My favorite place to go for desserts that impress my guests. To avoid becoming the size of a small house, I only allow myself to walk into the bakery when company is coming over. The bakers here offer a dozen or so breads, perhaps twenty or so cookies, cakes--including cheesecake that is (almost) as good as my own! Their best offering, in my opinion, is the mini-pastries. These include tiramisu, a variety of chocolate mousse creations, Neapolitans, and tarts, among others. Priced by the pound, these average about 1.50 each. I usually get a half dozen, slice them into bite-sized servings, and plate them up for the perfect end to a home-cooked meal for friends. Hit the ATM before you stop by. I'm waiting in line to get a croissant and the 10 ppl ahead of me are all ordering 3-5 croissants each. I'm thinking that they'll be out before I get to the counter! Nope, they bring out more. This is a good place to get your AM croissant. The brownie hits the spot if you want something chocolate and heavy. The carrot cake has their spin, not the typical flavor you expect from carrot cake. Omg!!! I haven't had a bad thing from here yet. Their prosciutto bread is outstanding! The cheese and olive breads are delicious too. I've had many of their pastries and they didn't disappoint. I'm not a fan of cannoli but my friend insisted I try it from here and I have to say that I'm glad I did. I ended up ordering the chocolate cannoli. Lol!!! I have lived in ridgewood for over 35 years. I love the neighborhood and I have been going to this establishment for many years. In the last couple of years they have renovated into a trendy bakery. However, the prices have inflated and the policy have changed to include additional fees for an already set price. I called Catania soeak to a what sounds like a young woman who listens to the discrepency then proceeds to put the phone down and then the call disconnects. I call back. Just go. Among the overwhelming selection look for the almond biscotti which has that mysterious quality of being dry but chewy at the same time. The nutty flavor and chewy texture made me ashamed to have ever liked any other biscotti. They also measure it by the pound, not the piece. That's how darn good it is! I'm seriously considering packing a suitcase with biscotti from Catania to bring home to friends and family in California. We have stayed a week in Bushwick and are eating our way through the menu at Catania. From chicken salads to subs, to cookies and biscotti this place is just amazing. I grew up in Ridgewood and have been buying Italian cookies at Catania since I was a child. There are no better cookies. I live in LI now and when I come down to visit my family, I have to make a stop at Catania and order a pound of Italian cookies to go. They are to die for and no ones cookies compare! My favorite Italian bakery besides Mikes Pastry in Boston. I grew up with Sicilian/Italian pastries and have lived, worked and gone to culinary school in Italy. I have loved everything I have bought there and the staff is very friendly. I can always depend on Catania Bakery to provide beautiful, richly flavored cakes whenever my family wants a special way to celebrate their birthday or a successful milestone in their life. I lived near this bakery for two years and I must say - it was the best bakery to have as a neighbor. At night you can smell in the streets the bakers working at night to make the fresh pastries for the following day. When I had a bad day - there was nothing the napoleon couldn't do to cheer me up. I sent my husband today and he just text me stating they are all outs.
