend a good time with them, but the staff were not happy about my friend and I "annoying them" as their tails wagged. I do not own a cat at home, so I do not know when a cat is pissed off, but that lady did not seem to understand where we were coming from, she just told us to scram. Also, the whole experience was quite boring, as the cats did not want to play or come out. Outside on their door, they specified they would have 12 cats that day, but when we went in there was only around 4, which was really devastating. Honestly, if you're not there to adopt a cat , you could go volunteer at the RAPS and hang out with cats there! read more

To my way of thinking the Catfe staff need to display exemplary behaviours in the Cat Lounge if they want visitors to follow the rules. The day a friend and visited, we noted visitors chasing after cats hovering over them while the cat(s) were trying to sleep. Nothing was said by the staff person. But then this staff would go around picking up cats while sleeping and petting them and/or moving them to other places. We thought this to be inappropriate considering the rules we were told. We were told they were 10 cats in but because it was the afternoon all but a few were hidden someplace enjoying naps. This you expect on a sunny afternoon. When it came time to leave, one of the sleeping cats, decided to wake up and sees us off. He/She was a talkative little things and was getting a little too close to one of the out doors to a middle room to the Catfe. To my astonishment, the staff came around started yelling at the cat to get back in the lounge by using her hands pointing in the direction of the lounge and finally used her feet by stomping. The cat hissed and started running. The staff started laughing My friend and I didn't see that there was anything to laugh at. Here's this poor little rescue cat being friendly then has someone standing above them yelling at them then stomping feet and scaring it and making it upset. To me this is no way to treat an animal. We left Catfe vowing never to return again. The next day, I went on the Provincial SPCA website to fill in one of the e-mail forms (June 21st) and sent them my concerns. The auto return email said I would get a reply within 72 hours. To date I have had no response. So if you are looking for a cat to adopt try else where. read more

The cashier/barista/greeter/hostess was too short of patience to welcome and explain how the cafe works to anyone who happen to walk-in without a reservation. She kept repeating "no reservation; no seats" several times without giving me any chance to ask any questions. I love cats, coffee, and tea. As a result, one would assume that I would be a big fan of Vancouver's first cat cafe. Unfortunately, my experience here was a huge letdown. My wife booked our reservation months in advance. The lady in charge of the room with the cats on the day which I attended was condescending, unfriendly, and rude. She also had an incredibly annoying nasally voice which significantly detracted from the atmosphere of the cafe. The food was tasteless and overpriced. The only positive thing about Catfe was the cats, which were mostly asleep (as cats tend to be), but were at least friendly and furry. Not a fan of the model and design of the cafe. I was also surprised by condescension of staff when arriving as a drop in, as I was unaware that drop in was not really an option. They shouldn't offer drop in when they can't guarantee it and when the roll their eyes at you for not making an reservation. Was misled about the price of entry being $8 if you buy a (also expensive) coffee drink or $10 without a drink, when I thought it was $5. An hour timeslot is too long and half an hour slots should also be available and then charge 5 to 6 dollars for those who find $10 prohibitive. Reservations months in advance are also crazy, especially for only an hour. Unless owner changes or store changes in some ways, won't be going back. Honestly, just volunteer at a shelter if you can't have a cat and want play with them. They need interaction with people and to be taken care of. Also it's free and you aren't getting ripped out by crazy cat people. In fact, you're actually help cats with real problems. Not the cherry picked friendly cats that are more easily adopted, as this cafe does. If they wanted to help, they would have cats that are never going to be adopted because of special needs like missing legs or simply being too old. I've volunteered in shelters and seen the adorable kittens never be adopted because they are too high maintenance. And even this charity cafe doesn't adopt them either. read more

This was a genuinely uncomfortable experience. My cat-loving boyfriend and I were so excited to come visit the Catfé, planned it out around his birthday and everything. When we arrived at the Catfé fifteen minutes before our reservation, as we had been told to do, we were pushed off, told that they were over capacity and would have to wait. When we finally did get into the cat room, it was completely depressing. While the place is beautiful, and objectively a great home for the kitties, these poor cats are clearly so miserable. They're overstimulated, want nothing to do with the patrons, and seem almost scared of people approaching them. We ended up leaving not even halfway through our allotted time because we were so uncomfortable with how depressed these cats seemed. Feeling really bad about supporting this: Adopt don't shop is absolutely a wonderful mantra, but try adopting from somewhere that doesn't drive the animals to the brink. read more

This place is absolutely amazing! My boyfriend and I were just scrolling through the internet for things to do in vancouver as we are spending 2 weeks here on holiday, when we found this little treasure. We were so excited about going to meet some really cute cats! We booked for the 5pm slot (which is pretty good, because I assumed they wouldn't be open that late) and found it pretty easily. As we walked in, there is a small shop with some really gorgeous cat related gifts/merch; obviously I bought a cat ring... They also had some really cute cat muffins and macaroons too which I couldn't stop 'awing' at. As we bought something in the shop/cafe, entrance was $5 which is wayy cheaper than I thought it would be, and the two ladies in the shop/cafe at the time were really helpful and lovely as we made our purchase. When 5pm came around, one of the ladies took us into the cat room and gave a brief intro on how to behave and interact with the cats (which is pretty handy if you've not handled cats before) She mentioned that one of the cats was in his own room because he wasn't very social with the other cats, so we went to visit him first. My boyfriend and I completely fell in love with him, and even came back in the room later on to play with him again because he was just adorable. The cat room itself is big, there are loads of toys and places for the cats to sit/sleep/play/eat etc. there are also the cats' profiles on the wall which was really nice because we could read about their backgrounds and personalities! We really enjoyed ourselves and the staff were super friendly, they answered any questions that we had and just seemed like they really enjoyed their jobs. You can tell that the cats are well looked after in the cafe, and that they really look for suitable people to adopt the cats (as one of the girls on the desk was chatting to someone on the phone about suitable candidates) Whilst we were there someone came to pick up one of the cats that they had decided to go, which was really sweet to watch as all of the staff came out to say goodbye to him (super emotional!) Anyway, this place is fab, it's a really good wholesome place for cats and if we lived in Vancouver we would have definitely adopted one of the cats. Super clean environment, designed to be enjoyable for the kitties as they wait for adoption. The cats seem very much at home, and there have been alot of adoptions. The folks who work there are all nice, they are clear about the rules without being over the top about it. They want you to enjoy your time with the cats while also looking out for the kitties so they are not stressed out by everyone swarming them! Didn't try anything from the cafe side as I was all about petting kitties and buying stuff--they have a small store but you will definitely find some good items here! Everyone who was there the day I went was respectful of the cats, who are hilarious. Nikita was having none of it---but there was a big kitty who was happy to take her share of the attention from all of us, and a little guy who seemed willing to chase the feather all day. Before actually going to the catfe, I wanted to look at the reviews to see if it was worth it. Lots of people just gave it 2, 3 or 4 stars, mainly because there was rude staff or too many people and less cats, but when we went, it was great. Friendly and knowledgable staff, and the cats were playful and energetic. We made an appointment for 11am, so not many other customers were there, as that's when it opens. I visited the Catfe with an interest in adopting a cat. My 1 star rating is based on my experience with the staff member who indicated she was the 'manager' YIKES!! Before writing this review, I read the others and there are many that indicate a similar bad experience with the staff . . . Rude and arrogant. When I walked in I was greeted by a staff member who made me feel extremely unwelcome and like my visit was a complete imposition on her. I was scolded for not calling ahead to see if the cats were still available. Every time I tried to talk I was rudely interrupted. And I was made to feel like my interest in cat adoption was a bother to her. This should be of concern to 1) the owner, in terms of customer satisfaction and repeat business; and 2) the BCSPCA who is their partner in placing the cats. After leaving the Catfe I went to BCSPCA and shared my experience. The next thing I did was complete an adoption application with VOKRA. Hopefully the owner has good business sense and will pay attention to the reviews and take action. read more
